Chapter Twenty Four - Encounters
Pounding footsteps woke Bella from a restles doze. The movement of the ship had changed; they
were no longer in deep waters. Will was standing, arms linked through the bars,
facing the darkened stairway. As Bella scrambled to her feet he turned, it was
too dark to see the expression on her face, but he could feel her eyes on him.
According to his calculations they had been shut in the cage for much longer
than it should have taken to sail to La Habana. The
days had dragged, after the thwarted attack the crew had stayed well away, so
they had paced and talked and slept, Bella had frequent nightmares, and more
than once he had got up to place a hand on her arm and to talk softly until she
had calmed. She had never woken, just tossed and turned, sometimes crying until
finally she would drift into a deeper sleep again.
The talking had not come easily; conversation had been stilted to begin with,
until Will had mentioned a book that he had read, a book that Jack had given to
Bella. Their thoughts had been poles apart and each had spent some time trying
to sway the other to their way of thinking, from there conversation had become
easier and easier. They had talked late into the night, of places that Will had
been, of places that Bella wanted to go, if they had not been locked up in an
iron cage, sleeping on the hard floor it would have been very pleasant, well at
least that is what Bella thought. She was unsure about Will, at times he seemed
very open, making her smile, other times she would look up and he would be
studying her, his eyes unreadable. She would look away then and soon the
conversation would resume.
Bella attempted to push her hair from her face, it was matted and tangled, the
leather tie that had bound her braid lost long ago. Will smiled at her,
reassuringly, she knew that he was attempting to make her less nervous, a week
ago that would have annoyed her but something had changed that night when the
pirates had come into the cell. Bella had found herself smiling more at Will,
thinking several times of how it had felt having his face pressed into her
hair, his arm draped across her body. She found herself watching him, his face,
his eyes while he explained something, so that he
would stop and ask her what was wrong.
Shouts, louder this time came from above and she strained to hear what they
were saying. Port she hoped though she was scared of what could lie ahead. They
were hungry, exhausted and filthy, food and fresh water had been scarce, visits
from the Captain had been frequent though, he kept asking questions, it seemed
that he too had no knowledge of why he had been sent after Bella.
“They will be coming for us soon.” Will’s voice was very soft and he turned his
head just slightly to look at her.
She nodded and he studied her face for a moment before he went back to watching
the stairs.
The ship was still moving when heavy boots tramped down the stairs. It was the
Captain with four of his men. He put one hand under his coat pulling out a
heavy key which he passed to one of the sailors.
“Unlock them and bring them up on deck”
The key turned with difficulty, the door squealing as it was pushed backwards.
Will did not move, he made a slight motion with one hand and Bella remained
standing behind him. The four men had to come into the cage to flank them,
meaty hands grabbed their arms.
“Move” one of them gave Will a shove and he stumbled
forwards, recovering and meeting the eye of the sailor that had shoved him. The
man mumbled something under his breath and looked away.
Bright sunlight seared their eyes as they stepped out onto the deck; Bella had
to blink once or twice as her eyes streamed in the unaccustomed glare. They
were sailing towards what could only be Cuba, but not a city, a
sheltered cove. She could make out figures on the shore, sunlight glinted off
steel and there were several small boats being pushed out into the waves.
“Throw out the anchor” the order was snapped out as the Captain stood watching
the vessels coming towards them, one hand resting lightly on his sword. He
turned to look at Will and Bella and his eyes narrowed.
“Get some water so that the wench can wash her face”
The air was full of tension as the first men clambered over the railings, there
were eighteen of them, big men who spread out facing the pirates, only one
waiting by the railing to offer assistance to a richly dressed man. He ignored
the hand and there was a sneer on his face as he looked around the ship, he was
also big, tall and heavy, black hair and moustache and glittering black eyes
that were cruel as they fixed on the captives.
“So you think that this is the girl” his words were jovial and the fawning
pirate captain nodded but the smile did not reach the man’s eyes as he marched
across the deck to stand in front of Bella.
“so you think that this is Isabella….she looks like a pirate whore to me…” a
thick hand pulled her hair back so that she was forced to look into his eyes,
“not the daughter of a …” there was a sharp intake of breath and her hair was
suddenly released as the man muttered something inaudible and started to cross
himself, then stopped aware that he was being observed.
“Well it seems that you are smarter than you look…that is her” he turned and
stamped back to the railings.
“Your Lordship…there is a matter of payment” the pirate Captain rushed forward,
his men leaned in as he placed one hand on the man’s arm.
The man knocked it away with a hiss “fool I am not your Lord, as if my master
would set foot on this disgusting vessel…but I see…you want your gold” the man
turned to and pointed at Will, he seemed to be trying to avoid looking at Bella
“you, did any of these scum harm the girl”
“No not in the way I assume you are implying…but a locket was stolen from her.”
Bella looked at him sharply and he moved just a little so that he gently
brushed his hand against hers. “Steady” the word was breathed rather than
spoken.
The man nodded staring at the Captain his eyes cold, “Get the girl back her
locket and then you will be paid” the words were flung over his shoulder as he
swung one leg over the railings.

“Bugger, bugger, bugger” Jack’s fist pounded into the wheel as the sails that
he had been watching on the horizon started to get closer. “What has happened
to my luck..” the words were groaned under his breath.
He knew the ships ahead of them, Bloody Norrington,
why could the man not just stay in Port Royal. Small consolation
that they were flying a friendly flag and there were no guns pointing at the Pearl but still Norrington was a Commodore and he Jack Sparrow was a
pirate, it was unnatural. Jack watched the other vessels, sailing closer, his
brow creased in annoyance, he did not have time for verbal sparring with Norrington, but if they did not halt then the Englishman
was liable to order his fleet to attack the Pearl, and he did not have time for
that either.
“Gibbs fly the same mate, we will see what the Commodore is wanting with Jack
Sparrow.”
A flag that mirrored the one flying from the English masts was hoisted. Jack
nodded in satisfaction as the other vessels slowed until just one ship sailed
to meet The Black Pearl. Soon they were within shouting distance, slowly now
the gap narrowed until they were side by side only metres
separating them. Jack handed the wheel to Anna Maria and stamped down the
stairs to stand opposite Commodore James Norrington.
“What are you wanting with me now Commodore, I have urgent business, this is
bloody inconvenient”
“Jack Sparrow…it seems that you have not been completely honest with me…you
recall our last meeting. I have in my possession information that suggests that
the young woman is alive, raised as your sister in fact. My superiors are most
anxious that I speak to the young lady…”
“well them and the rest of the world it seems” Jack muttered under his breath
before leaning over the rails and shouting “well you can’t Norrington
as the bloody Spanish have got her…”
“So you have lost your sister…rather careless of you.”
Jack grunted sourly “well if you have finished being clever, I need to get
about the business of getting her and Turner back”
“You lost William Turner as well….most careless indeed, and you plan on getting
them back?” Norrington looked about and his lips
twitched “I see no other ships a little foolhardy don’t you think Sparrow, I
know that you and the Black Pearl have some reputation but really she is just
one ship.”
“And you have a better idea” the irritation in Jack’s voice was clearly
evident.
“I have no plan Sparrow, the Governors orders are to find the girl…”
Jack’s expression grew wary “and why would that be Commodore, why would a kid
from Tortuga be of any interest
to the Governor of Port Royal?”
“I am not privy to the Governor’s confidences Sparrow, but he does not want me
to arrest her, if that is what troubles you.”
“So what you are trying to say Commodore is that you and your pretty boys
there” Jack gestured at the other ships that rested more than a mile away “will
be trailing along behind us?”
“Unfortunately yes..”
Jack hid a grin as he scratched his moustache; sailing into La Habana with a fleet of English ships behind him might just
be the leverage that he needed
