My precious gift
Chapter 2 UnwrappingIt was dark. Sarah wanted to move, she urged every part of her body to make some sort of movement. “Shhhh…Don’t move just yet, adjust yourself, feel your surroundings Sarah.” Sarah didn’t know this voice, her mind began to panic as she struggled against the words. Her body started to hurt, she felt like she was in a pool of water, struggling to keep afloat. “Sarah, open your eyes darling.” Said the sweet voice. Sarah didn’t know this voice, but her heart did. Slowly, Sarah opened her eyes. Her vision was blurred, and everything was too bright. Her throat was dry she needed water, she needed her vision to clear. “Where am I?” She finally stammered out. “You are home dear girl.” She didn’t sound like Karen. Sarah’s confusion grew as she struggled to move her hand to her face, rubbing the sleep away. “K-Karen?” There was a pause of silence, Sarah waited for the voice to answer. “No.” It was a stern no, but not quit angry. Sarah shot up, too quickly. Her vision blurred further as she whipped her legs off of the bed she just noticed she was on. “I have to go home, why wont you let me go home…” The figure just barely starting to register is Sarah’s eyes moved closer, clasping a gentle hand on Sarah’s bare shoulder. “My dearest Sarah, You are home. I told you this.” The voice seemed sad, but there was something else, Sarah couldn’t quite register it. Happiness? She wasn’t sure. “You should lay back down, the trip here was hard on you, you fought against it with everything you had. Did you not want to see me my Princess?” Sarah’s eyes adjusted to her own hands sitting on her lap, slowly she tilted her head up. “…Mom?” She looked into her haunting green orbs, there was a smile on Helen’s face, and she looked so happy she could cry. “Rest now my princess.” Sarah whole world became black.
“You cannot keep him from her, your majesty. The deal has been made, you must send notice at once. Or I fear for your safety.” The voice was new, a man. Sarah was too scared to move, instead she pretended to still sleep. “I just got her back, he can wait a few more weeks…I have waited years to finally have her here with me. I will not bend to anyone’s will but my own. She is mine until I say so, and if so much as catches any word of her being here, I will personally see to your…Discipline.” Sarah, more brave than before sat up. “Mom? Mom is that you?” Helen turned words the bed that Sarah was sitting it. She gave her daughter a loving smile and quickly approached the bed, sitting on its edge. “I am here my darling, no need to fret.” She sat her slender hand on Sarah’s, and looked her in her matching eyes. There was nothing but warmth in Helen’s eyes, but Sarah could see something else, something sad. Sarah’s head was spinning; she had so many questions, so many worries. It was then Sarah had noticed her mothers dress, it was long full sleeved, hunter green velvet clung to Helen’s lithe frame. She looked like something from the renaissance fare. “Where are we? Why are you here now?” Sarah’s brow cinched together in worry and confusion as she studied her mother’s ageless face. Helen took a moment to collect her thoughts. “Well, we are in the castle beyond the city of botanical gardens. And I am here because this is my home, I am sure these answers are far from what you meant, but they are the truth. Sarah…” Helen reached up to cup Sarah’s chin smiling with all the warmth in the world. “I never wanted to leave you. I had no choice. My father passed and I was brought here to take over. I could no longer leave to the above ground, nor did I have access to you until you were ready.” She looked away then, disgusted with herself. “…Arrangements were made, and I was able to give you a chance to stay, when you were 15 years old. But you didn’t.” Helen smiled sadly. “I just wanted to be with you so badly, I wanted you to know me. I wanted to see you here with me, instead of looking on through glass. I have missed so much of your life, and yet you are here. And I have no idea how long we have together.” Sarah was having a hard time processing everything. It was getting hard for her to breathe, she could feel her heart beating against her chest so hard it hurt. She waited years for this moment. She wanted nothing more in the world to wrap her arms around her mother and tell her everything was ok. But, she couldn’t convince herself. Something was off. “Is it possible for me to leave here and return above ground? Or am I stuck here forever?” There was a moment of silence before Helen opened her mouth, only to shut it again. “I can’t be sure…There is only one person in this world who has the power to travel between worlds, or allow others to do so. He doesn’t know you are here, but…” She stopped and gripped Sarah’s hands tightly. “Once he finds out, I won’t doubt he will never let you leave.” Sarah’s eyes widened. “Who is he mother.” She already knew, but prayed with all her might that she was wrong. “His majesty the Goblin king.”
Jareth sat in his study, going over the various plans for the reconstruction of the damaged second quarters in his precious goblin city. The plans were going rather smoothly. He ran a gloved hand through his blonde hair and leaned back, propping his feet upon his large dark oak desk. His black poet shirt hung loosely over his tight leather pants that disappeared into his knee high boots. “Enter.” Rosslar stilled his hand inches from the door of which he was about to knock on. He reached down and turned the handle, pushing the heavy door open and stepping inside. “Your Majesty.” He said with a slight bow before walking closer to the desk. “Sit.” Rosslar took a seat in the chair that seemed to appear out of nowhere. “Your highness, I am here seeking protection for what I am about to tell you. I am your humble servant, but I fear the wrath of her majesty…” Jareth held up a gloved finger to him. “Out with it, or it is not she who you should fear.” Rosslar seemed to jump at the statement. The older gentleman started to fiddle with his white gloves. “Her majesty the princess has returned, she has reunited with Queen Helen. I tried to stop her, but she wouldn’t listen to me. I tried to tell her to bring the princess here to you…But she refused.” Jareth raised a pointed brow, removing his feet from his desk. “Interesting.” He stood and walked around his desk, looking down at Rosslar. “You will have my protection, I want you to say nothing of this to no one. You will report to me every night, and tell me what Helen is scheming. Do I make myself clear?” Rosslar was shaking a bit. “Yes your highness, but may I ask his majesty why he is not going after Helen for her most distasteful offence against you?” Jareth chuckled lowly, turning his back to Rosslar. “I have a feeling our princess will be coming to me very shortly.”“You have got to be kidding me!” Sarah stood in a rage. “Why would you do this to me? You LEFT me, and now you expect me to stay? And the only way back is through Jareth? You have a real sick way of trying to get close to me!” Helen looked down at her now empty hand and sighed. “Sarah calm down, you do not know what I went through when I had to leave you. You don’t know the whole story.” Sarah blinked and crossed her arms over her full chest. “Do YOU have any idea what I went through when you left? Do you even care to know how I feel about this mess you drug me into?” What am I doing? Isn’t this your dream? To see mom again? Look at her! She looks devastated! Get a grip you selfish bitch! “Sarah, leaving you was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, you are my world! You were always meant to come back here, Faye can not live above ground forever, our powers are too strong, it wouldn’t have been long before you hurt yourself, or someone you loved. I had to go because of my duties here, but I waited until you were 3, so you would remember me. Your father never knew of what I was, and yet he suffered many illnesses while I was with him. You have to understand Sarah, I had no choice, if you return not only will you be in danger, and the people around you, but I will be as well. There is something that we need to talk about, but first…” She took a deep breath and stood up, walking to Sarah and placing both hands on her shoulders. “But first, you have to remove that anger from your heart and try to understand that this is how it is meant to be. I do not wish this life on you, because it is not what you want. But this is the life that we must lead, and I believe you could be happy here if you tried my darling. Just try.” Helen was holding back tears, her heart felt cold and broken as she looked into the eyes that mirrored her own. “What hurts the most, is that I will never have a choice in any of this. My life is already mapped out, and I had no idea. My life above ground…The life I was making for myself, it means nothing now.” Sarah looked away from Helen, afraid to hurt her further. “…But if I am going to hurt people…Than I can’t go back, even if I will be miserable here.” Sarah walked around her mother and sat on the large bed. The room they were in was made of the most beautiful marble she had ever seen, it was as if there were diamonds and emeralds deep within the white and grey swirls. Every inch of the room was filled with millions of flowers of all kinds, some she knew she had never even seen before. The bed she was sitting on was large, and looked to be molded from the same marble that made up the floor, ceiling, and walls. The bedding was made of beautiful hunter green silk, and felt like the bed itself was made of the softest feathers on earth. Sarah looked up to Helen and smiled. “So, I am Faye like you? But how? My father is a human.” Helen saw hope in Sarah’s eyes, and was happy to oblige. “Even in the human world, dominate traits take over a full gene. If two parents have a baby, and both parents have blue eyes, it is more likely the child will have blue eyes. But if the parents have different colored eyes, say the mother having blue eyes, and the father having brown, the dominate gene will take over and give the baby the color eyes of whoever has the strongest gene. Very rarely is it an in between. And that is also true here. If two parents are different, say human and faye, than the child will be one or the other. There is no in between. You are faye because my gene is ancient, and stronger than the genes of a human. Do you understand Sarah?” Sarah nodded. “But I still don’t understand one thing, you have magic, but I do not. How can you be sure that I am faye?” Helen chuckled a bit. “Sarah, you said earlier that I brought you here, but as I said before…I can’t do that. Not even Jareth can just take you from the above ground without you consenting. You are here because you wanted to be. You wished it. That woman was merely giving you a choice. Your magic is what brought you to me. I have to say, it was bit of a shock to myself. I was not expecting you for another 6 years when your powers finally developed. You are a lot stronger than I thought you were, perhaps in time, you will be stronger than me.” She paused gathering her thoughts. “Time works differently here Sarah. In your world you are 19, but here, you are still very young. But don’t get me wrong, you are an adult here, but not yet grown up..” Sarah processed everything that she was being told. It was a lot to take in. Yet she knew there was more. She felt calmer now, a little at peace, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was still very off. “Now that that is out of the way. What was it that you wanted to talk to me about?” Helen knew she would never be ready for this. She held her head low and ran a slender hand through her long straight hair. “Sarah. I made an arrangement with Jareth’s father, a long time ago before you were born. I was running away, and wanted to be as far from this palce as possible. King Tyran was most happy to help me, he was ageing, and his only son would take the thrown soon. So before he died, and before he would send me to the above ground…We made an arrangement. He would allow me access to the above ground once, and one time back to the under world. If I would betroth my future daughter to Jareth. I agreed, never intending to have children in the first place. And than I had you. I hoped that you would be human and never have to come here. But I was wrong. I tried to think of any way I could spare you from your fate, a fate that I am bound to. So when I returned, I took a husband, and had 2 more children. Both were boys, healthy baby boys. I became very ill after having my second son, and through medicine I became better, but I could no longer bare children. I am so sorry Sarah, I have failed you in so many ways…I know you can never forgive me for all that I have done, I just hope one day…You can at least understand.” Sarah slammed backwards onto the bed, and groaned. “This can not be happening…” Helen walked to the bed and laid down on her side next to Sarah. “Do you remember when you beat the Labyrinth?” Sarah looked over at her mother and tried not to roll her eyes. “Yeah, how can I forget. My fiancé tried to kill me…Multiple times.” Helen chuckled lightly. “Sarah he was testing you, making sure I did not send the wrong girl. That day he gave you a gift that no one else in this world has. He has no power over you. You have to marry him, but you do not ever have to bend to his will. Though I will tell you, he is a most noble king; he loves his lands, and his people, goblin, faye, and everything in between. He is not a bad man, just…Cruel.” Sarah shook her head in disbelief. “Are you kidding me? How does him being ‘cruel’ make this situation any better?” Helen reached over and put her hand Sarah’s hair. “What I mean is, he is not evil. He is nothing compared to the evil in this realm that he keeps away. He would soon die, than let his people suffer, we are truly a blessed realm.” Sarah let her mothers words sink in,. “You must be hungry, how about we move into the dining hall and have dinner together?” Sarah touched her empty stomach and sat up. “I am pretty hungry. I have so many questions still un answered.” She stood and stretched a bit, Helen joined her at her side and offered her arm. “We still have time, all the time in the world actually, I will be happy to tell you everything.” Sarah smiled and looked up to the beautiful faye queen next to her. Helen leaned in and planted a small kiss on top of Sarah’s brow. “Happy birthday my darling princess.”
