Jack stood, abruptly, his chair screeching on the uneven floor,
placing his fists on the table and leaning towards her, looming as she remained
seated “so you’ll be telling me where Maia is then, and I’ll be telling my
crew.”
Tia said nothing just stared at him, then slowly began to smile, Jack felt the
hairs on the back of his neck start to rise.
“Tia?”
Still nothing the fool woman only sitting with her hands in her lap and
grinning like the cat that got the cream.
“Will you stop your smirking woman and give me a heading.”
“Jack…..” she smiled again and he suppressed a shiver “Jack Sparrow you do be
surprising me after all” she stood and swung around him running a long dirty
nail down his cheek and he sucked in a breath, trying to create distance
between them. Heaven knew what the woman had in store for him but Maia would be
free. Perhaps she would even think about coming and rescuing him, that would be
nice. A quick daydream and then he was back in the present.
“Well I know how you love surprises Tia but would you be thinking of upholding
your part of the agreement….location….Maia…you know the one, pretty girl,
magical wee thing, friend of yours I believe.”
“Now Jack” she held up her hand to stop the flow of words “tell me what you be
intending, don’t be expecting me to be knowing. Say dem words.”
He sighed a long gusty sigh “I stay here in this stinking swamp for eternity or
even longer doing your bidding, whatever that may be and I would be telling you
right now I am no cook, if you end up dead is not my fault at all. And in
exchange you let Maia go free.” He waved his arm towards the creek outside “you
give me the heading I go outside and shout it out to my men and they will go
and find her. Were those the words you were wanting Tia?”
“The words Jack, your freedom for the freedom of de Star of de Sea”
“I just said them”
“No” an expression of absolute patience on her face “you did be rambling on
like a man who be four days in de rum bottle” she reached out and tilted his chin,
looking into his eyes. “Say de words Jack Sparrow, Captain of de Black Pearl.
De words.”
“My freedom for Maia’s” he whispered, the room filled with the sound of his
breathing as he spoke the last “just tell me where she is…please.”
Tia watched him for another long moment and then clapped her hands sharply,
three times. “So be it” she lifted her skirts and swayed back to her heavy
chair. Hands wrapping around the collection of shells, coral and one lone crab
claw that lay on the maps, with deliberate slowness she raised them above her
head and then dropped the odd runes, scattering them across the table and
leaning close.
A smile creased across her face and dark eyes looked up at him “here be de Star
of the Sea”
“I will tell the men” squaring his shoulders, ready to shout down Gibbs, all of
them, trying to think of how to say it, as few words as possible so that they
could be on their way and he could begin his sentence.
“Jack. Wicked Jack” she had stood, unnoticed and now her hand was on his arm, gently
but it felt like chains and he resisted the urge to wrench it away, plenty of
time for them to be in hell together once he had the Pearl on the way to Maia.
“Listen to me, dis you be needing to hear”
“Forgive me Tia; I am sure that you and I will be having much time in which to
converse, years I would imagine. I need to give them the heading, tell them to
go, to find her.”
“Why would you be wanting to be telling dem, when you could be showing dem.?”
“I beg your pardon” he stopped, swinging to look at her.
“I do not be wanting your freedom Jack. Did you not be knowing me better” her
voice got low, angry “I cannot be abiding de slavery of one man by de other.”
“Why then” he walked towards her, his eyes angry “why did you ask that of me.”
“it was de rules Jack, Maia had to find her truth you had to be finding
something that was everything, something that was more than dat far horizon”
her eyes held his “you had to be finding de man dat you are, to become de man
that you will be.”
“So this speaking in riddles is your way of telling me it was a bloody test,
that you were testing me” his voice was getting louder, angrier.
“do not be shouting at me Jack, was not all of my doing, just as Maia’s task
was not of my arranging, there be powers that are greater than I, she be doing
their work not just mine.”
“So what does it mean then” one finger lifting before she spoke “without the
riddles”
“Dey be preparing you Jack for something dat I do not yet see.”
“Wonderful, absolutely bloody wonderful” he slammed one clenched fist into the
side of the shack, the building shook, clumps of dirt falling from the ceiling
“so this is not the end of it then.”
“I be sorry Jack but I be thinking not.”
“So I can go”
“Aye you can go”
He spun stalking to the door but before he could grasp the handle her voice
halted him “I be proud of you Jack Sparrow, you be a good man, I be hoping dat
you and Maia be finding your horizon.”
He stopped. Abruptly, mid swagger, hands freezing. Staring at the door before
slowly turning. He tilted his head, a slight bow, gracefully, no mockery this
time but recognition of her words.
“You are a confusing and tricky woman Tia but you have my thanks”
She nodded, her eyes softer than he had ever seen, “Go safely my Wicked Jack,
go find your Star of de Sea”
With a swirl of air he was gone, the door made of mismatched boards slamming
behind him. Tia Dalma walked to the window, rubbing the dirt and cobwebs away
with her blackened hand. Jack was running down the steps, she could hear him
shouting to the crew.
“Hurry, Hurry, we have a heading.”
She smiled, a slow secret smile and then stepped lightly as if to music only
she could hear, back to her chair, hands already gathering the runes, throwing
them once again across the ancient map that rested on the table top. Fingers
touching and tracing, smile becoming a frown as she read what lay before him, a
hand going to her mouth as one single tear splashed onto the parchment.
*
The Pearl ran before the wind, joyously, joyfully as if she was hearing and
responding to Jack’s urging for speed. He knew where she was, every moment they
were getting closer. The ring on his finger itching against the skin, that
heartbeat becoming more definite, his hand now throbbing with every beat,
intensifying with each hour.
”Maia I am coming.”
