Chapter 27
-oOo- “Lock on with photon torpedoes,” Kirk called to Uhura as he stumbled out of the turbolift. “Are their shields still down?” “Yes, Captain,” Uhura said, surrendering the chair. “Our cloak is still functioning, and I've maneuvered us as close as possible.” “Thank you, Lieutenant.” Sulu and Chekov, though not in pristine condition, had both kept up with the Captain. They spilled into their chairs, displacing other crewmen. “Locked on,” said Sulu. “Mr. Chekov, head for the superlaser's exit ports.” Kirk was a little surprised to see Spock had followed them to the science station. He was joined by an indignant-looking Bones. “You need a neck fixed, you hobgoblin,” said McCoy. “You're lucky your head hasn't fallen off.” “I apologize Doctor McCoy, but my duty comes first.” Spock replied, his voice strained. Kirk blotted out the banter he knew so well. His eyes were fixed on the hull of the Nihilus, and he was beginning to sweat. Their remaining firepower wasn't going to be enough. “Dom Ardais?” he said to Dyan, who'd just joined them. “Inculcare must have another crewman operating the superlaser's backup systems. Can you find that man, take him over, and have him destroy the equipment?” “I'll try.” Dyan sounded much less brusque than he usually did. He took out his matrix and set to work. Kirk was clenching one fist tightly in the other. If Lord Ardais failed, then he'd really be down to his last resort. He switched on ship wide-frequency. “All remaining crew report immediately to the transporter room. Arm for guerilla warfare on the planet's surface, and evacuate at top speed. Mr. Kyle, start beaming them down the second they show up. An unknown quantity of Sith troopers are already on Darkover, and the ship's crew will be expected to help repel their assaults.” “Captain?” asked Spock. “We're stripping ourselves down to a skeleton crew. I'll expect you to lead the ground forces, Spock.” “Jim,” said Spock again, this time in a slightly different intonation. Kirk ignored him. “What are you up to?” McCoy asked. He too, had caught the strangeness in the Captain's tone. “You'll find out. Uhura, call Regis Hastur.” -oOo- Two minds crashed into their respective bodies. Danilo sighed wearily and sat down on a rock. “What do you intend?” “Something I'm very glad Domna Callina didn't ask me about, or she would have stopped me.” Regis' communicator chirped, and he looked at it in surprise, having forgotten about it. He fished it out. “Captain? Is that you?” “Yes. Dom Regis, we have bad news. Our initial mission to sabotage the superlaser has failed. We're still trying, however. I'm beaming down crew to help you fight the Sith on the planet. What's the situation? Where are the Jedi?” Bracing himself, Regis reported the destruction of the planetary shield, and the wounding of Catriona and the Jedi. “Our telepaths are trying to keep them alive, but we could use your help, both medical and military. Two Sith lords are still loose in the Forbidden City.” “Dom Regis, you must contact all the telepaths you can. Can your laran reach into outer space? Can you try to sabotage the Nihilus, or interfere with her in some way? If we fail, and I warn you there is a good possibility of that, you're going to lose Thendara. They're going to fire on the city in about fifteen minutes.” Regis and Danilo exchanged urgent looks. “We'll do everything we can, Captain,” said Regis. “Thank you. Kirk out.” “That's the voice of a man who thinks he won't survive,” said Danilo. “What is your plan?” Regis drew out the stone of Marius Hastur and stared at the lake. “Sicul Alton's main weapon was his Matrix of Hells, but our lore says he possessed a weapon still greater, namely the Matrix of Zandru. My ancestor launched a suicidal attack to prevent him from using it in the war.” He turned and faced his paxman. “Dani, I'm positive the Matrix of Zandru is the lake. Think about what the lake is. It's laran that's been stripped from thousands of minds, growing ever larger over the centuries. It's a giant trap matrix!” “All of it controlled by that chieri,” Danilo breathed. “Yes, it could be. Regis, are you thinking of trying to-- “Yes.” Danilo covered his face with a hand. “You're joking,” he said in disbelief. -oOo- “Jim, what are you planning?” Bones repeated. Kirk ignored him. He was watching Lord Ardais. Long moments passed, and Kirk kept his eyes on the chronometer. Finally, the Darkovan swore. “They've grown clever.” Dyan stared at the Captain. “The Sith has locked himself up with his droids. Droids are operating all his consoles, including the backup systems for the superlaser and shields. He's preparing to fire the superlaser. I have a little of the Aillard talent, but not enough to interfere with his machines at this distance.” “Thank you,” said Kirk briefly. “Thank you all. Everyone evacuate the bridge, and beam down to Darkover. Kyle, how far along are you?” “I've taken over the transporter, Captain,” replied Scotty. “Most are down by now. The crew is moving through very fast.” “Good.” “Jim?” exclaimed Bones. “Captain, what are your intentions?” said Spock. Dyan gave the Captain a narrow look. “I must take back my earlier assessment. You're not a boy playing at your station. I honor your decision.” He gave Kirk a brief bow. “I appreciate the comment, Dom Ardais.” “Dammit all, Jim,” said Bones. “You can't be thinking about what I think you are.” “Captain,” said Spock, “permission to stay.” “You're needed on Darkover, Spock. You know what it's like to lose a world. You have a duty to help these people keep theirs.” “I must bow to your logic, Captain, but in this case, emotions have their own reasoning. The Enterprise has become my second home after the destruction of Vulcan. If I must lose the Enterprise, I would prefer to go with the ship.” “Spock, don't argue,” said Kirk wearily. “All personnel leave the bridge and head for the planet. This is your duty as members of Starfleet. You're needed. You must hold off the Sith long enough for the Federation to send assistance to Darkover. Uhura, Chekov, Sulu, Dom Ardais, goodbye.” “Captain,” said Sulu. Kirk gave them a stern look. He let himself watch them, making eye contact with every dismayed face as his crew entered the turbolift. In two minutes, only Spock and McCoy were left standing on the bridge with the Captain. “Gentlemen,” said Kirk formally. “Screw you, Jim,” said Bones. “You can't compel me to do anything.” “Likewise, Captain.” “All right,” said Kirk slowly. “Bones, beam down Scotty when he's done. Spock, man the weapons console. I'll take over navigation. Fire everything we've got into the exit ports of the superlaser. Blast off hull plates, and chip your way down as deeply into the Nihilus as you can. She's well armored, so we may not get very far.” He gave them both a look. “Last call,” Kirk repeated. “No,” said Bones. “Your plan needs at least two persons on the bridge to be effective, Captain. It would be difficult to execute otherwise.” “All right. Gentlemen, we're going to ram.” -oOo- “I'm not.” Regis wore a resolute look. “The laran in the lake's been stripped of all personality, so it's not unstable the way living minds would be in a normal circle. I think that's how Zandru, or whoever he was, managed to control it. If so, I can control the lake too, with your help and this matrix.” Danilo gave his friend a sober look. “I never thought I'd risk death in a matrix circle, but I'll share the danger with you. Do you realize how much power we're going to be handling? Not even the ancients ever tried this. All that laran in the lake being channeled into a high-powered matrix, boosted with my Ardais gift, and then flowing into you as keeper? Regis, if we lose control--or more likely overload--that's it. Catriona's fate will be ours.” “Yes,” replied Regis firmly. “This is for Darkover, bredu. Catriona knew the risks, and so do we. She was brave enough to face the danger anyway. We can't do anything less.” Danilo gave him a look. “I—I'm glad we had that moment earlier.” He didn't say the rest of his thought. “So am I, bredhyu.” Regis hesitated. “Shall we start?” They joined hands and concentrated. Marius Hastur's matrix burned blue, then became too bright to look at. -This is the first step, thought Regis. The matrix is activated. It is difficult to hold, but not impossible. Ready?- -Ready. Look! The laran is being drawn towards us.- A grey cloud closed in. It covered them, swirling. -See,- thought Regis excitedly. -It's working! The laran isn't fighting us. I'm going to touch it.- -Regis, this much power-- -We need every bit of it, bredu. We're heading up. Climb with me.- -Do it quickly! This laran is like ten thousand screams to my ears, and it's growing louder. I don't know how much longer I can bear it.- Regis reached out, and linked with the pool. All the directionless voices cried at once. The pool exploded, washing over the two young men with a hurricane-like wind. -It's too much. Regis, I can't-- Danilo crumpled, clutching his head, overloading from psychic weight. Regis stayed upright, still guiding the energy to its destination. -A little more, bredu, a little more. Hang on, we're nearly there.- He could feel Danilo's consciousness fading, and strained upwards with all his might. He could see a ship. He could see hundreds of them. -oOo- The phantom of Inculcare stood on board the Nihilus, watching his viewscreens. “Prepare to fire,” he said to a droid. Dutifully, the droid programmed in the security code. “Set a countdown from ten.” -All those in the city will die?- whispered the Voice eagerly. -All? The Comyn, the Terranan, will be destroyed?- -Yes, all.- -Finally.- -oOo- Far below in the Forbidden City stood the living form of the High Inquisitor. Inculcare was using so much of the Voice's Force abilities to maintain his phantom that he had none left for other purposes. Such as, generating a Force barrier. Tyranus opened an eye. He'd been faking unconsciousness the whole time, watching for opportunities. He knew he'd lost his chance to control the expedition. Therefore, what was left for a Sith lord to do? Assuage his ego, of course. Though it wasn't possible to have everything he wanted, he could still gain something. Prolonged? No. Embarrassing? Only to Inculcare. But of galaxy-wide notoriety? Yes. With one brief, upwards flick of a blaster, he shot Inculcare in the face. The High Inquisitor let out a horrible scream, cut off in one fraction of a second. His face disintegrated as it was blown off. His body toppled slowly, falling forward in a heap. Over on his slab of melted pavement, Tyranus let out a death-rattle of a laugh, choking on his own burned lungs. -oOo- But even leaderless, Sith programming could not be undone. The countdown for the superlaser continued. Droids homed the weapon in on Thendara, tightening their focus. “Starting the run,” said Kirk. “Fire, Mr. Spock.” Spock sent wave after wave of photon torpedoes into the hull of their enemy, each plowing into the same spot. Though armored, the Nihilus shook under the blows. Spock continued until he'd shot the last torpedo. The barrage had put a crack in the Nihilus' hull. “Switch to phasers,” said Kirk. “Depress and keep 'em down. Make her hide white-hot.” The Nihilus was growing rapidly larger, closer. “Keep it steady on, Spock. We need to do as much damage as we can all the way up until-- Kirk faltered. “Jim?” “Yes, Spock?” “The Nihilus is-- “Oh shit, this is it.” The Nihilus was in their face, filling the entire viewscreen. Instantly, Kirk regretted his language. He didn't want these to be his last words. A moment later, he found the opportunity to say something else. The Nihilus turned brilliant blue as if struck with a thousand thunderbolts, and came apart. “All power forward shields!” Kirk shouted. The Enterprise rocked and shook in violent turbulence. Small explosions and cracks appeared as the ship blew through the explosive mass like a surfing wave. Both Spock and Kirk were flung from their chairs, and they heard McCoy's voice crying over the communications system, “What the hell? I thought it'd be one splat and then nothing.” Bangs and crashes struck the hull as though they were passing through a meteorite shower. The stresses were going to rip the Enterprise apart. Yet even as Kirk crawled back to his seat, he realized the explosion had expanded so rapidly the Enterprise was finding larger and larger empty spots to sail through. Immediately, he set to work on his navigation, looking for holes to angle for. In a matter of seconds, they shot out the other side of the cloud into empty space. They were surrounded by the leftover spacecraft of the fleet, but something strange was happening. A wave of blue energy was pulsing through space, and as it touched each ship, they popped open like corn kernels. The wave passed through the Enterprise with a chill that raised the hairs on Kirk's arms, but the starship stayed intact. “Spock, what the fuck?” “I presume that is a query, Captain. My sensors indicate that the Nihilus has come apart, and the enemy fleet is being, pardon me, Captain--has been--destroyed.” “This is, this is-- “I believe the term humans use is 'coitus interruptus,' Captain.” “That's not exactly what I meant.” Kirk tried to call Regis on the communicator, but only received a wall of static. “To the transporter room. We need to find out what the hell's going on.” -oOo-While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
