“What I don’t be understanding is why ye don’t just be getting a
heading from that there compass?”
Jack sighed “Mr Gibbs do I look like an idiot? Do you honestly think I have not
tried that?”
He had many times and every time it had spun in circles only to point directly
back at himself, at his heart. He had grown tired of trying to reason what that
had meant, in the most poetic sense he understood, that she was in his heart
but that was of no navigational use to him so what was the damn point. He had
long suspected that the compass had a romantic soul or whatever it was that
magical compass’s had and he had tried to reason with it quietly that being the
fool for love that it appeared to be that it would be most happy if it helped reunite
himself and Maia. No headway had been made there though, hence the sailing all
over the world searching for her and he had been sure that he and Gibbs had
discussed it before, several times.
“More likelihood of it helping us than the swamp woman” Gibbs shook his head
“Mother of God Jack how many times have we been up that stinking river. Never a
straight answer and she will stare at us and afore we know it we will be off
chasing will o the wisps again, mark my words”
Jack rolled his eyes and silently mimicked his first mate, ceasing abruptly
when said first mate spun to suspiciously stare at him.
He cleared his throat, abruptly “do you have a plan then Mr Gibbs” a
penetrating stare “I am all ears mate” and he cupped his hands behind his ears
wiggling them and waiting, an expression of intense interest on his face.
Gibbs stared at him for a long time then spat disgustedly into the ocean “do
you have a heading Captain?”
“Aye that I do” Jack raised his voice; shouting out orders as he strode along the
deck, coat billowing behind him. This time, this time a mantra that he said
over and over in his very soul.

The moss that hung from the twisted trees still dripped loudly as he mounted
the uneven stairs, as always the long boat moving out to wait in the centre of
the channel, the men looking still looking fearfully over their shoulders even
as they watched his every move. It did not matter how many times they came
here. This was not a place for men. Women ruled in this swamp. He made each
step loud, boots hitting the rotting stairs forcefully, Gibbs so close behind
him that he could feel his breath on his neck, she would know that it was him.
She always did. He was ready to bargain with Tia, but this time there were no
small valuable items tucked away in various pockets. The bargaining would not
be for baubles.
He raised his hand to knock at the uneven wooden door, his fist halting as her
voice drifted through the gaps in the walls of the shack.
“Jack Sparrow, so the wind has once again blown yer back to me.”
“Tia” he pushed the door open, and bowed with a flourish. A sense of déjà vu
enveloped him as the thick air stirred, swirling currents suddenly rattling the
bells that hung in the window, the glass jars that were suspended from the
ceiling began to sway, so that he had to weave his way through them. Not
flinching, not looking, uncaring of what or who was contained in that murky
glass.
Tia looked upon him with eyes that told him nothing. Eyes that gave away
nothing. The slight affection that had been there once before gone, she had
still not forgiven him for threatening her, a woman that could hold a grudge, a
dangerous woman. But Jack did not care.
“Tia Dalma” he swayed slightly, so he had had a touch more rum that perhaps was
normal but one needed fortification for meetings such as this. “Looking rather
splendid, is that a new dress?”
Her eyes bored into him, he shifted slightly and then squared his shoulders.
“What do you be wanting of me Jack Sparrow, I be busy”
He looked hard at her not blinking, “you know what I want of you, where is she,
where is Maia, the task is done.”
“Dat Jack Sparrow is for me to be knowing, tis of no concern of yours.” In a
rustle of skirts she turned away from him, stiffening in anger when he caught
her arm “take dem hands from me.”
But he did not let her free, instead turning her to face him, his scowl
matching hers.
“Or what Tia, you will curse me, you think that any geas that you could lay
upon me could be worse that what you already have?” he stopped abruptly
glancing over at Gibbs who leaned against the door, his first mate trying not
to look to long at anything his eyes skittering from corner to corner.
“Mr Gibbs I would be most grateful if you could be seeing you way to giving Tia
and I some privacy.”
Gibbs looked worried, relieved and then worried again; his desire to be outside
warring with his duty to make sure his Captain was safe.
Tia stared at him, forcing him to meet her eyes “Go you have nothing to be
fearing, I will not be turning dis man into a frog” her fingers twitched and
she gave a short laugh “dem be tempting thoughts though.”
Gibbs gave her a startled glance and then looked to Jack who made shooing
gestures with both hands “go go”
And he went, closing the door with fumbling haste.
“So Jack Sparrow, wicked Jack, what things would you be saying to Tia Dalma
that you would not be saying in front of others?”
She turned and sat in her big chair, spreading her skirts then gesturing to him
to sit.
He sat, looking at her, she was waiting, regal very much like a ragged queen
upon a battered throne and he felt like some petitioner, seeking her favour or
even mercy. He shrugged that thought away; he had no time for fanciful
thoughts.
“What do you want of me?”
“I of you?” she made a show of pressing a finger to her lips and studying him
“you be thinking that you have something dat I need do you Jack. Dat if you be
giving it to me den I will be handing your precious Star of de Sea back.”
She stood swaying around him to rest a hand on his shoulder, leaning close so
that her lips brushed against his ear “and what if I be saying dat I want you
Jack, like I have had you before. Before dat girl put her hands on your chest
and did be stealing your heart.”
He caught his breath, a ragged gasp, it would not be the first time but the
thought was abhorrent, not that Tia was, she was beautiful, sensual in a
dangerous way and but anything with her went always crossed, into places that
he had wished that he had never been. Dark places that made him dream dark
dreams. Dreams that had gone. Banished.
She was watching him, eyes cold and hard. Waiting.
“No Tia, ravishing though you are that time is past.”
A flicker of her eyes and a quick emotion shimmered in them and was gone; once
more her face was unreadable.
“Once you would have done everyting dat I wished for, once you would have been
afeared to have said nay.” And then she smiled but it was brittle “so Jack if I
was to be saying your freedom for Maia’s what would you be answering me.”
“My freedom”
“Aye” she turned in a swirl of skirts, picking up a jar of what looked like
dirt, running her hands over the lid “to remain tied to me forever so dat your
Star of de Sea may be free.”
He swallowed, and ran his hands over his face, the emerald ring scraping his
cheek. Slowly he lifted his head to look at Tia Dalma.
“So we have an accord?”
