Disclaimer: I don't own Labyrinth, don't make any money, this is a work of fanfiction. |
OMG. I've finally updated Concern. Yeah. I know. It's been, like years. I can only give my sincerest apologizes and say that my life basically blew up 3 years ago. I broke my back, had to have that rebuild and within 6 months of healing lost my entire career of 22 years. So I had to rebuild my career. That mean looking for a full-time for the first in in over 20 years. Yeah. Craziness ensued. So, then, once I finally had things going well, I had to focus a ton of energy on the new career. It's really only been the last few months that I've gotten to a point where I'm not freaking out, or worrying. I'm sleeping well. I'm healing. Losing weight, etc. I've finally been writing a lot more too. I've writing several short stories, and I'm actively finishing my original Queen trilogy which is long overdue. AND I'm finishing Concern, which I know y'all are excited about. Who knows, I might even come up with more fanfics if the mood strikes me. We'll see. But I'm so glad everyone is still reading my work and following me, and just know that even if I don't answer, I READ EVERY COMMENT AND I LOVE THEM!

Consciousness returned to Jareth abruptly, the suffocating darkness vanishing like a tablecloth being ripped away. Tendrils of comforting warm surrounded him, infused him, tempted him to remain lying down and kept his eyes closed. It would be so easy to roll over to his side and snuggle into the warmth—so accepting, so forgiving, so loving.
He sat up. “Sarah!” Blinking against the clarity shining all around him, Jareth held up one hand to shield his eyes. As his vision adjusted, details emerged. Colors more vivid than any in his Labyrinth, any he’d ever experienced in his long life. Releasing a slow breath, he absorbed the brilliant rainbow shining back. Someone groaned nearby.
“Tobias?” Jareth turned to find Tobias lying face up a few feet away. He looked healthy and uninjured.
“Jareth?” He sat up, rubbing his eyes with both fists.
Instantly, Jareth was by kneeling by Tobias. “Are you unwell?” With rapid strokes, Jareth patted up and down Tobias’ body. “Are you harmed?”
“I-” Tobias watched Jareth’s hands. “I don’t think so.”
“Thank the gods.” Body shaking, Jareth held Tobias at arm’s length, torn between yanking him into a hug and retaining his dignity.
“Jareth? Are you okay?” Tobias laid in his hand over one of Jareth’s. His smaller hand was warm and soft against his.
Damn his dignity. Pulling his young friend into a tight hug, Jareth whispered in his ear, “I’m quite alright, my boy, quite alright.”
Tobias gripped him just as hard, his thin arms wrapping around Jareth’s waist as he smashed his face into his chest. A small sob escaped him. “I was so scared.”
“Me too.” Jareth buried his nose in his tousled hair and inhaled his scent. The thought of losing Tobias made his chest heavy and tight and his breathing sped up. No! He’d already lost Sarah. He wouldn’t lose Tobias, too.
Clearing his throat and expression, Jareth gently extricated himself from Tobias grip while continuing to touch him. “Well then, shall continue our mission?”
They looked around, curious. They sat in a large meadow, or what looked to be a meadow, with a dome of clear sky the color of liquid silver. No clouds and no single source of light marred the landscape, just endless sky and meadow.
“Where are we?” Tobias asked, hovering close to Jareth and reaching up to take his hand.
Without a thought, Jareth took his hand. “I’m not certain, but Sarah’s soul must be here somewhere. I followed its path precisely.” He squinted to filter to better see farther, but discovered more silver light, grass, and wildflowers. The oceanic meadow was neither manicured nor overgrown—a perfect balance of growth creating a sense of relaxation and isolation. As for his magic, Jareth twisted his hand summoning a perfect crystal filled with as much power as he’d possessed before any of this confusing business. Casting his vision into the crystal, he attempted to see what lie beyond but saw only more meadow and silver sky and a faint glimmer of his face floating inside the crystal. Stretching his magic outwards changed nothing about the view within the crystal. Something stopped it.
“How do we find her?”
How indeed? Jareth gritted his teeth against his rising frustration, vanishing the crystal. He’d never crossed this portion of the Veil before. The occasion had never been presented to him, so he’d never bothered to research it. He’d heard vague stories over the years, but nothing of substance that he considered worthwhile. And he didn’t wish to alarm Tobias, so he quirked a brow and said, “I’d imagine we begin this part of our journey as any other.”
Tobias frowned, and then looked at his feet. “We walk?”
“Smart, chap.”
Tobias scanning left to right. “This place is weird.”
“Yes.”
“But I kinda like it.”
“Indeed?”
Tobias nodded vehemently. “Yeah, it makes me feel funny, like I’m not supposed to be here, but it’s sort of welcoming me anyhow.”
“I see.” Jareth studied his young friend. “I, too, feel odd, as if I’m trying to breathe underwater. It’s as if a force wishes me gone from here, but is unable or unwilling to expel me. I’m not sure which.”
“Why would it want that?”
“I suspect this place will have many questions we will be unable to answer.”
“That sucks.”
“Indeed.” Taking one last look around, Jareth sighed and squeezed Tobias’ hand. “Well, my good man, shall we?”
“Which way?”
“This place seems to prefer you. You choose.”
“Hmm.” Tobias thought for a moment then pointed to his left. “That way feels right.”
“Then that is way we shall travel.”
Giving Tobias a reassuring smile, Jareth stretched out a long leg to start off the next part of their journey. And, faithfully, Tobias followed without complaint, although his grip on Jareth’s hand tightened ever so slightly.

Time held no meaning in this place and apparently neither did distance.
“Jareth,” Tobias tugged on his hand. “How much longer?” The poor boy sounded positively done-in. His small shoulders slumped, his head hung low, his feet dragged with every step, kicking up puffs of pollen from the carpet of wildflowers.
“I’m afraid I don’t know.”
Tobias’ eyes widened. The astonishment quite clear on his face.
“You needn’t be so stunned. I can admit such things.”
“Okay, I just, you know, never heard you-”
“Yes, yes, enough.”
Tobias snickered behind a ghost of a smile. “It’s okay not to know stuff.”
“Of course, it is.” Jareth agreed absentmindedly, keeping his vision focused on the horizon that stretched so far ahead of them. Never ending meadow and silver sky rolled in all directions no matter how far they walked. “But it serves us no purpose now, does it?”
“I guess not.”
“What I wouldn’t give to have access to my library.”
“Does it have answers?”
“I suspect so, but I have no way to reach it.”
“Can’t you stop, you know…” Tobias flipped his hand over and under. “Call it?”
Jareth smirked at his awkward mimicry of his crystal summoning. “Unfortunately, this place is preventing me from doing so. I can access my magic, but it won’t fully obey me.”
A serious expression fell over Tobias’ face and he nodded. “Then I guess we play by its rules.”
“Whatever those happen to be,” Jareth whispered as he studied the metallic sky without end.
The continued walking until exhaustion defeated Tobias, and then Jareth carried him close to his chest until his legs cramped. Even Jareth’s Fae constitution waned amongst the never-ending gorgeous meadow. So, with great reluctance he collapsed to his knees, startling Tobias awake.
“Wh-where are we?” he asked, groggy and blinking his eyes.
Head sinking forward along with his shoulders, Jareth lowered Tobias to the ground. “The same place we’ve been, I’m afraid.”
Tobias didn’t say a word, merely gave him a dull stare reflecting Jareth’s weary emotions.
Wherever they were, it gave nothing and took everything. Nothing changed here, neither the landscape nor the distance they traveled. For all he knew, they’d walked in circles, or perhaps even walked in place as the repetitive scenery offered no sense of direction or motion. Even his magic found to weakness to exploit. It was if they stood at the center and everything they did reflected.
Swallowing hard, Jareth raised his head. “Good gods.” The stunning sky mocked him.
“What?” Tobias startled, having drifted off lying down in the wildflowers.
“I think I understand the rules of this place.”
Yawning, Tobias rubbed his puffy eyes and pushed himself into to sitting position. “Okay.”
“You see how we’ve walked for hours yet nothing changes?”
“Yeah.” Dejection poured from Tobias.
“How even my magic is limited here, as if it’s contained.”
“So?”
“So,” Jareth emphasized the word, “I suspect everything we see and do, in fact everything we are is being reflected back.”
This made Tobias perk up, his sleep-laden eyes clearing. “Like a mirror.”
“More like a mirrored bubble, and we, my boy, are at its center.” Jareth grinned and clapped his gloved hands, triumphant.
Squishing his face as he thought, Tobias gazed around before finally looking at Jareth. “If you’re right, what do we do now?”
Jareth laid on his back, making himself comfortable and stared at the sky. “We certainly cease this aimless wandering.” He reached for Tobias, and once he snuggled close, head tucked into Jareth’s chest, Jareth wrapped his arm around Tobias’ shoulders.
“Now what?” Tobias asked, his voice slightly muffled by Jareth’s once clean shirt.
Tightening his grip on Tobias, Jareth leaned his head in close to his friend’s ear and whispered, “Now we wait, we rest, and we think of Sarah.”
“I can do that.”
*****Please leave a comment. I know it's been ages, but I'd love the feedback to help me stay motivated to finish this lovely story. In my mind, it's got a few more chapters, but I don't want to wrap it up too quick and do it a disservice. Love all of you! Thanks for reading and following! I WILL FINISH THIS!****
