Tangled limbs, tangled sheets,
they were all wrapped up in smooth cotton and each other, sea green dress and
best shirt discarded on the cabin floor, nothing between them now but the
emerald she wore around her neck.
It had been as if they had never been together before, somehow pure, though
they were anything but innocents and running through it all had been joy and
trust. She had wept even as she moved under his hands but it had been tears of
a different kind and Jack had kissed them away, his own eyes perhaps a little
brighter than usual.
So now they lay on the big bed, legs still entwined, talking softly, about the
storm, about where they were to go next, no need to keep sailing around, now
that Maia had found what it was that she had been searching for. A silent thank
you to Calypso even as she thought about it, a brief image of the Goddess in
her mind, smiling, a gentleness there that Maia had seldom seen before and then
she was gone. Leaving the Star of the Sea and Wicked Jack to soft conversation,
soft kisses that became more intent, want and need rising again, so much to be
shared.
Finally it was hunger of a different sort that pulled them from the bed, the
lunch long ignored, cheese unpleasantly warm, bread hard and stale. Jack pulled
pants on over his nakedness.
“Come on luv”
“Where?” but she was scrambling from the bed, bending to pick up the dress from
the floor, slipping it over her head.
“The galley…food, some rum” a tilt of his head “and I have a mind to look at
the stars.”
“Is it that late?” She had paid no mind to the passing of the hours, paid no
heed to what had been going on around her. Another thing that was different,
wary caution so long practiced abandoned; she truly did have no idea of the
time and was astonished to find the sun well gone, the moon rising over the
still black water.
The crew were scarce, a single silhouette at the wheel, Anna Maria who muttered
a good night to Jack, flashed a grin to Maia as she walked past, a murmured
“nice dress” and a wink, maybe not everyone was so dead set against her. A
grateful smile in return and then she was gone and it was just Maia and Jack.
He was swinging on the wheel, arms crossing over each other as he turned to
look at her, gleeful boy still evident on the face of the man.
“So where do you want to go Star of the Sea” he swung around and she felt her
heart stutter, he was so alive, so vibrant, so there, real, she did not answer
but drank him in, wanting to imprint this one perfect moment in her memory
forever.
“Do you have a hankering for Hong Kong or perhaps a sighing for Singapore” he
grinned a gleam of white and gold “what say you we get new tattoo’s? She
grabbed the hand that he stretched out to her and he pulled her to stand in
front of him, placing her hands on the wheel, his hands on top of hers. Resting
his head on her shoulder, lips against her ear. “Or what say we sail on home to
Tortuga and just rest up a while. I have a house there you know.”
She would have nodded and said yes if he had suggested them sailing to the end
of the world, but she agreed anyway, her breath catching in her throat as his
lips brushed against the side of her neck, one kiss before he drew away.
“Rum?”
They ate and drank under the stars; the only sound that of the softly creaking
sails and the timbers of the Black Pearl shifting beneath them. And though she
ate as slowly as she could and only sipped at her rum the meal was finished far
too soon and Jack stood to gather the remains.
“Will just check on the lads and be down in a minute” he winked, “you’ll hardly
miss me” one finger trailed down her shoulder and he laid a kiss on the bare
skin.
She stood watching him walk away, watching until he disappeared below, wanting
to stand out under the moon for a while longer. So many times she had stood
under that pale light feeling so very alone, it seemed right to have that cool
face witness her happy.
It was the muttering that broke into her contemplation. Grumbled words, that
stopped then started again, mumbled curses that had her turning to face the man
that had emerged from the shadows, his face was shadowed too, just like his
heart, the last her own voice whispering in her head.
“You” he seemed startled when he saw her, fists clenching and a deep breath
before walking towards her, words battering at her “Why don’t you just let him
be?” his voice was harsh “I know your sort, always with plans, always with
using people for your purposes. Jack should not be used.”
Her voice was gentle “I am not going to take him away. His place is here.” He
talked over her, his voice getting louder more indignant. “Using people in your
own schemes, wild goose chases, harebrained quests” his voice was trembling,
with anger, indignation “you will not be taking our Captain like that, not
while I draw..”
“Mr Gibbs” her voice was firm, stern and she pushed a finger against his chest
“are you going to listen to me”
He stuttered, spluttered, tried not to look at her, or her finger and she stood
waiting until he finally nodded, meeting her eyes.
“I said that I am not taking him anywhere. You have nothing to fear from me.”
“And your mistress, do you truly know what Tia Dalma’s schemes are?”
She was cautious now, testing her thoughts before she spoke, asking, seeking
before saying. “She honours the agreements that Jack has already made.”
“and you think I be fool enough to trust that”
“I give you my word” she met his eyes, though he flinched and tried to look
away.
“I will not take him away from the Pearl.”
He stared at her for a long time, finally speaking “fine words missy but I have
seen Tia Dalma’s work before…” he turned away from her, picking his way over
the deck.
She sighed, there was not anything more that she could do.
“I told him that” the voice behind her made her turn, Anna Maria standing in
the stairs, “but he would not listen”
“He is all they have”
“Aye he is a good man”
There was not much more to be said but quiet good nights, Anna returning to her
place at the wheel, Maia making her way back to Jack.
He was already in the cabin, turning as she pushed the door open.
“I was talking to Gibbs” an answer to the question in his eyes.
A not quite sigh “he is nothing but persistent, an admirable trait under other
circumstances”
“He does not want you to leave”
“Eh?” Jack’s face was puzzled “leave what?”
“Him, The Pearl, the crew…forcing you to do my bidding” she waggled her fingers
at him “sea witch sort of stuff…”
He snorted “superstitious fools” though he would have a word with them all in
the morning, not quite a talking to; just a show of normalcy, pirates being far
more sensitive than what they ever got credit for.
“Can we stop talking about Gibbs now” a slightly pained expression “twas not
really what I had in mind when I suggested we rendezvous”
“And exactly what did you have in mind Jack” her eyes were sparkling, her voice
teasing. He grinned; he liked this Maia, a lot. He pounced, she shrieked,
giggling as he tossed her over his shoulder.
