Chapter 3: Devil's Bargain the First
When he re-entered his cabin, Elizabeth was standing at the table, looking over the maps and charts. Her face and hair were bathed in candlelight. She was lovely, but somehow different. He cocked his head as he tried to figure out what it was.
She seemed... older. Not in a bad way, only somehow... rounder. She had lost some of her coltish thinness and it had been replaced with a more womanly grace. It was how she carried herself, no longer rushed but stately. No longer girlishly flirtatious, but, to his chagrin, still deliciously seductive. Even when she was just standing there, a mysterious smile playing about her lips.
Thinking about your husband? he queried, hoping the bitterness didn't bleed through into his voice.
She turned her face toward him, rosy lips slightly parted, and grinned. No.
Well, what then? he asked as he swaggered into the room, wrist waving. Happy thoughts? Rum, perhaps? This last was said almost against her cheek, as he leaned in to punctuate his words. No, probably not. He paused. Elizabeth, it strikes me that we've never sat down to a proper meal. Care for a bite to eat?
I'm not hungry, she said softly, her eyes falling back to the map. Is this where we are?
He came up behind her, peering over her shoulder. I think so. Right... here. He seized the excuse to cover her pale, soft hand with his own, and pointed her delicate finger.
His touch nearly burned her hand. She could smell him, now, the salt and sea and hint of something spicy and exotic. She turned her head a fraction, and her nose was almost against his neck. The scent of his skin seemed to permeate her blood. Her pulse began to pound in her ears. Oh, no... not again.
She had thought herself cured of Jack. She thought that in the month or so since she and Will were married - quite happily - the humiliating desires she had for Jack would fade, like the smell of the sea when she journeyed inland. Instead, they seemed to have intensified. Ever since she saw him in Tortuga, she was tormented with visions of Jack, touching her, kissing her. And since she was married, she had (unfortunately) a much clearer picture of exactly what she'd like him to do. She now knew the possibilities afforded to her by her body, and all the delicious sensations that came with a lover. A good lover. Like Will. Like Jack would be... she thought.
Thought? Perhaps she ought to stop fooling herself, because she knew the heights to which Jack could bring her. She forbade herself to think about the night, right there in his cabin on the Queen Elizabeth, when he had kissed her within an inch of her life, set her breasts and belly afire with his lazy, slow kisses and nearly brought her over a terrifying precipice with only his hand, that same browned, work-roughened hand that was now covering hers on the map. She pulled her gaze away, and it fell, not so fortuitously, on his full-lipped, eminently kissable mouth. She had since learned what a mouth like that could do, what incredibly erotic pleasures it could bring. She suppressed a delightful shudder.
No! She had to get out of this, now. Now.
Cold? Jack asked, turning his face toward her. His hand crept slowly up to her elbow, grasping her upper arm. Want me to warm you up, love?
Elizabeth, somehow, could not help but grin. Captain Sparrow! I'll ask you to refrain from that kind of talk. I'm a married woman now.
Yes, so I perceive, Jack said with a frown, shadows of a pout plaguing his generous mouth. I've no objection to doing away with the talking, if you've no objection to the suggestion I suggested in the first place.
Her eyes searched his. What?
Come now, don't play coy. You can fool that husband of yours, but you can't fool me.
The devil I can't. I could be fooling you right now.
Meaning?
You don't know if I'm married or if I'm not.
Well, if you're not, I don't see what all the fuss is about.
And if I am?
I still fail to see the problem.
I'll not betray Will.
Again.
Pardon?
You'll not betray Will, again. The way I see it, you've betrayed him twice, an' me twice, which seems to make it his turn again. With this he took both her shoulders in his hand, stepping back with one booted foot to stare in her eyes. I could make you.
You could not, she countered, willing her voice to be steady despite the jellylike feeling in her knees. You're despicable.
Pirate, he said with a shrug and a renewed glitter in his eye. But I still can seduce you. Easily.
Could not.
Could too, he insisted. Care to make it interesting?
As though it wasn't already interesting enough to cause her to self-immolate.
Name your price, she said, meeting his level gaze.
You, he said simply. You give yourself to me, completely, for the duration of the voyage, without reservation or complaint. And you don't cry to Will and have him come after me with something pointy, savvy?
Rules?
I employ my considerable skills to seduce you. The first sound you make out loud spells your defeat. I'll even be generous and concede you a single moan, for free.
Elizabeth blushed to the roots of her hair. Turnabout's fair play.
Meaning?
The same goes for you. If you make a sound, I win.
What do you want?
She thought for a moment, glancing around. Then she smiled, almost wickedly. The Elizabeth.
Jack drew back, agape, still meeting her eyes. Then he grinned. You don't really think I'd bet my ship for that sweet bottom of yours, do you? I grant you, while it is an outstanding one- he peered around her to confirm - it's hardly worth an entire ship.
You underestimate me, and overestimate this collection of driftwood you call a ship.
Collection of -!
Take it or leave it. You can still walk away. Captain.
His mind raced. How could he even consider this ridiculous game of chance? What had he gotten himself into? He should have just grabbed her and kissed her to shut her up. Now she'd embroiled him in this betting fiasco. You're a fool, Jack Sparrow, that warning voice in the back of his mind chided. You're going to lose your ship and your freedom to that girl. Again.
Nonsense, he answered it. Elizabeth's practically an innocent. She's no match for me.
As his blood began to surge and his heart seemed to swell and knock around inside his chest, he nodded to her, inches away from her face. Agreed, he murmured, and his mouth descended on hers.
