After a couple quick stops, including one at an ATM, Gob and I got to the old polo grounds. I handed him the five hundred dollars I’d just taken out. "You don’t have to pay me to help break the Boss out." "This is in case we get separated. You can get back to my house with that, or you can lay low if the cops catch any of us." I explained. "Cool." Leon passed out the guns. He’d already equipped them with the silencers. Gob handled the weapon as professionally as Leon. "I just point and pull the trigger, right?" I asked. "Try some practice shots. I got plenty of ammo." Leon suggested. Gob showed me how to release the safety, and he and Leon talked me through the first few shots. When I was fairly confident I wouldn’t shoot myself in the foot we moved to the two boosted cars. Leon had a dark colored Jeep Cherokee, and Gob had decided to ride with me in the maroon 2003 Monte Carlo. On the drive to the Narrows Gob and I went over the plan one more time. We would park the cars on opposite ends of Arkham and meet up behind the building. We’d break in through a basement window just as Jack and I had all those years ago. According to the blueprints it hadn’t changed in all that time, and I’d found their security system was archaic. The worm I’d planted in their system a few days earlier was doing a number on their security and their records, and it had yet to be detected. Once we got inside Gob would head to the storage lockers to retrieve Jack’s belongings. Leon and I would head to Jack’s cell. We’d try to use stealth, but our guns were there for a reason. I wasn’t squeamish about killing, I just didn’t want to leave dead bodies like a trail of bread crumbs to alert someone of the break in. If it did happen and the bridges to the Narrows were raised we had the boat as a back up plan, but I sure didn’t feel like taking a midnight swim in the Gotham River. Once we were off the island we’d head back to the old polo grounds. It all went according to plan until Leon and I found Jack so doped up he was nearly paralyzed. I’d almost panicked, but then Jack had called me Scarlet. He’d remembered me! My conviction was renewed. Leon carried Jack like a sack of potatoes over his shoulder, and I took point leading us out of Arkham. We’d run into no problems getting to Jack, but on the way out Leon and I had taken out two guards and an orderly. We moved quickly back to the very same file room where Jack and I had found a new use for the desk. Gob was waiting for us with his duffle bag full. He boosted it through the window first and scrambled after it. I kept watch on the door as Leon pushed and Gob pulled to get Jack out of the window. A second before his big feet cleared the window frame Leon grabbed him back. "What the fuck?" Gob asked. "Ankle monitor. Prob’ly has GPS." With a flick of a knife Leon had sliced it free. Gob finished pulling Jack free, and Leon turned to me. "If the monitor gets colder than 98.6 it’ll activate. It needs to be on someone. Go with the kid. I’ll catch up." He said. "No, I’m not strong enough to carry Jack. I’ll do it." I snatched the monitor and dashed back to the orderly’s body. I nestled the device against the skin of his belly. His ankles and other extremities would cool before the core of his torso, so we’d have more time before the monitor detected the discrepancy in body temperature. When I got back to the window Gob was waiting for me. With a strength I didn’t expect from such a scrawny kid, Gob hoisted me out of the window. As we ran to meet up with Leon in the Jeep Cherokee I thought of all the bodies buried under my feet. I wondered if Jack’s story had been true. If they really had buried all those people here their bones had just witnessed the Joker’s great escape. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
