We landed late in the afternoon; Alex called her husband and our parents to give them some idea of what was happening. "Mom wants me to put her on speaker, she's pissed," Alex said looking at me. "Go ahead, mom, we're both listening," I said as I listened.
"Elizabeth Joanne Michin, you didn't listen to a thing your dad and I told you, we begged you not to dig any deeper into this, you came from a bad situation, and I wish you had listened to us." She yelled into the phone. Alex and I looked at each other. "Mom, calm down, and answer me this: What do you know, you're telling me not to dig deeper, it was a bad situation, what do you truly know? Most adoptive parents would want their kids to figure out their past." I said, getting mad right back at her. Before she could answer, I teared up. "Did my bio dad kill my mom, who was Pascow, why is everyone trying to hide things from me, I'm going to go into Ludlow tomorrow, and I'm going to figure this shit out," I said before handing the phone back to Alex and storming off and slamming the bathroom door in our motel room.
I lay awake most of the night, and when I did sleep, I had nightmares of a big yellow house, a huge field, a tree with a tire swing, just then a beautiful grey cat jumped onto the branch of the tree. "Oh, you're a pretty Kitty, what's your name?" I said before the cat jumped down and scurried away from me down the path behind the house. I followed before coming to a stop, there in front of me was an opening with a sign that said "Pet Sematary." Spelled wrong, but that's what it said, the cat turned mean and growled and hissed at me. I woke up screaming, "Church!" Alex was sitting in our motel room, staring at me in fear. "Whose Church, Libby?" Alex said, getting up from her bed and moving towards mine. "I don't know, I had this dream of a yellow house with a tire swing, and I walked towards the tree, and this beautiful cat jumped on a branch. The cat meowed, then took off down a path behind the house. When it stopped, the cat became mean and hissed at me. Which is when I woke up screaming." I said, tearing up.
We slept in shifts the rest of the night. Alex woke me up with her alarm going off at 6:30. We got ready and headed to Ludlow, stopping at a small diner on the outskirts for some breakfast. We took a 2-person table in the corner, the waitress introduced herself as Missy before we ordered coffee and 2 famous breakfast platters. When our food came out, it wasn't Missy who served us, but an entirely different waitress. Once we paid our bill, I left a decent tip for our waitress, and when we walked out, I saw Missy standing against the wall with her face in her hands. I approached her quietly so as not to startle her." Missy, I wanted to leave you a tip." I said as her head whipped towards me. "Thank you, Ellie." She said. "How did you know?" I asked in utter shock. "I can't explain just now, but meet me here at 7:00 tonight and I can and will explain everything to you, I promise." She said before disappearing into the diner.
Alex and I just stared at each other before we got into our rental car, and made our way into Ludlow, and stopped in front of the law office. I made sure I had the letter before exiting the car. "It Got away from him that numb Shit. Where were you when he was playing on the road? You had no right. Daddy!" I heard. "Hey Lib, you, ok? You were spacing out there for a few minutes." Alex said, touching my arm. "Yeah, I'm ok. Just off in my world."
We walked into the law firm and took the elevator to the 2nd floor. I walked up to the front desk. "Hi, I'm Libby Michin. I received a letter from your office last week, and I'm not sure what to make of it," I said, handing her the letter. "Oh, oh my, please have a seat." She said before picking up the phone. "No, she's sitting here in the lobby, what do you want me to do, Ok?" She whispered into the phone before hanging up. "I'm sorry, Miss Michin, that letter was sent to you in error. Just dispose of it, or I can shred it for you." She said, reaching out for the letter. "No, thank you, I'll hang on to it, because something feels very off, a Law firm just doesn't send random letters to people they aren't associated with," I said, looking back at Alex, who looked angry. "Let's go, Lib, you're not going to get anything from these people, it's best we just wait until tonight when we go back to talk to Missy." She said, touching my arm.
We left and went to the town cemetery. "Are you sure you want to do this?" Alex said as she put the car into park. "Yes, I want to see where my parents and baby brother are buried," I said, getting out of the car. We walked into the office building. "Hi, my name is Libby Michin. I was wondering if you could give me the location where the Creed family is buried?" I asked. She stared at me in a startled way. "Let me get my boss. I'm new here, but she should be able to point you in the right direction. "She said, going into the back room. We heard whispering. Yeah, they want the location of the creed plots, what do I tell them?"
Soon, an older lady came out. "You can go on your break, Marie," her supervisor said before dismissing her and turning to us. "I don't understand people. Do you know how many people come to Ludlow every week wanting the location of the Creed family? It's become a huge problem for our city, I would rather not give you the plot numbers. I need you to leave." She said slightly hostile toward us. "Mam, I'm asking because they are my biological parents. I haven't been able to visit them since my little brother died in 1989. I don't remember the location because I was too young, and this is my first time back since my brother's funeral." I said all the color drained from her face. "You're Ellie Creed?" She said her hands started shaking. "Please, I just want to visit my family," I said.
She turned to the filing cabinets and said, "You know your neighbor Jud is buried next to them, right?" "I don't remember much from my childhood before I moved to San Jose when I was 9," I said before she handed me a map. "This will get you where you need to go." She said, rushing us out the door.
We drove through the cemetery and eventually found it. "Alex slows the car down," I said as I saw the headstone that said Creed. "Are you sure you want to do this, This is getting way out of hand, they didn't send the letter from the law firm, the cemetery didn't want to give you the location, something doesn't feel right Lib, maybe mom and dad were right, something seems off, Maybe we should wait." She spoke. "Why wait? These are my parents?" I was a little upset with my sister. "I'm not saying not to visit your family, I would want to do the same thing, but I'm saying wait until we go back and speak to Missy, she knows something, and at least she's willing to tell you more of what we don't know." She said to stop the car and put it in park.
I slowly got out and walked up to Jud's headstone. "I'm sorry, Jud, I don't remember. I'm sorry it took me so long to come back here," I said, looking down at his headstone, noticing the picture. "Do you know what a graveyard is? Well, I guess not. It's a place where the dead speak. No, not right out loud. Their stones speak or their markers. This isn't a scary place, Ellie. It's a place of rest and speaking." I heard. "Hey, Lib, snap out of it. You're starting to scare me. This is the 2nd time this morning that you're out of it. I think we should go back to the motel and get a nap and then go meet Missy at 7:00," Alex said, pulling me into a hug. "Yeah, let's go grab some lunch on the way, and then go back to the motel, and rest until we go meet up with Missy, or should we say screw it and go back to San Jose?" I said. "No, we're not going back to San Jose. I think we need to find out what's going on." She said.
We got back to the motel, and I noticed a car had been following us, not just to the motel, but it had been behind us most of the day, ever since we left the law firm office.
We got to our room, and I looked at Alex. "Did you notice that blue car? It's been following us most of the day since we left the law firm." I said getting a little creeped out. "No, I was paying attention to where we were going,.Did they follow us into the motel parking lot? "She said. "Yeah, they backed in on the far side," I said. "I'll be back, I want to know who it is." She opened the motel room door and walked outside; I followed her quickly as she walked towards the parking lot. When she came back, she looked stumped and confused. "Lib, there was no blue car in the parking lot. Are you sure it was following us all day?" She spoke. "Alex, I'm not crazy, that car followed us from the law firm to the cemetery, to the motel," I said, tears in my eyes. "Ok, I believe you, it's ok, we'll figure out who it is after we go see Missy, but are you sure it was blue?" She said, putting her arm around me. "You're not alone sis, we're going to figure this out, I love you, and although this shit is super creepy, I'm beside you one hundred percent, no matter the outcome, I promise." She said
We ate our lunch, and I quickly fell into a deep sleep. I found myself at the yellow house again. this time, I could feel the heat from the fire across the road., I turned to see Jud's house engulfed in flames. I ran towards the house, but could not get to it, it kept getting farther and farther away from me. Before I knew it, I was standing on the path I had taken the night before. "Wake up, Libby, you've got to wake up," I said to myself, only to realize it wasn't me speaking, but it was Alex, and she was shaking me. I opened my eyes to see her standing over me. "Libby, you were screaming, you couldn't get to the fire, and you were screaming at yourself to wake up." She said, sitting down on the end of the bed.
