~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
It wasn’t until he got into his car that he let himself contemplate the thought that he could be wrong. Their friendship was still relatively new. It had only been two years since the fire sale and he knew that some people kept sexual practices close to the vest. There was a very strong possibility that these videos might have been Matt’s idea. Just the thought made him growl, made a jealousy flare up in his chest that was so strong it burned. Without a conscious decision to do so, his foot stamped down on the gas pedal hard. Even when he exceeded the speed limit in excess, he didn’t bother slowing down.
It was late now. The roads weren’t empty, they rarely were in New York but he knew the back streets. He knew where to go at midnight to avoid traffic. Unfortunately that also meant that the drive was too familiar, so there was no distraction from his turbulent thoughts. They bounced around in his head in a jumble, his emotions arching through his chest like an out of control roller coaster. If the video’s were Matt’s idea, he couldn’t help being furious. The kid was smarter than that. Never mind that he had a thing for Matt, the young hacker had managed to land a government job.
If they found out he was showing off his assets online that would go away. It was in their employment policy. Any activity that could put tarnish on their reputation could be cause for termination. He’d always thought that was rich because government officials were never guilty of that offense. At the same time if he’d been coerced into it or if he didn’t know that would be worse. From every angle he looked at it there was no winning. After what felt like an eternity, he finally arrived at Matt’s apartment complex. He barely slowed down to park, instead sliding into the space with a squeal of tires.
When he jumped out of the car there was still a slowly dissipating cloud of smoke that lingered. The sharp smell of burning rubber assaulted his nose. He ignored it. Instead he focused on making his way toward the front of the building. The glass door that led into the lobby was locked when he got close enough to test it. Big surprise there. So he used the spare key Matt had given him to enter the building. The wait for the elevator wasn’t long. That didn’t mean it still didn’t try his patience. The subsequent ride up was even more annoying; his already frayed nerves becoming more worse for the wear.
By the time he reached Matt’s door his teeth were grinding together. Although he had a key, he didn’t go into the apartment. It would no doubt freak the other man out if he was already asleep. Raising his fist, he pounded on the door. He used enough force that it shook on its hinges. Letting about a second pass, he knocked again with just as much force. “Matt!” The name wasn’t quite a shout but it was pretty close. He lifted his hand to knock again when the door flew open. The first thing he saw where wide brown eyes. Unwillingly he remembered what they looked like half-lidded, drowsy from an onslaught of sensation.
It was Matt’s equally shocked voice that brought him back to the present. “John? What are you doing here?” Trying to keep a hold of his temper, he answered in an octave that was slightly less loud then the issuance of the other man’s name. “I need to talk to you. Now.” At that some of the shock fell away, Matt lifting his hands slowly in a look of placation. “Okay, no problem, just uh…” The pause in the kid’s speech was long enough for him to look out into the hallway. “Try to keep it down okay? I don’t want the neighbors complaining tomorrow.”
Before he could say anything, a hand landed on his upper arm and gently yanked him past the threshold of the door. Following the new momentum he took three steps into the apartment. It gave Matt more than enough room to re-secure the locks on the door. He waited until the younger man turned back to him with a tentative smile before he fairly exploded. “What is the matter with you!?” As expected the kid looked confused. The more logical part of his brain told him to calm down. Until he explained what was going on, Matt wasn’t going to be able to give him the answer he needed.
That thought was all well and good; unfortunately his temper was in full control. “Of all of the stupid, reckless, immature…” It was here the kid interrupted him looking highly annoyed. “Do you mind telling me exactly what it is I’ve done?” Being cut-off only made him angrier. In a sudden decision he turned on his heel to head to Matt’s bedroom. “Hey McClane, what are you…” He could hear the harried footsteps behind him, the rampant confusion in the other man’s voice. Not taking the time to address any of it, he made his way into the slightly messy bedroom.
Stopping just a few inches from the dresser, he looked at the bed critically. With small movements, he slid across the carpeted floor sideways trying to find the right angle. “Um…John, do you mind telling me what’s going on? You’re kind of freaking me out.” Finding the right spot, he looked over his shoulder and right into the interior of a messy closet. The angle of the footage suggested the camera would be on the upper shelf. Turning toward the closet abruptly, he started to throw stuff over his shoulder. “Oookay, I guess not.” There was a resigned pause. It only lasted a few minutes though, the kid speaking up again angrily when he moved onto throwing boxes.
“Dude, alright, seriously, enough. I’ve got stuff in these you’re going to break.” That’s when he found it. His fingers closed around the camera and attempted to take it off the shelf. It didn’t budge. He wasn’t sure if it was secured to the shelf or caught on something. In the end it didn’t matter. He was determined to take it down. Gripping the camera tightly, he gave a hard yank. “I’m not going to let it go this time either. I don’t care if you do have a gun. You will replace anything you break or I’ll give you a serious beat…down.” Apparently actually facing him took the wind out of Matt’s sails.
The other man gave him a slightly nervous laugh. “Hey, uh, I was just kidding. You know that right? Old buddy, old pal…” A fist landed on his upper arm in a light tap. Instead of addressing the younger man’s rambling, he held up the camera he’d ripped out of the closet. It was a small handheld camcorder. There were wires sticking out of it and plastic cords around the silver device probably to hold it in place. The motion of his hand had the other man looking down. “What is that?” They both knew what it was. The real question was what it was doing in Matt’s closet.
It was in that exact second that he knew for sure that the kid didn’t know anything. As much as his possessive jealous side was slightly abated, he didn’t feel any happier about the new knowledge. What he did feel slip away from him though, was all the anger directed at the other man. The brown eyes shot up to meet his gaze, a hint of panic starting to color their normally soft depths. “How did you know that was there?” Instead of speaking he moved back into the living room. He knew Matt would follow. When he reached the numerous monitors wedged against the wall, he turned to face the other man who was hovering a few steps at his back. “Bring up an Internet window.”
The gentle command wasn’t followed, Matt only giving him a look of trepidation. “Why?” Keeping his voice low and as soothing as he could manage, he ignored the question. “Just do what I’m asking, kid.” Although he still appeared hesitant Matt moved to comply this time around. Within seconds one of the computers was on and an Internet window was sitting open. As soon as everything was ready, the other man moved back so he could reach the keyboard. Leaning down in a slight hunch, he hen pecked in the correct web address.
It took him a bit longer then it would at home because the address didn’t automatically pop up under the skinny white box. He was grateful for the extra minutes as much as it made his nerves feel frayed. When he was finally finished, he hit the enter key before moving back to his previous location. Now that he was no longer in the way, Matt settled down in his computer chair once more. With a slowness that spoke of trepidation, he watched the younger man scroll down the webpage. The second it became blatantly clear just what type of site it was Matt turned pale as a sheet.
When the motion of the screen abruptly stopped, he looked to the other man’s hand to see it lying stationary on the mouse. Leaning a little closer, he pointed to a link on the left sidebar. “Click this link.” He hated to push this further down a road he could see was distressing but at the same time Matt had to know the truth. Without comment the other man moved to comply. The new screen that opened up showed a list of names. It was an index of all the people who uploaded videos on the website. Somewhere on this list was the guy who had been filming Matt.
He couldn’t remember the name off the top of his head but he had no doubt he’d recognize it as soon as he saw it. “Scroll down.” After about five minutes he spotted the user name in question. “Stop. Click on this guy.” He pointed directly to the link, so there could be no confusion. The minute the other man complied, another screen loaded revealing a ton of videos. Just like before Matt froze. Only this time around the immobility was brief. One second he was looking at the screen and the next he was running out of the room. The destination became clear seconds later when Matt practically flew into the bathroom.
He approached the half-closed door slowly, wincing in sympathy when he heard the sounds of retching. For a time he just stood there listening. Not knowing how else he could offer his support. All the while his stomach churned. He wished he could say the sounds filtering into the hallway where the sole cause. Unfortunately his stomach was protesting for more reasons than he could name. None of them were good. Eventually the door came flying open. He was given an upward glance, the kid’s hand sliding under his mouth. The look dared him to say anything smart.
Normally he’d take offense to it but tonight he understood the defensive expression. There was a look in the younger man’s eyes that said he felt weak. That the reaction Matt had just had, that he’d been a witness to, really meant he wasn’t strong enough. All of it was garbage. He wished he could tell his friend that without making him feel worse. Since he knew that he couldn’t, he instead ignored that anything had happened. “Is there a way to take down the videos?” When Matt started to move back toward his computer he followed in an easy stride. “I’m going to contact the webmaster.”
Taking that as a yes, mainly because he didn’t know what it meant, he took up his previous position at the other man’s left side. In no time at all Matt had a different window up and was typing up an email. The words quickly filtered into the small white box as the kid’s fingers flew over the keyboard. Although he didn’t know much about any of this stuff, he had to admit that Matt’s knowledge impressed him. That was something he’d never told anyone, not even the young man in question. Looking at the kid’s profile he decided that someday he would. He had a feeling that Matt needed to hear it.
When the sound of keys clanking tapered off, he refocused on the bright screen. It was just in time to see the other man hit a button that said send. “There, I let the webmaster know that I didn’t authorize any of the videos that were posted. They should take them down. I’ll keep checking the website to make sure that they do.” The relief he felt washed through him like a gentle wave. “So that’s it then. It’s over.” He frowned when Matt smiled bitterly. “No, it’s not over. The videos are already viral. Once something is on the Internet it’s out there forever.”
Suddenly he really wanted to find the guy responsible for this. Beforehand he’d been focused solely on his friend. Now though he wanted to beat the unknown man to within an inch of his life. “Do you know the guy that did this?” It was none of his business but he asked anyway. Without a name it would be pretty difficult to deliver death to the guy's doorstep. “Yeah.” The word seemed hesitant. He knew there was more without needing to ask. When he didn’t respond, apparently Matt could sense that he’d picked up on that. Even as he watched the other man’s head tipped downward in what he could tell was shame.
In an effort to keep his cool he clenched his jaw. Within seconds it was already starting to ache. “It’s my boyfriend. His name is Keith.” There was a beat of a pause before Matt continued. “I can’t believe that I trusted him.” His hands clenched into fists. Although the younger man hid it well, he could hear the vulnerability just under the tone of his voice. Trying to remind himself to stay calm, he unhinged his jaw to push out some words. “Does he have a key to your place?” At first there was no response. The hesitation was back. He was getting ready to try again when Matt spoke up some reluctance.
“Yeah, we live together.” Automatically his brows drew together in a rampant confusion. Over the last few months he’d been to the other man’s place several times. Not once did he mention that he was living with someone. He’d never even seen someone else hanging around. “Since when, Monday?” The words came out sounding far more harsh then he’d intended. There were a few reasons for that. Not only did his jealousy spike with the new information but he felt hurt that Matt wouldn’t tell him something that vital. When the dark head tipped down a little lower though, he couldn’t feel more then mildly frustrated.
“It’ll be a year next month. The job Keith has keeps him away a lot. That’s why you’ve never seen him around.” Although he could tell the kid wanted to keep hiding, the dark eyes did seek him out then. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you John. I just didn’t know how you’d react. I’ve lost friends over the fact that I’m bisexual. I didn’t want to risk it.” He frowned mildly. The state of the world sometimes was pretty sickening. There were a lot of things he didn’t understand and more than a few things he didn’t approve of. That still didn’t give him the right to judge anybody.
He wondered just who these so called friends were. Now he wanted to beat up multiple people. That reminded him of the next question he’d been meaning to ask. “Where is Keith?” With a crooked frown that told him Matt knew what he was thinking, the other man responded in a mild tone. “Morocco. He won’t be back for another two weeks.” The information was disappointing. Still, they weren’t without options. “When he gets in, I’ll meet him at the airport. I’m sure I can get him at least a few years for this.” Sometimes having friends in high places came in handy.
His words immediately had the other man’s eyes as wide as saucers. When he eventually spoke the words tumbled together messily. “No, I don’t want to press charges.” Now he was shocked. The argument was already on his lips when Matt continued. “I don’t want anyone to know about this. If you arrest him it becomes public record.” This was something he’d heard many times over the years. It never failed to tick him off. Too many people got away with too much because society didn’t know where to place the blame. “Matt..” That was the furthest he got.
“No McClane, I’m not going after him. Nothing you can say will change my mind.” He wanted to argue the point anyway. It was taking in the stubborn set to the other man’s jaw that stemmed his words. The look was one he recognized; he knew Matt wouldn’t change his mind. With a heavy sigh, he looked around the apartment. “Do you have somewhere to go for the night?” He could see the answer even before the other man spoke. “I’ll just stay here. It’s going to be weeks before Keith gets back.” Automatically he was shaking his head.
“No, I don’t think so. I’m not leaving you alone in this apartment as long as he has a key. At any point he could come back early.” Looking around a little helplessly, Matt eventually reconnected their gazes’ long seconds later. “I don’t know anyone in the city.” That was all well and good with him. While the younger man was thinking things over he’d already made up his mind. “You know me. Go pack a bag.” He was given a small hesitant smile. Instead of waiting for the argument as to why Matt couldn’t impose, he turned on his heel to head back toward the bedroom.
By the time the other man joined him in the room, one of his suitcases was already lying on the bed. They shared a brief glance before Matt stared to pack his bag. He waited by the doorway, trying to stay out of the way and watched the suitcase slowly fill to capacity. His gaze was so focused on watching the other man’s movements that suddenly hearing his voice was a little startling. It didn’t even matter that he was speaking in a low whisper. “The stuff we did in the videos. I agreed to most of it for Keith. I wanted to make him happy. Normally I wouldn’t be with other people or do…some of the other things.”
At first he didn’t say anything, his gaze resting on Matt’s profile. He was still searching for the right thing to say when his friend continued. “It was important to me that you knew that.” Feeling the need to offer what support he could, he walked toward the younger man slowly. He stopped only when a few inches separated them. When he spoke his voice was as soothing as he dared to make it. “I don’t think anything less of you Matt. I don’t think I ever could.” The dark eyes connected with his gaze then. He could tell without asking that what he said had helped.
They fell into a silence that quickly started to feel awkward. Deciding the time was right for them to leave he used that to change the subject. “Are you ready to go?” He was given a nod before the other man retrieved his bag off the bed. They left the apartment in silence. At some point either tomorrow or the day after they’d come back for the rest of Matt’s stuff. Until the younger man found someplace new all of it could stay in his apartment or if they needed to he’d find Matt a storage unit. All he knew for sure was that he wanted the other man out of this place as soon as humanly possible.
During the trip down to the lobby he noticed a shift in Matt’s mood. It was a small difference but it was there none the less. He had a feeling that the younger man was quickly moving into the brooding stages. Before this was all over with he knew that Matt would feel a whole cavalcade of emotions. He just hoped he was ready for it. Somewhere not so deep down, he had a feeling he wasn’t.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
He brought the car to a slow stop as the light turned red. Unwillingly his gaze slid sideways to land on his silent passenger. They had only been driving for a few minutes but the quiet had been stifling from the start. Now that Matt had been essentially ‘rescued’ from a bad situation, he felt awkward trying to reestablish normal conversation. “Did you really think I would do something like that?” The flat words had him blinking in surprise and before he knew it his sidelong glance was a full on stare. Internally he scrambled for something to say. None of his answers seemed like the right one.
Eventually he settled on something because he had to. If he got yelled at, oh well. It’s not like he wasn’t used to it at this point in his life anyway. “No. I just didn’t know for sure.” The look sent his way was flat as well but there was an iciness under its surface that was glaringly obvious. “I don’t know. You seemed pretty sure when you barged into my apartment throwing accusations around.” Taking a deep breath, he tried to keep his cool. His young friend was going through a lot, the last thing Matt needed was him losing his temper.
“I wasn’t…alright, I should have given you a chance to explain. That doesn’t mean I was accusing you of anything. The person you should really be angry at is your boyfriend.” The light turned green. He started forward gratefully. It wouldn’t be long before they arrived at his apartment. As soon as they did he was getting the kid settled and he was going to hit the hay hard. Tomorrow they could start fresh. If all went well, they could forget this day ever happened. “Stop the car.” He almost obeyed on instinct, his gaze automatically searching for the previously unseen threat. “What is it?”
This time around he could actually hear the anger in Matt’s voice. “Stop the car. I want to get out.” Instead of following the command, he frowned severely. “Are you nuts? This is one of the worst parts of the city. You won’t make it a block before getting mugged.” Glancing briefly to the right, he just managed to catch the cold brown gaze. “I’ll take my chances.” With that the last of his patience was gone. “No, I’m not letting you out just so I have to pick you up at the hospital. You had a bad night, get over it. Throwing a temper tantrum isn’t going to do you any favors. So just sit there and be quiet until you cool off.”
Out of the corner of his eye he could see the narrow stare that was fixed on his profile. Even in the dark he could easily see what the other man wasn’t verbalizing. It was a look that clearly said where he could go and what he could do to himself on the journey. As much as it made his temper flare, he remained silent. There was already too much tension for his liking. Eventually Matt faced forward to look at the windshield. He couldn’t see the other man’s eyes but he had a feeling the street wasn’t what he was seeing. The dark head slowly started to move back and forth with a shake. “You know what man. Forget this.”
He barely had time to register the disgusted words before Matt opened the passenger side door. In automatic reaction he swerved the car to the left. Just as he’d been hoping the abrupt momentum swung the door into the shut position. As soon as he could manage it he yanked the car’s stick shift into park. With a glare he was sure rivaled the heat of the sun, he turned toward his annoyed passenger. “What is wrong with you?” It took every ounce of willpower he possessed to not shake the slender man’s frame. He’d been doing a steady 45mph. The kid could have killed himself.
When no answer was forthcoming he almost lost the battle against his will. “Matt!” The shout drew the other man’s gaze and just like that the anger evaporated. There were too many emotions in the dark eyes to identify them all but at the top of the heap was a sadness that literally made his chest ache. Mixed in with everything else there was confusion, as though Matt couldn’t comprehend anything that was happening. He looked so lost. “What is wrong with me?” The words sounded hollow, completely devoid of any of the emotion that was saturating the younger man’s eyes.
His spine straightened and his jaw set. “Nothing. There is nothing wrong with you.” Although his voice was soft, the conviction behind the words was clear. Deciding the time was right to change the subject, he refocused on the road as he put the car back into drive. “If you don’t want to stay at my place, I can take you to a hotel.” He held his breath, waiting for the answer. The last thing he wanted right now was Matt out of his sight. It would be harder to protect him if they went their separate ways and after what he’d stumbled across tonight the need to protect him was strong.
“No, that’s um…I’d rather stay with you if that’s alright.” The breath he’d been holding pushed out in a silent rush. “Yeah, it’s fine.” They fell into a tense silence once more. He tried not to fidget. This wasn’t anywhere close to the comfort level he was used to around his friend. “Hey, uh I’m sorry…for being such a jerk, you know.” With that the tension started to slowly drain from his muscles. “Don’t worry about it. My response earlier didn’t exactly help.” His easy manner apparently put Matt at ease because another second later the slim form molded into the car seat.
This time when they lapsed into silence it felt as comfortable as coming home. After some minutes had passed he flicked on the radio. Immediately he turned the station to one that the kid liked. He kept the volume low, not only to help soothe Matt’s nerves but to keep his own on an even keel. He wanted to do something nice but that didn’t stop his ears from protesting from the stuff screeching out of his speakers. Turning his attention to getting them home, it wasn’t long before they were pulling into the dark parking lot. The satchel the younger man never seemed to be without made its way across slim shoulders.
With that taken care of, he retrieved the second larger bag of luggage from the trunk. A vague motion of his hand fended off Matt’s attempt to retrieve the bag and they both made their way toward the front door of the dark apartment building. Unsurprisingly the lobby was empty. He hit the worn down button on the panel to the elevator and they waited for it to arrive in the same silence they’d shared in the car. The metal doors eventually slid open with a light hiss of air. They both stepped inside the small metal box only to wait again. For some reason he was suddenly aware of their closeness.
He distracted himself from the feeling by contemplating not for the first time why the elevator always smelled like Colby Cheese. When they arrived on his floor he led the way to his door. It wasn’t needed; the other man knew where he lived. Still, it was something to do and he couldn’t deny it felt right. The key slid into the lock almost too loudly, admitting them entrance into the slightly barren apartment. As soon as his foot stepped over the threshold he fell into the mode of a host. He got Matt settled in the guest room, made sure he didn’t need anything, told him to make himself at home and then said goodnight before retreating to his own room to grab some shut eye.
When finally found himself in bed he remained awake for some time. In his line of work, actually in his life in general, it was common for things to change rapidly. So this new living situation shouldn’t have him as out of sorts as it did. It was almost impossible to believe that only one wall separated him from the younger man. The knowledge that Matt liked guys that way was even harder to swallow. He wondered how he could have missed something so important. Then he came to realize that maybe he had chosen not to see that part of his friend.
Maybe he hadn’t dared to hope that there could be more between them or maybe his fragile heart didn’t want the pain that hope could bring. He’d been down this road several times before. It was always a dead end. Pushing away his thoughts with disgust, he rolled onto his left side, determined to get some rest. Soon enough he felt his weariness pulling him down into sleep. At this point he was a little too tired to stop his thoughts from straying to Matt. In all actuality, he was too sleepy to remember why he should fight them period.
