Commencement ceremonies were even more boring than the lectures on history or mathematics they had been forced to sit through daily. Warren glanced over to where Crystal was sitting. Somehow he had known her eyes would be closed. Even if everyone was bored to death, she was not asleep, that much he knew. A few others actually might have been but she was sitting perfectly still in a way that meant she was either listening or off in her own mental world.
Looking out over the crowd gathered for the day, he began to study the people themselves. Some of the younger students were there, others he did not recognize, but it was mostly parents and grandparents. His mom was there. He saw Crystal's dad closer to the front. Gavin's parents--or who he thought were his parents--were seated on the other side of the isle together. He purposely did not look toward Freon's parents.
As it was, the decision to trade robes with Gavin was wise. The split second every one of the graduates had arrived, the student council president decided Heroes would be wearing the black ones and Sidekicks the white since there had been an uneven number of either color delivered. Thus they had been sorted into those two groups. He still thought it was of little help given how badly the rainbows sucked ass.
Warren snapped out of brooding when music began to play. Thankfully they had already gone through that dumb presentation of pictures and home-movies supplied for the graduation video. Dumb idea really. It was just embarrassing. Had to have been a parent thing. No, this music was the filler as each name was called so the students could go up and accept their diplomas. One for Sky High and its true capacity, one that was for the cover school they would use with their Citizen ego.
That was another tedious part of the ceremony in his view. At least there were not that many really in the senior class due to four of its members being locked up for their crimes and all. He went up when his name was called, accepted the two diplomas, shook hands, went back to his seat. Alphabetical order had some merit in truth. Then Crystal was called up. She actually smiled at the audience that clapped for her.
Freon...happened to be right after her. The Ice Queen rose before her name was called and purposely bumped into Crystal hard enough that it made her turn. To her credit, Crystal had also bumped back so Freon almost fell due to the heels she wore. Ignoring the incident save a sweet smile and light "Sorry", the girl with glasses calmly returned to her seat so Freon could have her moment in the spotlight.
Leaning forward, Warren caught Crystal's eye then raised his brows before giving her a shifty look. She simply smirked then stuck her tongue out at him in a childish gesture. He smirked nonetheless and sat back. Finally they were all seated and all of them had their diplomas. That was when Principle Powers assumed the podium to begin announcing the Sidekick assignments. Aside from listening for two names other than his own, he did not pay much attention.
"Gavin Dovev received very high marks in all classes, high enough that it seems surprising he was not included in the same rankings as our young Heroes. Unfortunately, though his powers are strong, they did not meet the requirements. However, he has proven to work quite well with one of our Heroes in particular. Each of them have displayed that they strengthen the other's weaknesses and are not adverse to ridicule. So, it is with great confidence that we have chosen to assign Gavin to his partner, Crystalline Windsong."
Three people in the crowd stood to add their applause to the majority. Warren had been right in pegging the couple as Gavin's parents. Crystal's dad was also standing with a grin. Crystal's reaction was a little less than restrained as she left her seat to go give Gavin a hug so strong Warren could have sworn he heard ribs pop. A few in the class gave disproving looks but they were ignored as the two friends broke apart and Crystal obediently sat down after receiving a stern if amused look from the Principle.
From that point on, Warren only listened for his own name. He had not really been concerned that Gavin and Crystal would be split up. Sure, he had not been positive they would be assigned to one another but he just had a feeling. One by one, the Sidekicks were assigned but not once did he hear his own name. Releasing a sigh of relief, he leaned back when the last Sidekick was given the assignment. He did not have to worry about it then.
After that, there was a closing speech and the ceremony was complete. No caps were thrown into the air, but a few were ripped off heads. Likely robes would be following shortly. The graduating class broke up and moved off as parents and relatives rose to go mingle with their kids and the others. Warren stood and moved over to where Gavin had taken an empty chair near Crystal.
"Hey, guess we made it."
She turned and grinned as she looked up at him. "Yep, who'd've thunk it?"
"Congratulations, Gavin. Given the rest of what you had to pick from, I'd say you're the luckiest Sidekick."
The guy smirked and shrugged. Crystal lightly punched Warren's shoulder.
"Ow! What?"
"You are just as good as I am if not better so don't even start trying to compliment me that way, Firestarter."
Warren just smirked as the two rose. The platform was almost completely empty now. In a group, the three made their way over toward the stairs. Crystal was pulled into a hug by her dad before they could reach the steps and Gavin's parents swooped on him in the same fashion. Warren saw his mom coming up to join them and took the initiative to hug her tightly. It was graduation, everyone was supposed to be emotional. Not that he gave a damn what the others thought.
"I'm very proud of you, Warren."
He smiled and gave her a tight squeeze before pulling back. "Thanks. But can I get out of this yet?"
A laugh rose from Mr. Windsong and Gavin's parents. Apparently they had just been asked the same questions. Crystal had already shoved the cap into her dad's hands and was hiking the robe up. Gavin was doing the same and Warren quickly followed suit.
"Hey, Warren, how about a bonfire?"
"Not in the school, young man," interjected Mr. Dovev.
Both Gavin and Crystal instantly pouted in a clearly put-on way before surrendering their robes to their parents. Likely they would have to hold onto them as some sort of keepsake. If he knew his own mom well enough, she would insist on the same. As long as he could bury it in closets or even in a box in the attic, that was okay.
The group plus parents joined the crowd in another moment. Naturally there was food and drinks so the adults could share stories and further embarrass their kids in public. It also gave the seniors a chance to say farewell to their peers for the last time. Likely most would never see one another outside of class reunions and whatnot. Warren lingered near his mom mostly and took his time listening to random conversations.
He spotted Crystal and her dad heading for the doors. Excusing himself, he made his way through the crowd and tried to catch up. Outside, amidst the busses and the variety of other transport vehicles, a familiar motorcycle rested. Mr. Windsong was already putting the folded robe and the cap in a bag and sliding it into the compartment under the seat.
"Crystal!"
She turned just as the wind caught her hair and made it dance away from her shoulders and neck. Her dad said something and she nodded before moving toward Warren, helmet in her hands. For no real reason, he suddenly had a sinking feeling deep in his gut and it chilled him.
"Leaving?"
"Yeah. Gotta pack for the move..."
"You're moving?" That was new to him.
Nodding, she glanced down at the helmet. "I...wanted to tell you but, I'd always forget because of something...and...well..."
It hurt, but not all that much. There were a lot of things he wanted to tell her or talk with her about but each time he would be ready, they would go do something that completely derailed his train of thought on the matter. At least he was not the only one.
"Okay. You're going to keep in touch, right?"
"As long as you stay at your current address, yeah, you better believe I'll keep in touch. Not planning on moving too, are you?"
"No. Mom's got a good cover job here and...well, haven't gotten enough money saved up myself yet. Will Gavin be going too?"
"Yeah. His parents already gave the O-K for it. Dad's his unofficial guardian while we're off training and learning."
There was an almost awkward period of silence between them as they looked anywhere but at each other.
"Just...take care of yourself, Whirlwind."
He looked up to see the faint smile that caught her lips. Crystal reached up and cupped his cheek with her hand, thumb tracing just under his eye. Unconsciously, he leaned into the touch a little and tried to fight down the lump attempting to choke him. Her eyes were glistening a little.
"Always do. You'd better do the same, understand?"
"Sure. Hey...you told me to ask you something today. Who is your crush?"
Mr. Windsong called her name at that moment. Warren felt his heart skip a beat, fearing she would turn away without saying anything. Crystal did turn...to nod at her dad. Then she turned back to look at Warren before the smile grew a little more and she stepped in to press against him. Her hand left his cheek to curl around the back of his neck in a familiar motion just as she tipped her head to the side and captured his lips.
Instantly his arms slid around her tight, pulling her closer, trying to keep holding onto her as her lips parted, coaxing his apart. He resisted for all of a moment before inviting her in. Their tongues met, stroking against one another and struggling as the kiss grew harder, more desperate. He nipped her tongue, suckling it, trying to tell her just what he was feeling even as he caught the almost harsh need in every plunging stroke of her tongue.
Breaking back, she pressed her cheek to his. Her breath was hot against his ear as she whispered in a tone he swore wavered, "I've had a crush on you since Freshman year...but this year...it's been a lot more than just a crush."
Warren lifted his head, a question resting on his tongue. She broke back, sliding out of his arms so swiftly that for a moment he had no clue she was gone. As he watched her race to the motorcycle and slide on behind her dad, his arms fell to his sides. There was no sense running after her. The motorcycle roared then pulled off as she pulled her helmet on. He watched it soar away and felt the breeze chill the trails of Crystal's tears upon his cheeks.
