A/N Yay! Here’s another chapter for you, and it’s longer than I usually write. Be prepared that this fiction may get darker in parts, starting with this chapter. And again, thank you to everyone who reviewed the last chapter. I really enjoyed your comments. Sorry you had to wait a bit for this chapter. Life has been very busy lately. The good thing about waiting is more and more plot points get thought of in order to make this fiction even better. So, I hope you enjoy.
Disclaimer: I do not own The Covenant and make no money from the writing of this fiction. Chapter Twenty-One Madi’s head hurt. It had grown quiet in Sarah’s car, as they made their way toward Boston for the holiday break. She closed her eyes for awhile, trying not to focus on that hard pit of fear nestled in her belly. She felt as though she were driving to her doom, knowing who she would have to face in Boston. The Pope Family Bible was stashed safely in her bag, wrapped in cloth to protect it’s very old bindings. She had contemplated leaving it behind in Ipswich in order to work a deal with Chase, a deal which would involve the safety of her friends and family. But yesterday had changed everything. Madison wanted to scream, cry, tear her hair out - but she couldn’t lose it in front of Sarah. Sarah was a nice person, but she would surely report anything important to Caleb. There was only so much Madison could confide in her. Sarah had already done a lot for Madison. Madison spared a weary glance at the blonde, who focused on the road ahead but with a worried frown on her face. Madi knew she had done this to Sarah. She had brought Sarah into her bubble of fear and paranoia regarding Chase. The few months of feeling safe Sarah had experienced after Caleb had defeated him was now over. But Madison knew Sarah was not safe. Not as long as she was away from Ipswich, visiting her family as well. If Sarah was important to Caleb, she would be a target. Sarah glanced at Madison, concerned. “You all right?” Madison shook her head. “Head’s pounding. And, I’m sorry if this sounds rude and ungrateful, but your car stinks bad.” “It’s the rue in the trunk,” Sarah replied with a small laugh. “Sorry about that. I tried to seal it up. I’m going to stuff it all around my house.” “Guess I won’t be coming over for dinner then.” “Hey, we can always meet up somewhere else,” Sarah smiled, apologetically. Madison tried to smile, but there was nothing happy inside of her at the moment, nothing but a deep, dark fear. Not for Sarah. Chase seemed to have placed Caleb on the backburner for now. His new obsession was Madison. “Something else is bothering you,” Sarah stated, glancing at the girl next to her. She was crumpled against the passenger side door as if in pain. “This can’t be all from the rue.” Madison rubbed her face wearily. “It’s not. I… had a fight with a friend yesterday. I’m just really worried for her.” “You want to talk about it?” “No. Thanks, but, I just don’t feel like rehashing it all at the moment.” Sarah seemed hurt that Madison wouldn’t confide in her, but that was just the problem, wasn’t it? Madison couldn’t confide in her about Chase, about her deepest fears. She wished she did have a confidant in this matter, someone she could tell everything to. When she closed her eyes, all she could see was Raina’s happy face. Her two best friends in Boston, Raina and Ben, had talked to her on Skype yesterday, excited that Madison would be returning to Boston the next day. They loved communicating this way, being able to see each other’s faces on the computer screen. Of course, they were upset that Madison would be coming home to Boston for the last time, but she had assured them that they definitely should come stay with her during spring break and in the summer. But that was not the source of the friction, however. People move all the time. After about ten minutes of silly, excited conversation, Raina announced, “Guess what, Madi? Ben is the only virgin now.” “What?” Madison laughed. “Shut up, Rai, you ho,” Ben howled, pushing her playfully. “Ho?” Raina rolled her eyes. “Ben’s just jealous because I have a boyfriend now.” Madison leaned toward the screen, lifting her eyebrows. “Oh, really?” She blushed and nodded. “And he’s soooo hot, Mads. Oh, my God! I love him!” “Where’d you meet him? I know there was nobody that hot at our school…” “There is now,” Raina laughed. “He’s new. And I mean, it’s weird, you know? Guys like that usually go for the bubbly cheerleader types. But he’s like totally crazy for me.” Madison laughed with her. “I think you underestimate yourself, Raina. Why wouldn’t a hot guy like you?” “I told her it was her big boobs,” Ben interrupted. “Shut up, Ben. You wish you had boobs,” Raina laughed. Madison watched her two friends as they pushed and insulted each other playfully. She really missed being around them. But it was then that the horror of the situation revealed itself. As Madison watched them tease and insult one another as they always did, Ben mimicked Raina’s voice, “Oh, Chase, I’m cold. Hold me and warm me up.” “What did you say?” Madison interrupted. “What’s his name?” Raina and Ben stopped their play and looked into the camera. “Chase. His name is Chase. Kind of cute, eh?” Madison sat staring at the screen, stunned. It couldn’t be, could it? “Chase what?” she asked, heart pounding. “Chase Pope,” Raina replied. “Why? You don’t know him Madi, he moved here from California.” Pope. He was using Pope, not Collins. Of course he wouldn’t use Collins since he disappeared from Ipswich and the authorities had found no trace of him. Madison stared at the screen, holding her breath, yet wanting to scream. Chase was with her friends, sleeping with Raina! And she knew this had nothing to do with her friends and everything to do with her. Chase had found the means to control her, keep her in line. And it was at that moment Madison knew there would be no bargaining with Chase. “Mads? What’s wrong with you? Why are you looking like that?” “Raina, listen to me. Chase is not who you think he is. He’s dangerous. You have to stay away from him.” “What?” Raina laughed, incredulously. “How could you possibly know him, Madi? This is crazy.” “Maybe she’s having one of those psychic episodes,” Ben spoke. “No, listen, there was this guy named Chase who went to Spencer for about a month. He killed a guy at school and put two more in the hospital. He’s a psycho, Raina! He disappeared in October and no one knows what happened to him.” Raina lost her smile. “That’s not funny, Madi. Stop shitting me like this. Even if your story is true, it’s not the same Chase. My Chase is super nice. And he didn’t go to Spencer. He’s from California.” “He lied.” Ben could see the anger building in Raina and quickly interjected. “Look, Madi, it’s not the same Chase. He’s really a great guy.” “He acts like he’s your friend at first - before he goes all psycho. He did that here at Spencer with my friends. You have to believe me. Stay away from him, switch schools, something. Just get away!” Raina exploded at the screen. “Fuck you, Madi! You have your rich school, with your rich boyfriend and are surrounded by all his rich hot friends. And you have the nerve to try to ruin my happiness by telling me my boyfriend is a murderer! I’m finally happy and in love and you want me to dump him? Fuck you with a capital F! You know, I’m glad now that you are leaving Boston for good, you mean bitch.” “Raina, please…” But Raina had left the view of the computer screen and Madison could hear the door of the room slamming as Ben’s face came into view. He looked deeply troubled. “That was uncalled for, Madi,” Ben scolded. “Just because the guy’s name is Chase… you don’t know it’s the same one.” Tears were already falling down her face as she gazed at Ben, stunned with her knowledge of how much danger they were in. “But I do know, Benny,” she said softly. “And I’m so scared for you both. I don‘t want to lose you.” “Have you been taking your meds?” Madison squeezed her eyes shut. She was so tired of that question. Anytime she wasn’t acting the way everyone else expected her to, it was because she was crazy and forgot her anti-crazy pills. “Ben, please, you’ve got to believe me.” “Do you have any news articles you can send to me about that murder or any links to the site that says Chase Pope is wanted by the police?” “There are articles about the murder, but the police haven’t figured out who is responsible yet.” “Yet, you figured it out?” “He admitted it to my friends here! And he put two of them in the hospital.” “Why didn’t they tell the police on him then?” “Because… there are circumstances… damn it, Ben, just believe me.” “What circumstances?” “I… can’t tell you.” Ben shook his head. “I love you, Mads, but you need to seriously rethink this stuff. I got to go.” “Ben, wait…” He was gone. In a matter of ten minutes she had managed to seriously damage her friendships. Chase had won. The car came to a stop, jolting Madison awake from deep thoughts. She looked out the window, noticing they were in front of her house. “We’re here,” Sarah announced. “You’ve got my cell number, right?” Madison nodded. “Thanks for the ride. I’m sure my dad is grateful too.” “No problem. I only live about twenty minutes from here, actually.” They both got out of the car, Madison opening the back seat to pull out her baggage, and Sarah opening the trunk. Madison stepped away as the smell of the rue wafted out. “Ugh, that stuff’s disgusting.” She glanced into the trunk, noticing huge super soaker water guns bundled together. “What’s with the water guns?” “They are filled with rue water. I’m going to put one in every room of our house - just in case.” Madison sighed. “I’m sorry I made you so paranoid about Chase lately.” “You’re right, though. We shouldn’t let our guards down. Especially when we away from Caleb. Here, these are for you.” She handed a plastic gallon-sized zip lock bag to Madison, filled with very small plastic squirt guns. “How come I get the small ones?” Madison grinned. “I figured you would only get one shot off before Chase could take it away from you. I was afraid if you didn’t use all the rue water in the gun, he could use it back on you. It wouldn’t affect me if he put rue on me, but it would you. These small ones have enough water for one shot, so aim for the eyes. That could give you time to get away. Hide one in each room of the house so you can be near one at anytime.” Madison shook her head, marveling at how Sarah came up with strategies like this. “Thanks,” Madison said. “I don’t know how you come up with this stuff, but I’m glad you do. Caleb chose well.” Sarah blushed, pleased. “Now, about the demon thing,” Sarah continued, looking about to make sure no one was near. “Don’t worry, my Dad’s not home yet. His car is gone,” Madison said. Sarah nodded. “If you or I come across Chase, you need to address the demon and ask him his name.” “Why?” “It was in that big book of Demonology, remember, the one we found at Marish house. I was studying it and it said to find out the name of a demon, you have to ask it for it’s name three times on three separate occasions. The third time you ask, it has to give it to you.” “Oh, wow, I think you’re right,” Madison marveled. Sarah was definitely an asset. “I do remember during the ritual to exorcise the demon, Elizabeth called it by name. She knew which demon was inside of him. That must be important to the ritual.” “Exactly. That’s what I think too,” Sarah agreed. “Of course, I’m hoping we don’t come across Chase, but just in case we do…” Madison nodded. “We need to know who’s in him - if we survive three meetings with Chase.” “Hey, think positive.” “I’ll try. You’re the best, Sarah. I mean that.” Madison hugged her. “Thank you for all your research and all your help.” “I wish I could give you more than squirt guns.” “If you had a forest in your trunk, that would help too.” “Sorry, fresh out of forests.” OOOOOOO You want me to drive down there and help? Madison smiled at Tyler’s text message. She had just been complaining about having to go through all her closets and sort through what she wanted to keep. The house was a mess of moving boxes and stacks of stuff she hadn’t see in years. The only room in the house still as it had always been was the living room where the Christmas tree stood. Aaron Marish declared that the living room would not be touched until after Christmas was over. No, don’t bother. You wouldn’t know what we wanted to keep and what we wouldn’t want to keep anyway. You don’t miss me? Of course I do. But I wouldn’t get anything done if you were here. And Madison didn’t want Tyler here. Chase would definitely harm him without Caleb around. It had been two days since she had arrived in Boston and Chase had not shown up yet. She couldn’t sleep and hardly ate because she was so worried about what he was doing with Raina and Ben. She tried to call them over and over, but they would not answer. She had even went to their houses, but their families had said they weren’t home. Madison suspected they were lying. She had only had a short text from Ben yesterday that said: Give us some time, o.k.? They were hanging out with a killer, and they wanted more time? Madison was frantic with worry. She could imagine Chase was enjoying her torture, being a shoulder for Raina to cry on and knowing inside how scared Madison must be now that she knew. Her dad was there most of the time, but was still working half days to wrap things up at his old job. This afternoon they were throwing him a farewell luncheon and Madison expected he wouldn’t be back for awhile. She hated being alone, wondering when Chase would come for his book - and for her. But she also feared what would happen to her dad if he was here when Chase showed up. She glanced at the small squirt gun under her bed as she sat on the floor, going through a box of old toys. Most of the stuff she was planning to toss, but some of it she wanted to keep for the sake of nostalgia. She took a deep breath, laying her head on her arms which rested on the side of the toy box. Her mind wandered back to last week, when Caleb had come into her dorm room late one night, sitting on the side of her bed. It never frightened her when the Sons came into her room, even when she couldn’t see them. She always could smell the scent of warlock, and feel the crackle of their power as they neared, especially Caleb’s power, which was unmistakable. She had slowly awakened to the feel of his fingers caressing her cheek, pulling strands of her hair back and around her ear. She had turned sleepily onto her back, gazing at his silhouette in the dark. “Caleb?” “Hey,” he replied softly, bending down to kiss her. “Your ropes work.” “What?” “Sarah tested them on me tonight. They work. Though, I have to say I didn’t enjoy being powerless.” “Did she take advantage of you?” Madison laughed. Even in the dark, she knew he was smiling. “It was fun for a bit,” he said, his fingers sliding down over her neck, making her shiver, as they hooked onto the top of her bedspread. “But, I prefer to be the one in control.” Madison’s pulse had sped up as he slowly pulled the covers down past her breasts and continuing down her body to her knees. His hand then traveled back up her thigh, grazing her most sensitive area with a soft caress. His deep voice made her tingle almost as much as his touching did. “Tell me, Madi, why you are so afraid of Chase? Don’t you trust that I can protect you?” Madison lifted her hips, wanting more of his hand on her. “Yes, I know you can protect me.” When I’m in Ipswich. He slipped his skilled fingers into her panties, loving how responsive she was. “Then stop being scared. I‘ll always protect you.” A door slammed, bringing Madison awake from her memory of Caleb. Her dad wasn’t suppose to be home yet. “Dad?” she called out, receiving no answer. Madison grabbed the squirt gun from under the bed, it was so small that it fitted inconspicuously in her palm. She walked cautiously out of her bedroom and down the hall leading to the living room. “Hello?” She heard the sound of a glass being set on the tile counter in the kitchen and liquid being poured. “Whoever is there, I called 911. They are on their way,” Madison called out. She heard laughter and someone said, “No, you didn’t. Get in here, witch. We‘ve got business to discuss.” Chase. Madison bolted for the front door, but it was sealed tight when she tried to pull on it. She heard laughter behind her and she swung around, seeing Chase Pope lounging lazily in the kitchen doorway, drinking her father’s blueberry juice. “Don’t be foolish. There’s no escaping me.” He walked over to a chair and sat down as if he had just come for a friendly visit. “I see you convinced dear old dad to move. You know, even in Ipswich I can still get to him without alerting Caleb. It wouldn’t be as fun as using my powers, but I could still kill by other means. If it becomes necessary, of course. It all depends on you, Madison, and how cooperative you are going to be.” “What are you doing with Raina?” Madison blurted out. “Just making sure you know how easy it is for me to get close to the ones you care about… how precarious their existences can be if you choose to fight me.” “What will it take to get you to leave my friends alone? I found your damn book. You want sex with me? I’ll do it. Just leave them alone.” “I know you found the book. I can sense it is near. Well done, by the way. I wasn’t sure it existed anymore. As for the sex…” Chase looked her up and down, making Madison feel repulsed. “I was thinking that maybe, as a reward for the book, I can make it good for you - just this time.” “There is no way sex can be good with you!” “Raina feels differently.” “You’re sick.” But as Madi stood, pressed against the front door, Chase’s eyes went dark. She could feel invisible hands running over her body and strange electric sensations licking her skin, focusing on her most intimate parts. “Stop this!” she yelled, trying to move away from the sensations. But she couldn’t. They followed her, moved with her. Chase grinned evilly from his chair, enjoying the sight of the witch writhing and trying to fight the invisible pleasure he was causing her. It just made Madison more furious to see him grinning - winning. “WHAT IS YOUR NAME, DEMON?” she screamed. The sensations stopped immediately and she stared at the warlock, who was no longer grinning. His black eyes turned bright red and his mouth contorted into a sneer. Madison was filled with horror at the sight. And now she knew for certain there was a demon in Chase Pope. Two more times, and he’d have to tell her his name. Unfortunately, they would have to be on separate days. He stood up, fists clenched and eyes blazing. “Tricky witch, you think you are so clever. I was going to give you pleasure. Now I will give you pain.” Madi was shaking as he stalked across the room toward her, but she slipped her finger through the trigger of the squirt gun in her palm, fumbling to prepare it. She would have one chance to aim for the eyes. She lifted it and pointed at his face. The warlock/demon stopped a moment, looking at the toy gun and beginning to seem amused just as Madison pulled on the trigger. But her hand shook so much that she missed his eyes and the stream of rue water slashed down across his cheek. His skin sizzled and smoked as an angry welt rose quickly. Chase hissed and grasped his cheek before using his powers to snap the bone in Madi’s arm. Madison screamed and fell on the floor in excruciating pain. “What the fuck was that, witch?” He kicked her broken arm, making her scream louder. “Now you will pay for your insolence.” OOOOOO Raina and Ben heard the screams coming from Madison’s house as they got out of Ben’s car. They had been coming over to try and talk things over with their friend, knowing that Madison’s paranoia was probably medicine related and that they should try to be more understanding of her problem. They looked at one another in indecision until they heard the second scream. Running to the front door, they found it locked. But they knew how to get in through the garage, as they had observed Madison using the hidden key on the side of the house many times to get in. Ben and Raina scrambled to find the key, trying to steady their hurried hands as they unlocked the garage side door. They heard Madison screaming and crying as they opened the door and hurried through the garage and into the house. “Madi!” Ben called out as they ran into the living room. The horror that met their eyes froze them in their tracks. Madison was pinned to the ceiling by a man and her face was a bloody mess. The man was moving and it took them a few moments to realize he was raping her. On the ceiling? How… how was that possible?” “Oh, God,” Raina cried. “Madi? Oh, God!” She gasped as Madison was thrown to the ground like yesterday’s trash. The poor girl sobbed in pain, her body barely able to put itself in a comfortable position. When the man floated down from the ceiling, he pulled his pants on and turned around, challenging the visitors with an evil grin. “Enjoy the show?” he spat. “Ch…Chase?” Raina stuttered. How could this be? What… what the hell was he? She glanced at Madison and the sight of her made Raina clench her stomach, feeling sick. “What did you do?” she sobbed in growing hysteria. “YOU FUCKER! I‘LL KILL YOU!” Ben yelled, finally coming out of his shocked stance. He dove toward Chase, his fists in the air. “Ben… no…” Madison gasped, weakly from the floor, holding her unbroken arm outwards. Chase’s eyes blazed red and Ben flew backwards, slamming into the wall with such force that the plaster dust flew. Ben’s body slid down the wall, a trail of blood following where his head touched. “No… please…” Madison croaked. Chase turned his red eyes to her. “This is your punishment, witch. Fight against me and someone dies. This is your fault.” “Stop!” Madi cried. She tried to drag her battered body closer, but it was no use. The demon turned his devil eyes back on Ben and Madison heard a sick snap as Ben’s head fell over in a grotesque position. Raina screamed in horror, looking at Ben’s dead eyes. Then she threw herself against the wall as the demon turned to her. He stepped toward her as she cried, “No, please, don’t,” her mascara running in grotesque lines down her face. He stopped. His eyes roamed over her body, hesitating. Raina began hyperventilating from fear. She knew she was going to die, but why was he waiting. Why did he stare? Then he said, “You’re safe for now.” She fell on her hands and knees, gasping for air. She knew he hadn’t left, but he seemed to be ignoring her. He was walking through the house, searching for something it seemed. Raina couldn’t look at Ben again. He was so clearly dead. This was a nightmare. It couldn’t possibly be real. She crawled to Madison, who was whimpering in pain. Raina shook as she removed her coat and lay it across Madison’s nude, bloody body. Chase came into the room, pulling on his coat and holding a large, old book. “Well, ladies, I hate to run, but I must. See you next month, Marish. Take care of yourself, Raina.” The moment he stepped out of the door, Raina put her hand in her coat pocket and pulled out her cell phone. 911 “Please, hurry, we’ve been attacked. One of my friend’s is dead and one is hurt very badly.” We are sending help right now, miss. Do you know the person who did this? Is this person still there in the home? “He just left. His name is Chase Pope. He goes to my school.” Raina felt a hand on her wrist. “Just a minute,” she said, putting the operator on hold. “Mads, I’m calling for help. I’m getting you help. I’m so sorry I didn’t believe you. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me,” Raina said. Already they could hear the sirens approaching. Madison was ready to pass out, but she had to tell Raina… “Rai, don’t… don’t… tell about anything… supernatural. Rai… they won’t believe you… put you away…” Raina could hear the police and paramedics coming to a stop in front of the house. “O.K. Mads, I won’t.” “I’ll… tell you… later…” Those were the last words Madison spoke before she passed out. OOOOOO A/N Thanks for reading. I hope there are people still following this story.
