Chapter 3 - Short-cut to misery
The sun, which was
brightly shining right into his face woke Brian up. He hadn't driven
far the night before and because he was using small roads he didn't
think that anybody would find him. So the blond had found himself a
parking spot just outside of L.A. and had tried to catch a few hours
of sleep.
'Shit, it's already
ten. I shouldn't have slept so long. Damn dreams.' His real problem
was that he had found it extremely difficult to calm down enough to
sleep the evening before. He felt guilty for leaving his job behind
and hurting Mia and Dom. Well, having erotic dreams about Dom didn't
help much either. Turning the radio on he listened for the news,
trying to determine whether Tanner was already looking for him. ' He
should have gotten my letter by now. Better stay off the main roads.
Bilkins will be mad as hell.' Thinking that not only Bilkins and
Tanner would most likely want to rip his head off, but Dom as well,
he sighed and pulled a map out of his trunk.
'Question is where do I head now? Some planning would really have
been a neat idea.' Brooding over the map he found a small deserted
road that went almost parallel to the highway and was most likely not
frequented much. 'Perfect. Finally that crappy day is looking up.'
Finally knowing what he would do, Brian pulled out of the parking
lot and drove the few miles out to where the deserted road began.
Turning up the radio he began to really enjoy his ride, because the
day in itself was sunny and warm, without being overly hot. As long
as he didn't think to much about what he left behind, Brian felt
almost insanely happy to just be in his car and drive without knowing
where he would end up. He had saved some money so he would be okay
for a couple of months and he could always find himself a garage to
work at. From the road he was using he was able to see the highway
and the occasional car driving by.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
100... 120... 140...Dom didn't really pay attention to how fast he
was driving down the highway as he tried to clear his head. Somehow
everything just didn't make sense any more. Brian was a cop and a
liar, but if everything was just a lie, why did he warn them? Did he
care? And if yes, about whom? These and other questions were creating
an endless loop in Dom's head, that he simply could not figure out.
Everything was suddenly so complicated. “ Nah, that's not
really true. “ Dom muttered to himself, while driving past a
large truck. Ever since Brian had shown up that first day things were
going rapidly mad.
' I' ve always liked women. Never looked at men like that and
now... nah wrong again, not guys in general, just Brian...with that
damn cocky attitude and fuck-it-all grin.' Dom's thoughts were
swirling around the same old issue again. It's not that he had never
fucked a guy before. It didn't really matter in prison. But now the
situation was completely different. If he wanted to get a good fuck
he could always have Letty. ' But no, that just can't be fucking good
enough anymore.'
Dom had already driven quite a bit and so he decided to stop for a
while. Getting out of his car, what surprised him the most was that
he somehow didn't feel anger at all. When he went out of his house he
had been furious and would have probably beaten Brian to a pulp had
he met him then. But now his rage had simply vanished as if it had
never existed. All he felt now was lonely. He had told Brian that the
team didn't matter to him and to some extent that was the truth. Dom
cared about them like siblings, but having to put up with their shit
was making him weary sometimes. Brian had been really refreshing. Not
looking for his guidance all the time. That was something Dom had
appreciated, because it happened so seldomly.
' I should go back and tell the team. It's time we move on to
Baja.' And still he couldn't help the emptiness he felt at that
thought.
' Damn it.' Brian was kicking the left front tire of his car.
'Just what I need. A flap tire in the middle of nowhere.' Sometime
during the last 30 minutes of his ride he must have driven over some
shards of glass, because there was a huge gash in the tire. Rummaging
through his trunk he tried to find an exchange wheel and was able to
locate it under some old blankets. As he locked it over he realized
that it was not in the best of shapes. Luckily Brian remembered that
he crossed a larger road not to far back and he thought he'd seen a
gas station with garage there.
After quickly changing the tire, Brian turned his car around and
drove back the way he came, all the while hoping that he had been
right about the gas station.
He was right and found the gas station to not only had a garage,
but also a small café. Hearing his stomach grumble he decided
that having a bit of breakfast first wasn't such a bad idea and
wouldn't delay him much. Brian found himself a secluded corner booth
and ordered a ham sandwich and a cup of coffee. Although he was able
to see his car from his sitting space he couldn't overlook the whole
parking area, but he didn't pay much attention anyway.
Brian did neither see the police car driving onto the parking lot
nor the police officer checking up his car. If he had known that
Bilkins and Tanner were already waiting for him when he came out the
front door he'd most likely tried to make a run for it out of the
back entry. But as he was oblivious to these facts Brian was startled
to hear his name as he left the small restaurant.
“Hey, O'Connor.”
Turning round he groaned as he saw whom he had ran into. 'Great,
that's not what I had in mind. They look really pissed.'
When Dom returned the team was gathered in the kitchen and having
lunch. Upon his entrance Letty, who didn't look too happy at the
moment, scowled at him and asked:
“Where the hell have you been?”
“Out. Mia leave as alone I need to talk to the team.”
“Forget it. No way I'm gonna leave now. I know what this is
all about.”
Vowing to ask his sister later how she knows that, Dom took a
corona out of the fridge and sat down at the table. Mia had also
taken a seat and the whole team was gazing at him with worried faces,
because of the serious expression he was wearing.
“Look it' like that. We have to stop the hijacking, because
the FBI is after us and the truckers are arming themselves.”
“How do you know that?” Letty threw in.
“Brian.”
“And how would the buster know such things?” Vince was
looking like he already suspected how Dom would answer his question.
“He's a cop.”
A look of triumph spread over Vince face. Letty wore an expression
of pure outrage, while Leon and Jesse looked shocked but calm.
“I told you so, bro. Told you he was a fucking narc. Let's
find him and pretty his face up some. I'd really...”
“Just shut the fuck up, V. We won't do anything about him.
He's left town anyway.”
“ Fucking coward.” Vinces mumbled comment was barely
audible.
“And what now? Because some fucking cop tells you to stop
you gonna do it?” Letty's expression had changed into a strange
mixture of disbelief and anger.
“Yes, 'cause I don't need bullet holes anywhere. We'll lie
low for a while and then leave for Baja.”
“I don't believe it.” Letty stormed out of the door
and closed the door with a bang. Dom's eyes followed her retreating
back wearily. Then he said:” They have nothing on us, so we
stay away from the civics and the trucks.”
“Why do you believe the fucking cop? He's a damn narc and
betrayed you.” Vince hot-headedly threw in. For the first time
in the whole conversation Leon spoke up. “He's got a point, you
know Dom.”
“I believe Brian.”
As Mia said, “ Yeah, me too.”, Vince threw his chair
back and left, too.
“They'll eventually see sense, you know. Me and Jesse'll try
to calm V down.” Leon said after Vince had closed the door.
They left and Dom and Mia were alone in the kitchen. He wanted to
talk to Mia about Brian, but didn't know how to address the issue.
Finally he asked her how she knew about Brian being a cop.
“I got a letter too.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Brian had no idea how late it was. They had left him alone in an
empty interrogation room for what seemed hours to him. But that could
have also been his time sense that was off, because there was no
window in the room. He had decided, that if they didn't want to talk
to him now he could as well take a short nap. Propping his legs up on
the plain metal table he shifted his chair onto it's hind legs and
wriggled around to get comfortable. Having found a halfway bearable
position to sleep, Brian closed his eyes and drifted off.
But they didn't give him long before Bilkins and Tanner entered
the room. Being woken quite suddenly by the bang of the closing door,
Brian tried to gauge his situation by regarding his companion's
faces. While Bilkins' was mostly blank, Tanner's expression was a mix
somewhere between anger and regret. 'Mm, the regret part ain't too
bad. Could keep me out of some nasty situations.'
“What were you thinking O'Connor? You putsched the whole
deal.”
“Did you tell Toretto anything?”
“Do you know who is hijacking the trucks?”
“Does Toretto know you're an undercover cop?”
They went on and on, always repeating the same questions. Brian
answered not a single one, because he was afraid that anything he
would tell them would endanger Dom. So he simply kept his mouth shut
and hoped that he would get out of this without suffering major harm.
The longer he kept silent, the fiercer Bilkins' and Tanner's
questions became. The monotonous stream of ever the same questions
annoyed and bored Brian to no end, so he finally bit out: “I'm
not going to answer, so you can cut the crap off.”
Bilkins threw the files he had been studying on the table and
left. Tanner sighed and called for Muse to fetch him a coffee.
Without offering Brian one too, he sipped at his cup and looked at
his former model officer.
“ I know you want to stay loyal to Toretto, but you seem to
have forgotten where your real friends are. It's nothing but an
illusion Brian. You can't see past Toretto's sister and that could
cost you everything.”
' Funny, how everybody gets it wrong.' , but Brian didn't say his
thoughts out loud.
“ You don't seem to understand that the best you can hope
for is to spend the rest on your life on traffic patrol, but it's
also possible that you might lose your job and face charges in court.
What will happen now will be decided in an internal investigation.
Until that is finished you are suspended from duty and are under
house arrest.”
