Chapter 21
They left
Hopewell around midday on the next day. Jack had met Terence and Mr McMillan
for a last time at the local bank and they had arranged the money transfer to
the bank in Savannah. When they said Goodbye, Terence hugged Jack. “Will we ever
see you again?”
Jack
sighed. “I don´t know.. I really don´t know if I will ever return…”
Angus
McMillan patted his shoulder. “You are always welcome at your old house.”
They drove
away on the carriage and Jack chuckled. “He tried to declare me dead and now he
says I am always welcome… Ah, forget it…”
Will
smiled. “After you paid Canterpury the price for the ship, what do you want to
do with the rest of the money?”
Jack
grinned. “Spend it for food, drink and pleasurable company… Naa, I´m joking. It
will stay on the bank. I will…” he sighed. “Call me mad, but I want to find out
to whom the “Endeavour” belonged and want to send money to him. Anonymous of
course.”
Will kissed
his cheek. “That´s not mad. That´s a good idea.”
“And the
rest will be enough that we…” Jack smiled. “I don´t know, maybe one day, when
we are tired of sailing the seven seas, maybe we can buy a small house on the
coast… That is, if you don´t get fed up with me in the meantime…”
Will
stopped the carriage, looked at Jack.
“I will
never leave you. I would love to grow old with you…” he said huskily.
And
although Jack tried to hide it, Will saw the tears of joy in his eyes.
The closer
they came to Savannah, the more they were both looking forward to get to the
“Discovery”. Everything had worked out well. They had the money, soon they
would be at sea again.
But
something troubled Will. He could not name it, could not define it. It was a
dark fear, hidden in the back of his mind. He had felt it for the first time
when they had left Hopewell.
It was the
fear that something could go wrong in the last minute. That maybe everything
had worked out too well. He tried to hide it from Jack as much as he could.
But of
course Jack noticed it. He caressed Will´s hand when they crossed the city border
of Savannah. “What´s wrong, Will…” he said softly. “I feel something troubles
you.”
Will shook
his head. “I can´t explain it… It is…” he sighed. “Don´t worry. As soon as we
are on the ship…” He tried to laugh. “My nerves are overreacting.”
Jack looked
at him doubtfully.
Phileas
Canterbury was so happy to see them again, he squeezed them so hard that they
both gasped. “How wonderful that you are back… And you really sold your
plantation?”
Jack
laughed. “Yes… I´d still rather have a ship than a house…”
They agreed
that they would drive to the bank first. There they set up and signed the
contract of sale. Canterbury shook Jack´s hand. “The `Discovery` is yours ,
Jack. Treat her good, she deserves it.” Jack breathed in deeply. “I will. I
promise.”
They drove
back to the harbour. Jack had a big smile all over his face. “Will, I… Want to
arrange surprise, but, well, if you see it, it´s not a surprise anymore. So why
don´t you wait at the tavern here and I´ll be back in... About half an hour?”
Will raised
his eyebrows, gave Jack a curious look. “I love surprises! Okay…”
He sat down
at a table in the tavern, chuckled. Wondered what the surprise would be…
“Jack
Sparrow… He´s next…”
Will held
his breath. Had he dreamed it? Had someone just said “Jack Sparrow?”
There it
was again. The fear. This time it stabbed him like a knife.
Cautiously
he turned around.
Two men
were sitting at the next table. A long list and several drawings were spread
over it.
“See, we
have Sam Blackbeard on the list… I heard he was seen in Havanna about a week
ago… You can cross out Bartholomew Roberts, he was killed in Africa… And here´s
the portrait of Jack Sparrow… There´s a good bounty set on his head, dead or
alive… And I really met someone a few days ago who said he saw someone here in
Savannah who looked a bit like him…”
Will looked
at the drawing. It was unmistakeably Jack.
His mind
was racing. What to do, what to do… Soon Jack would come into the tavern, he
had to warn him… What else could he do…
He took a
deep breath. His hands were shaking. He tried to still them. The next moments
would be important. Essential.
He walked
over to the table where the two men were sitting, gave them a casual smile.
“Gentlemen, did I just hear the name `Jack Sparrow`?”
They both
looked up. “You heard right. We are working for the government, trying to get
our hands on the most dangerous pirates. Do you have any information that is
helpful?”
Will sat
down. “So it is… I came back with a ship from Costa Rica a few days ago… And,
well, I can assure you that Jack Sparrow is dead… There was lethal fever raging
and it killed about twenty people. Among them Jack Sparrow. I can confirm it
was him.”
His heart
was beating so loud that he feared the two men would hear it. He was sure he
did not sound convincing at all.
One of them
scratched his head. “And how can you be so sure?”
Will leant
back, hoping it would look relaxed.
“I saw his
dead body. He had a sparrow tattooed on his right arm… Lots of scars on the
left… Two scars on his chest from bullets… A moon tattooed beneath his navel…
You surely agree that I can only know this from seeing his dead body…”
He had to
hide his hands under the table. Their trembling would have given him away. He
thought of the moments where he really had seen all the details of Jack´s body…
The two men
looked at each other. Shrugged their shoulders. “Sounds convincing…”
One of them
took the drawing of Jack. “So I think we can rip…”
A huge hand
slapped Will´s shoulder. “Aye, Will, found some company?”
Will went
pale. He turned his head and saw Phileas Canterbury standing behind him.
“I… Yes…
But I think I really should go now…”
But it was
too late. The grip on his shoulder tightened.
Canterbury
had seen the drawing.
He heard
him draw a deep breath.
“So… Don´t you
want to introduce us?”
Will
pressed his hands together under the table. Everything went wrong. Everything
was falling to pieces. He looked at the two men with flickering eyes.
“Sorry, I…
Don´t know your names. This is Captain Canterbury… You said you are working for
the government, hunting down pirates… And I just…” He looked with large,
pleading eyes at Canterbury. “The gentlemen mentioned a Jack Sparrow and I told
them that I saw… Saw him in Costa Rica, dead…”
The two men
looked at Canterbury. One of them put the drawing back on the table. “My name
is Sullivan, this is Mr. Harding… Captain Canterbury? You both were sailing
together?”
Canterbury
nodded. “Yes, Mr. Turner was on my ship.”
Sullivan´s
face lit up. “Then you saw Jack Sparrow, too? You can confirm he´s dead?”
Canterbury
took the portrait. Looked at it. Looked at Will. Looked at the portrait again.
“Yes.” He
said quietly. “I saw him.”
He looked
at Will again.
“And yes. I
can confirm he is dead.”
He smiled.
“If I knew there was such a high bounty set on him, I would have brought his
head with us!”
Sullivan
raised his hands apologising. “Yes, I am afraid we can´t give away the money
only for the news… But well, we know now…”
And he took
the drawing, ripped it apart. Then he pushed back his chair. “Come, Harding...
We still have to travel to Charleston tonight…”
They said
goodbye and left.
Will´s body
began to shake uncontrollably. Canterbury squeezed his arm.
“Hold it.”
he hissed. “They are not outside yet.”
Will looked
up, watched the two men make their way through the crowd. Then they were gone.
Canterbury
pulled him up. “Come. We can´t risk they meet Jack outside.”
Will did
not remember how he made it to the door. His legs did not seem to obey him, he
stumbled, nearly fell. But somehow they left the tavern. Saw Harding and
Sullivan walk down the street. Canterbury nodded. “Okay… Jack will come from
the other direction. He was back at the hotel. I think we are safe.”
That was
when Will broke down. A sob escaped his lips, his knees nearly gave in. He
leant against the wall, closed his eyes. “Thank you…” he whispered. “I was so
afraid…”
Canterbury
took a deep breath.
“Okay,
Will. I want the truth now. Whom have I sold my ship to? And where did the
money really come from?”
Will opened
his eyes again. His face was white as a piece of paper.
“Yes… Jack
was a pirate… The ship we were on was not the `Atlantis`, it was the
`Endeavour´. We were not merchant sailors, we stole the ship but… Everything
else is true. The plantation was Jack´s . And the money is really from the
sale. And… All we wanted was to start a new life…”
Suddenly
Jack was at his side, looking alarmed and worried. “God, Will… You look
terrible… What has happened?”
Canterbury
looked around. “Come. To the ship.”
They sat in
the Captain´s cabin for hours. And Jack told Canterbury everything. Well, not
everything – of course he left out some delicate details of his relationship
with Jonathan, of his relationship with Will. But he told him the story of his
life. Then he and Will looked at Canterbury, anxiously waiting what he would
say.
In the end
Canterbury got up. He shook his head, smiled. “It might be crazy, but… Once
again… I believe you. And you know why?”
He pointed
at Will. “It was his reaction in the tavern. This panic in his eyes. He did not
look like the cold-blooded accomplice of a dangerous pirate who tried to avoid
that someone blew his cover. He looked like someone who was afraid that…” He
grinned. “That someone would kill his beloved family. His new life.”
Will nodded.
“That´s how I felt…” he whispered. “We wanted this new life so much…”
Canterbury
smiled. “I think no one can destroy it now anymore.”
He blew out
the candles. “You should go to sleep now. The past days must have been quite
straining.”
Jack and
Will stood up.
Jack
swallowed hard. “I know we surely said it a dozen times in the last hours but…
Once again – Thank you.”
“Oh wait…”
Canterbury looked around. “This is your ship now, I mean… This means, the
Captain´s cabin is yours now, too…”
Jack shook
his head, smiled. “From Boston on. But until you leave this ship, we will sleep
where we always slept.”
They set
sails for Boston on the next day, after some craftsmen had brought huge wrapped
items on board in the morning. Jack forbid Will to look at them. “It´s the
surprise, remember?”
Now that
they knew they would soon be able to sleep in the Captain´s cabin, they did not
mind sleeping in the crew cabin and in the shanty anymore. They enjoyed the
days at sea, their anticipation rising.
Then
finally they reached Boston.
Busy days
were ahead of them- they went with Canterbury to the University where he
introduced them as the new owners of the “Discovery”. They had meetings where
the route and the time table for the new expedition was planned and set.
“I never
thought I would set a foot in a University in my life…” Jack whispered to Will.
Canterbury
organised a huge coach, drawn by four horses, where he brought most of his
personal belongings on to be carried to his hometown. He left most of the
furniture in the cabin as he did not want to take it with him, but when the
ship carpenter began to disassemble the bed, Will nudged Jack. “Look, he is
taking his bed with him, means we need to get one for ourselves…”
Jack
grinned. “I don´t think so…”
And to his surprise
Will saw how the wrapped items from Savannah were carried upstairs from the
storage area. And then he recognised what it was. He gasped.
“That´s…
The bed from the hotel!”
Jack
nodded, chuckled. “We were the first ones to sleep in it anyway so I thought we
could as well have it for ourselves forever… So I went back to the hotel and
bought it…”
He turned
to Will, smirked. “You like it?”
Will´s
sparkling eyes said it all.
They went
to town to shop for some things they still needed – clothing, accessories for
the cabin. And they bewildered the young shop assistant in a store for riding
accessories by choosing two whips, bending them in their hands, looking at each
other meaningfully, constantly ignoring his questions if they needed them for a
riding- or a coach horse, if they were beginners or experienced riders…
Then they
went to a carpentry (as Jack did not want to give this order to the ship
carpenter, to avoid curious looks and questions) and Jack ordered a paddle.
Will looked with great interest at the tables and chairs that were on display
so that nobody could see his flushed face when he heard Jack tell the carpenter
about size, thickness, material… His heart was pounding when Jack said “And
please make sure it is polished with care, the wood has to be very smooth…
Shining…”
A few
banknotes persuaded the carpenter to start with the job right away.
They walked
on through the streets and suddenly Will stopped. He looked into the window of
a dark, small store. Colourful drawings were on display. Drawings of dragons,
hearts, curvy girls…
Jack
laughed. “That´s a tattoo parlour… You want a tattoo?”
Will turned
around, looked at him. “Yes.”
And Jack
saw that Will was serious about it.
He stared
at him. “How come? And where? And what?”
Will
smiled.
And a short
while later he laid on his back on a wooden bench while a huge man with
countless tattoos was bent over his waist, a needle in his hand, a small dish
filled with dark ink beside him.
Jack was
sitting at Will´s side, looking at him all the time.
And he saw
how a small sun began to appear near Will´s navel. A sun that, as Will had
whispered to him in front of the tattoo parlour, would meet the moon on Jack´s
body when their bodies would be pressed close together. A thought that made
Jack´s head spin and made his heart ache with love.
Small beads
of sweat appeared on Will´s forehead.
“Does it
hurt?” Jack mouthed.
Will´s eyes
were half closed. Slowly he nodded.
Jack´s dark
eyes were gleaming. “Good…?”
Will
smiled, nodded again.
Later, back
outside, they both had to wipe the sweat from their temples.
“You can´t
believe how exciting it was to watch you…” Jack whispered.
Will
laughed silently.
“I can only
return the compliment…”
He pressed Jack´s
hand. “Did yours hurt so much, too, back then when you got it?”
Jack
grinned. “Yeah… But I had no one at that time to watch me and… Enjoy it with
me…”
They
crossed the street to go back to the carpenter to pick up their special order.
Before they
opened the door, Jack turned around to Will.
“What do
you think – the next time we are in a harbour, I think of a another tattoo...”
“…and I can
watch?”
They
exchanged a long, deep look.
One hour
later they returned to the ship, their arms full of packages and parcels.
They had a
party in the evening that lasted until dawn, with lots of food, whiskey, wine
and songs. It was a very emotional Good-bye when Phileas Canterbury left the
ship on the next day. They promised to visit him the next time they returned to
the East Coast, and then they stood at the rail, waving until the coach was out
of sight.
Will turned
to Jack. “Captain… de la
Montez? Ready to set
sails?”
Jack
smiled. “Ready.”
Will could not
get enough of watching Jack, seeing the pride in his eyes when he shouted the
first commands to the sailors. He felt how well Jack got along with the crew.
When they reached the open sea they stood at the bow, enjoying the spray on
their faces.
“Now it is
off to the cold…” Jack said. He took Will´s hand. “I have to ask you something…
Would you mind a trip to some warmer regions in the near future, let´s say,
between two missions for the University?”
Will looked
at him. “Sure! What do you have in mind?”
Jack was
silent for a while.
“Our
lawyer… Terence… He said he has heard from a merchant sailor who was in Spain a
few years ago…”
Will
pressed his hand. He understood.
“You want
to look for your mother?”
Jack nodded
slowly.
“I would
never have dared to look for her in the past… With the life I was leading… But
now… I hope she is proud of me now…”
“Jack.. I
don´t know your mother. But I am sure she loves you anyway… No matter what you
are doing.”
Jack´s eyes
were glistening. “I hope so…”
Will
smiled. “I would love to meet her. So, yes… Spain seems like a good plan.”
Silently
they stood at the rail. Will noticed it was getting colder. He saw that a
shiver ran through Jack. He rubbed his back.
“Come… Let´s
go inside. It´s cold out here”, he said softly. “And I want to… Examine… Our
bed.”
Jack
swallowed. Suddenly the cold seemed to be replaced by a heat wave.
“Another
good plan…” he whispered.
