Vanessa stayed put at her little post against the stern rails.
“Business?” She asked innocently, but with an air of confidence mixed in her tone as well. The man turned around with airs of importance and with an even more prominent look of annoyance on his face, as if Vanessa had asked a stupid question that he just absolutely should not be bothered with. So self- centered, he acted, like he was the only person on the God forsaken world that mattered. And so, Vanessa harrumphed in disgust. The man raised his eyebrows at her, opened his mouth to utter something unheard to Vanessa because before he was able to begin, she continued.
“Sir! Before I disclose to you any information at all, whatsoever, or be carted away to any office, I shall like to know exactly who you are and what this so called discussion you’re asking me away to pertains to”.
Vanessa was defiant, one of her father’s ultimate qualities. He had always taught her, regardless of how women stood in society, and no matter how many times she would be told to hold her tongue, that she shouldn’t. She should stand up for herself whenever possible, and exercise the same rights that any man had. A truly valuable lesson coming from a well placed Duke, certainly, as well placed men in this time period would likely be placed among the chauvinists and leaders of male supremacy . But her father was different, and not like all the other elders, and aristocrats, with how poorly or lowly they treated their wives, daughters, washerwomen, etc. She had a feeling, with how this Commodore didn’t exactly drag her by her hair, or curse obscenities at her, that maybe he was of that rare, gifted breed of good-hearted man as well. Rival countries, as different in ideals as they were like Britain and France were at the time, didn’t have to go without having great and respectable qualities in common. Vanessa, though young at 18, wasn’t naïve enough to think otherwise. She’d had her adventures and was somewhat world wise by now after all the hells and goodnesses that she’d experienced. She had been around, certainly. She knew some things.
Now it was SHE who turned away from the stern rails, this time it was HER with the air or importance and self-indulgent swagger. She faced the man, leaning her back against the rails, and stood defiantly, not moving a muscle to follow him, only her long, black curly hair, though a bit dusty, dirty, and lusterless, blowing and flowing delicately in the light sea breeze, as she crossed her arms stolidly against her chest. The only article upon her that moved just a little was the tensing of her jaw as the self-important man turned around with a rapid whirl, causing his affects upon his belt holster to jangle and clang a bit. The sword gave a little clink as it moved within the leather and iron sheath, and the pistol half protruding out, butt facing her made a little rustle itself, and all the brass buttons and buckles upon his person made a little symphony, all with that little turn. Vanessa gazed at him with an air of nervousness, but was sure her appearance didn’t betray her insides, as she kept firm grip behind her on the stern rails and kept eyes trained with the ponytail of the man’s white wig, and then once he faced her, her eyes met with his.
The man, tilting his head in confusion and then in a sense of gloating narcissism, flashed a nasty smirk at Vanessa at almost the exact moment he saw her stance. His eyes, unlike her own, Vanessa considered to herself, did betray him. In those eyes she thought, if even just for a second, flickered a slight sense of apprehension. Perhaps the notion of defiance, especially by that of a woman frightened him or slashed a bit of his ego temporarily, especially since it was in the presence of his men. Still, he straightened, and regained his strength, and the faint flicker of another emotion that Vanessa thought she saw, switched to a look of utter disdain and impatience. To her surprise, however, the man conceded to her request.
The man started out with a snicker, then began to speak, his tongue answering her inquiry with a sharp, snapping barrage of words. Vanessa almost had to tell him to pause, until, suddenly, he had finished and resumed glaring at her. She remembered the words, spoken seconds before, moments after he’d uttered them.
“Yes, very well”. He had said, with eloquence and an almost inhuman grace. “The name is Norrington. Commodore Norrington, of his Majesty’s Royal Navy, as I’ve just recently been promoted from Captain a few months ago, four months, to be exact, but that‘s a different subject entirely.”
Vanessa smiled faintly, yet evidently noticeably, at that statement from him. She had been right on her guess of his being a Commodore. This was of slight reassurance to her too, and she had to raise her smile a bit higher at the fact that those many years she had been away, she still had kept in her mind her father’s knowledge he had given her about the Navy. Her home’s Navy. Little tidbit as it was, it showed her, she really had never left home. Her propriety and what she had learned otherwise had stayed intact. Now all she had to do was be restored to Colognia, to her parents and everything else she had missed, and piece everything back together again.
The Commodore continued, frowning once again, the small smidgen of a smirk and the showings of pride upon his rank fading with the entrance of a frown upon his handsome features. His dark brows furrowed in a slight expression of disgust and his piercing light green hazel eyes, prism-like in their ability to show so many shades without ever deciding on just one, seemed to darken with the cloud that suddenly passed over the rising sun at the same moment.
“Pertaining to the matters I have called upon you to discuss with me, I would like to know the involvement you partook in last night’s hostilities against my flagship. I hardly think it’s a funny matter, let alone one that should not cause a smile to cross your lips.”
Vanessa gasped, her hands coming up with speed from the stern rails to her mouth, silencing her voice. Surprise and sorrow quickened the exit of the smile, which was innocent in context, even though the Commodore would never believe her if she tried to explain now. A long, drawn-out feeling of guilt and dread seeped through her veins, now, making her shiver even though the sea breeze was getting warmer as the sun continued rising.
