“Kayla,” Sh’lok shook her softly until she looked at
him. “Are you feeling well?”
“I need more sleep than you,” she tried to explain as
the bright light shined in her eyes. She pressed a button on the wall for the
windows to close and put the pillow over her head. Kayla could hear Sh’lok
laughing at her. With much hesitation she got up and wrapped her dress around
her body before going into Su’tara’s room. Before she could panic Sh’lok had
his arms around her.
“I dressed her and she’s with one of her
grandmothers,” he purred softly. “Do not worry, she’s fine. I had one of the
eta’s bring you up something to eat.”
“I’m not hungry.” Kayla turned to look at him. His
eyes reminded her of a beautiful olive green stone. When he laughed they
actually get a little brighter.
“Not yet,” he growled. He lifted her up and Kayla
wrapped her legs around him.
“So why aren’t you out impregnating a bunch of
females?” she laughed.
He didn’t laugh back. “Is that what you want me to
do?” he asked seriously.
Kayla stared back as she felt on his face and neck.
“No.”
“Then never ask me again,” he said softly as he
nuzzled her neck. When he let her down she started to get dressed.
“Did you know there is a different drum rhythm played
in each pyramid?” he said as he watched Kayla tie her hair up.
“How many pyramids are on your planet?”
“Numerous,” he laughed. “Would you care to go listen
to a few of them with me today?”
“I don’t want to go if we are just going to go
listen.”
He growled at her and Kayla started to laugh.
They spent most of their time with one another. Every
time Sh’lok’s father saw him he would beg for a name. Kayla saw Ne’el a few
times and each time he would growl angrily at her. After the tenth time or so,
Kayla waited until he was out of her sight and his hearing range before she
started to laugh.
“Your skin has darkened since we been here,” Sh’lok
noted as they laid in the grass.
“I noticed.”
He could tell something was bothering her. He waited
until she was ready to speak.
“We are leaving in a few days,” Kayla said. “And
Nam’rah informed me that a special meeting will be held to announce Pa’ram as
my mate.”
“Are you excited?” he asked as he stared at her.
“I don’t want to be with him,” Kayla laid her head on
his chest. “He told me he would be doing everyone a favor if he killed me and
he refers to me as ooman. If he can threaten me in such a manner I fear for
Su’tara’s life.” Kayla looked at Sh’lok. “I don’t want him to be my mate.”
“So, who do you want?” he chuckled.
“Need I say it? I want my drum.” She tapped her finger
to the sound of his heartbeat.
“I know of the meeting Kayla and I promise, I’ll be
there,” he assured her. “I’m going to challenge his announcement.” She thought
of what Ga’gan and Maha'vin went through.
“No,” Kayla sat up and looked at him. “I don’t want
you to get hurt.”
Sh’lok laughed at the idea. “Trust me Kayla, Pa’ram is
not a threat. If I yell challenge, he will probably just hand you over.” He
could still tell she was slightly nervous. Sh’lok caressed her face. “Please
know that you will be safe and in my arms by the end of the meeting. My father
is dying to know who I picked. I told him I have a potential mate in mind.”
“When did you tell him this?”
“The day I first mated with you.” He noticed she was
still quiet. “I know that was quite presumptuous of me, being you just lost
Ga’gan…”
“I lost Ga’gan over two years ago,” Kayla sighed.
“Hearing of his death did hurt me greatly, but I’m ok.”
When Kayla laid on her back Sh’lok laid on his side and popped his head
up with his hand. He ran his other hand over her stomach. He noticed Kayla
stiffened. He watched her carefully before placing his ear on her stomach. “Two
heartbeats?” he looked at her and emitted a clicking noise. “I never noticed
before.”
“I’m pregnant,” she said softly.
“That’s wonderful,” he felt on her face softly. “I
can’t wait to feel my baby purr in my arms.” He thought of Ak’hil and Kul’vir
and how they reacted with their kids. Though he knew he had a few on the ship.
It wasn’t proper to ask which one was his or not. It was only something done
among females. Kayla felt too bad to let Sh’lok know the truth. She got up and
started to get dressed.
“Did you find anyone to take that crazy ooman off your
hands?” Ne’el questioned as Pa’ram got dressed for the meeting.
“I was too busy learning about the new medicine,” he
growled in frustration. “Did you tell anyone what Su’tara said?”
“No, my grandmother is crazy,” Ne’el stretched before
he sat down. “Besides, we will be back in space before she knows anything. I’ll
endure her tongue lashing next century.”
“I will be a disgrace to my family,” Pa’ram started
getting angry again. He usually got angry every time he thought of Kayla. He
still couldn’t understand why Ga’gan would choose him to be her mate. “Lucky
for me they are staying on the planet. They will not know of my pairing with
that ooman.”
Ne’el sat up and looked at him. “They will know when
you return with her.”
“Who said she will be alive when we return?” Pa’ram
chuckled.
“You are my friend Pa’ram and I can understand your
anger,” Ne’el said calmly. “But you cannot harm her. Even though the thought of
having her on board still makes my skin crawl from time to time, she is my
niece’s mother. If Ga’gan accepted her…” Ne’el paused and his mandibles started
to twitch as he spoke. “I suppose she isn’t so bad.”
“You really accept that half breed as your niece?”
Pa’ram laughed. Ne’el’s growl was enough for Pa’ram to immediately apologize.
“She has my brother’s blood running through her body,”
Ne’el stood up and looked at his friend. “Half ooman or not I would kill anyone
who even thinks of harming Su’tara.”
Kayla wanted to prepare herself. She had Stef’na watch
her daughter as she got dressed for the meeting. From what she heard, Sa’tesh
and a few of his advisors will determine who will run the second ship. Pa’ram
was to announce Kayla as his mate and she has to say ‘I accept’. Kayla
sharpened the edges of her stick. She thought if she could get a good throat cut
maybe that would change his mind. She looked at herself once more in her
training attire before covering her body with a cloak. As the guards escorted
her to the meeting hall she felt like she was walking to her death.
When Sh’lok answered his door, Kul’vir stormed in
without being invited. “Did you come prepared this time my friend,” he said
with a hint of boredom.
“I have no time for your sanctimonious shit!” he
growled at him. Kul’vir watched Sh’lok for a moment as he rudely ignored him. “You
plan to challenge Pa’ram?” Sh’lok carefully stored his weapons on his body so
no one could see them. “Are you going to the meeting?”
“Yes to both of your questions,” Sh’lok looked at him
for a moment before he continued.
“You and Kayla,” Kul’vir laughed. “She’s not
interested in you. She was trying to get over her feelings for me by mating
with you.”
Sh’lok looked at Kul’vir before letting out a series
of clicks. “Is that what you told yourself every time you saw us together at
the pyramids? I know you watched us on several occasions Kul’vir. Do you have feelings
for her?”
“Of course not,” Kul’vir lowered his tone. “But I do
care that Su’tara could possibly be my child.”
Sh’lok patted Kul’vir on the shoulder. “Don’t worry my
friend. I will raise her like she is my own.”
Sh’lok walked away as Kul’vir answered. “So that means
you never plan on seeing her again?”
They growled at one another when Sh’lok swung around
to face Kul’vir. “If I didn’t have a meeting to attend I would engage you in
this petty argument.”
“You have some time,” Kul’vir sat down. “The meeting
is running late.”
“Kayla come,” Nam’rah purred.
“Everyone is here except your mate and Ne’el. He said something about an
announcement.” Nam’rah walked her over to the others. They were all standing.
“Hello Kayla,” Ba’naj nodded to her. He was one of the
several men that help came to the decisions pertaining to the second ship.
Kayla nodded in return.
“Kayla,” Maha'vin said walking towards her. He spoke
softly, “Why do you have a cloak on?”
“I was warm, it keeps me cool,” she lied. Maha'vin
knew she was lying, but didn’t say anything. He went over to talk to his
brother.
Pa’ram and Ne’el walked in. They both stood across
from Kayla. She looked away as Ne’el hugged his parents and Pa’ram walked
towards her. Maha'vin watched him closely.
“Can’t wait Pa’ram?” Aa’rth teased.
“Well one of us is dying in anticipation,” he laughed.
He stood behind Kayla and whispered in her ear. “During mating, you will never
be prepared and you will regret the day you boarded this ship.” He caressed her
back softly.
“Not yet,” Nam’rah said pulling Kayla away.
“Lee’na has accepted to be my chosen mate,” Ne’el
announced in a joyous tone. Nam’rah clapped her hands together before hugging
her son.
“Well since the circumstances just changed,” Sa’tesh
looked over at Ba’naj. “You do understand Ba’naj?”
“Of course,” he bowed in respect of Sa’tesh’s decision.
“Ne’el you and your mate will run the new ship under
the watchful eye of Ba’naj until I think you’re ready for elder status. There
is one condition.”
“Anything Father,” Ne’el said.
“You have to take that over sexed Yautja with you. Aa’rth’s son,
Sh’lok. He has populated this ship enough. If you need a larger crew
take him.” They all started to laugh.
“No, no, no, Sh’lok has an announcement as well,”
Aa’rth chuckled.
“No,” Ba’naj said in shock. “You think he has found a
mate? What female has this type of hold on Sh’lok? We all must meet her.”
“He has me in suspense as well,” Aa’rth growled.
“Well this one will go down in history,” Sa’tesh
teased. “I can’t believe it. Such a wild boy you have Aa’rth. I don’t think he
had seen any of the cultural background of the planet. He spent most of his
time in the drum rooms.” Everyone started to laugh except Kayla and Nam’rah.
She looked over at Kayla and Kayla’s pulse started to race. She knew that look.
It was her ‘I know’ stare. Kayla looked away. She slowly untied the front of
her cloak but kept it closed with her hands.
“Well I would also like my uncle to come along as an
advisor as well,” Ne’el announced. “If it weren’t for him I wouldn’t have
survived my mission.” Ne’el looked at Kayla. She looked uncomfortable when he
mentioned his mission. When she looked at him he nodded to her in respect. She
acknowledged his nod with one of her own.
“That depends on Ka’mya,” Maha'vin said to him. “She
has agreed to be my mate.” Sa’tesh laughed and gave him a hug. Maha'vin looked
at Kayla whom still was looking down at the floor.
Kayla couldn’t believe what she was hearing. He chose
to mate with the female who hated her as much as Pa’ram and Ne’el. She told
herself she didn’t care, but another part of her still asked the question, why.
Nonetheless she was happy for him. When she looked up at him he was staring at
her. She nodded in his direction and he focused his attention back to his
overly happy brother.
“I know it was really hard for you to come to that
decision Maha'vin,” Sa’tesh said softly. “I’m happy for you.”
“Now to wrap everything up on this joyous occasion,”
Nam’rah said as she looked at Kayla. “There is my daughter, Kayla. My son had
chosen her mate before his heroic death…”
Kayla’s heart started to pound as she looked at
Pa’ram. Maha'vin could sense her pulse racing.
“Pa’ram if you will,” Nam’rah nodded to him. He nodded
back and looked at Kayla. “Nam’rah I choose Kayla as my mate.”
There was a long silence as they looked at one another.
“Kayla your response,” Nam’rah said.
“For the greater good of the Jac’Skul
De Legion,” Kayla took in a deep breath. She looked at everyone whom was
staring at her then back to Pa’ram who stared at her angrily. “I do not
accept.”
“What!” Sa’tesh yelled.
Pa’ram roared at her and Kayla charged at him. Her
cloak fell off when she kicked him in the chest. He was stunned and knocked off
balance. No one expected her to attack him, except Maha'vin. He trilled softly.
Wow she’s is still very swift to be a mother, he thought as he crossed
his arms. Damn, that ooman turns me on. He watched Kayla jump on the
table and kick the stunned Yautja in the head causing him to fall on his back.
She never gave him time to fight back. Kayla quickly reached for her sticks
that were attached to the sides of her thighs, gave them a quick twirl, and held
the sharp sticks to his neck as she crotched down on his chest.
“You will not be my mate,” she yelled at him. “Stand,
down!”
“She got me with that same move,” Aa’rth nodded to
Ba’naj. “She’s still good.”
“Yes I remember,” Ba’naj nodded as they watched her.
“You were Maha’vin for the day.” They both chuckled.
Ne’el watched her in amazement. He was told she could
fight, but he had never seen her in action for himself. Maybe I’ve misjudged
this ooman, he thought as he watched her press her weapon deeper into his
friend’s throat. She’s not as weak as I thought she was. Kayla would make an
interesting opponent.
“Kayla,” Nam’rah barked at her.
When Kayla looked up at her Maha'vin and Ne’el spoke
at the same time. “I choose Kayla as my second mate.” They looked at one
another and back to Kayla.
Pa’ram caught her off guard and pushed her up high
enough to punch her stomach and kick her off. Kayla landed on Ba’naj’s feet.
Maha'vin roared at him as Ne’el held him back. “Try
that with me!”
Kayla managed to sit up on her knees. Ba’naj reached
his hand out to her, but she declined. Her respect grew from the males in the
room. Kayla looked at Pa’ram whom was now on his feet staring back at her.
Ne’el stood in front of him and punched him in the jaw before grabbing his
neck. “I told you she was my niece’s mother and to respect her!” he growled at
him. “Do not force me to end our friendship.”
“That crazy ooman attacked me!” he yelled as he
snatched himself away from Ne’el’s grasp. “You both can have her as far as I’m
concerned.” Kayla tried to stand but felt an incredible pain in her stomach.
“Kayla, whom do you choose?” Nam’rah barked. Kayla
looked at Ne’el then Maha'vin as they awaited her answer. She didn’t want
either one of them. Ne’el would never touch her and she never wanted Maha’vin
to touch her again. Most importantly, she didn’t want to be second to no one.
Kayla stood up as she held her stomach.
“For the greater good,” she said out of breath. “Of the Jac’Skul De Legion.” She
paused as she looked at the door. Please Sh’lok, she begged in her head
as a tear fell. She watched the door for a moment. Maha’vin growled at her
causing Kayla to look at him. “I accept…” Kayla sighed as she tried to wait for
Sh’lok. She shook her head in disbelief. She was so sure he would be there. She
believed in him and everything he said. She turned away from the door and
stared at the two Yautja’s in front of her. Her body trembled as she tried not
to fall back down from the pain. “I accept…”
“Just admit it so I can leave,” Sh’lok growled. “You
have feelings for Kayla and that’s why you don’t want her to be my mate!”
“I do not have feelings for her!” Kul’vir yelled.
“It’s your scent that’s trapping her like all the others. Just leave her
alone!”
“Or else what Kul’vir?” they stood glaring at one
another. “You’re going to go get mad and tell your father? How do you think
they will feel about their precious son when they find out Su’tara is your
baby. You violated her.”
“You wouldn’t dare,” Kul’vir growled.
“I wouldn’t because it will hurt and upset Stef’na and
Kayla,” he assured him. “We are friends Kul’vir. I wish you no harm, but you
could at least wish me happiness with the mate of my choice.”
“Choose someone else and I will wish you and your
family well.”
“I choose Kayla,” he said walking out the room. “If
you don’t like it then that’s your problem. I have a meeting to crash.”
“That meeting is over,” Kul'vir huffed. Sh’lok looked
at him before running off to the meeting hall.
(Well this story is coming to
an end…. But being the eccentric person that I am I have
three endings, lol. Yes, I will be posting all three.
Remember how you used to read the books where you have to turn to a certain
page if you choose a particular person, well that’s my ending… The first one
will be my primary ending. Then a crazy alternate then one I’m sure silentVoid would love!)
Thank you
all again for the great reviews.
You guys rock!
