Riddick dropped his goggles at the entrance allowing his eyes to soak up the darkness. “Beautiful.” He breathed as he carefully crept into the darkness, allowing his senses to expand around him. The hounds realizing the hunt was on lowered slightly and stepped softly into the darkness. A low growl echoed into the darkness Riddick looked sharply at the smaller female and the second growl died on her lips. As they rounded a corner the night horrors were all over the wall and some were even feasting on a dead one. This was a small cavern compared to the others. This one would do for the beasts only thirty or so beasts seemed to inhabit this place. Riddick took his dagger out and quietly stepped forward. Finding the blind spot he stood in it as the creature turned toward him. The beast screeched seeing the hounds but Riddick buried the blade deep in the beasts stomach and pulled to the right. As the guts spilled out the hounds as a group jumped and ran. The night horrors had been alerted and all hell broke out. Riddick received a deep slash on his arm and fell backward the alpha male had followed and choose that moment to intervene. Large teeth taring at the massive horror. Riddick sat back watching as the hounds made short work of the whole colony.
Pride slipped over Riddick as the alpha male turned and pounced on another one taking a large chunk out of the beast. Within moments all of the night horrors were dead and the hounds were all alive one female limping with a deep flesh wound on her leg. Riddick continued to watch as each hound began to drag the horrors into a pile in front of him.
“Eat.” Riddick motioned to the beasts and they began taring into the creatures. Blood dripping from their muzzles. Riddick was amazed how quickly these creatures had made short work of these stupid beasts. The alpha male leaned against him almost pushing him over. “Time to go my friend.”
The giant hound followed him out of the cave and as they crossed the desert his mind wondered. This woman, why did the hounds protect her so? Did they feel that she was a member of the pack? Or was there something about her that they could sense that he could not? Riddick glanced at the alpha male that walked with him if only they could communicate more than maybe he could know what these creatures knew. As he watched the hound the ear twitched once then twice and he came to a full stop. Slowly the corner of the lip lifted up and a soft growl flowed forth. A moment later the hound was running back to the ship its legs fully extended. Riddick pushed the thoughts away and pursued the beast knowing that something was wrong. Once they were closer to the ship the beast stopped slowly circling to the back.
An interesting scene was about to play out before him. Shirah was now awake and held the pup in her arms who was still asleep. In front of her was the small female her lips pulled back in a full growl and an aggressive stance. To the one side was James holding his hands up and speaking softly but urgently to the captain. The captain had a red welt on his cheek and was holding a blaster at Shirah. None of Riddick’s guards were in sight but there were two hounds that circled around the ship.
“Captain!” Riddick yelled making the man jump but Riddick wasn’t worried the man had yet to put his finger on the trigger. “What do you think you are doing!” The closer that he came the clearer it became the captain was shaking in either fear or anger, more than likely it was both. Although he could tell even from this distance that Shirah was shaking with fury, her anger as palpable as the ground beneath his feet.
“She slapped me!” There was a tremble to his voice as he shifted the gun slightly and the female hound’s growl got louder. A growl rippled from the alpha male and the captain shifted his eyes from the male to the female.
“Well,” Riddick folded his arms across his chest with a flicker of pride in his eyes that no one could see. “I am sure she had a good reason.” Riddick held out his hand to the captain. “Now hand me the gun, before the pack decided that killing you is worth losing one or two lives.” The captain looked at the four hounds that surrounded him and nodded slowly handing the gun over to Riddick. But the small female was to angry to be satisfied with that. She lunged the moment the gun was out of his hand. Her jaws grabbed his arm not biting into the skin but gripping it. The captain screamed and struggled causing her teeth to rip into his flesh. The small female began to purump at the taste of his blood. Riddick laid a hand on the haunch of the female, he hadn’t had time to train them. The female was bullheaded and for a moment he wasn’t sure if she was going to release her prey or not. After a tense moment she released his arm and licked her chops glancing at him and then back at Shirah. A moment later the hound bounded toward Shirah and pranced around her like nothing had happened.
“I didn’t hurt anyone!” Riddick laughed at the captain's words but it was a harsh laugh with no real mirth.
“If she wanted to kill you, you would be dead already that was her warning.” Riddick stepped up the ramp and saw that one of the guard brothers was lying on the floor he seemed only to be unconscious. Riddick took a deep breath stalling his anger. “Captain every moment that passes I am regretting letting you live. Do not do anything else that I will regret because next time I will let her kill you.” Both James and the captain looked at Riddick as he turned to face them. “Now go get the rest of your things. We are taking off within the hour.” Riddick clicked and retreated to the pilots chair and the four hounds boarded the ship surrounding him.
“Thank you.” Riddick looked over his shoulder at Shirah when she spoke.
“The pack likes you and I can’t deny them a friend if keeping you alive keeps them happy…” Riddick trailed off as he watched her sit down. “You look so familiar.” Shirah nodded at his words.
“I should I have been searching for you.” As Shirah spoke Riddick pressed a few button’s in succession causing the ramp to close. A few different button’s caused the ship to rumble to life.
“I should move the ship closer so we can leave sooner.” It was a short flight and as soon as the ramp opened the last six hounds climbed onboard. Riddick slumped into the chair and waited patiently for the men to start loading the rest of the ship. Shirah came to sit next to him in the navigation chair. “Why have you been searching for me?”
“Because you’re the only one that knows who I am.” Riddick looked at her confused and shook his head.
“Sir I believe we are…” The one guard knelt by his brother. “What happened?” Riddick shrugged.
“Maybe you should ask the captain.” The guard helped his brother to his feet and sat him down on one of the side benches.
“Sir would you like me to take care of the problem?” A smile played across his lips at the words from the guard's mouth. These brother’s he needed to make an effort to learn their names guard 1 - 6 was not going to work forever.
“Not at the moment.” The guard nodded and disappeared. This reminded Riddick of what happened. “Did he hurt you?” He turned to face the chair she was sitting in his eyes focused on her. Although she could not see his eyes beneath the goggles she wondered what they look like.
“No… he tried to but…” She looked at the female hound. “Your friends, my friends the pack protected me.” Riddick nodded.
“As it should be. They see you as one of the pack.” Riddick almost stumbled over the words but realized that his words were in fact true. Shirah stood nodding and started to walk back to her chair only to be pushed by the female pack member to land in Riddick’s lap. Riddick missed the whole exchange but grabbed her and held her close so that she didn’t fall off the chair. “If you wanted me to carry you again all you had to do was ask..” Shirah looked at him but quickly looked away to the female hound who was already curled up with her eyes closed.
“I… Tripped.” A devilish smile spread across his lips and it appeared that he was going to say something but Shirah licked her lips and he paused. For a long moment he stared at her, taking a deep breath he could smell traces of her but it was covered by a lot of earthy musk. As he stared at her he realized she was a rare type of beauty, her soft lips were drawing him in. Behind them there was a loud bang as a metal box was dropped on the floor and he released her as the hounds growled. But the draw was there and he wouldn’t be able to ignore it forever.
Ten minutes later the ship was packed and as he prepared to take off he glanced at the captain. In the past he would have killed that man instantly and the need to kill him rose up. Whatever had transpired between the two it hadn’t bothered him till just this moment. Eyes refocused on the female hound and as he did her eyes focused on him, no words were exchanged between them. The hound rose to her feet attracting the attention of Shirah but by the time she looked at Riddick he was faced forward. Leisurely the hound walked over to the captain, calculated is the perfect word for what happened. The hound leaned forward sniffed his boot and as the captain sat down in his seat making ready to shove the hound away she turned on him. Jaws closing on his groan one moment and ripping it away the next followed by a swallow. The scream that echoed in the cabin was painful to hear for all but one and a small smile crept across Riddick’s face. Riddick’s voice was empty of emotion when he spoke.
“It was a bad idea to cross me.” Those words were whispered but what he said next was loud enough for everyone on the ship to hear. “Silence him.” The guard that had sat next to him slipped a knife out and with a flick of the wrist embedded it in the captains throat. A couple of the woman stifled a scream and another cried softly. “Do not cry for that bastard.” The woman wiped away her tears and nodded as the ship took off and the hounds drug the body of the captain to the rear of the craft. Once the craft left the planet’s atmosphere Shirah returned to the navigation chair.
“You let her kill him.” Riddick spared her a glance then turned back to the space before him.
“The old me would have killed him when he still held the gun, slipping a knife between the ribs, enjoying the slick feeling of the blood as it spilled all over my hands. So yes I let her kill him. I want to feel that way again. The thrill of the hunt. The pleasure in the blood.” Shirah leaned forward wishing she could see his eyes and not for the first time.
“You don’t take pleasure in it anymore?” It was a real question there was no fear in her voice and he relaxed for a moment.
“Where is the pleasure at the prospect of eternity alone?” Confusion slipped across her face but she did not get a chance to ask him anything else because the com in front of him lit up.
“Lord Marshall Bay 2 is ready for you.” Riddick pressed a few buttons and landed the ship in the bay. A soft thunk as the craft landed but otherwise a gentle landed. Shirah wondered how he could be so gentle and cruel all at the same time.
Simultaneously the ramp descended and the doors to the cargo bay opened. Lord and Dame Vaako walked into the hanger with a few other important members of society. Dam Vaako wore her typical long dress only this time it was silver and her jewelry was made to match the sneer on her face at having to be in proximity of others clear. Servants and other guards appeared behind them. The servants stood patiently waiting to remove the items from the craft and the guards stood behind the nobles waiting for any issues. The ramp was facing away from the collection of people and as the members of the crashed ship descended the ramp Riddick turned to Shirah. As she rose from her seat she watched him, how he moved like a cat with stealth and quiet steps. Riddick grabbed Shirah and pulled her to his side before she could even walk away from him. Words were a whisper close to her ear for her and her alone.
“You are to stay by my side no matter what anyone says.” Eyes lifted to his face the auburn of them slightly glassy and he could have lost himself in them but he shook it off. “You stay by my side.” The small female growled and sneezed but Shirah nodded allowing his arm to remain on her waist. Once they reached the bottom of the ramp his arm dropped not wanting to show anyone any weakness.
“Lord Marshall I trust you had a successful endeavor.” Lord Vaako stepped forward bowing slightly even though his skin crawled.
“Yes, Lord Vaako I did. I trust that everything ran smoothly while I was away.” Lord Vaako gave a curt nod. “ I would like you to put this crew with the other girl we brought back they will all be leaving the ship at the next stop. Oh and there is a mess within the ship that needs to be tended to. Our dear captain thought that he could cause trouble without repercussion.” Lord Vakko showed no outward sign of fear at his Lord’s words.
“And the lady my lord?” Riddick clicked, the alpha male, the smaller female, and the pack filed out of the craft with a peaceful gait.
“She will be staying in a guest room near me and the pack.” Riddick paused in his words as the pack surrounded Shirah and Riddick. “The pack seems to have accepted her.” Riddick saw the flash in Lord Vaako’s eyes before he nodded. “And the six guards, have them rest and tomorrow morning have them report to me.” Vaako nodded again turning to Dame Vaako and the other guards directing them on what to do next.
Riddick turned toward the hallway with the pack around him and when Shirah didn’t follow he turned to see her staring at the inside of the cargo hold. He watched her for a moment and when her attention did not shift he stepped in front of her so that she was forced to look at him. When she did she looked at his face and smiled sheepishly.
“You will have time to explore later but for now I would prefer…” Riddick allowed his eyes to shift to the Lord Vaako as he seemed to pay a little more attention the conversation. “To get the hounds and you settled into your quarters.” Shirah didn’t say anything but nodded softly and when Riddick turned to walk from the cargo hold she was walking beside him. He shortened his gait a little so that she didn’t have to run to keep up with his pace.
“This place is amazing.” Riddick scoffed at her words and shook his head.
“I didn’t decorate it.” Shirah let a smile grace her lips but Riddick avoided looking at her as he was watching the reactions of those people around him. The hounds were going to raise complaints of course but he wouldn’t keep them all with him. There were six guards and there were ten hounds, one would match with a guard leaving four to guard him and Shirah.. His thoughts stopped to guard him AND Shirah he hadn’t even realized his intentions of keeping her with the pack. But if she became a member of the pack then she would have to stay. She would have to be protected as well. Even with the pup. Riddick pulled up short these thoughts had traveled his mind and he almost tripped over one of the hounds. The male looked at him oddly.
“Where is the Pup?” Shirah had been saying something about the walls when she stopped and looked at him her wide eyes full of confusion.
“I don’t know I haven’t seen him since… since we left the planet…” She trailed off Riddick looked at the female and the alpha male to find them both gone. He turned in time to see them heading back to the cargo bay. He turned on his feet and quickly made up the distance. He heard the yells and the clicking of claws as the rest of the pack followed behind. How anyone had forgotten the cub he did not know.
They came into the cargo bay to see a scene that was both hilarious and slightly frightening. The crowd of people were separated to either side of the bay and the ship was left in the open with a lot of the boxes littered in a trail. Dropped in mid walk. Lying on the floor was Lord Vaako not far from him was James and Riddick could see something flicker in his face.
“Would someone like to explain?” James who was closest to him spoke calmly.
“They were unloading the ship when one of the guards grabbed a box and from behind it this pup jumped up. I guess the pup realized the pack wasn’t here so dove for Lord Vaako first. We were sending someone for you because the hound has not moved but when anyone gets close to him he growls wickedly. We were unsure of what to do for you hold them in high esteem.” Riddick nodded pleased that no one had hurt the pup even though it was clear by the stance of the pup he was having trouble restraining himself from attacking Vaako. Riddick stepped forward the pup made no change in the growl.
“So you want to kill him?” Riddick said as he knelt down by Lord Vaako. The pup yelped and growled a little louder. “I would prefer that is not how you start here in my home.” The pup didn’t break eye contact with the man but growled softly. Riddick stood and walked back toward the door and Shirah appeared slightly winded with the last member of the pack. “If that is the way you wished to start your training then by all means pup have at it but know that you will never be the same.” The pup growled again and raised a paw. Lord Vaako showed no fear at least that most could see but Riddick saw the tense in his shoulders.
“No.” Shirah’s word was simple and the pup looked up for the first time breaking eye contact with Vaako and it was in that moment that the fury slipped away and the pup literally pranced off the man’s chest over and jumped right into Shirah awaiting arms. Riddick realized it was a little too much weight for her and was ready as she fell backwards. She was laughing at the pup and he easily picked up Shirah.
“Lady Vaako please see to it that you attend to your husband.” Lady Vaako nodded closing the distance between them. “James.” The younger crew man looked up and Riddick motioned for him to follow he waited patiently while the man came over. Shirah was still in his arms playing with the pup that was on her stomach. She was oblivious to everything else.
“Yes?” Riddick turned and started to walk back the way he came.
“Walk with me I have a few questions for you.” James quickly followed and listened intently.
“You don’t wish to be where you right now do you?” People moved out of their way as they moved down the hall. Shirah did not appear to be listening but Riddick had a feeling that she was listening intently.
“Do you mean on this ship specifically or previously in alliance with a man that can’t keep professional at crucial moments?” Riddick shifted slightly as they turned a corner, the alpha male was taking the normal path to his rooms. Which encased a large section of populated areas so that all could see not just the pack but Shirah and the pup as well.
“Both.” James sighed and shook his head.
“Well this ship is wonderful but I have heard stories… Comparatively, I believe it might be better here than anywhere else. I have been jumping from place to place for as long as I can remember.” Riddick nodded solemnly shifting Shirah slightly.
“If your interested go find Lord Vaako he can explain the… conversion is your choice but there is a group of brothers that I am sure they would be happy to have one more join their ranks.” James stopped and looked at him.
“Are you offering me a job?” Riddick paused and turned to face him, James couldn’t see his eyes for the goggles still covered them.
“I am offering a home for you. You seem inclined to protect Shirah and I will need people to protect her if she is going to be attending the pack.” James looked back and forth from the two of them.
“I…” James paused and hung his head. “Are you two an item?” Riddick had always been quick to see people’s emotions and in James’s eyes, he could see dejection. Riddick shifted slightly unsure of what to say in answer to him. Shirah was first to answer him and her words surprised both males.
“James, I know you are attracted to me but I am unable to return that feeling. For one even if I did you are not…” Shirah took a deep breath but reassured herself she had to be clear and not lead him on in any way. “We are not compatible and I have to look to the future of my people.” James shook his head. “If you stayed there are many other woman that I am sure would find you attractive and it would be a home but hold no delusions please.” Riddick sighed it was clear to him that James cared for her and that was one of the reasons he had wanted the man close.
“Can… Can I think about it?” James ran a hand through his stark blonde hair.
“We should reach our next stop in a couple of days. Take that time to think it over.” Riddick placed Shirah on her feet and held out his hand to James. James firmly grasped his hand and a surprise washed over his face in the strength he found in Riddick’s grip.
“I want you to know that even if I don’t accept it that I… Just thank you.” Riddick nodded at James’s words 9and watched as the man walk back to the cargo bay.
“That did not go as I intended.” Shirah smiled and put the pup on the ground. He glanced at her and watched the way her form moved. He couldn’t help the sudden attraction he had to grab her turn her to him and kiss her. He resisted the urge and than realized that she had not answered James’s question directly. Most people didn’t answer questions directly if they knew the answer was yes. “You did not answer his question.” She stood and turned to face him but her eyes were hidden behind a mask.
“Aye cause I didn’t really know what to say.” Riddick got a feeling that there were many things that she would rather not speak of in a public place.
“Very well lets get this pack settled and then we can speak of those things.” She seemed more relaxed than he realized what she had meant and again the group followed the alpha male to the Lord Marshall’s main rooms.
