Geoffrey nearly choked on his drink when he heard what the Admiral said,
and looked at him. “She did what?” It was more a question of amazement then
an actual request for him to repeat what he had said. “I hope she received a
thorough thrashing for such a thing!”
“Don’t be an ass. She was scared to death, and I can’t see myself
raising a hand to her for being frightened. Frankly . . . in the back of my mind
I almost feel . . . intrigued that she would take the initiative to try and
protect herself from what she was afraid of.” James said a little surprised at
his own words taking a drink from his glass.
“So, if you didn’t thrash her for the hatpin, what did you do?”
Geoffrey asked a bit confused at the Admiral’s attitude.
“What could I do? I told her to go to sleep and I tended my wound.
Hardly a scratch really, needless to say that a nightly search is going to be
conducted before retiring from now on.” James sighed and covered his eyes,
“I certainly managed to get more then I bargained for with this marriage.”
“You’re being far to understanding with this girl, James.” Geoffrey
said finally, “If you want my opinion, she’ll learn quick enough in a couple
weeks, tops. Your expecting to much if you think your going to get her to trust
you like you seem to be hoping she will.”
“You think so?” The Admiral questioned.
“Look, if you want children any time in the future, you’re going to
simply have to do your husbandly duty regardless of her naivety in those areas.
She won’t be naive for long, and will simply learn as time passes.”
“Yes, and in the meantime view me as a monster. Good thinking there,
Geoffrey.” Norrington said with a sigh. “Of course I want children, but I
made a promise to her father that I would be patient with her and it’s only
now I understand why he asked me for that promise.”
His friend sighed and shrugged slightly finishing his drink before
filling his glass again. He thought for a moment before looking at the Admiral,
“You know, perhaps your going about this the wrong way, James.”
Norrington looked over after taking a drink from his own glass, “Hmm,
What do you mean?”
“Well, why not make her come to you?” James didn’t quite understand
how he was supposed to manage that and just looked at Geoffrey.
“Just, how do you propose I do that?”
“There are ways. Haven’t you ever seduced anyone before? Of course
you have, I’ve known you long enough. Putting the fact aside that she is your
wife, why should this be any different?”
“Because, it would be like trying to bed a nun. A young nun that has
just entered the order at that, and I just don’t think I’m capable of
putting myself in that frame of mind at any point.” Norrington said taking a
deep drink.
Geoffrey starred at him for a moment, “Her age does bother you
doesn’t it.”
“It’s not her age so much as the way she was raised. I can’t
understand Walter, her father, felt it necessary to put her into a windowless a
box at birth and keep her there until one day he took her out and awarded her to
a man as a bride. How am I supposed to be a husband with all the rites there of
and gain any trust from this girl at the same time? It’s absolutely impossible
and it certainly isn’t going to be fair to at least one of us.”
“As it is James, it won’t be long before another commission comes
through for you. I suggest that you be the one who takes the fairness. Rites for
now and trust to come later with age and maturity.” Geoffrey said counseling
his friend the best he could. “All I can tell you is that she’ll learn with
time.”
Norrington sighed looking into his glass, “Any other words of
wisdom?” he said feeling as though there wasn’t much else that was going to
help.
“Make sure that she’s not carrying anything that can be used as a
weapon when entering your bedchamber.”
Aislinn was literally a quiet and evasive presence in the house. Afraid
to speak, afraid to be heard, and afraid to be seen. It was as though she felt
ashamed and a deep remorse for how she had acted, yet she had been unable to
control herself in her time of fear. Once, when Norrington walked by a room on
his way to his study, he did hear her voice. He paused by the door and listened
for a moment quietly pushing it open an inch further so he could hear better.
She was saying a rosary, and deep in prayer pleading for forgiveness for the way
she had been acting.
James pulled the door close giving her the privacy that she had
apparently assumed she had found to begin with. It was obvious that he wasn’t
the only one who was conflicted about the current situation. Aislinn seemed to
be aware that she wasn’t conducting herself properly, but wasn’t sure what
the correct way was. If something didn’t feel right, then it was human nature
to shy away from it. How could one really be faulted for that, especially when
they weren’t properly schooled in such things? Oh someone was to blame for
this but it certainly wasn’t Aislinn. Unfortunately it seemed she was the one
who was going to have to pay for it.
That evening, James had taken an extra precaution since he had to go by
his study to sign a few documents before retiring after dinner. He had the maid
accompany Aislinn to their room and gave her specific instructions not to leave
her side until he came up for the night. Needless to say, the young woman had a
look of confusion on her face as she looked at the maid and then James but did
as she was told and went with the woman upstairs to their room.
It seemed like a logical enough solution to one problem, but Norrington
certainly didn’t want to make her feel like a prisoner so he was quick in his
task and made his way upstairs. In the side room, he removed his outer clothes
has he had done the night before leaving only his white blouse undershirt and
trousers. Then he came into the main bedchamber reliving the maid of her duties
for the evening so she could retire herself. When they were alone, James locked
the door securely before walking into the main part of the room finding Aislinn
dressed for bed sitting in a chair quietly.
“Well.” He said. “Here we are, again.”
Aislinn wasn’t sure about the tone in his voice, but was certain he was
cross with her just by the fact he had sent the maid with her to their room.
“I’m sorry I hurt you.” She apologized for stabbing him the night before.
The Admiral nodded slightly, “Me too.” He honestly wished that she
didn’t, she’d put them both in a rather awkward position with that maneuver,
clever as it might have been. “I was trying to make things less difficult for
you Aislinn . . . now . . .” He just stopped there, knowing that there
wasn’t really anything more he could say on the subject.
Taking off his cufflinks, he put them on the table rolling up his sleeves
walking over to her. She started to back peddle slightly even though there
wasn’t anywhere to go. James reached down wrapping his arm under hers and
bought her to her feet standing her there for a moment. Reaching up with both
hands he ran his fingers through her hair and around her neck. Then he continued
down her shoulders and over the rest of her searching every inch of her. He
paused around one of the folds at her hip finding it a bit stiffer then proper.
He arched a brow and ran his fingers through the folds pausing at the object. He
pulled another weapon that she had pinned into place from the material, holding
it up in front of her eyes. It seemed somewhat larger then the one she had used
the night before and he could only imagine what that one would have felt like.
James reached over sticking it in the chair using that as a pincushion
giving a sigh. Turning back towards her his hands returned to her neck as he
began to unbutton her nightgown, deciding it would simply be easier then getting
another rude surprise if she managed to hide something he didn’t come across
until it was to late.
Aislinn’s hands shot up and grabbed his wrists and her eyes had that
scared rabbit look again. “Would you prefer to remove it yourself?” He
questioned. Aislinn shook her head quickly indicating she didn’t want to
remove it at all. “Aislinn.” Norrington said again in a tone that let her
know that she couldn’t keep the nightgown. She’d lost that privilege, and as
he’d told her the night before, she couldn’t hide from him.
The young woman’s eyes closed a moment as she swallowed the lump in her
throat and her eyes turned downcast, her grip on the Admiral’s wrists
loosening. James continued to unbutton down the front of her gown until it was
sufficiently opened, and his hands moved back up lacing under the material at
her shoulders. Only he found that Aislinn’s hands once again clutched at his
wrists, trying to halt him. “What are you so afraid of?” He questioned.
“Your not doing anything wrong, I promise you.” He said.
“We’re . . .” She started to say but quickly bit her lip.
Norrington waited and then tried to coax her to speak to him a bit more,
“Yes?” This was certainly more progress then had been made before.
Looking from left to right as if she was afraid someone would hear her,
she motioned for him to come closer. James leaned down so she could speak, and
she leaned close and whispered in his ear. The admiral looked at her a moment,
“Well . . . of course your not, but that doesn’t apply to your husband.
Didn’t the sisters at least explain that much before you left the convent?”
She shook her head a little. “No, of course they didn’t.” He sighed,
“Your allowed to show your body to me Aislinn . . . it’s one of my
privileges, is to see you that way.”
The look on her face said that she was still very much against it, “How
about obeying your husband . . . that one your familiar with and certain of,
correct?” That struck a cord, the words and his tone. Aislinn paused as if she
remembered suddenly that she was not behaving in a way she was supposed to. Her
eyes lowered and stayed that way as her hands lowered to her sides and she stood
there obediently.
There was a definite, although unintentional, talent for making him feel
as though he was quite the tyrant at times. Pausing for a moment he watched he
demeanor change from a spark of self-preservation to that of an obedient slave.
Hardly a feeling anyone wanted, that was for certain. He decided it was best to
press on, and not linger at this uncomfortable juncture for to long.
Reaching up once more his fingertips moved under the material at her
shoulders and gently slid it off her shoulders. Careful not to jerk her about or
anything of that nature as he let her gown fall to the floor. One could not help
but look over their new bride, and be pleased as punch with the fresh young
beautiful body that stood before them in the candlelight. James knew for a fact
that she was disarmed now so there was no danger of being maimed.
Young as she was, she was fully mature for her age. Her skin was pink,
soft and there was no part of her that wasn’t completely alluring. The blush
to her cheeks only made her even more lovely and spell binding. Stepping closer,
James wrapped his arm around her pulling her naked body against his as he kissed
her deeply. His other hand reached up sliding his fingers through her hair,
loving the silky feeling against his skin.
Norrington strayed from her lips and kissed her neck wrapping his arms
around her pulling her tighter against his body. Aislinn was being as
cooperative as she could, but when she started to get uncomfortable he could
tell because she started to pull back slightly. Rather then struggle, James
swiped her up into his arms disabling her completely.
The Admiral carried his young bride over to the large bed and laid her
down, pausing a moment and pulling his shirt over his head tossing it aside
before laying over her wrapping his arms around her and finding her lips to
taste them again.
A while later, the two bodies lay entwined with one another. James held
Aislinn in his arms with her head resting against his chest. Finally he decided
that it was time to say something since neither of them seem to be sleeping.
“Are you alright?” He asked softly. She nodded a little bringing her hand
closer to her lips covering her mouth with her knuckles starring across the
room. “Not that . . . it’s really something I’m in the habit of
conversation after. . .” He stopped that sentence right there deciding that it
was not only inappropriate to say but not knowledge anyone would share with ones
wife at any time for any reason. “What I mean to say is . . . is there
anything you’d like to talk about? Anything you would like to . . .
discuss?”
“When may I go back to the convent?” She questioned in a soft voice.
James had hardly expected that and he raised his head to look down at her.
“I’m sorry?” Go back to the convent? She didn’t seriously think
she would ever be returning there to live did she? That this was a temporary
situation that would come to an end, and she would go back to living in solitude
as she had for her entire life.
“To visit the sisters. Will I ever see them again?” Oh thank God. Of
course she wasn’t that incredibly naive. He felt foolish for even considering
that she might be for a moment. It was just in this one particular area that she
didn’t seem to be in any way prepared. As far as keeping house and other
things such as social graces she seemed very well taught and highly skilled.
“I don’t see why not, but not for sometime at least. I suppose your
feeling a bit homesick, never having left the grounds before the wedding.”
Homesick, lost, disoriented, terrified, any number of words could describe how
she was feeling. “You’ll become accustomed to your new life in time.”
“My father?” She questioned.
“Is away to Italy on business.” Norrington looked down at her again,
wondering now if she was trying to find a retreat or someone she could run to.
Any sort of escape that she could find. “Aislinn . . . please.” He said.
“You have to make an effort on some level to become accustomed to me.” James
moved to sit up sitting her up as well and taking her hand. The young woman
quickly grasped the blanket holding it up around her to cover herself. “I know
your scared, I know you’ve been thrown into the thick of a world that you’ve
been told about but haven’t seen first hand until now . . . but I promise that
I am not going to do anything to harm you.”
Aislinn looked at him a little weary of those words and Norrington
realized he backed himself into a corner, “It’s painful in the beginning,
but the discomfort will go away before to long. It’s just something that for
some reason . . .” how was he going to explain this? He wasn’t a woman and
it certainly felt strange trying to explain it to one. This was a mother’s job
or at the very least, another woman’s. “The first time a husband takes his
virgin bride it’s not easy, it’s like . . . it’s like opening the seal on
a letter. You have to break through the wax seal to unfold the parchment.” He
paused a moment wondering if that made any sense at all. “The bright side is
that it only has to be . . . done once.”
“Must we talk about this?” She asked her face beat red.
“Not anymore, thank God.” He said with a sigh of relief. “But do
you understand? You’ll heal and any discomfort you have will diminish.”
She sighed a little, “If that is what you say, Admiral Norrington.”
She said softly.
“James.” He corrected really not wanting to have her address him like
that already feeling like her elder and wanting to bridge that gap however
possible.
Aislinn paused a moment, “James.” She repeated. Norrington smiled and
touched her face, stroking her cheek gently.
Aislinn was sitting at a table writing a letter outlining materials that
were needed to make a few improvements to the house, and some redecorating that
she had in mind for some rooms of the house. Of course Norrington had given her
leave to make whatever changes she wanted since it was her privilege to do so
and she needed something to do to fill her days.
“Lady Norrington?” The housekeeper said coming in from another room,
“I’m sorry to disturb you but there is a visitor here for Admiral
Norrington.”
“Oh.” Aislinn said putting her quill down closing the ink. “But,
the Admiral is not at the house right now. I’m not sure when he will
return.” She said standing from where she sat walking with the housekeeper.
“I know, M’lady. That’s what I tried to explain to the gentlemen,
but he was so insistent that he simply wouldn’t be turned away.” Aislinn
looked at the housekeeper and hurried down the stairs with her as she took her
to the parlor where the guest was waiting. “Jason Statwell, M’lady.”
The young lady smiled politely as she entered the room. The man looked
stunned at the beauty of the girl as his eyes moved over her. It was much like a
dog would look at a steak, if a steak were able to walk. He took her hand and
grinned, “I’m truly honored.”
Aislinn remained gracious, “I’m really very sorry, my husband is away
and I’m not sure what hour he will be returning. Perhaps you could call
another time and I could tell him that you came by?” She said.
“Oh, that’s alright. I had heard that James had married but I was
unable to attend his wedding. Honestly I had no idea he had such exquisite
taste, but now I can see he has quite the eye for quality.” Aislinn looked
down at herself when she saw that he was looking over her again feeling a little
strange. “Perhaps we could take this opportunity to get acquainted.”
“I . . . suppose . . . if you would like to stay for lunch, that it
could be arranged?” Aislinn said trying to be a good hostess even though she
was starting to wish for the solitude that she had been enjoying earlier.
“Excellent!” The young lady smiled jumping a little at the boisterous
response. She half smiled and walked towards the door, calling for the
housekeeper and requesting that another place be made for their guest.
Aislinn turned back knowing it would be sometime before lunch would be
served, “So . . . Lord Statwell . . . what shall we talk about to fill the
time until the table is set?” She questioned, not quite sure what to do.
Suddenly the man started to approach her rather quickly causing Aislinn’s
smile to fade slightly, and her to match pace backing up quickly until she found
herself cornered when her back hit the wall.
“Shall we talk about you then? You can tell me everything about
yourself and we can . . . learn about each other and become better
acquainted.” He said with a smile resting his hand on the wall besides her
leaning closer. “Tell me something about yourself my dear.”
“. . . I . . . my name is Aislinn?” She said wondering what the heck
he meant feeling as though he was far to close. He half smiled and started to
reach up to touch her face.
“And she’s deadly with a hatpin.” Norrington’s voice came from
behind him. The smile on Jason’s face faded as he looked around to see James
looking at him as he crossed his arms arching a brow. Aislinn took the moment
that he was distracted ducking under his arm and moving away to what she
considered a safe distance.
“James? Hello! I was . . . under the impression that you were gone for
the day.” The man said without really considering how that sounded when he was
just caught making inappropriate advances towards a married young woman.
“Obviously. Is there something you wanted or did you simply come by to
shorten your life expectancy, making sure that you continue being up to your old
habits regardless whose threshold you cross.” Norrington was well aware of
this mans reputation. He’d known him many years, and a ring on a woman’s
finger meant nothing but more of a challenge.
“James, I can imagine what it looked like when you walked in, but I was
simply introducing myself to your lovely new bride.” Jason said quickly making
his excuse. “I would never ever take such an advantage, my old friend.”
Norrington simply smiled, as he wouldn’t trust his ‘old friend’
with a tin pocket watch much less his young, beautiful, and naive bride. “Oh
of course not.” He said giving him a look. “I know you would never do such a
thing, considering I would have to hang you from the nearest tree and leave you
there until your bones were bleached from the sun.”
Jason just starred at James realizing that he wasn’t joking even though
he wore a smile. His attention turned from Jason for a moment, “Aislinn, will
you excuse us for a moment.” She looked between the two men and did what she
was told immediately turning and leaving the room closing the door behind. James
looked back at Jason.
“For heaven’s sake James.” Jason said finding himself properly
scared out of his wits.
“If you can’t behave yourself then you won’t be welcomed in my
house ever again, am I clear?” He scolded in a very serious tone. “This is a
friendly warning, Jason and the only one you will receive.”
