Chapter Thirty Nine - New Horizons
Jack had perched on the railing for a moment, time enough to find Bella through
the swirl of bodies. She was with Will fighting back to back, a smooth dance
each seeming to know where the other was. He frowned, that was something that
came with time, or intimacy, the frown deepened as he saw Will rest a hand in
the small of her back before they spun away to face the next challenger. The
simple gesture and the way that Bella smiled up at Will
before she raised her blade once again set the wheels in Jacks head spinning,
the actions of the compass suddenly falling into place with an almost audible
click. So this was how it was. He should be angry he supposed if he was any
sort of traditional brother, but Bella looked radiant, even though she was
filthy and covered in blood there was something in her face that had never been
there before, and that made him feel warm. Certainly he felt an odd sort of
feeling in the pit of his stomach, loss perhaps, that no longer would either of
them need him so much but he shook it off and snickered just a little to
himself that Will would fall in love with a pirate after all those protests
about piracy when they had first met. He grinned, stroking a hand over his
moustache before leaping off the rail. Bella was being hard pressed it was time
to rescue his sister.
*
“Jack” her shout rose above the battle clamour and
she flung herself at him, arms wrapped around his neck, even as one handed he
dispatched the man who had loomed over her. All around them the crew of the Pearl were taking
control, forcing the pirates back to throw down their weapons, bunching in
sullen groups, dismayed at how the tide had turned.
“It’s alright luv.” He had tears in his eyes as he
pulled her close, uncaring of who might be watching, bending his head to kiss
her hair, they clung for a long moment, Bella’s body shaking in the circle of
his arms and he could feel damp tears on his neck. He closed his eyes for a
moment, allowing the fear that had sat on his shoulder for the past few months
to slip away.
When he opened them he met Will’s gaze, there was a question in the lad’s eyes
and Jack nodded at him. Gently he disentangled Bella’s arms. She stepped back,
her eyes suddenly wary as she watched him step towards Will. They looked at
each other for a long moment then with a move so sudden that Bella flinched Jack enveloped Will in a bone crushing hug.
“You look after her mate or I will have to take steps” the words were low
audible only to Will who tensed until Jack pounded him on his back, grinning
when he pulled away.
Will nodded his face grave as the men shook hands.
“Thank you” Jack was definitely smirking now “for taking care of Bella and
taking her off my hands.”
“Jack” Bella’s fist caught him under the ribs “I am not a side of beef.”
“That you are not luv, a side of beef would have been
much less trouble.”
He caught her in his arms again, kissing her nosily whispering in her ear “does
he make you happy?”
She sighed softly “he does Jack.”
“Well that is good with me then.” He kissed her again and she wrinkled her
nose.
“Have you been eating garlic Jack? You stink.”

Martinez watched the reunion from his place
at the wheel, his men, those that still stood joining their rescuers in detaining
the pirates that had attacked them. He hesitated, reluctant to step forward
until he saw the man that stood with Isabella looking towards him. He sheathed
his blade in the scabbard and began to walk down the stairs.
Bella was whispering urgently to Jack as Martinez made his way across
the filthy deck. Giving him what she considered to be the important details.
Jack was nodding as he watched the man who approached them, placing one hand on
Bella’s arm to halt her as the other man stopped, holding out a hand.
“I owe you thanks” Martinez ducked his head in
a bow, “for rescuing us. I take it you are Captain Jack Sparrow.”
“Aye mate and no thanks needed, I came for Bella and William.”
“Understood” Martinez
nodded “you are aware that Bella has family in Spain,
family of some importance?”
“I
am now” Jack glanced at Bella “though I would not call them family, not in the
sense that I think of family.”
“You have a point Captain Sparrow” Martinez hesitated “But her
grandfather wishes to see her to explain, to give her a future.”
“I have a future” Bella interrupted indignation in her voice “I don’t want to
be trapped in some fancy house, wearing dresses in which I cannot breathe,
married to a man who I do not love and who does not love me.”
“But surely you want to meet you grandfather? He has much to tell you.” Martinez voice held a note
of disbelief.
Will was looking at her now, acutely aware of how she had always desired to
know where she had come from, to know of her parents, of how she had come to be
in that small boat in the middle of a lonely ocean. He could see Jack out of
the corner of his eye; he too had his eyes fixed on Bella’s face, worry
flickering in his eyes as he glanced up at Will.
Bella was silent for a long moment “I want to go home.” She looked at Will then
at Jack “to Tortuga, if my grandfather
wishes to meet me, he will find me there.”
*
Jack lifted his fingers from the map watching it roll into a loose coil; he
nudged it sideways with his glass, absently adding it to the other rolled maps
that rested beside his elbow. Will and Bella had not long left his cabin, they
had sat around this same table talking for hours, filling in the missing days
and hours had slipped by unnoticed. After one last toast they had wished him
goodnight, they had gone to sit in the bow, he had seen them there as he had
taken one final turn around the deck. They had been talking quietly and
unnoticed he had stood and watched them, his Mother would have approved he was
certain of that. William Turner was a good man and he would take care of Bella,
perhaps not the life that their Mother would have expected for her but she was
happy and that was what counted.
Now he sat at his table amongst his charts thinking. They probably should go
back to Tortuga, they had been away
for a while, but there was nothing really there that he needed to go back to.
Everything that had drawn him back was here. He poured himself another dash of
rum and leaned back in his chair. It had been a while since the Pearl had last docked in Singapore….
The End....for now...
