“Seems strange doesn’t it.” Holmes said as he and Watson walked with Katherine. “Usually you’re coming to our house to speak with us, not the other way around.” “I can assure you, Mr. Holmes that the ban on your presence on the estate is lifted, and you and Dr. Watson are welcome to come by any time you wish.” She said as they walked into the study. “Will you be going abroad now?” Watson asked, “With Lord Hawks as you had planned?” She half smiled, and shook her head. “I can’t. There’s too much work to be done here. All the spells and rituals that Henry insisted on performing from those forbidden texts opened a Pandora’s box. I’ve got to stay and set things back the way they were before he came into power.” Walking around the desk she opened a drawer and took out a script before closing it again and approaching the two men. “I can never thank you enough for all of the help you’ve given me, and all that you’ve put up with.” She said holding the paper out to Holmes and Watson. The Inspector took it and unfolding it, rather impressed with what he saw. So much so that he was struck speechless, a very rare occurrence indeed that there wasn’t something he could say. “This is quite the sum.” He said clearing his throat a bit. “You kept my children safe, and helped me more times then it’s possible to count. Since you’ve yet to give me a bill, I had to come up with a number myself.” She said. Holmes turned and handed it to Watson so he could be just as amazed then walked passed Katherine towards the desk, where something had caught his eye. “Katherine . . . this is so much . . . it’s too much . . .” Watson said in disbelief. “It’s far from enough,” She began. “All the time and energy you’ve put into my unusual case all these years? At least the two of you needn’t worry about having a roof over your head for quite a while. It’s the least I can do.” Holmes inspected the jar on the desk and then reached out picking it up and turning it around as he studied it. It was sealed shut, wielded it seemed never intended to be open again. Katherine turned seeing him and walked towards him. ”Can I assume what or whom this is?” He asked. Katherine held out her hands and took it from him with a nod. “All that’s left of Lord Henry Blackwood’s person.” She said a tone of remorse in her voice for what she had done. “You were there, Inspector. You know the extent his body was destroyed before being cremated. Why do you look so surprised?” “I didn’t think you’d want to keep it. Ashes or no ashes, I’m surprised to see it here of all places.” He admitted. She shook her head a little as she held the urn close. “He can’t hurt us anymore, Mr. Holmes. Even with his reputation and countless evil deeds . . . he’s still the Lord of this house and I can’t help but be grateful for all that he gave me.” She walked over and put it on the mantel over the fireplace of the study, underneath a large painting of Henry that had been done several years ago. “How are you fairing these days Katherine?” Watson asked as she had begun to show enough that it was difficult hiding it. “Better.” She said turning back towards the two men. “The doctors think that my emotional state played some part in the illness that I felt before when I was with child. Although I still do occasionally have spells, the pass quickly.” “So where do you go from here, then?” Holmes asked looking at her. “You and your children no longer have anything to fear. With Blackwood deceased, I can’t imagine the church has any reason to pursue you further.” “Everything that was his is now mine until the boys come of age.” She said. “Even the order. He made me his priestess. Lord Coward would have been his successor had he still been alive, but since he’s not it fell to me. I am head of the order now, and I intend to turn it back from the dark path Henry took it down, to what it was originally meant to be. A force to be used for the benefit of mankind and it’s progress, not to enslave it.” “That is more than anyone could hope for.” Watson said with a smile. “Well, we must be going. We promised LaStrade that we would meet him at a crime scene to see what aid we can offer.” Holmes said. Katherine smiled and began walking with them to the door. “I suppose we won’t be seeing as much of you now that Blackwood is gone.” He said. Katherine’s steps slowed as she looked at the two men with a puzzled expression. Watson and Holmes glanced at each other not certain what that meant. “Gone?” She said reaching for the handle of the door and opening it before looking at them again. “Yes. We all bore witness to his ‘burial’ so to speak. You needn’t worry about his resurrection like before. He won’t be back to bother you or your children again.” Holmes explained. The two men stepped outside into the hallway as Katherine walked them to the door. “Good day to you gentlemen. Have a safe journey home.” She said with a smile. Watson was still unsure about the reaction she’d shown to what Holmes had said, and stopped by the door looking at her. “You will be alright, won’t you?” He asked. “He is gone now, there’s no mistaking his departure this time.” “Doctor,” She said, “I know that he will never harm us again. We are safe from that, but Henry never left.” Holmes and Watson looked at each other not sure what she meant. “There’s a good chance that he never will.” Holmes just looked at her, seeing the strange serenity on her face, and the way it she said that like it was just a normal bit of conversation. He glanced at Watson who was just as puzzled by her demeanor before the two men exited the house to continue on their way. Katherine waved goodbye and stepped back inside closing the door. She sighed softly and turned back seeing a shadowy figure standing near the staircase. Katherine was very familiar with the form, and the eyes that were the only clear part that could be seen. She walked towards it and went up a few steps as the eyes followed her and she paused looking at it again. “We truly are bound together aren’t we.” She said thinking it so ironic. “I told you that we would pay for our sins.” She rested her hand on the banister but paused a moment before she began up the stairs again. “Welcome to purgatory, Henry. I doubt that either of us will enjoy our stay.”
