A/N Goddess Foxfeather…yarrrrrrrrrr! (Piratey goodness,
lol). Readers/Reviewers: Ah, the
zombies will soon makes sense.
Ish. ;) THANK YOU!!!!!! *glomps *
Myrtle stared
out over the bow, holding back a string of the more interesting invectives she
had learned in her short time aboard pirate ships. “Are you done yet?” she asked between clenched teeth. “That hurts
like the devil!”
Anna Maria
quirked a smile, never breaking her concentration. “Should’ve stayed about the
Pearl, child. Wouldn’t ‘ve gotten
splinters in your arse on the Pearl.”
“It’s my
thigh, not my…my dignity,” Myrtle grumbled, standing as still as she could with
her trousers down around her knees. “Why
couldn’t we have done this in your cabin?”
“Light’s
better out here,” Anna Maria responded absently. “Last one…” A
particularly nasty splinter was just visible in the pale flesh of Myrtle’s
round thigh. “Hold still.”
“I am
holding…OW!” Myrtle’s eyes watered as the sharp jolt of pain shot through her
body. Anna Maria uttered a satisfied
‘heh’ and stood, slapping Myrtle on the rear instead of telling her to pull up
her trousers. “That was uncalled for.”
Anna Maria
shrugged and opened her hand, dropping the splinters over the side. “How’d it happen anyway, lass?” She lifted a brow. “Some fun with the crew on the table below deck?”
Myrtle
flushed hotly. “Hardly,” she
retorted. “I…I fell. On my derriere.” She jerked her chin in embarrassment, pushing an errant curl out
of her eyes. “I slipped in mop water.”
“I told ye
you were doin’ it wrong,” Anna Maria growled. She leaned against the railing
and regarded the younger woman with a curious eye. “You really have gold?”
“Yes,”
Myrtle sighed. “Enough for you and Jack
both. Gold out the ears.” She tied the
string on her trousers tightly and glanced towards the deck; the men had been
afraid enough of Anna Maria’s sharp orders to obey and not try to look, at
least not as far as Myrtle could tell.
“Why should
Jack be getting’ the coin, then?” Anna Maria asked in a lighter tone, pushing
away from the railing and heading towards mid-deck. “He ain’t helpin’ you none.”
Myrtle
shrugged helplessly even though Anna Maria could not see her. “Because he took me out of Port Royal. Because he helped me…and because I promised
him,” she added finally, shrugging again.
She felt a cold pang of guilt at how she left, sneaking away with Anna
Maria’s men, but she steeled herself against it as suddenly as it had
come. “But Jack is on the Pearl now and
none of my concern. What I need to
know, Captain,” she paused as Anna Maria turned to face her with a mildly
amused look on her face, “how far are you going to go to help me?”
“Pardon me?” Anna Maria tilted her head back to look up
at Myrtle, who was standing a step above her.
“This is my ship, girl, an’ don’t be forgettin’…”
Myrtle
rolled her eyes. “I know, I know. You didn’t have to let me come and you didn’t
have to do this but because I offered gold and a pirate does nothing for
nothing and all that.” She sighed. “Captain, I present my dilemma to you
thusly. When we return to Zoruba, one
of two things will happen. Richard finds
me or I find him. Either way…I must ask
that you do something for me.”
Anna Maria
became serious, all mockery and boredom gone.
The gravity of Myrtle’s tone was more effective than any profound words
could have been in alerting the captain to something of great importance
forthcoming. She cleared her throat quickly
and, seeking to keep the concern from her voice, said “Then I’ll be askin’ for
more gold.”
“Fine. A thousand more… What I need is for you to…oh,
Hell.” She saw the frantic waving of
the mate in the crow’s nest and a flurry of activity build on deck. She knew without seeing what they saw who
it was.
Anna Maria’s
head snapped around and she glowered. “Hard
to port!” she bellowed, storming towards her post.
Myrtle
cringed, grabbing for the nearest fixed object as the ship groaned and heaved,
sending her legs slipping from under her and her balance all to Hell. As they swung around, she could see the
Pearl through the darkening evening.
She had hoped Jack would not notice her missing for some time, maybe not
until she was in Zoruba, but she knew that had been stupid to wish for. She had insulted him, she thought, and he
was not going to stand for it. The idea
both excited and aggravated her as the ship regained a semblance of
steadiness. Myrtle uncurled her fingers
from the railing and made her way to the deck, dodging a running sailor. “Captain, what’re we doing?”
“We?” Anna Maria
snapped, reeling to face her. “You
wanted to be a pirate, girl, so be one!
Get away from me and get to your post!”
Myrtle
blinked, a thrill of excitement rushing through her. “Aye, Captain!”
