He need not have wondered how
she would know that he was ready, one final tug at his shirt and then he turned
towards the door and she was there. Her back against the wooden panels she was
watching him with those clear green eyes, what once would have been unsettling
now making his breath catch.
They were about to do something, enter into something that he did not really
understand, but whatever it was he was ready and he was willing to commit to
it. It was not marriage, not a contract, nothing that would mean anything to
anyone but them, but it was more than he had ever committed to or been prepared
to commit to. He was ready.
“Jack” she seemed to glide again, bare of feet, seeming to not touch the wooden
floor but to somehow float across the room towards him. He stepped forward, to
meet her, to rest his hands on her shoulders.
“I have something for you, Star of the Sea,” he swallowed “Maia.”
The emerald, warm from his hand, now on a thick gold chain, he let it drop
between his fingers so that it dangled between them, swinging backwards and
forwards, like a pendulum. She reached up to rest her hand on his and the deep
green stone became still, hanging motionless before it seemed to tremble and
then began to swing in ever expanding circles, clockwise, wider, bigger, faster
and faster.
She smiled, that enigmatic smile that had once infuriated him, looking up at
him, the emerald green of her eyes almost the same shade as the swinging stone.
“A yes but then I did not need to ask.”
“I would give this to you. Will you take it?”
“Are you sure Jack, really sure?”
He did not need to think, he was sure, it was for her, it always had been. “If
you will allow me to gift it to you?” Her smile made something in his chest
flutter, his heart perhaps “will you accept this Maia?” formal words, but it
needed them, he could be formal with the best of them, and this was the time.
“I will Jack Sparrow, willingly.”
Silence as he placed the thick chain around her neck, arms reaching around to
fasten the clasp, one hand lifting the heavy stone so that it rested in the
shadowy valley between her breasts. She caught his hand, raising it to her
lips, to kiss his palm, to kiss the emerald ring, then her free hand lifted the
pendant from its resting place. Knowing without knowing he did what was
required he reached for her hand, touching his lips to her palm, then to the
stone. As she had. Silence and then he felt something, a gentle throbbing in
the jewel that rested on his finger, like a tiny heart beat. He looked to her
and her eyes were wide with surprise, her hand closing over the green stone.
Something that she had not expected. A flicker of delight, that he had
surprised her, a grin he tried to suppress but that he knew that she had seen,
or felt. The tiny heartbeat increasing so that it felt as though his whole hand
was throbbing and then as suddenly as it had begun it ceased.
The knock on the door startled them both, they jumped.
“Your lunch Captain” the voice boomed through the door, it was Gibbs and Jack
rolled his eyes, he had not asked for lunch, he had not thought of lunch. Gibbs
deciding the he needed to be rescuing the Captain from himself again.
“Come in Mr Gibbs” words that were a sigh.
The door creaked open and the first mate appeared with a laden tray, his eyes
narrowing when he saw Maia.
“I only bought enough for one” his voice, his tone pointed, a not so polite
suggestion that the sea witch should leave.
“Just put it here” Jack gestured at the big table, pushing aside the maps that
littered the surface, Gibbs sucked his breath in as he inched past Maia, as if
he was ensuring that under no circumstances would he brush against her. He did
not look at her face, but looked downwards, moving around her, then almost
stumbling as he caught sight of the emerald resting against pale skin.
The tray clattered on to the table, Jack having to lean forward to steady it.
“Captain…you didn’t give that…its worth a kings ransom…Mother of God Jack are
you mad….” All whispered urgently as he grabbed on to Jack’s arm.
Jack sensed rather than heard Maia’s quick intake of breath, felt the sharp
stab of pain that Gibbs words had caused and he felt a quick surge of anger.
“Be quiet sir” his voice was sharp and there was sudden silence.
“Jack”
“Enough, you may go now”
With more than one backwards glance his first mate left the room,
surreptitiously but still noticeably sketching a blessing over his heart as he
turned to shut the door.
Jack moved almost before the door had closed, that sharp pain still stinging
through his own chest, arms reaching for her to pull her in close to him.
“How do you bear it?” words whispered into her hair, the pain he felt, her pain
suddenly being overwhelmed by something else, wonder, surprise but it was
easier, softer and she relaxed against him, into him. A sense of her letting
him comfort her, allowing him to want to protect, something that would have
been unthinkable before, she would have seen it as an admission of weakness.
But not now.
“Are you hungry luv?” the word said slightly differently from usual, no mockery
there, gentleness instead.
“Not for food Jack” she leaned away to place her hands on either side of his
face. “You saved me”
“Probably unnecessarily” he had thought about that as he had bathed that no
doubt she had resources that would have got her down from that mast without his
intervention “flying down would have done in the crew once and for all though”
he was trying to make light of it, trying to make her laugh. He knew what she
meant, could feel the intent radiating from her into him and it frightened him.
That she would think that he had saved her from herself.
“Jack….” She was insisting that he look at her that he acknowledge what she
meant.
“I know Star of the Sea” he rubbed a hand over his face “just promise me that
you won’t be telling too many.” A grin “reputation and all” but his smile was a
gentle one as he traced a finger down the side of her face. “Saving not being
one sided eh?”
“No and is not all done yet” words an almost whisper that sent a sudden chill
through him, he wanted to ask what she meant but the surge of fear that had
coursed through her and then him stopped him. That was not for now. Now was for
now, whatever came after was in the future.
“So you were saying something about being hungry?”
“Aye Jack” her hands reached to tangle in his hair, trinkets clinking and she
pulled his face towards her “starving…”
