Chapter Twenty - In God he trusts
Ink dark sails billowed and slapped in the brisk wind as The Black Pearl sailed
out of Tortuga, as was customary Jack stood at the wheel feet planted shoulder
width apart, hat firmly on his head, squinting slightly in the bright light.
Bella had been standing behind him until a few minutes earlier when he had sent
her aloft. She had been following him around since they had boarded and it was
making him jumpy. He heard a light step behind him and sighed, he turned
expecting to see that once more she had defied him. He swallowed the reprimand
that had been on the tip of his tongue, it was Will.
“Ahoy mate” he grinned; he had noticed that Young Turner and Bella were
avoiding one another; it was a little strange, something must have happened. He
would speak to her later, Bella was accomplished at bearing a grudge and much
though it tickled him it was not right for her to be so upset with poor
William. It was odd that the lad seemed to be just as annoyed with her though.
“Jack” Will nodded at him, his eyes scanning the horizon as well “do you think
that it worked?”
Jack shrugged “time will tell mate, time will tell.”
Bella had been smuggled on board in a large chest, she had been furious about
that, but Jack had rather enjoyed shutting the lid on his swearing sister. He
felt that it went someway to rebalancing things - the interview with McGuiness
had been uncomfortable, Jack did not like to apologise for anything, but this
had been unavoidable. Angus was a good honest man and aside from the fact that
Bella’s dishonesty was insulting Jack had needed his observations, the details
of that Spanish ship, McGuiness may have noticed something that Bella missed.
He grinned at the recollection, she had throw a real tantrum when she had heard
his plan for getting her on board, Bella needed to learn to swallow her pride
at times, he had told her that as he had blown a kiss and shot home the bolts,
ignoring the sound of her pounding fists.
“So when are you going to tell her?” Will asked looking up at the crows nest,
he could see Bella staring down at them, he could not see her expression from
here but no doubt she was glaring. They had barely exchanged two words since
she had knocked on Selena’s door. After the incident in the hallway things had
been tense but now she seemed to think he was somehow responsible for her
undignified arrival on the Pearl, it was unfortunate that Jack had been unable
to persuade her into the trunk on her own, more unfortunate that Will had just
happened to walk past at that precise time. He rubbed his jaw; she had caught
him with a fist, or perhaps a foot in that struggle. He glared back, it was
childish and she would be unable to see him but Will really did not like her,
for the trouble that she was causing Jack and he was still angry about that
conversation, who was she to judge him, she had no idea of the situation with
Elizabeth. Holier than thou judgemental naïve little prig, that was what he had
muttered through clenched teeth for days. Every time he saw her he bristled,
the sooner that Jack put his plan into action the better as far as he was
concerned.
“When we are far enough from shore that she can’t swim for it” Jack sighed “I
will have to put a guard on the boats I suppose, she is likely to steal one of
them.” Jack made a face “it has been pleasant these last few days, she is a
sweet thing when she thinks she is getting her own way.”
Silence for a while and Jack waved at a small fishing vessel that was anchored
in the channel, the two men crewing her stood hoisting
battered hats, returning his greeting. The Black Pearl was for a fleeting
second alongside them, before she streamed past. Jack did not look back or he
would have noticed that they immediately set to work, one pulling up the
anchor, the other hoisting the net from the depths, hand over hand, heedless of
the fish that spilled into the ocean.
Jack and Will stood watching the crew working, coiling ropes and scrubbing
decks. Jack drummed his fingers on the smooth wood looking sideways at Will
several times before he spoke.
“What is bothering you mate..?Is it Bella, she seems a little annoyed with you
about something. She’s impetuous like that, great loves and great hates that is
Bella”
Will nodded not trusting himself to speak.
Jack looked at him one eye half closed, obviously there was more to it, Will’s
jaw was tight and he was avoiding Jack’s eyes “what’s she done mate, I can tell
that you are angry about something and every time my sister gets near you, you
are clenching your teeth.”
Will turned to look at him, sometimes he forgot how Jack noticed the little
things, he always seemed so caught up in himself, in the enjoyment of the
moment but he observed filing things away in that complicated mind of his to
mull on later.
“Your sister seems to think that Elizabeth and I are still to be married, she
did not approve of Selena”
“Aaah” Jack tugged at his moustache “well I never told her why you joined the
crew, no ones business and certainly not Bella’s.”

It was almost midnight when Jack called
Bella into his cabin. She had been dozing in her bunk, Jack had put her in with
Anna Maria the second mates room was not large but they were making do. She had
gone to her room just after supper and she and Anna had talked for quite some
time before wishing one another goodnight. She had been on the verge of sleep
when the young lad had knocked at the door saying that the captain wished to
speak with her.
She had grumbled all the way from her cabin to Jack’s, why he could not speak
to her in daylight she did not know.
“Jack you wanted me?” she was polite though she had to grit her teeth, he was
Captain here and that meant that she had to respect him as such.
“Bella” he waved a hand at the crates in the corner, he already had a bottle
resting at his elbow on the table “get yourself a bottle luv”
“No thank you” she crossed her arms and waited, Jack seemed a bit restless,
fiddling with his moustache, tapping his compass.
“Well at least sit down then, you are making my neck sore having to look up at
you like this”
She sat somewhat ungraciously “what do you want Jack – it is the middle of the
night?”
“Well Bella me darling, several things, firstly you must stop being so snippy
with William Turner, even though it is none of your business he is not
betrothed to Elizabeth Turner, she married some English dandy so don’t be going
around being a sanctimonious prig. Oh and thirdly we are going to land just
north of Port Royal where you will be taking up
residence in the convent, you should be safe enough there. Right that is all
off you go now, sleep well.” He put his head down studying the map, intently.
The chair shot back with a screech as Bella leapt to her feet “a convent have
you lost your mind?”
“Not at all Isabella, safest place I can think of, I will not have you running
around and getting killed.” Jack stood up to face her “this is not up for
discussion that is where you are going. Now go to bed.”
“No Jack, you cannot do this to me.”
“I can and I will”
“No, Jack No” her voice was rising; fists were clenched at her side “I will
just run away, you can’t lock me up like that.”
“Already thought of that Bella and there will be no running away, the Mother
Superior is a friend of mine, she knows all about you and your little tricks.”
“I am an adult Jack, not a child.”
“Well act like one then” his voice was blunt “stop screaming like a fishwife,
this is what is happening, and no matter how much you shout and cry you are
going to go there. Not forever Bella just until we can find somewhere safe.”
.
“No! I will not”
“Yes you will”
Jack was so calm, it was not him that was going to be shut away, anger rushed
up through her, she wanted to hit something to break things. Bella gave a snarl
of rage reaching for the closest thing to her, her hand closed on the bottle of
rum that Jack had been sipping from. Without thinking she threw the bottle at
him.
“Bella not the rum” both hands in front of his face Jack ducked as the glass
smashed against the wall behind him the rum running to the floor in a golden
stream.
“I don’t care about the bloody rum” she growled looking for something else to
throw. Jack risked a glance at the crate in the corner it was well out of
reach, he lowered his hands “you can shout and yell and throw things all you
want Bella; I am not changing my mind.”
She wanted to hiss that she hated him, it was on the tip of her tongue, but if
she said those words they could never be taken back, so instead she kicked the
chair out of the way “Jack you would die if someone locked you up – this
convent is no more than a prison” head high she stalked from the room slamming
the door so hard that the frame shuddered and cracked.

A small fishing boat hugged the land as it crept from cove to cove; it was past
midnight when it quietly slipped into the bay that
was its final destination. The pretty beach was not far from Tortuga, but beauty was not
the reason that they sought it, the water was deep, and it was sheltered, steep
headlands affording concealment for the three ships that gently rocked at
anchor.
“Who goes there…name yerselves” the voice was harsh in the night and the
fishermen heard the click of a pistol.
“Hold fire mate, we have news for the Cap’n, Jack Sparrer has left Tortuga….”
