~~~~~ 1994 ~~~~~
After we’d picked up tacos, Jack had driven us to the old polo grounds. He’d tossed his backpack in the backseat when he got in, and now he dug into it. He’d brought a six pack of Crystal Pepsi, a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos and a bag of gummy bears. I’d never been much for snacking. Jack used to tease me for eating like a bird, but lately that had changed. He’d always eaten like a horse, and he accused me of trying to keep up with him. He handed me one of the clear Crystal Pepsis, and I handed him a taco with hot sauce. While we ate we discussed what the detectives had asked us and what we’d told them. "The detective asked me if I went to the library or the cafeteria after Dean Ringholtz told me to go inside. I told him neither. The dude got all interested..." Jack snickered, "... ‘Where did you go, Mr. Napier?’ I told him I went to the bathroom to beat off!" He cackled and chunks of chewed up taco shell hit the dash. "He goes, ‘Why in the hell would you do that, son?’ I said ‘Have you seen my girlfriend? We got interrupted, and I didn’t want blue balls!’ He totally bought it." Jack recounted what he’d said. "It was so easy to fool them. I can’t believe anyone ever gets caught." I shook my head. "Most people are dumber even than the cops. It makes the cops lazy. Oh, here... your gift." He handed me a plastic bag from the Coconuts Music Store. I tore into it and found a CD of the original motion picture soundtrack to The Crow. I literally bounced in my seat with anticipation. I’d been obsessed with anything related to The Crow. Jack and I had went back to see it four more times, and I’d bought posters, graphic novels, books, pins, patches, necklaces, key chains... anything with The Crow on it. "Thank you, thank you, thank you!" I kissed his cheek as he used his knife to cut through the cellophane packaging. "You’re welcome, beautiful. I had them order the original score by Graeme Revell. That ought to complete your collection, right? I already got you the complete trading card set." He popped the disk into the player and cranked the volume up as ‘Burn’ by The Cure started. "Come on, let’s lay out on the blanket." I suggested, tugging on his arm. Now that it was warmer outside we’d given up on trying to have sex in the Jeeplette. It was obviously possible, but I loved the feel of the sun shining on my bare skin. ********** Scarlet sure loved The Crow. Every time he brought her a new poster, t-shirt or coffee mug she showed her appreciation in the nicest of ways. He was laying on his back on the blanket, and her nude body was pressed to his side. Her red hair was tumbled across his chest, and her soft breathing was stirring his chest hair, tickling him. "Can I tell you a secret, Jack?" She broke the silence after a few minutes. "You can tell me anything. You know that." He stroked her shoulder and played with her hair. "My moon clock stopped." Her words were so softly spoken he almost didn’t hear her. "I thought you had a digital clock." "Not that kind of clock, Jack... my cycles... my period." "I don’t care if you’re on your period, Scarlet. A little bit of blood doesn’t bother me." "No, Jack, that’s the thing. I stopped having periods. I took a test... three of them actually." The meaning of her words was starting to sink in and make sense, but he was too shocked to say anything. "They all said positive. I’m gonna have a baby. We are. You and me." She clarified. All her nausea and fatigue made sense now, as did her new found appetite. He didn’t know what to say. "Are you okay?" The words tumbled from his mouth before he’d known it. "Physically? Yeah, I think so. I haven’t been to a doctor or anything. I don’t know what I’m going to do when my parents find out. I was thinking I could go to the free clinic. My parents wouldn’t even have to know." "You mean an abortion?" He didn’t know why the idea of aborting the baby upset him so much, but it did. "No! Of course not!" She sat up. "I want this baby more than I’ve ever wanted anything. I just meant if I go to the free clinic they can’t tell our parents, and I wouldn’t have to use my parents’ health insurance." She explained. "That’s smart, Scarlet. It’ll give me some time." "Time for what?" "To skim some money from some of my father’s shell accounts. You know if your parents find out they’ll make you give up the baby. They hate my guts. Once I get enough money we’ll take off. You know how easy it would be to disappear in a city as big as Gotham? We can get our own place, do what we want to do." He could get a job working hits for one of the mobs, and Scarlet could stay home to take care of the baby. "Do you really think we could do it, Jack?" She looked so hopeful it made him even more adamant. "You heard Monsieur Harlan, rules seldom make sense. We can’t go by their rules, Scarlet. The only way we can make it is if we see the only sensible way to live in this world is without rules." He told her. Her eyes dazzled at his words. "What can I do to help? I mean, my parents have shell funds, too. I can maybe get the account numbers." She volunteered. "That’s good, but mostly I just need you to make sure no one finds out. It could take a couple months to siphon off enough to set us up for awhile. Leave all that to me, beautiful."While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
