Warren was in Hell. It was Graduation day...and he was facing a personal nightmare. Since no one in the senior class had been able to decide on one general color or even two or three colors, the robes had been ordered in rainbow. Not the one robe was red, one robe was orange, one robe was yellow sort of rainbow. The robes were made from black or white cloth with waves of rainbows over it. His was white.
There really had to be some way to get out of it. Below, he heard the door open and close before his mother's voice drifted up over the pounding of steps coming up the stairs rapidly. "Warren! Crystal and Gavin are here."
Right on cue the two almost fell into the room. In a way he was hardly surprised to see them carrying their Graduation robes as well. Crystal was apparently a lucky one. Hers was a black one. It was dark enough it did not look all that bad. Gavin also had a black one though he seemed to be scowling just as darkly as Warren was. If it had to be a bloody rainbow, he would prefer it to be on black himself.
Both of them seemed rather out of breath as they nearly dropped their robes to slump against the doorframe and bed, gasping. Calmly he waited until they had caught their breath. It was Crystal who recovered first and pushed away from the bed.
"Oh good, we'd hoped to catch you before you changed."
Gavin was nodding but apparently still working on catching his breath. Warren waved him toward the bed. The Sidekick went and collapsed gratefully, staring at the ceiling as he collected himself. Crystal tossed her robe over the foot of the bed and half across her friend's face. He shoved it aside and casually flipped her off--a sentiment she returned--before both looked to the waiting Warren.
"I see you did get one of the white ones then."
"Yeah. There's no way I'll turn up in that thing. Only other color that would be worse is pink."
"Actually, that was one of the suggestions if you remember. But, that's not why we're here."
By then Gavin had caught his breath and was sitting up looking at them.
"Oh, right, why are you here anyway?"
"Well, when we heard that you got a white one...Gavin wants to know if you'd like to trade."
Warren glanced at the guy who nodded. There was supposed to be something about which color went to which class division but that had been thrown out to go in order with names.
"Uh, sure. His loss."
Crystal grinned and shook her head. "You haven't seen him in white yet then. Looks better on him than black. Hopefully it'll stall the fashion police until we can destroy the evidence."
"A trade?" he asked Gavin.
Instantly, the guy nodded and tossed Warren his robe and cap. He returned in kind with the white outfit. Crystal smirked before stepping back and watching as the two guys pulled the robes on. Helping Warren first with his cap, she frowned before gathering his hair in her hands and holding it back as if it were tied. When he turned to look at himself in the mirror, he was rather surprised. Sure the rainbows looked completely stupid, but the black parts were rather nice.
Fussing with the cap, Crystal finally had it on to satisfaction, drawing the rainbow tassel onto the correct side before nodding.
"There. Now, help Gavin while I figure out how to get into this damn thing."
Warren stepped back to let Gavin up to the mirror. He helped tug the robe straight and fix the cap just so. Actually, the Native American's copper skin was made darker by the white. Crystal had been correct. For a guy, Gavin did not look half bad. The rainbows still could have been left out of the picture but it was not really a choice they had either.
Muttering rose from the girl but by the time they turned, she was messing with the cap. Warren smirked and stepped toward her to help get the tassel to stay and center the cap securely. Crystal had tied her hair back at the nape of her neck, but the curls remained visible down her spine. Actually, that reminded him and he went to fish for a tie off the dresser for his own hair.
"Who do you think you'll be assigned as a Sidekick, Firestarter?"
"Since there's more Heroes than Sidekicks in our class, I hope I'm one of the lucky ones that stays solo. What about you?"
"If I don't get Gavin then I hope I do go solo as well really."
"Yeah, you two do work well together."
"So do you and I."
Gavin was nodding his support to those statements though he had to flick the annoying tassel back into place after.
Crystal looked herself over in the mirror before frowning and shaking her head. The way she swiped at the rainbows, he could guess. Warren joined Gavin on his bed and just watched for a moment.
"So, you're still going to the Academy after Graduation?"
"Yeah. I'll likely have a few weeks of vacation time before the semester begins. Gavin's going to join me even if he doesn't get assigned to me."
Nodding, Warren tried to keep from frowning or letting any emotion show. Prom night had led to a real interesting night. They both had a lot of fun but neither had wanted to take it too far. So, aside from a little touching with hands and pressing of bodies, nothing else had happened. It was not very disappointing but he had also wanted to go further.
"You'll write at least, right?"
There was a noticeable pause from the girl. Letting her hands fall away from the cap, she turned to look at Warren. Gavin discretely slipped out of the room and closed the door behind him. Once that was done, Crystal moved over to sink down onto the bed beside Warren and face him.
"It's just going to college basically, Warren. It's not like I'll be gone forever. Trust me, I'll keep in touch."
Meeting her eyes, he just studied them intently. She was right of course but, it still felt as if he was loosing a lot. Apparently she was still as great as ever on reading people--or at least on reading him--because her hand rose to slide around the back of his neck and draw him forward into a kiss. Their caps collided but neither cared when they were knocked off as their lips met. He had since learned just how to deepen the kiss in a way that left her panting by running his tongue along the roof of her mouth then back out.
A light knock at the door caused them to break away. Crystal's teeth actually caught his tongue but the scrape of the sharp edges was welcome. He liked the faint hint of roughness in her kiss. Gavin opened the door a little to check before he stepped back into the room. He brought his arm up and tapped his watch in meaning. Crystal checked hers.
"Damn! We'd better hurry or we'll miss the bus."
"Not taking your bike, Whirlwind?"
"Are you kidding? When I want to destroy this robe, I'd rather do so with my own hands. Come on."
