-Chapter Twenty Three-
It had been decided by Jack that Raven's cooling off period within the brig would last for one whole day, as well as keeping her in complete isolation, meaning no-one was to visit her. The only time that she got to see anyone during her confinement was when Jack personally went down in order to hand over the meagre rations of bread and water.
Some crew were curious and went close to the entrance to the brig, but didn't go in. It was no surprising that there was some attention drawn to the area being as the time didn't dwell well on her.
Throughout her time in there her mood shifted, one moment she was calm and collected while the next she would turn violent, slamming herself up against the bars of the cell in an attempt to escape, whilst yelling abuse in case anyone was in hearing distance. A wooden bench that was supposed to a sort of bed had been overturned and kicked at, one leg had enough pressure placed against it that it had been snapped off.
There had been numerous times when members of the crew had to be shooed from the area. Even Jack himself had listened into the mad womans rantings, but had to force himself not to go down there in order to tell her to shut the hell up.
It was now on the twenty fourth hour and all was quiet within the brig. Jack cautiously made his way down there, accompanied by Gibbs and a couple other crew members just to be on the safe side.
Raven was laying upon the cells floor, staring aimlessly at the ceiling, her breathing slow and shallow. She hadn't slept at all during her time in the brig, though now after all the violent bursts her energy was drained. She hadn't touch her rations at all, in fact the mug which had held the water had been hurled through the bars and was laying on the floor further up the brig, a damp trail upon the wood showing how it had been thrown.
She heard the approaching footsteps but didn't move, in fact she didn't even look over in the direction. She just continued to look up at the cell ceiling.
"You calm now Raven?" Jack's voice rang out.
Raven however didn't reply, she just maintained her silence.
Frowning Jack glanced at Gibbs then shrugged his shoulders. If this was the way she was going to be, then so be it.
"I'm goin' to let ye out. But understand this, you step one foot out of line and you'll be findin' yourself back 'ere quicker than you can say 'Tortuga', savvy?"
Raven now let her gaze flicker over towards the group of males, though she didn't say anything. Jack took the glance to be a yes, and took out a bundle of keys. He rummaged through them until he selected the right one and slid it into the lock. With a click the cell was unlock, the door pulled open. He took a few steps back just to be on the safe side.
Raven however just pulled herself silently to her feet, not making any eye contact as she moved through the now open cell. She slipped by the small group, albeit slowly and went above deck.
"Well. Tha' went well." Jack spoke in an optimistic tone.
"For now Captain. For now." Came Gibbs rough opinion.

It was the staring that Raven found was getting to her. When she had her episodes on her own ship her crew avoided all eye contact afterwards. This wasn't her ship though, and this wasn't her crew. She didn't have a ship any more and her crew were mostly deceased.
She raked a hand through her knotted hair and shifted to the side of the ship, taking her gaze out to sea. Even though she was still able to feel the glances upon her, she now couldn't see them upon her. In time she would be able to build up her defences in order to ignore the looks.
Half the problem was that she was exhausted, having deprived herself of sleep had it's consequences. Part of her still wanted to scream out, but she bit it back, instead bringing her hands into fists, letting her half bitten nails cut into her palms. The small amount of pain she felt gave her some control over herself, even giving her relief.
"C-captain?" A timid voice came from behind her, a voice which was wavering. Despite that she knew it well.
"Aye Robert." She spoke, finally breaking the silence that she had been keeping.
"I was ...... I was wonderin', I-I mean...." The young boy started, though having difficulty getting out what he actually wanted to say.
The exhaustion that Raven felt brought about her impatience, quicker than it normally would.
"Spit it out boy!" She snapped at him, barely feeling an ounce of satisfaction as Robert visibly flinched.
"When this is over I want to stay 'ere." Robert stated quickly then squeezed his eyes shut, not wanting to see what she was going to do.
Stunned was the best way to describe her reaction. She couldn't even bring herself to speak for a moment. Instead she just brought a hand to her forehead then pinched at the bridge of her nose.
"You want to wha'?" She spoke quietly at first, then repeated it, her voice gaining in volume. "You want to wha'?!"
The yell caught Jacks attention from his spot on the helm, the first thing that came to mind was that Raven was about to start up again.
"You with me." He stated to the nearest crewman, pointing at the male and then over to where Raven stood with Robert.
It looked like it could possibly get ugly as Raven grabbed hold of the young boys shoulders and shook him. "Why you want to do tha'?" She spoke down lowly at him.
Jack was just getting close when he realised that he wasn't the only one that was about to intervene. Malone swiftly darted over as quickly as possible and pulled the woman away.
"That's enough. Leave 'im alone. 'e's just a lad, you know tha'." Malone was saying to her firmly when Jack got close enough.
Robert was smart enough to get himself out the way, and shifted himself behind Jack, as though using him for cover.
"He wants to stay 'ere!" Raven stated jerking herself out of Malones grasp, while vaguely trying to give some reason for her action.
"Then ye wonder why, right lass?" Jack remarked, gaining a glare from her.
"This is nothin' to do with you Sparrow." She spoke through gritted teeth.
In a way it amazed Jack how much her mood swung about. One moment she was a fairly decent and calm commanding woman, the next she was the seductress, then there was this one, the aggressor.
"My ship, my business." He answered with ease. "If the lad wishes it, then he can remain. I'll be glad when I can finally get rid of you." He added, reaching to where Robert was just peeking out around him, and placed his hand upon his shoulder.
This seemed to halt any ranting that Raven had in mind, with that she stalked off towards the back of the ship. Perhaps she recalled that she would end up in the brig again. That explanation seemed the likely one, so Jack stuck with it.
"Thank you Captain Sparrow..." Robert glanced up to Jack with a boyish smile.
"No problem lad."

The calm warm weather that had been experienced during the most of the voyage was changing. The waves on the ocean surface became harsher, harsh enough that they rocked the ship. The clouds over head darkened, and before long there came a rumbling from the distance.
By the time the rain hit the ship Jack had already in advanced steadied the ship ready for the storm. His years at sea had long since given him the forewarnings of when a storm was due.
He currently stood at the helm, his hands holding the wheel firmly. He watched as a few crew members darted on the deck, trying not to fall over as water sloshed up onto it. Storms and ships really didn't go all that well together. Crew members were more likely to be lost during bad weather.
Raven was also on deck, holding onto the side as the waves came up and over. She had gone back to her silent ways after the incident with Robert, even going as far as to keeping her distance from all the crew.
Jack almost wished he knew what was going through that head of hers. He imagined that she was filled resentment towards him, since he stated in not so many words that he wanted her off his ship.
His gaze went back over to watch over the ship, hearing a crack of thunder over head, while rain water hammered down onto all above deck. One movement caught his gaze, the young boy trying to make his way across deck for some unknown reason.
"Get below deck Robert!" He barked out, only just being heard over the rain.
The order jerked Raven out of looking over the stormy mess of the sea, making her look around seeing where the boy was.
He was running awkwardly across the deck, when the order being yelled at him made him stop. The ship lurched to the side violently sending the boy sailing towards the edge of the ship. A clash of a wave coming up at the same time sent him toppling onto the deck. Being a relatively small boy there was a shriek as he was washed through a gap in the railings.
"Man overboard!" A call came from one of the crew that had been nearby, though since he had been too far away to do anything about it, he hadn't been able to help.
Locking the helm into place Jack made his way quickly to look over the side, and along to where the young boy had been swept out. Raven also came up to where Jack was, though he didn't realise that she had removed her hat and was pulling off her coat. That was until she was climbing into the side, using ropes to keep her in place.
"Get down from there!" He shouted at her over the sound of crashing waves.
"I'm not losin' 'im again!" She yelled back, releasing her hold on the rope before making a dive down into the murkiness below.
Jack cursed under his breath barely hearing the splash of her going into the sea. She just had to pull off a stupid dangerous stunt.
"Send a line down there!" He barked out the order to the crew, all the while trying to get some sort sight upon where the crazy female pirate had gone. The mess of the storm made it too hard to tell if the rippling below was being caused by a person or the storm itself.
The rope line was thrown out, being held by a few pirates that braced themselves so they too wouldn't be swept over the side. It seemed to dangle down for a while before they felt a tug upon it. They carefully pulled the rope up, feeling a weight on the end of it. As it got closer the weight was revealed to be Robert, the rope tied around just under his arms. The boy was mostly out of it, and by the time he was pulled onto the right side of the ship he was coughing up sea water.
Jack looked below into the sea once more to see what had happened to Raven. It was hard to tell, but was close to the ship was what appeared to be the outline of someone floating, just bobbing along on the surface. The surface of the water was starting to calm indicating that the storm was coming to a close.
Jack barked out an order for someone to be lowered down to retrieve the floating body. There was a chance that it wasn't even Raven, but it was at least worth a shot.
The crew member was sent down, a rope tied around his waist so he could be lowered easily. The few minutes that past seemed to be never ending, but eventually they came back up, holding onto a dark form.
It was Raven indeed, but she wasn't awake. She was fully soaked through, her hair clinging to her face and scalp, her eyes fully closed, her lips an off colour. A quick examination of her proved that she wasn't breathing.
A few crew dragged her form to safety, pulling her to an area where at least not all eyes could be placed on her. Gibbs scrambled over to the area and crouched down by her. He glanced briefly over to Jack who was overseeing the situation, then raised a hand in order to hit it against her chest. It was a long shot, but the move did on occasion help a drowning victim.
There were a few hits made to her chest, each one resulting in an audible thump. Jack worked his jaw, and was about to tell Gibbs to stop when he heard and saw Raven take an awkward breath. Her eyes partly opened and she shifted onto her side as sea water started spilling from her lips.
The crew that had been surrounding her eased back to give the woman some space. She coughed harshly for a while before slumping to her back. This time she was just on the verge of passing out from feeling weak with exhaustion. Just as her eyes slipped shut once more a name was murmured so quietly that it was barely heard.
"Robert....."
