Chapter Twenty Five - Ship to Shore
Once more they were hustled into a small boat, directed to sit side by side as
sullen men took the oars. The well dressed man was in another boat a ways ahead
of them. He did not look back, but stood his eyes fixed on the land. Bella
glanced over at Will one hand clutching the locket that once more hung around
her neck, he did not seem worried, he was also looking
at the shore. The longboat beached with a scraping sound and several armed men
rushed forward taking them by the arms. They were pushed up the beach, Bella
stumbling almost tripping and without thinking Will caught her arm to steady her.
At the sudden movement swords were instantly drawn.
“Easy mate” Will’s voice was flat as he looked at the man with the gleaming
blade.
“Move” the man gave Bella a hard shove “now” Will’s face hardened and he caught
Bella as she staggered pulling her against him.
“I think you should stop that mate.”
“Oh do you”
“Aye” Will had stopped walking; he still held one arm across Bella.
“And what will you be doing about it then?”
“Will it’s alright..” Bella was looking
nervously at the sharp sword in the other man’s hand.
“Ssh Bella” the words were whispered and his arm
tightened around her just slightly “he will not push you like that” she looked
at his eyes, the set of his mouth and was quiet.
The two men stared at each other for a long time until finally the pirate
dropped his eyes.
“Move” he snarled but there was no contact this time.
“Come on Bella” Will stepped forward and after a
moments hesitation Bella followed. Men were odd, but she felt warmed that Will
had felt that way, even though it had been unnecessary. She was trying to think
what Jack would have done when they crested the sand dunes. A carriage with
blacked out windows was waiting, a pair of black horses stamping in the hot
sun.
“Get in” there was no meeting of eyes now, the door was just flung open and
they climbed inside. It was cool and shady and Bella leaned back in the plush
seat. Will slid in to sit opposite her and the door was slammed behind him. The
carriage shifted as someone climbed up into the driver’s seat, they heard him
cluck to the horses and with a creak the wheels began to turn.
The road was rough, full of pot holes and they jolted about, Will was trying to
look out the window but after a few minutes gave a hiss of frustration and
leaned back against the seats.
Bella waited until he looked at her then leaned forward “I will never be able
to thank you Will for getting the locket returned” she touched his hand, once
just lightly and he smiled.
“I knew it was important to you…”
“Well thank you and thank you for before but you needn’t have worried it was
only a push…”
“I don’t like bullies” Will leaned forward the smile widening lighting up his
face as he shoved tangled hair back from his forehead “besides I could see that
you were going to kick him any moment..”
“I was not!”
“You were…you do this funny thing with your mouth and your eyes go all
squinty…then bam” Will smacked his fist into his palm and Bella jumped.
“How do you....I do not….alright I was thinking about punching him actually…but
only if he had pushed me again..”
Will laughed “Jack does that eye thing you know…he taught you how to fight
didn’t he?”
Bella nodded and Will grinned.
He was about to say something more when the carriage gave a jolt and the sounds
from the horses hooves changed, the road had gone from hard packed dirt to
cobblestones, and they could hear other horses trotting, voices, children
calling to one another, a woman shouting that she had fresh fish. They were in
a town.
“Do you think it is Havana?” Bella was now
trying to look out the window but she had as little success as Will. “they
don’t want us to know where they are taking us….that must be good mustn’t it…if
they were just going to kill us they would not care if we saw anything.”
“Possibly not” Will was cautious, slow to answer “we will have to be very
careful now Bella. I don’t know what they want from you but we need to try and
get them to keep us in the one spot for as long as possible. Give Jack time to
come up with a plan…”
She nodded, but her face was worried. “He wouldn’t just sail into the harbour would he…..shit he would…we have to escape Will or
Jack will sail in here and try and bluff his way to us.”
“Jack will have a plan Bella…don’t worry about Jack.” But Will was frowning
too.
Suddenly they slowed before turning hard right, the noise from the horses
hooves changed again, muffled now as if they were walking on wood. Then the
carriage stopped.
“Bella..” Will’s hand was on her arm “are you ready?”
She lifted her head, squaring her shoulders “I am”
“Good just follow my lead.”
“You sound just like Jack…” she opened her mouth again just as the door began
to swing outwards. Will gave it a sharp push almost knocking down the man who
stood on the other side. He seemed to be wearing some sort of livery, his nose
wrinkling in disgust at the filthy creatures in front of him. Will jumped,
ignoring the steps that were lowered to the ground and turned to offer a hand
to Bella. She looked at him as if he was mad, but took his hand, head high she
descended.
They were in a courtyard, in the centre of what seemed an average sized house.
On the lower levels appeared to be the living quarters, a dining room,
sprawling lounges and what looked like a library from what Bella could see of
the book filled shelves through a partially open door.
“I was told that there was only one” The man in livery seemed to be very upset
about something; his accent was English, very precise. “He said that there was
one…guest, I have only the one room.”
“Well put them in the one room then fool.” The richly dressed man from the boat
came out of one of the lounges, he had a glass in one hand, swirling the golden
liquid in it as he studied his prisoners.
“But the lady…”
“She is no lady, a pirate whore that is what she is. You will not be moving any
of my guests. Put them in the same room…immediately.” He turned away before
swinging back “and get them some hot water and a bath tub, they stink. Hot water and clean clothes. Tomorrow your master will be
coming to speak with the girl; you know that he cannot abide filth.”
The servant nodded “as you well know all our rooms have bathing facilities” his
face was sour and he looked daggers at the mans
departing back. Bella was sure that she heard him mutter pig under his breath,
but when she looked quickly at him his face was bland.
“Come with me” his voice was sharp and he gestured for Will and Bella to
follow. Will stood aside for Bella to go first; she hesitated then began to
walk up the stairs behind the man when Will wiggled his fingers at her. The
guards that had stood at the courtyard door followed them. There would be no
escaping, yet.
The room they were shown into was large. The ceilings stretched high above them
and it was filled with heavy wooden furniture. Bella was relieved to note that
there were several low divans, as well as the large four poster bed that seemed
to dominate the room. She had slept in close proximity to many men before
whilst sailing but the thought of sharing a bed with Will made her jumpy. She
needed to gather her wits together and stop acting like a ninny. A large screen
shielded one corner of the room.
“The bath” the mans voice was dry as he noticed where Bella was looking “I will
have water bought up immediately and fresh clothes….I will arrange to have your
garments washed, those that are able to be that is” his nose wrinkled again and
Bella resisted an urge to sniff at her sleeve.
“Excuse me” Will’s voice was polite and the man raised his head sharply.
“You are English?”
“I am, born in England sir.”
“I am just Jones…that is what they call me here.”
“William, or Will and this is Isabella.”

The Island of Cuba was a smudge on the
horizon, Jack checked his compass, it did not waver, where
ever they were they had been there for some hours now. He grinned beneath his
moustache. Norrington and his fleet sailed behind
him. If he had not been so worried about Bella and Will this would have been a
moment that he would have truly gloried in. As it was the crew
were staring at him with awe, he laughed at himself for being so
prideful, but he could not help but preen, only a little though. Not long now
and they would be sailing into La Habana. Not long
and he would have his sister and William back. Nothing could stop Captain Jack
Sparrow now.

There were now five ships in the sheltered cove, anchored close together, sails
furled, their crews tending to the canons, or checking
weapons on the scrubbed deck. Their Captains were men that were loyal, that had
sailed to assist when they had heard the quiet rumours,
men that now traded but they had once been soldiers. They had sailed together
many years before; they remembered a young man that had seemed destined for a
bright future.
They sat around one long map covered table listening to Martinez as he reported what
his spy’s had learnt. Soon they would make their move. Until then they had time
to talk, to reminisce, to remember the dead.
