Rocky and Tum Tum are in their bedroom watching television, well, - - animatedly - - watching television. When the female gameshow host asked the six paired up contestants: Name something can clean, to vanish the dirt out of this world; Rocky shouted his answer.
"Comet!"
Then came the contestant with the same answer. It was correct. The Douglas brothers were hooked on Supermarket Sweep, thanks to Tum Tum, and his love of all things food related. They'd choose teams to root for, as well as compete with each other answering the questions. It was such a nice, peaceful activity. No one expected the disaster that was about to explode in the solitude.
First came the slamming of the front door. Their mother was heard saying "Jeffrey?", before feet pounded up the stairs.
Rocky looked at Tum Tum with a concerned expression. "Guess she turned him down."
Had the alarm not gone off, the door bursting open would have made Rocky and Tum Tum jump out of their wits. Rocky was about to kindly, sympathetically, ask for details; however, he was surprised to have his shirt grabbed roughly, which aided Colt in yanking him from the bean bag chair to a slanted position on his feet.
"Wednesday... I showed you a picture of Geri, to brag about how good-looking she is..." Colt snarled. He was not playing around. This tone was reserved for those he loathed or wished harm upon. "You said "she looks familiar"... Familiar from when?"
"Colt, I..."
He shook his brother. "Did. You. Know?"
"I remembered her because her family came to Ethan Allen, back when I'd worked there... I helped them pick out bedroom furniture."
Colt nodded, but his grip did not loosen. "Did. You. Know?"
Tum Tum blinked, watching this bizarre scene playing out. Did Rocky used to date Geri? Was she really worth all this fuss? He has to get a look at this girl. Because he's still at the intersection of She's Cute but Who Cares in life. So to have someone so pretty she'd cause a rift in their 'Brothership', as brothers are closer than friends, she must be something.
Rocky sighed, he couldn't lie. He gave a single nod. "There was something in the eyes.."
"Colt?! What's the matter with you?!" Tum shouted as he hurried over to help Rocky up from getting decked on the jaw hard enough to send him to the floor.
"Did I make you laugh, huh, Rock'?" Colt spat. "Was it funny seeing me act that way about someone I'd known for a while then decided I liked? Of course it was, you've been laughing at me this whole time."
"I was not! Not because I knew, I didn't even know what she looked like until you showed me." Though he had no real harmful intention, the slight tension in his tone told Colt, he'd better not do that again; he could have it that once.
"That's a lie!" He pointed an accusing finger. "God... You knew I was making an ass of myself, but you let me do it anyway!"
That to Rocky made sense, as he could have told Colt what he discerned when his brother showed him her photo from the yearbook. "It wasn't up to me to tell you."
"Tch. I love this guy;" Colt fumed. "He has an obligation to protect everyone's feelings but mine!"
"Boys, Jeffrey?" Because she had to address the main culprit of the shouting. "What is going on?"
"Mom, not now." Colt asked calmly as he could that their mother just butt-out of this one. It would be over soon anyway. "Rocky, until I say otherwise, don't talk to me. Don't even be in the same room as me." And with that stated, he swiped his blanket and pillow then stormed off to the guest bedroom.
Jessica looked after his departure, then she addressed the remaining two. "Rocky, what's going on?"
Rocky, downtrodden, shrugged. "Geri and I met before... Colt likes to blow things out of context."
Jessica felt sadness for Colt, and also exasperation. It's hard to know what to say when your sons fight over girls. Thank goodness Tum Tum is still at the age of rejecting all people in pink, and cute. She'd likely deal with him more easily, he'd only be fighting for female affection with his friends. In which case, he dear son would always be in the right.
"See that it gets resolved peacefully. I don't like it when you boys fight."
"Ok, mom. I'll try."
"Thank you." She knew she was gonna have to speak to Colt, but she would save it for the morning.
Tum Tum crossed his arms, and looked at his brother with a concern. "Mom's gone... What was the fight really about?"
Rocky sat on his bed, an agitated sigh expelled from his mouth. "It's about Geri. Like I told Colt; her family came to the furniture store that year I worked there; except, at the time, Geri didn't look like she does now."
"I don't get it. Was she ugly?" He took a seat beside his brother, invested in whatever this tale was about to blossom into. Because right now, he is lost. So what if she was ugly before? Was Colt that shallow?
"Tum.. Geri used to be a boy."
The younger Douglas blinked. "Come again?"
"Geri is transgender."
Eyes wide, jaw dropped, he barely got the words out as a whisper. "No way. And you knew?"
"Only since Wednesday, mostly because I never saw Geri as a she, just briefly before and a little back in the day before then." He crossed the room to get the old yearbook. "See," he said once flipping around. "Geri and Colt were in the same third grade class. He may have even known her as a boy."
"And you put it together when seeing her photo, remembering the first time you saw her, then this?" He pointed to a smiling boy on the page amongst other grinning, grimacing, and bored kids. "No wonder he's pissed. I'd be pissed." He shook his head. "I'll try to play mediator, but good luck. Not even a friendly handshake and apology could settle this easily." He got up from the bed and walked to the vacated area before the television. He could at least salvage some of his sanity by watching the rest of the game show.
Rocky felt that he should feel guilty, but he doesn't. It really wasn't his business to tell. If Geri liked Colt, she would tell him when ready. If not, why mention something that is likely a sore spot, because that sort of thing never goes over well with the entire crowd. Yes. Vindicated that he did the right thing, despite his angered sibling, Rocky readied himself for bed.
In the guest room. It's dark and quiet. The lights are off and will remain off. Colt's whole system has shut off, so why invite the unwanted glow. It certainly won't reach the dark pit in his stomach. The breeding hurt from betrayal. How could Rocky not tell him. How could Geri not tell him? They've been hanging out for a year and a handful, and still nothing. I just moved here. My name. I like. Oh, and I used to be just like you. No. Never crossed her mind.
Last week was so beautiful, too. Geri felt better to come to school on Tuesday. She sat with him in the cafeteria. He was so slick too, telling her she had to taste something from his lunch, which he got to feed to her, and she did the same to him. A chocolate covered blueberry. He hates blueberries, but he loved it coming from her. It was sweet and delicious. Unique with the chocolate coating. Just like her.
And on Wednesday, that damming Wednesday, he'd been bursting with emotions that he had to show her off to Rocky. He and Geri walked home together. They said screw the bus and a ride with Rocky, and headed off into the lovely weather. He treated Geri to a donut and coffee, getting one of each for himself as well. They talked and laughed. It was like a true date. They were a functioning couple.
Thursday they went to the park and watched a bunch of guys b-boy. It was cool. He laughed with her when she asked to try it, and the dancers allowed her, showed her some steps. She had to feel that he liked her. Because by Friday, he was ready. He was going to do it. Things were going so well! And on Friday, today, just an hour ago, the other shoe fell.
At the theater he was in total boyfriend-mode. He paid, he brushed off the seat for her - - even went and washed his hands to prevent germs! He kept his conversations strictly for her, by whispering in her ear. He could tell Geri liked it, because she smiled in that pretty way she does with everything that she likes. She even laughed at his lame movie quips!
Now he know what all that evasion was about. Geri knew. Rocky knew. Hector knew. Fucking Hector. So angry, so sure he had to protect Geri from another jeering asshole...
Colt sighed. 'Why is it that I'm always treated like a bad guy?'
He closed his anger-heavy eyelids, then fell fast asleep.
The next morning. Colt breezed into their bedroom, grabbed a change of clothes, showered, dressed, took a packet of blueberry toaster pastries, then left the house. Why stick around for the murmurs and wonder. Rocky probably filled their mother in. And if not, he would. He doesn't need a lecture from anyone right now on his behavior.
He rolled his bike out of the garage, then travelled along in cruise control to anywhere L.A. He'll likely end up at the park, or some dark hole to exist in. Anywhere is acceptable when you're riding on emotions as fuel. He's got a hybrid. Anger. Sadness. Confusion. Guilt. All hooked up to one place. His heart. His stomped on, pitiful heart.
'Maybe I should just stop trying to be what I'm not? Maybe boyfriend isn't for everyone. I'm just a date. Nothing more. Kisses in corners, hands no longer visible. But, as a guy you can brag about.. Take home to parents... See a future with... Rely on. Everyone has to be somewhere I'm not.'
Colt set his bike down beside the bench before he took a seat on the wooden furniture. He ripped open the quick-fix breakfast then chomped out a hunk. It was completely different from the chocolate Geri gave him. It was vile. The blueberry substance was overbearing, the crust too doughy... More lies being fed to him. The fruit is not good. The disgruntled teen heaved a sigh. Honestly, he wanted to scream. But the burst concealed itself in his sigh.
He leaned back on the bench, legs extended out, and he looked at the sky. 'Am I a horrible person?' He doesn't think so. He was a little creeped-out by Rocky having a gay-side. True. But, he quickly got over that. More girls for himself. But, that wasn't the only reason why.
He's not gay. He doesn't even get it. But those who are, do, and he's fine with that. But Geri... He's never known any transgender person beyond the tv screen. He doesn't know what to say or how to act.
'Maybe that's why Geri didn't say anything. I'm a wild card.' He frowned with remorse. 'Geri was picked on a lot when she first moved out here... Maybe she thought a guy like me would be like everyone else then the crap would start all over again. Fuck! Even the other kids at school knew! I am such an idiot!'
A car horn honked jarring him from his self-inspection. He heard obscenities exchanged from drivers passing each other's vehicle. Morons. Yeah, he's really psyched to get out on the roads. He got up from the bench, and tossed the disappointing breakfast into the nearest trash bin. He climbed onto his bike then went home. No sense in spending the day in the neighborhood or park, he might bump into someone he knows or he thought he knew.

Colt decided he was going to take a 'Personal Day' on Monday. He didn't want to be at school, around all those knowing gazes, laughing at him inwardly or outwardly. Amy would have heard about the date. Amy would tell others about the bombed date. About how Colt struck out. Then the kids would whisper, because of his popularity. For Geri to reject him he must be a loser in comparison. But, those who know, who aren't fooled but aware would say something smart-assed. Something to hurt Geri and rip on him. Then everyone would be in a free-for-all with insults and injuries. He'd like to spare himself of it at least one day.
Colt spent the day helping his mother with cleaning, he watched some of the shows saved in the DVR. He stretched and ran through some Katas. Then he took a nap.
Tuesday he come to a decision. No avoiding Geri. Things were awkward enough. Why make it worse? However, Geri wasn't at school. It would seem she knew when he was going to skip then chose the next day to do so. But, when he asked Amy, she flipped him off and walked away from him like he was a piece of litter.
Troy asked how his date went, as if nothing happened. That was good! It meant word hadn't spread. He stayed home for nothing.
"Did Geri come to school yesterday?" He asked his friend.
"No. Since you didn't I thought you two were playing Hooky-Show-n-Tell." He wriggled his eyebrows suggetively. "Ow!" He voiced when receiving a swat upside the back of his head.
"Do you know why?"
Troy shrugged his hand. "Guess she wasn't feeling good, I don't know. Ask Amy, or gee - - call her. You do have her number."
Duh. How could he forget. Good. He'll call after school. They need to get some things straightened out. Then they can proceed from there.
Waiting for the final bell was hell. All through class he kept wondering what to say. Nothing sounded good. He either came off like a jerk or he'd embarrass himself being ignorant.
'I know I'm not really one to do too much of this, but... if I'm doing the right thing... send me a sign.' He pressed the speed dial after hearing a loud cheer come from behind the school. The football team are having practice. Not the most original sign, but, hey, it's better than having Freddie Kreuger jump up and startle him.
He almost was bumped into when he stopped walking, but the continuing foot traffic of exiting students pressed on. It's after school, and they'd like to see the place a gaining distance from them.
The phone rang. And it rang. Then abruptly stopped. He's been blocked.
He was at wit's end on Wednesday. And so was his mother, who informed him that it was his last "personal day" at home, and that he needed to find a way to forgive Rocky; still, as far as she knows has done nothing. Then she said that if he needed more time to pester himself with worry, he could do it in the school cafeteria.
Colt thanked his mother for her support - - however deminishing.
'Maybe grandpa can give me some advice?' He biked slowly around the area. He figured he could get away with saying he's homeschooled, and taking a free period, should anyone ask why a guy his age wasn't in school.
Colt's gaze glanced left by chance, and spotted a moving head of auburn hair. It couldn't be? He craned his neck to try seeing the person again. No. No. Wait... Yeah! He pumped his legs to speed up his pace. It was Geri! She was headed for the woods behind the park.
Douglas followed her straight in, weaving around the spacious wooded area. Not many places to hide in L.A.'s tree heavy areas. They are sparse, but they do exist. When Geri finally stopped, her bike was sat against a tree, she dropped to the grass and had a private moment of depressed laughter. At least, that's what it sounded like to Colt.
He's laughed like that before; the first time their dad insisted that he and Rocky, as Tum Tum wasn't yet born, spend less time with their grandfather. It lasted far too long for Colt's liking. He finally broke and just laughed. It was then that he'd first hurt his dad's feelings by saying "It's you or no one, huh, dad?" Then he added "If we can't see grampa, then how 'bout you stop hiding behind work and spend time with us.".
He tends to hurt people, unintentionally, when he is hurting. So, he has to play this carefully.
Colt set his bike to rest against a tree a little ways back, then he stealthily crept up towards her, and took a seat behind the tree she's resting her back on. He waited for her to start speaking to herself, so he could know where her head is at. Then he could go from there. But, she didn't. Geri continued to break the norm, because she just cried. Lowly, privately, cried.
Colt scooted himself over, then slowly he reached out and scooped up her hand. He expected her to squeeze his in return; however, he was surprised by his hand suddenly being twisted, right before he was just about pulled into to meet with a flying fist. Had he not been a ninja she would have slugged him good. But, he thankfully blocked the attack with his free arm.
"Geri, it's me!" He said further revealing himself from around the girthey tree.
"Get lost." She tossed his hand away as if it was a moldy sandwich. "Whatever insults you have lined up, I've heard them all before. Every vomit sound, nausea rendition, and poorly acted "what's that smell" routine. So spare me." She sighed. "And I take self-defense classes, too. So if you wanna beat me up, Mr. Ninja, I'll at least give you a good struggle."
Colt waited until Geri was finished before he spoke. He repositioned himself so he's now seated cross-legged in front of her. "I wasn't planning on doing any of that, so you "spare me" too."
Geri grumped. "Then why'd you follow me? To get-off on how miserable I am?"
Colt shook his head. "I came to get an apology from you."
"Excuse me?"
"Yeah... You knew I liked you, but if you were gonna use your situation as an excuse then you should have said something from the beginning." He felt another attack looming near. "But instead of being upfront about it, you let me believe you were available. ...Geri, were you laughing at me because of my feelings for you? And don't act like you didn't notice."
"Why would I laugh?"
"Then you pitied me? Is that why you kept quiet?" He glared. He wasn't sure which was worse. Being made fun of or pitied.
"I kept quiet because I know your reputation; I thought I wouldn't have to reveal myself to you, then go through the ridicule again, after things have finally cooled down for me from when I'd first came back to school as Geri." She crossed her arms, resting her back against the tree again. "And I'm almost accepted like anyone else. So, I thought you'd just forget about your feelings for me once some other cute girl came along. But, then you asked me out on Friday..."
Colt pointed repeatedly. "That's why I want the apology. You, and Hector, even my own brother... you all assumed my reaction." He glared, though not from anger but accusation. "You all decided I'm some asshole, who can't be trusted, or I'm not decent enough to at least have something explained to me, even if I'd find it unpleasant."
Geri looked confused, then bitter, then confused again.
Colt watched the emotions playing out, then continued speaking. "I admit it... I have never come across someone with your background before in person. But, after some self-exploring - - not that kind," he joked. "I realize that.. I don't care."
Geri looked snowballed. "What?" Her arms seemed to break shield as they dropped down from their protective fold to rest at her sides.
"I don't care." Colt repeated.
Defenses back, though all in embittered facial expressions and tone, she spat. "Bull... How could you not care?"
"How long have you been a girl?"
Geri furrowed her brow, thinking about that. "Umm, I think I started five or so years.." her words tapered off seeing Colt shake his head.
"No. I meant, how long have you been a girl not appear as one?" He corrected his words with further meaning.
Geri whispered. "All my life."
Hand cupped at his ear. "I'm sorry?"
"All my life!" She shouted to the sky.
Colt smiled and nodded. "I've known you for somewhere close to two years now. I put the work in of being friends, missy, but I wanted more. I still want more." He let that sink in. "Geri... I agree, that.. that changes things, but, only a little. You've never shown any side of yourself that that part of you matters, not to me nor anyone else, I assume." Douglas then asked. "Geri... Can you and everyone else please stop making assumptions of me, and just let me be myself?"
Geri nodded. "I'm sorry, Colt. You're right, I did jump to conclusions."
Colt sighed. "And, I'm sorry too. I know why you do. Everyone can't handle uniqueness, for whatever reason they choose, but you can't lump us all in as the same. Just because I don't understand you, doesn't mean I hate you. I like you... I actually more than like you."
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying let's start over." He stood, then reached to help her up. "Geri Simmons.. I'm Jeffrey Douglas; I think you're hot.. Will you go out with me?"
"Umm.. I.. I'd like to."
With a handsome grin, Colt asked. "Really?"
"Really. But, to be clear.. I have a guy's body... down there."
"What a coincidence, me too. And, so we're clear, it's not Jeffrey, it's Colt."
And there it was.. that beautiful, pure laugh that just choked Colt's heart like collar on a dog. Tugging him along after this beautiful leader.
"Now that that's cleared up, let's get out of here and get something to eat." Colt brushed his hand down his bare legs. "I think I sat in an ant hill, and the little bites made me realize it's lunchtime."
"Okay. But, uh, is this a date?" Geri asked. "Officially?"
"It better be, or you owe me money by Friday." He popped his fist into his palm.
The two joked and kidded as they exited the woods on their bike. Colt was happy with how things went. Maybe Colting-it-up will become a good thing from now on.
