~~~~~ 2009 ~~~~~
Leon didn’t dawdle. He took the Cherokee over the northeast bridge out of the Narrows and into Gainsly in Midtown Gotham. We wanted off the island as quickly as possible. Gob sat in the front seat beside him, and I stayed in the back with Jack. Leon had been prepared. He’d flattened the backseat so Jack could lay down. Even if he’d been capable of sitting up he’d have to stay down to avoid detection. I laid beside him in the dark. "Is he alright?" Gob asked, wisely not looking back. He and Leon were both smart enough to act completely normal. Leon followed the speed limit and used his turn signals religiously. "He’s been tranquilized. It’ll wear off." I guessed. I tucked a blanket around him. It was cold in the back of the Cherokee. "Scarlet?" "I’m here." I told him, smoothing his hair back from his face. "What took you so long, beautiful?" I couldn’t stop myself. I leaned in to kiss him. His tongue met mine, and he groaned. "I got to you as fast as I could. Leon and Gob helped." "Where are we going?" He asked. "The old polo grounds. I have a few surprises set up for you." I told him. "My clothes..." "Gob got all your stuff from the storage locker." He groaned again and flexed his hands under the blanket. "Do you want some coffee or something? Maybe that will bring you around." "Here. Try this." Gob reached back a slim can of Red Bull without looking back. "What is it?" I asked him. "Boss loves ‘em. You never heard of energy drinks?" Gob replied with a snicker. "Yeah, I call it coffee, shithead." "Red Bull’s like coffee on speed." He explained. "Give it here, Scarlet." Jack reached for the can. I popped it open and handed it over. Just being out of Arkham seemed to be reviving him. He slurped noisily at the drink, and I watched him guzzle it. I’d always loved his neck, and, now he was a grown man, it was even more muscular. He finished the can in about two minutes, burped loudly and giggled. Gob passed me a second can without being asked. Jack drank it down, too, and shook his head back and forth like a wet dog. "That’s more like it." He sighed. "Better?" I asked. "Getting there... you cut your hair." He observed. "Oh... yeah, awhile ago. It’s easier to take care of." I said self-consciously. His hand reached up to stroke a lock of it. "No more cutting it." He instructed. ********** He didn’t remember the last time he’d been to the old polo grounds. They hadn’t changed much. By the time Leon brought the car to a halt, the Joker could sluggishly move. He was wide awake, but his body was having a hard time catching up. Scarlet was running the show, so he let her for now. She’d always been good at organizing things. The first thing he’d wanted was his weapons and clothes. Gob brought them to him. "It’s good to see you, Boss." The perpetually frowning kid was actually smiling. He seemed taller since the last time he’d seen him. "Are you taller?" "Yeah, a little." "Are you anorexic? Damn, Gob, eat a sandwich, huh? My men need all their strength." "Yeah, she made me eat earlier." Gob’s eyes flicked over to Scarlet. She was fiddling with a laptop computer and talking to Leon. Her bare legs gleamed white in the dappled moonlight, and he felt his cock stir. "Scarlet, come give me a hand." He demanded. She brought the computer with her. "Your surprise is ready when you are." She reported. The sound of an SUV coming to life distracted him. "Leon’s going to get your other surprise." "I do love surprises... first I want out of this jumpsuit." He pulled at the snap buttons. She took his clothes from Gob and watched him strip down completely nude. Her eyes danced over his naked body, and he snickered. "You act like you’ve never seen me this way before, Scarlet, and we both know that’s not true." "You look good... more scars." Her voice was tiny. "C’est la vie, Scarlet. Boxers?" He held out his hand. She handed over the orange silk boxers. Next, he slid his arms into the purple honeycomb print dress shirt and let her do the buttons up. Gob handed him his purple pin-striped trousers. Scarlet helped him hook the purple and green suspenders to the buttons on his waistband, and he knotted his own tie. Gob was affixing the hidden blades in his dusty black oxfords, so Scarlet gave him his multicolored socks. "You still look good in the dress, Scarlet, but we ought to modernize your wardrobe a little. You look like 1994." He teased, taking his shoes from Gob. "And I loved the boots back in the day, but you’ve got nice feet. I’d like to see more of them." She gave him his vest and turned down his shirt collar over his tie. "I was hoping you’d remember me better if I wore this." She explained. "It wasn’t the clothes. It was the cherries." He inhaled the scent of her. "I love cherries." He looked down into her eyes and saw how badly she still wanted him. "I thought you hated cherries, Boss. Remember when Anton brought some chocolate covered cherries to the warehouse? You slit his throat and filled it full of the cherries. It was hilarious." Gob snorted. "Hmm... maybe I do hate cherries, but I love Scarlet’s cherries." He leaned in and licked the crook of her neck to see if she tasted as sweet as she smelled. She swayed against him. "My, my, you have missed me, haven’t you, beautiful?" Gob interrupted again, unintentionally. "I got your jacket and coat all loaded up with your knives, Boss. Here’s your Cupid for your vest." The Joker rolled his eyes and took the switchblade. He slid the blade under his vest, leaving the second button from the top undone for easier access. "Alright, Scarlet. Let’s see this surprise you’ve got for me." He draped his overcoat across her shoulders and put on his suit jacket. He fastened his gold chain to the waist of his pants and decided the gloves and makeup could wait. He settled on the drop down door of the Jeep Cherokee and Scarlet sat beside him holding the laptop so they could both see. Gob sat beside her eating a candy bar. When she turned on the laptop its screen was displaying four pictures. The first was the front of the Brentwood Academy, and the second was the back of the school. The other two showed two old women tied back to back on office chairs. They were gagged and wired with sticks of dynamite. "Ooh, an early Christmas present! Refresh my memory, Scarlet. Who’re our lucky contestants?" They were vaguely familiar, but he’d never been very good with faces. "That’s our old guidance counselor, Mrs. Glenn. She sent the letter to my parents." She pointed at the tall, thin woman. He remembered the other one now. "Conseula, right?" "Yeah." "Good work, beautiful. Too bad there’s no popcorn." Gob tossed him a candy bar, and Scarlet made a phone call. "Showtime." She said. As they all stared at the screen, the room around the bound women burst into flames. "They used that flammable gel so it would burn better. That’s all the school’s current and archival records." She explained. She was trying to erase all traces of his past identity while getting revenge at the women who’d ruined their escape plans. "Smart cookie." He offered her a bite of candy. The two women were frantically trying to roll their chairs away from the fire, but the chairs were tied together. They each pulled in opposite directions, getting them exactly nowhere. Their useless struggles brought on a rush of giggles that erupted into cackles as the women simultaneously exploded into chunks. ********** When the dynamite blew we lost the live feed on the inside, but the outer cameras both caught the core of Brentwood crumbling in on itself. Jack’s gales of laughter were contagious, and I laughed even as I wired the other half of the money I owed Sergei and Trina to a bank in Bern, Switzerland. "Scarlet, that was simply classic. Did you see that, Gob? That was truly inspired work. Where’s Leon? He missed the show." Jack crowed. "He’s bringing the second act." I explained. "There’s more?" "If you’re up to it, yeah." "Bring it on, beautiful... Gob, you got anymore candy?" "I forgot about the pizza!" Gob brightened. Jack had always loved Gotham City Pizzeria’s cheese and pepperoni, and Gob had confirmed his tastes hadn’t changed. We’d picked one up on our way to the polo grounds, and Gob went to get it from the Prius. It was cold, but it was just as good that way. "How much did this escapade cost, Scarlet?" Jack asked with a mouthful of cheese and pepperoni. "I haven’t added it all up yet. I had to pay Leon, pay for the weapons, pay a couple to set up your surprises..." "Who’d you get?" "Russian couple, Sergei and Trina. They’re brother and sister." Jack nodded. "Oh, yeah, here’s the five hundred back from earlier." Gob said, handing over a wad of twenties. "You should just keep it. You did a good job." "Nope. I don’t want it. I already said I wouldn’t take money for getting the Boss out." "She didn’t pay you a dime, and you still helped?" Jack asked the boy. "I know, you said never do anything you’re good at for free, Boss. I just... When you got caught I did everything I could to get you out. I didn’t have all the resources I needed, and I couldn’t get anyone else to help." Gob explained. It was quick, but I caught Jack’s half smile. "Good work, Goblin. Here, eat some more. You look like a stick bug." Jack passed the rest of the pizza to Gob and found the makeup kit I’d made sure he had. "Wanna help, Scarlet?" He offered the kit to me. I stood between Jack’s spread legs and smoothed his hair back form his face. "This is the longest I’ve ever seen your hair." "How’s it look?" He scratched at his scalp and tousled it. "Curly. I like it, though." I said and opened the jar of white greasepaint. I drew a line of it across his forehead, down his nose, over both cheeks, above his upper lip and on his chin. He watched me intently as I blended it in to completely cover his face. "This is going to get on your clothes." "It’s already all over my clothes. It kinda goes with the look." He shrugged. I wiped my hands on a towel and opened the tube of black. He closed his eyes as I applied it liberally on his eyelids and up to his eyebrows. I used my fingertips to fill it out until his eyes looked like empty sockets in a skull. "Now my mouth, Scarlet. You can fix it, can’t you?" He asked.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
