Disclaimer: I do not own The Mummy movie series, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
To Morningstar: Thanks
for reviewing again. I know there hasn't been much of Alex and
Jonathan up till now, but I promise, that I'll try to change that. As
I have planned the story, they will definitely be important in the
end. They get their (short) moment in this chapter too.
Chapter 3 – Unfamiliar Observations
“ Where exactly are we
headed?”
Ardeth, Rick, Jonathan
and Alex had immediately set out from Cairo. The Med-jai had only
told them, that they had to hurry, but not where they were going. It
was already midday and the sun was beating down mercilessly upon the
desert.
Turning to Rick, who
was riding next to him, Ardeth answered: “We need to find the
temple of Maat. That is where the mirror of Osiris is hidden.”
“And there we will also find
the directions, where to look for the four keys?”
Ardeth had explained to
them, that in order to open the book of Isis four keys were needed.
They had to find them before Nefertiri, although Rick still called
her Evy in his head, could get them all.
“No. The temple only tells the
location of the first key. Wherever it is hidden, the location of the
next key will be revealed.”

They had ridden the
whole day without a single stop and night was already falling. Alex
was half-asleep on his horse and Jonathan looked extremely tired too.
“We should stop, O'Connell.
Nefertiri will have to sleep too. She may be a princess of old, but
she is still only human.”
Nodding his agreement,
Rick began looking for a place to spend the night.
Finally they settled in
the valley between two sand dunes, building up a small fire and their
tents. It didn't take long for Jonathan and Alex to fall asleep, but
Rick just couldn't find the peace of mind required for sleeping.
His thoughts were
endlessly swirling about the subject of Evy and Nefertiri. He didn't
believe that his beloved wife was gone. 'She's there. She has to be.
And I'll get her back.' And yet deep in his heart something had died
over the last weeks. Evy, or Nefertiri, Rick corrected himself had
been cold towards him in actions and words and somehow his picture of
his wife had changed. Whenever he thought of her now, he didn't see
images of her laughing with him or digging in an old tomb. No. He saw
the moment she held the dagger to his throat and looked at him. Her
eyes had been cold then.
Shaking his head, Rick
went to the tent's entry to get some fresh air. Although the night
had brought a slight chill outside, the air in the tent was warm and
sticky. And besides that Jonathan was snoring loudly. As he looked
out of the tent flap, Rick saw something that took his breath away.
Ardeth had taken off
his light day robe to put on a warmer one to protect him against the
cool night air. He had agreed to take the first watch for the night
and to wake Rick later. As he had his back turned towards the tent,
he was completely unaware of Rick's gaze sliding over his back.
Rick was enraptured by
the intricate designs that adorned Ardeth's shoulder blades. He was
certain, that they had some meaning, although he didn't understand
the delicate ink lines. The Med-jai's body was illuminated by the
firelight and when he moved to put the robe over his shoulders, Rick
could see the strong muscles rippling under the skin.
But as the cloth
covered Ardeth's form fully, Rick shook out of his momentary
enthrallment and stepped out of the tent. Ardeth turned around facing
him as he heard the rustling of the tent flap.
“What are you doing out here?”
“I couldn't sleep. I'll take
over the watch, you can go in and take a nap. We should leave early,
Nefertiri's already ahead of us.”
“Yes, but she doesn't know the
desert. That is our advantage.”
“One can only hope.”
“Good night, my friend.”

Rick sat down at the
fire after Ardeth had gone inside. He wondered about his earlier
thoughts, because he had never felt an attraction to the Med-jai
warrior before. On the other hand, he never had gotten a real good
look at him before either. Although being married to Evy, Rick had
always taken the freedom to admire a beautiful body, male and female
alike. Just as long as his wife was there he had never felt the need
to sample, what was on display.
But now he found
himself wondering. It had been years since he had a tryst with a man.
Actually ever since the day it had landed him in Cairo's prison,
resulting in his adventure at Hamunaptra. Thinking back to former
adventures, he realized, why he had never seen Ardeth's
attractiveness before. He simply hadn't looked.
At Hamunaptra they had
been enemies at first and as stupid as he may have acted at times, he
never considered enemies as bed partners. And later on, he had been
too concerned for Evy to notice they Med-jai. When he admitted the
truth to himself, he hadn't thought about Ardeth at all, until he
showed up at his house, when Evy was kidnapped. But then he had been
concerned for his son.
Rick shook his head.
'Doesn't matter at all. We'll stop Nefertiri and save Evy and
everything will be like it was before.' But if he would have been
true to himself, he would have realized, that he didn't really
believe this.

They set out again as
soon as the first sun rays peeked over the horizon. Rick still felt
tired, although he had slept. He had dreamed and was absolutely
unhappy with the subject of this dream. It had been a very strange
and terrifying dream at that. He had stood on a cliff with a rope in
each hand. The ends of the ropes had been hanging over the edge and
on one rope Evy had hung and Ardeth on the other. He had known, that
to save one, he would have to let go of the other rope. And he hadn't
been able to figure out which one to let go.
Now in the bright light
of day it seemed obvious to him, that he would have saved his wife,
but a small voice was still nagging at the back of his mind, telling
him otherwise. He was scolding his own foolishness, when Ardeth's
voice shook him out of his thoughts.
“O'Connell, if we keep up this
pace, we can reach the temple at noon.”
“Good.”
Alex was as quiet as he
had been before and even Jonathan wasn't in the mood for much
talking. When they arrived at the temple they were in a bleary mood.
The temple itself was a
simple building resembling a pyramid and almost completely covered in
a large sand dune, but the entrance was free. As there was no sign of
Nefertiri they went inside. In sharp contrast to the simple exterior,
the insides of the temple were richly adorned with statues, columns
and wall paintings. They followed a long hallway into a huge chamber,
that was strangely empty, but richly decorated with pictures of the
goddess Maat.
“Look over there, that door
has to lead to the mirror. Jonathan, Alex, you stay here.”
Rick had already turned
away to follow Ardeth in the direction of the door, when he looked
back again.
“And don't touch anything.”
Creeping through the
door carefully, Rick and Ardeth edged along another hallway. It was
plainer, than the other one and didn't look like it would lead them
to anything valuable.
“I'm still not clear on how
this is supposed to work. The mirror shows you what your heart
desires and then...?”
“If the incantation, that is
in Isis's book is spoken, while you look into the mirror, the wish
becomes reality. And as Nefertiri wishes to change the world, we have
to stop her.”
Before Rick could
answer to that, they had arrived at a small chamber. In the middle of
the room sat a stone altar with the mirror laying on top. The walls
of the chamber were covered in hieroglyphics and Ardeth immediately
tried to find out if the location of the key was somewhere amongst
them. He didn't feel a need to look into the mirror as he was sure,
what he would be seeing. But Rick, feeling in an emotionally confused
state, couldn't resist to take a peak.

At the same time
Jonathan was ogling the gold adornments of the statues, while Alex
felt drawn to the mosaic, the two of them were standing on. Crouching
down, he took a closer look, trying to see, what was so odd about it.
Wanting to examine it closer, he slid his fingers over the surface.
Suddenly one of the
inlaid rubies gave way and sunk into the ground.
