-Chapter Twenty-
“My ship? You've found my ship?” Raven had apparently followed Jack out of his cabin. She was now standing with a hopeful look upon her features.
Jack looked back at her, seeing that hope of hers and sighed to him. He gazed over in the direction of the ship in the distance then produced an eye glass for her to look through.
“Want to confirm it Luv?”
“More than anythin'.” She responded, nodding her thanks as she took hold of the eye glass. She extended the instrument and placed the smallest end to her eye.
Through the contraption she moved her angle of sight until she was getting a more up close vision of the ship ahead. There not too far away were the familiar markings that she had taken for granted until it was snatched away from her, by someone as far as she was aware she had never sat eyes on before.
“Well Luv?”
Jack's voice broke the silence.
“It's my Diamond.” She nodded in confirmation, handing him back the eye glass. She then gave Jack a curious look, astonished in a way that it had been that easy to find her ship. “How did we catch up with her so quickly? They had a day ahead of us.”
“Ah, but the Pearl is no slow baby. You not 'eard the tales of her being the fastest out on the ocean before lass?”
“I 'ave aye. I thought it was just a story though.”
Jack flashed a smile filled with gold teeth at her.
“Says the very woman goin' after a legendary treasure.”
“Point taken.” She answered with a small nod of her head.
“They probably caught wind of us Captain.” Gibbs' interrupted the pair, keeping them aware of their situation. “A new move would be my thinkin'.”
“Indeed.” Jack agreed with his first mate, then barked out his orders towards the crew. “All hands on deck! Get to your points lads!”
The next few minutes seemed like a lifetime to Raven. The closer the Pearl got to the other ship, her ship, the tenser she felt. She had shooed both Willy and Robert into Jack's cabin, they were the only passengers that were to stay away from the up coming battle. Malone was standing by her side, watching her carefully.
“You'll get her back Captain.” He spoke to her in a soft tone.
“Don't Malone, just concentrate on focussin' yourself on killin' the sons of bitches.” She spoke, practically gritting her teeth together.
The ships now came in close proximity giving chance for both sides to attack. The gun fire from pistols started almost immediately, cannon fire shortly afterwards. Men from both ships swung over via ropes starting the armed combat. Each direction had the sound of metal clanging against metal, along with grunts of pain, yells of anger, thuds as bodies fell to the ground.
Jack had himself occupied in a battle with two pirates, neither of them all that fancy with their footwork. One was disarmed easily, while another received a slash across their ribs.
At one point his back slammed against another, which put him off what he was doing. He half turned on the spot to swing his cutlass in that direction, only just about managing to stop himself as he realised that it had been Raven.
She was holding her own against a male that was a pretty good fighter. Her gaze was dark as her sword clashed against his, using her full body weight to shove him back
“Why ye do it Jim? Why ye join that bastard?” She yelled at the man that had betrayed her.
“Was either that' or death!” Came the reply.
“Ye should 'ave died with the others.” She stated back, using one leg to kick out the legs from under him. Switching the angle of her cutlass she brought it crashing down hard into her former crew members chest. With an angry yell she ripped it out, then spun to tackle the next person she came into contact with.
“You fight well ...... for a whore.”
She came face to face with a neatly dressed male, older in years, even seemingly like a gentleman considering the fact he was wearing a wig, generally only seen in upper classes.
“Willoughby I assume.” Came the snarl from Raven.
The man gave her a mocking bow.
“At your service. May I thank you for the use of your ship. Though had I known about this vessel I would've taken it instead.”
Even over the fighting that caught Jack's attention. Slamming the hilt of his cutlass into the face of another his attention was drawn over to the pair that were staring each other down.
“Careful lass.” He warned.
Willoughby found this amusing and barked out a laugh.
“A pet, how nice.”
Raven gave a yell as she made a dive for the man that had been responsible for taking her ship. She was taking it personality, and in Jack's experience it was a distraction that lead to mistakes. The clang of a sword right near him caught his attention away from the pair.
A loud blast came from the other ship which caught Raven's attention, taking it away from the male that she was intent on killing.
That brief bit of distraction was all that Willoughby needed, he used the hilt of his sword to punch Raven, catching her off guard and sending her sprawling to the ground. He took the opportunity to head off, intending on returning to the Diamond.
A backwards moving Jack lost his balance as his foot caught Raven in the side, sending him falling backwards over her, landing in a heap. He stared in a daze up above, when he caught sight of thick smoke appearing from the side of the ship.
With a groan he pulled himself up and shifted to quickly check on Raven, other than being unconscious she seemed to be fine. She would feel it when she came to though.
It was that thick smoke that he was starting to worry about though.
“Jack! The Diamond!” Gibbs' yell was an urgent warning one. It was enough to tell Jack though that the ship was in trouble, for it was there where the thick smoke was coming from. Flames licking up from within the cargo deck.
If the flames got near the gun powder aboard then both ships could end up in trouble. Serious trouble.
“Get us away Mister Gibbs!” Came Jack's response.
“Aye Captain!”
The next few minutes was an act of desperation on both sides as the crews realised that the other ship had a fire on board. Some of the enemy crew dived overboard, while the ones still on the Diamond tried their best to escape by trying to untangle what few lifeboats it had.
The speed of Gibbs' and other crewmen helped to steer the Pearl out of danger, though only just.
In the confusion Willoughby ended up being trapped by Malone, but the enemy male wasn't stupid enough to try and escape the capture. He knew that he had nowhere to go. He was held by the side of the ship with Malone's cutlass pressed against his throat.
Sure that his ship was in safe reach Jack turned his attention to where Raven was still sprawled out upon the ground. He lifted her enough to turn her onto her back, then dragged her along the main bridge, propping her against the outer wall of his cabin.
His gaze went over towards the other ship, just about aware of a stirring groan coming from the woman. The flames of the ship grew higher and spread wider, then what was expected happened. It triggered the gunpowder, setting off a huge explosion.
“No!!” A yell came from Raven, the explosion bringing her back into conciousness. She brought herself up to her feet as quick as she possibly could, and tried to make some sort of dash towards the edge of the ship.
She was stopped however as Jack grabbed her about the waist, keeping her struggling form against his own. “Let me go Sparrow!!”
“It's gone lass..... there's nothin' anyone can do.” He spoke against her ear, trying to be as soothing and apologetic as possible.
He expected her to start weeping on the spot, but instead her struggles stopped and she went silent staring out as parts of her ship landed into the sea. What crew had remained on board the vessel would have been killed instantly, while others that had dived into the sea would have been killed by falling fiery debris.
“My ship.....”
