Jesse's eyes flickered as the sunlight fell upon her through the trees. It was once again high-noon. After last evening's discovery, they accepted they were on another planet and started to debate on why they were there. It had become physically and mentally exhausting to Jesse, and she fell asleep first. Like she had told them, she slept like the dead, having not heard the many heated arguments they'd went through.
She stretched and crawled out of the rickety shelter, rubbing her bare arms. The freckles on them had expanded and the milky white in between had pinkened after the extreme exposure of yesterday. Because the sun barely moved over the sky, they hadn't realized how far they had traveled-- they'd managed to travel enough to further themselves from the pole to see the horizon shift slightly, the planet spin on the axis. It hadn't felt like the sun had disappeared for long, maybe only giving them a few hours of night. Jesse must have slept much longer than them though.
She had saved them, too. Before they found the stream, they had stumbled upon a grove of beautiful, exotic red flowers. Curiously, Mop-head had went to inspect one, but Jesse stopped him. She might not have been able to know what species they were, but she knew by their appearance they were deadly. A vibrant red among a world of mute greens and browns was a symbol of warning. The sharp, needle-like petals meant their might be a toxin within them. Not wanting to experiment, they steered clear of the grove.
Standing in a circle, speaking in hushed voices, the group of men argued and made frustrated hand gestures. She didn't focus on what they said at first and started looking around. She didn't see Rina.
"Hey," she called to them, "Where'd Rina run off to?" She assumed she went to relieve herself in private, but thought she would ask in case she went searching for food or to retrieve more water wanting to possibly help her.
They stopped talking and looked at her with stern irritation. "That's what we're trying to figure out," Donnelson replied.
The look on Jesse's face stiffened. "What? What happened?"
"We woke up, and she was gone," Trevor spat. He kicked over a stack of dry wood and sticks.
As the wood fell along the rocks, the sound of a twig snapping caught Jesse's and the Colonel's attentions.
"Rina?" Jesse called out and ran towards the noise.
"No, wait, Jesse," the Colonel yelled, trying to jump into her path. She had already made it to the next set of trees. The Colonel got close behind her and grabbed her shoulders. He pulled her backwards gently, and that was when he noticed she was staring intently at one of the trees. He bent over slightly almost resting his chin on her shoulder. "What did you see?" He whispered into her ear.
Jesse's lower lip trembled. "You cant?" she replied in a whisper so soft he barely heard her. "It's still there..."
The Colonel's eye widened. He quickly threw Jesse backwards and drew his gun from his belt. As he spun to start shooting into the trees, something sharp stuck into his shoulder. He cried out a guttural noise and jumped behind the tree. "We're under fire!!"
Donnelson was the first to react and started firing his MP5 into the trees, keeping care not to fire too close to the Colonel and not while Jesse tried to run away. Trevor grabbed for Jesse when she came close enough. Flynn ran up to them. "Get her away from here," he ordered as best he could trying to not fall into German. He spun and aimed his gun into the trees. He didn't see the three red dots tracing up his chest.
The Colonel did; he knew what laser sight looked like. "Flynn--!!"
A blue light shot out from the trees and landed square into the large man's chest. Blood spattered out of the exit would in his back. The air smelled of burnt flesh, blood, and sulphur. He fell to the ground with a splatter.
"Fuck!"
"Flynn! No!" Jesse heard and saw the blast. She screamed in terror.
"Trevor, go!" Lou ran over to Flynn and grabbed his gun. He pushed into Trevor and ran with them. Donnelson, Samadi, and the Colonel joined them. Donnelson tossed Samadi an automatic pistol from his belt. The two started firing behind them at nothing. They didn't know what they were shooting at, but whatever it was, it had already killed one of them.
Jesse stumbled, and the Colonel caught her. "I got you Ashley," he said.
She didn't notice he called her that. She saw the metal object sticking out of his shoulder. Suddenly, more shot forward from their left. They were not fired anywhere near Jesse, but the Colonel rolled over her to shield her anyway.
"Fuck!" Lou was hit in the leg. He knelt down and started firing both his pistols into the forest.
A loud roar startled them all. To Jesse it was like a mix of a lion and a jaguar, deep and gutteral but carried small breaks between the noises. They all looked to the roar and watched as blue lightning encircled the air, a green smear floating in the midst of it. Lou and Trevor wanted to continue firing but were too paralyzed by the site. The lightning sparked and hissed. The air started to shift and then an opaque color appeared between sparks. The color spread filling in the air. The color multiplied into many making up the skin and armor of their attacker. First the arms, then the chest. The head, and the rest of the massive, brown body came into sight.
It was unlike anything Jesse had ever seen. It stood like a man. It's skin was beige and brown, striped along the sides and arms leaving a light colored underbelly. It had claws on all of its digits. Its feet were like an animals, four clawed toes and a pastern claw on the back of the heel. It had hair like rubber tubes, brown like the stripes, with attachments or beads on them. It wore armor on its shoulders and upper chest only covering the top half of the pectorals. Similar armor covered his groin and thighs, a belt of the suede-like material wrapped around the waist. A netting extended down both his arms between the shoulder plates and wrist gauntlets and over his legs. A large metal mask covered the face, reaching over the forehead and back towards the hair. It wore a macabre decor on the belt and around its neck of small bones. A strange metal object protruded from its shoulder.
As it growled, a sound like a cross of a crocodile and a cougar, the metal protrusion shifted and pointed at Lou. Then the red dots appeared.
"Move!" The Colonel yelled and grabbed Jesse up from the ground. Lou didn't have to think long on it. He rolled and started firing at the thing. As he did a blue light shot towards where he'd been and exploded the tree roots and ground. The Colonel pushed Jesse away onto her feet. "Run," he yelled and started firing at the thing also.
"Trevor!" She ran as best she could to catch up to him. He hadn't even realized they'd been left behind, his heart beating in his throat and ears. The sound of his name made him skid to a halt. He spun to see Jesse running to him, red-faced and tear streaked cheeks.
He might have been a criminal, but he wasn't heartless-- he reached his arms to her coaching her on. He wouldn't leave a young, defenseless woman behind. "Come on! Come on--" That was when he saw it. It was in the tree, some sort of humanoid being. It was watching Jesse as she approached. He drew his gun to fire upon it, but all he heard was a click. He was out of bullets. "Jesse, look out!"
She saw him point his weapon into the trees. She stopped and looked up. Another one of the beings stood on a strong branch staring down at her. It tilted its head as it saw her staring at it.
Naranarti had been spotted. He'd decloaked after M'yreti fired his dart gun. He didn't think it would have taken them this long to have spotted him. Mhrende was in the trees further down with the other two. His main concerns were that they didn't fire upon the small female.
Another thing that bothered him...Where is theother female?
Jesse saw the shadow drop down upon the being first. Naranarti had also noticed the shadow along with the estrogen scent, but little too late. He twisted to look up and behind him just as the other female slammed into him, both falling to the ground.
Rina had been watching everyone form the tree tops, carefully traveling on the delicate branches of the canopy. She'd been more concerned about Jesse but was relieved that they hadn't even taken aim at her. When she saw the one just under her watching Jesse, she had to react. She free=fell onto him and slammed him into the ground below, tumbling into Jesse's path. She grabbed her wrist and slung her towards Trevor, who'd finally found a new clip. He was going to shoot the thing, but Rina yelled at him. "Go! I got this one!"
He pointed the pistol away and waited for Jesse to run passed him before running. He hadn't been paying attention, though, and caught the close-line arm hard in the throat. It felt like someone had hit him in the neck with a bat made of bricks.
Mhrende decloaked and aimed his plasma castor at the funny-dressed ooman.
Jesse didn't see it and continued running.
Rina had a personal rule. Don't kill people. This thing didn't look like any "people" she'd ever seen before. She drew a Desert Eagle from behind her back and aimed at the creature. It jumped up and looked at her. The noise it made gave her a chill. It was a series of trilling clicks that almost sounded like laughter. She got a look at the front of the helmet.
She dropped the gun.
"Trevor!" Jesse had finally noticed she left him.
Just when he thought he was going to die, Samadi fired on the red and ruddy colored thing before the blue light could leave the shoulder-cannon device. It spun and roared at Samadi, who'd ran around the fight towards them. He screamed in Persian as he ran at the thing firing his pistol and the machine gun Donnelson had given to him. He was like a mad man. Trevor appreciated it nonetheless and rolled to his feet in a swift maneuver. He started shooting at the thing, it getting hit from either side.
Mhrende recloaked and shot netting at the two from his wrists. The net caught Trevor in his lower half, a tack of some kind sticking into his belly in several places. Samadi had been engulfed by the net and was on the ground struggling. Trevor looked out to Jesse. "Run, Jess, run!!"
The Colonel saw the mess the others had gotten into and decided to help, as the one being they had been fighting retreated back into the forest. He ran towards Rina and the second being.
Rina and Naranarti had looked over to the commotion his other student had caused. He glanced over to the small female. She was heading east. That's when sudden panic struck him. He knew what was east of there. But did she?
Naranarti took off after the small speckled female, ignoring the other who'd tackled him. He could hear their weak burners firing at him, but he didn't even flinch when one of the shots grazed his back, bouncing off his armor.
"Run, Jesse! Oh God! Run!" Rina shrieked snatching up her gun. The Colonel ran passed her after the two. He stopped pointing the gun, trying to gain speed. It didn't take long for Rina to catch up.
Jesse could hear the heavy foot steps behind her. She serpentined around the trees. This didn't help. She heard it grab onto the trunks and pivot from one to the other. It was back into the trees and after her. She just had to keep running. As she lept over a set of thorn bushes, the being jumped down right behind her.
The Colonel and Rina saw the thing grab Jesse by the hair, then sling its arm around her waist. It slammed her into the ground and turned to face them. Rina screamed and started firing her gun at Naranarti. She hit the mask and the armored parts and watched bullets bounce off with light sparks jumping through the air. The damn thing knew to protect the vital parts.
Naranarti looked down at Jesse and clicked. She could only stare back up at him in awe and confusion. This amused him slightly. The bullets bouncing off him though were beginning to be annoying however, and he heard the victorious roars of his students in the background. He said something he was certain she did not understand but felt he needed to say anyway, turned on his cloak, and lept into the trees, disappearing from sight.
Rina ran over to where it had stood and pointed the Desert Eagle into the air. She could only see small leaves falling to the ground. The thing was gone, rejoining its comrades no doubt.
The Colonel fell next to Jesse and wrapped his arms around her, cradling her and rocking back and forth. "Ashley! Thank God you're safe, Ashley!"
Rina glanced at him. Who is Ashley?
Donnelson and Lou caught up to them with Trevor limping behind them. "They got Samadi," he said between grit teeth. He glared at Rina. "I'm sure you saw them get Flynn. Where the fuck have you been, bitch!?"
"Watching for the enemy," she hissed.
"Yeah, well you sure watched them right great," Trevor yelled.
"I don't give a shit about you fucks! You can take of yourselves!" She nodded her head a Jesse. "She can't!"
Trevor realized Jesse was on the ground. He knelt down beside her. "Holy shit, did it hurt you?"
She shook her head. "No."
"Are you hurt at all?" The Colonel reached behind her head where the being had grabbed her hair. No blood. He pressed on her stomach, and she didn't flinch. No bruising.
"No."
"Did it say anything? Do anything?" Rina asked.
Jesse thought about the question then shook her head. "It saved me," she whispered.
"What?" Lou and Donnelson asked among themselves.
"What? Saved you?" The Colonel leaned over her and looked into her eyes. She looked just as confused as they were.
She slowly pointed towards the thorn-shrubs.
Rina, Donnelson and the Colonel slowly stepped towards the bushes. Donnelson and Rina carefully slipped through them. They heard rocks slip and fall against other rocks. The sound echoing. "Holy mother of God," the Colonel murmured. He was tall enough to peer over the bushes...
And down the cliff side maybe a kilometer or more, a dark blue river below them fed by an underground waterfall on the other side.
They slowly twisted and looked back at the confused and shocked Jesse, all eyes on her.
