Chapter Thirty – Time and Place
“Tonight” Martinez looked at the five men who had joined him, they were all men
that he trusted, men that he had sailed with when they had all served the same
master “my spies say that he has arrived in the city.”
“We are ready” One of them spoke up, Roberto strong honest Roberto who had
grieved for his best friend, always remembering, an often visitor at the big
house in Spain. He looked to the
others who nodded in agreement.
“There are two, the woman and an Englishman; we will need to get the both. We
can make no mistakes.”
“Aye”
“We will meet at the appointed place, in two weeks. Remember to scatter to the
four winds when you sail from this place.”
“Si we will lead them a merry dance.” Roberto smiled but the smile did not
reach his eyes and his fingers touched his sword.

“What did he say to you?”
They were back in their room. Jones had been summoned to escort them not long
after Carlos had demanded the locket from Bella’s neck, something to send to
her Grandfather, something to prove that he did indeed hold her captive. The
locket had been given to Therese, by Raoul the day that Bella had been born and
Carlos had smirked when he had said that her grandfather would recognise it,
after all it had once belonged to his wife, Bella’s grandmother. She had handed
it over without hesitation, it was only a locket she had the things that she
had been searching for, the knowledge, and if they survived then she would one
day find her grandfather.
She looked at Will, noticing how tired he looked, and how his eyes were
shadowed.
“Nothing Will, nothing important, just some things about my mother.”
“Did he threaten you?”
There was no point in telling him, what would it gain “No not really, but we
have to escape Will he is not going to let us go no matter what my grandfather
does. He told us too much, and he is seeking some sort of revenge.”
“Aye” Will nodded “he would not have said what he did if he intended to free
you, or I. We need to get out of this house and find somewhere to hide, until
Jack gets here.”
Bella nodded “do you have any ideas?”
Will was studying the room, there were no windows and the ceiling was too far
above them to reach no matter if he stood on the wardrobe he would be unable to
boost Bella high enough to push one of the panels aside.
“We need a distraction, something to get the guards inside…”
“A fire….” Bella shuddered at the thought; any sailor hated the idea of fire in
a confined space.
“In the middle of the night….”
She nodded and they formulated a plan, hoping that it succeed, they only needed
to get out of the house and into a place of hiding, then they could trust that
Jack would find them.
Jones’ face was worried when he bought them dinner; he kept glancing at the
door as if afraid. Several times he looked as though he was going to say
something, but he never spoke other than to ask them if there was anything that
they needed further that evening. There was not and they thanked him before he
wished them goodnight. Will waited until he heard him wish the guards a good
evening then stood, picking up a chair and wedging it against the door.
“He is worried about something; at least if someone tries to get in we will
have some warning.”
Bella nodded picking at the food on the plate in front of her.
“Eat Bella; this could be our last meal until Jack finds us…”
“Will…”
He glanced up from the book he had been studying, a the history of Cuba, an
ancient street map of Havana on one of the pages, a map that they were trying
to memorise, so that if they found a landmark they would be able to get to some
place of safety.
“I am sorry, for what I said last night. It was awful…I just…I..” to her horror
she could feel tears welling and she looked away, down at her feet.
“Forget about it Bella” he did not look at her and something in her chest
clenched. She had been childish, stupid and as Maggie would have said, now her
chickens had come home to roost.
Will tightened his hands on the book, soon they would be on the Pearl, she would go back
to Tortuga and he would go back to Selena’s bed and
neither of them would speak of this again, if they ever saw each other. He
looked up from his book, his eyes unconsciously going to her, before he
realised what he was doing and dropped his head to stare at the pages again.

“Raise the sail; keep lights out, move, move. Hurry!!” Jack was rousing the
crew, it was just after midnight and they were about
to sail on Havana, he could see the
lights of the English Fleet they would be lifting anchor, raising sail, it was
time. He ran up the stairs to the wheel, his hands were damp as he grasped the
smooth wood, swinging the Pearl around. The anchor
thudded on to the deck, dripping, seaweed tangled around the chain and they
started to move, The Black Pearl surging forwards, Jack leaned back, one hand
dipping into his coat, finding the compass, flipping the lid open to study the
arrow, it swung once twice, then settled, pointing dead ahead. They were still
in the same place of that he was sure.
“I am coming” he whispered under his breath.
“Ready the canon” Gibbs was shouting at the crew as they pulled the heavy guns
into place, barrels of powder were being rolled up the stairs, tinder boxes
ready beside each heavy gun. The Pearl was flying over the waves, it seemed
that she barely touched each crest and the troughs were scarcely felt, behind
them the lights of the English had spread out, gleaming right across the
horizon, it would have been a sight to send fear into the belly of any honest
pirate, but the thought that the Pearl was leading them was exhilarating and
Gibbs found himself cackling as he yelled for more sail.
They were at the mouth of the Harbour, the great forts that were Castillo del
Morro and San Carlos De La Cabana soon left behind them, but they could hear
the shouts of alarm from the men on watch.
Into the depths of the bay of Havana, the ineffective Castillo de la Real
Fuerza now in front of them, an impressive stone structure, complete with moat
but too far inside the harbour to be of any adequate defence, it had been
sacked by pirates many times before and the walls bore the scars of heavy
canon.
“Fire” Jack roared the command, which was taken up by Gibbs, then Anna Maria.
The Pearl shuddered, jolting as the first of
the guns roared out, fire lighting the sky.
*
Bella woke with a start, there had been a deafening boom, and now there was
another, she could hear Will sitting up, even as she threw the bedclothes onto
the floor. She knew those canons.
“The Pearl, Jack is here…”
Will was stumbling across the room, fumbling with the lantern, light bloomed.
Bella was already out of bed, scrambling for her clothes even as they heard
shouts and the sound of running feet from the street.
“Hurry we have to get out of here, before Carlos comes for us..” Will was
pulling on a shirt even as Bella dressed hurriedly, trousers drawn up under her
nightgown, before she pulled it off over her head, uncaring of her nakedness;
there was no time for modesty. Will ready, turned to see her bare from the
waist up for just a second before she snugged a shirt over her shoulders,
buttoning it quickly. He swallowed, knowing that if they lived through this
that the next time he closed his eyes that image would be the first thing that
he saw. He pushed the thought away…not now…later. Coats were on, hats squashed
on to heads and they instinctively looked for the weapons that they did not
have.
“The lamp…smash it” Will was taking the chair from under the door handle as
Bella ran for the lamp. They both froze as voices rang out from the other side
of the door.
“To the Harbour that is Lord Carlos’ orders…we are under attack.” It was Jones,
giving the guards instructions and they remained motionless listening to the
two men clattering down the stairs until there was silence, then Jones voice
spoke very softly as the door creaked open just an inch.
“William, it seems that our mutual friend Captain Jack Sparrow has arrived. My
master has sent me to take you to another place, a place where you shall never
be found…” there was a long silence then Jones continued “I am going to step
inside the door now; I do hope that you are ready.”
The door opened and Will grabbed the older man.
“Good lad…now you must both flee, he will kill you if he finds you…”
“Aye and what of you Jones?”
“I will find my way, as I always do…”
“I think we need to make it clear that you had no part of this…Bella, we need
something to tie him with.”
Jones was tied and gagged, they slipped down the stairs, hugging the wall,
staying in the shadows, all was quiet, almost too quiet. The big door was open
to the street and the cobbled road was crowded, men rushing to the harbour,
women tugging children in the other direction, heading inland away from the
danger. Will grabbed Bella’s hand.
“Come on, we must keep together”
They plunged into the street just as a voice shouted “The girl…there she is..”
“Run Bella to the church of Saint Francis, ask for protection
from the monks, I will find you there.” Will pushed Bella, a hard shove that
propelled her into the masses before he swung to face the men that pursued
them.
She went to run, but before she could move she was caught around the waist,
strong arms that picked her up.
“Will….” Her scream carried across the urgent Spanish and he turned anguish on
his face as he watched her struggle, even as he tried to get to her, before he
was hit from behind…falling.
“Will….Will!”
