********** Winston had already gone home, but he’d be back. The work day wasn’t officially over. They worked this schedule frequently. They would work through the morning, come home for the afternoon, and then get back to work in the evening. For some reason ghosts seemed to prefer nights, so Ghostbusters worked nights. Janine and Louis were still downstairs, and Ray was resting on one of the beds in the bunk room. He wasn’t sleepy, though. He was too excited for Egon. When he finally heard the sound of the bay doors opening he hopped up from the bed and slid down the fireman’s pole to the first floor. Egon wasn’t backing the Ecto in, he wasn’t that good of a driver. He just pulled it in and slammed on the brakes just before he hit the orange cones set up to let the driver know he’d cleared the bay doors. "What’s going on?" Janine asked, coming over to stand next to Ray. "Eggy just proposed to Bec, and they told her son Egon’s his father." Ray grinned. "Wait... she’s Peter’s sister? The one from the wedding?" "Yeah, didn’t we introduce you?" "No, but Claire told me about her. I don’t see what the big difference is between me and her." "Oh, Janine... you’re not jealous, are you? I thought you loved Louis." Ray said, looking horrified. Janine patted his arm to console him. "I do. He’s just as smart as Egon, just in different ways. Besides, he adores me. It was like pulling teeth just to get Egon to notice I was in the room. I just wondered why he fell for her and not me." Janine shrugged. Ray could tell she still seemed a little hurt. "Janine, Egon couldn’t fall for you because he was still in love with Rebecca. If he’d met you first..." "It’s okay, Ray. I’m happy with Louis, and look at them. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Egon smile so much." Janine said as Egon got out of the car. He had offered a hand to Rebecca and was helping her out. Aiden was getting out of the other door, school books in hand. "Hey, Uncle Ray. You got a hose around here? These two have been disgustingly infatuated with each other for the whole car ride." Aiden smirked. Janine giggled. "It’s like Peter and Egon had a baby." She laughed. "Well, Bec is a lot like Peter..." "Only I’m better looking. Hi, you’re Janine, right? We didn’t get a chance to meet at the wedding." Bec said, offering a hand to Janine. "I was busy with Lily." Janine replied. "Oh my gosh, I saw her! Isn’t she the sweetest little girl you’ve ever seen! You’re so lucky to have a girl." Becca gushed, and Janine immediately warmed up to her. "What’s wrong with little boys?" Aiden asked, defensively. "Absolutely nothing, but I never got a chance to dress you up all cutesy. Even as a baby you threw fits if I tried to put any cute outfits on you." She told Aiden. He just rolled his eyes. "You should just get a Barbie doll if you want something to dress up." Aiden replied. "Boys just don’t get it." Janine grinned. "No, they don’t." "So, will you be living here? It’ll be nice to have another girl around here. This place practically oozes testosterone and ectoplasm." Janine scrunched her nose. "We haven’t discussed living arrangements yet, but Rebecca and Aiden will definitely be around." Egon replied, resting his hand on the small of her back. "So you said yes?" Ray asked her. "I did. Everything’s out in the open. No more secrets." "Any more PKE emanations?" Ray asked cautiously. "I’ll say. It looked like the fourth of July for a few minutes there." Aiden said. "Even better, once the luminosities faded, her PKE emanations dropped to below normal. I’m thinking a cure exists in self management, not fancy gadgetry." Egon replied. "In other words, I need to train myself to handle it." Bec replied. "We could use Peter’s expertise in this area." Ray said. "Good luck with that." She frowned. "Peter will come around. He always does." Egon assured her. ********** I couldn’t help but feel happy. I hoped Aiden was dealing with all the sudden changes okay. He hid uneasiness with smart ass remarks, just like I did. Of course, when those comments were accompanied by a smile it was usually nothing to worry about. He excused himself to go upstairs and do some homework, and I started to go after him. Egon stopped me with a hand on my shoulder. "He’s had a big day. Let him lose himself in his work for awhile." He suggested. "You think?" I asked, still wanting to go check on him. "I know I’m new to parenting, but I do have experience being a teenaged boy. Besides, we need to figure out how this is going to work out." "I hadn’t thought about it. You’re right, though. Are you hungry? I can make something first." I offered. I didn’t know why I was so freaked out by the conversation we were about to have. I think I was scared Egon would decide it was too complicated to integrate our lives and rescind his offer of marriage. "It’ll wait. Besides, the kitchen’s almost empty. Come on, we can talk in the basement. Ray, let Aiden know where we are if he needs us?" "Sure, Eggy. Hey, I’m gonna talk to Linda. We should have a party for you guys!" Ray beamed. "Sure, we’ll talk about it later, Ray." Egon said, taking my hand. We got halfway down the basement stairs when he kissed me again. I melted into the kiss, running my fingers through the hair at the nape of his neck. He broke the kiss. "We probably shouldn’t do this so close to the containment center. We don’t know how long it takes before your PKE levels regenerate." He told me. "You’re probably right." I sighed and kissed him again. It just felt too good to kiss him. "We’ll need to run a series of experiments to test your levels..." Egon suggested, returning the kiss. The sound of Louis laughing just a few feet away killed the mood. "Maybe these experiments could be run when the station is a little less crowded." I chuckled. "Yes, that would be prudent." He agreed, continuing downstairs once again. "How do you feel about living here? It’s practically empty here now that Ray and Linda are together." "The others won’t mind? I mean, all your names are on the lease. If Peter doesn’t want me here..." "Everything is voted on. Ray and I would both vote yes, overruling Peter." "Well, I think Aiden would love living here. Is the containment center dangerous?" I asked, looking over the ominous looking machine. "Minimally. I was just explaining the upgrades I made to it when we rebuilt to Aiden. Even if it did blow again, Ray and I engineered it to be slightly weaker in the back. It would explode out horizontally instead of vertically." He explained. "You’d feel comfortable having your son live in the same building as the containment center?" I asked him. "Absolutely. I’d be more concerned with the influence of the guys on him." Egon smirked. "Okay then. What about bedrooms, bathrooms... can this place house a family, or is it designed solely to be a bunk house?" I questioned. "We could do a little remodeling, minor stuff. We can clear out one of the storage rooms to make a bedroom for us. We’ll add a bathroom to it. For Aiden we can put in some dividers to give him his own room within the bunk room. The guys nap there sometimes, but with the dividers they wouldn’t disturb him. There’s a small storage area off my lab. I was thinking we could turn it into an office for him. It would give him his own personal space to work in." Egon told me. "I think he would love that. How long do you think it will take to convert this place?" I asked. "The longest part will be making a new bathroom. I’ll have Janine call the company that put in the downstairs bathroom. In the meantime, I’ll get to work clearing out the storage areas. I have just the right one in mind. You should start packing up your apartment... when is your lease up?" "In July." "That’s good. Aiden can finish up the school year. We need to get him scheduled for his equivalency test." "It was you, wasn’t it? You called Dean Palmer?" I questioned. Egon gave me a half smile. "I explained Aiden is my son. I have a reputation there. Not all bad, either. Palmer told me it was practically a done deal anyhow. Aiden is particularly exceptional." "He is... just like his father." I smiled and hugged Egon. He tilted my face up to his. "We made an exceptional child." "We’re good at it, I guess." I giggled. "It might’ve been a one time thing. The only way to prove we produce perfect children would be to repeat the experiment with similar results." "Egon... did you just ask me to have a baby with you?" I grinned, already loving the idea. "Maybe it would be a girl for you to dress up." He smiled. I was getting used to seeing his smiling face. "First we should be married, though. I want to ask Aiden to take my name, as well. Do you think he would mind?" "I think he’d love it. I bet he’s already e-mailed Austin to tell him you’re his father." "Austin is his best friend?" "You’re catching on." "At the park, he called me Dad. I... I liked that. My father had me refer to him as Sir. I don’t want Aiden to feel intimidated by me." "I don’t think he does. Last night on the phone he seemed in awe of you." "Who wouldn’t be in awe of the egghead? Of course now that he knows you’re his father he’ll probably hate your guts. It’s just what teenagers do." Peter said, coming down the stairs. "Peter! I thought you were on your honeymoon." I exclaimed. "Have you ever tried to have a honeymoon with a two year old and a pregnant bride throwing up every morning? I tell you, I see less slime at work. Ray called me. He told me you needed my help, Kitten." Peter explained. "I... I thought you didn’t want me around you." I gulped. Peter grabbed a PKE meter from the workbench and waved it around me. It didn’t even beep once. "Ray helped me to understand I was only adding to the problem. For all of our sakes, I want to be a part of the solution. Just resolving things with Egon and Junior seems to be helping. This thing is working, isn’t it?" He asked, shaking the PKE meter. Egon used the meter on his belt to show Peter the readings were accurate. "I... I don’t know what to say, Peter. I never meant to hurt anyone..." "Look, I knew Pop was turning into a monster. I shouldn’t have left you to fend for yourself. I’m your big brother. I should’ve protected you. Mom dying wasn’t your fault, and Pop was a grown man hiding from the world in the bottom of a bottle. I’m not going to hide like him. I need to make a good role model for Oscar. Running from you is not a good start. So, what do you say, Kitten, fresh starts for everyone?" Peter asked, holding his arms out to me. Egon released me into the arms of my brother. I felt a liberating release of guilt and hurt, and I knew I was finally going to get the life I’d always wanted. ~ THE END ~ Author's Note: Just a thanks to the creators of the Ghostbusters movies and cartoon series, and to the songwriters and performers of all the music mentioned in this story.
