Chapter 2 Sunday, 25th March 1984 Claire opened her eyes, turned her head to the side and looked at the alarm clock, 7.05 am. Resting her head back on the pillow she sighed, of all the days she had to wake up early on. “I suppose I may as well get up and finish my homework,” she said to no-one in particular and arched herself up off her bed. Before taking her seat at her desk she opened the blind to let in the early morning light. She opened her books and began to read through the pages that had been set by her English teacher but the words seemed to phase in and out, she couldn’t focus or concentrate on them. She sat back wondering what to do, perplexed by the situation she now found herself in. She hadn’t had a particularly restful night either, tossing and turning, getting up twice to go and get a drink and then obviously having to get up again and go to the bathroom. Maybe it was just the book that she didn’t find interesting but she doubted that considering it had been one of her favourites since she first read it a couple of years previously. No something else or someone else was distracting her, she decided. She looked over to her dresser, the faint sparkle of her one existing diamond stud earring twinkled in the ever brightening light. She touched her lips with her fingertips and smiled faintly, sighing with the recollection of her and John’s tender kiss before she had come home. The kiss had been sweet but truly exhilarating. Thing was, what on earth was she going to do about that kiss, John and the situation with the other 3 members of the breakfast club. Yesterday morning, they had all arrived at school not knowing one another but by the end of the day they had walked out of there as true friends, the kind that had bared their souls to one another and always would be there if anything happened; but, in all honesty, could she really do that knowing how tough it would be for her Monday if she said ‘Hi’ to anyone of them bar Andy. Brian was right, she was conceited and John was right too, she was a bitch but could she just throw away her friendship with Jenna, Shelley and the rest of the gang, she doubted she could. Just because she was a ‘richie’ it meant that she was supposed to follow the popular crowd for better or worse. However, she asked herself, did she really like crayoning outside of the line once in a while – what had John said ‘being bad feels pretty good, huh?’ He was right, it had felt good to be bad, and to be honest he had felt good too. But what was the deal with John? He went around all attitude and irritability but then when you could get behind the armour he was the sweetest, most gentle guy she had ever had the pleasure of knowing. Was most of his front an act she wondered, but thinking on from that she remembered he had had that awful scar on his arm and he had become pretty angry with Andy when he had shown it to him, had his father really done that to him? What was she going to do, before yesterday falling for the school criminal would never have been an option but now … who knew what would happen. Claire got up from her seat and went into her walk-in wardrobe; it was pointless sitting around in her room not being able to concentrate on anything so she thought she may as well make herself useful and take the dog for a walk. She selected her favourite pair of Levi’s and teamed them with a baby pink t-shirt and raspberry batwing cardigan. She put on her favourite boots and brown leather jacket then when the dog was set with his leash she opened the door and walked out into the hazy spring morning. As she continued walking the dog through her neighbourhood she imagined what it would be like to do this with John, having him hold her close to him keeping her warm. She shivered, from what she wasn’t sure; it may have been the cold gusty breeze that every now and then suddenly whipped around her but she felt sure it actually had something to do with her frequent thoughts of John and their kiss from yesterday. Stopping abruptly she realised she had walked further than she had intended to. She looked around taking in her surroundings to try and ascertain where she was. She couldn’t be that sure but she felt she was someway from her home near what her ‘richie’ friends referred to as the dark side of town, the side of town she felt sure John must live. Not that she was actually going to hang around long enough to find out and she did need to get back before she was missed by her parents, ‘sometimes I wish I was ignored like Allison,’ she thought. Sighing, she turned to face the way she had come and began retracing her steps. “Hey, you lost?” a male voice shouted from the other side of the street startling Claire. Rather than looking up to see who it was she began to walk quicker away from the ever nearing footsteps. “Hey Claire, has the ignoring me started already or did our kiss mean nothing yesterday?” She stopped again, realising that John was behind her trying to catch her up. Turning to face him she smiled as he came ever closer to her then frowned when she realised that she wasn’t wearing any make up and had only shoved a comb through her hair in order to look somewhat decent. She had had no thoughts about seeing anyone she knew this early in the morning let alone John Bender, who now stood before her with a quizzical look upon his face. “You ok?” He asked. “Yeah, just … I …” she motioned her free hand around her face, and then quantified “didn’t think I was going to see anyone I knew whilst walking the dog this morning.” She shrugged lowering her face so that he wouldn’t be able to see what a mess she actually was. “So, I get to see the untamed version this morning, huh, you know you really don’t have to worry, not like I’m gonna tell all your friends you weren’t fit to be seen with them at er …” he looked at his watch, “9.45 am on a Sunday.” His grin widened the thought of playing with her making him smile even more. He thought she was just about to tell him to shut up when she eventually managed to turn her face to look at him directly but he stopped her with a wave of his finger and motioned for her not to say anything. “To be honest Claire,” he continued, “you’re the brightest thing I’ve seen since 6.00 last night, and you look as beautiful now as you did when we parted.” Claire’s face began to brighten, first with disbelief then with joy, had he really just said she was beautiful, she couldn’t quite believe it so she mentally pinched herself. “Thank you, John.” “Don’t thank me for telling the truth,” he never stopped smiling, “so, what you doing over this neck o’ the woods then, young lady.” “Well, to be honest, I kinda walked here before I realised I’d walked here if that makes any sense at all. See I was thinking about things … from yesterday and well next thing I know, I’m here.” “Could be construed as fate, you being here and meeting up with me like that.” “Or could just be the fact that my mind was on other things and I didn’t quite realise how far I had gone. Not that that’s a bad thing though meeting up with you, I mean, I’m not that sure how to get home just at the minute and I reckon you know these streets like the back of your hand so … maybe …” “I could walk you home?” “Um, yeah, if you wouldn’t mind that is?” “Got nothing else better to do.” John gestured for them to start moving on by offering Claire his arm, she gladly took it, not only to feel safer but to take the opportunity to be closer to him. “What’s up?” “I was just wondering how I far I’d walked, and meeting up with you like that … small world, huh?” “You’ve probably walked a good couple of miles, must have been heavy stuff you were thinking about.” “I don’t know, I was actually more surprised to see you to be honest. Do you live around here?” “Yeah, two blocks over.” “It seems ok here!” “Well, Claire, it ain’t no palace but this ain’t the shittiest part of town either.” John spat out angrily. “My dad’s not a complete bum, he provides for his family, just a little too much sometimes that’s all.” “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean anything by what I said.” Claire answered him, trying to clam him down. “I know, its just too many people have preconceived ideas ‘bout me, just because of the way I am and how I dress. Feel like I’ve gone up 10 notches though wearing this earring of yours.” “Mmm, does look good you know. How come you’re up so early?” “That another preconceived idea?” He asked, watching her as she shook her head. “If you must know I was on my home from work!” “Work?” “Yeah, you know, person gets up, goes to a job they hate, gets paid, they go home again. Mind you bein’ a ‘richie’ an all you probably never even broken a finger nail.” Claire hit him on the arm playfully in mock shock at his words, “think I broke one just then hitting you.” “Better than my dad hittin’ on me. Another reason why I go to work.” “What do you do?” “Labouring, for this guy I know; he does a lot of renovation work, I help out when he needs me.” “Do you enjoy it?” “Yeah, hoping he’ll sort out some kind of apprenticeship but he wants me to go to college, get better grades and stuff. The ole man I shoulda got.” “I’m glad someone’s looking out for you.” “Yeah, well you know,” he answered awkwardly, shrugging his shoulders, “so, what’s the dog called?” “Benjy,” she replied. John stopped and stooped down to let the dog sniff his free hand, never letting Claire take her arm from around his, and when he felt safe enough he stroked the dog, “hi, Benjy, I’m John, I trust that you and I will become good friends.” Claire beamed, “you must have a way with animals,” she said as they began walking again, “you’re the only guy Benjy has ever taken to, he hates my dad and doesn’t really like my brother all that much either!” “Well, I may not have a totally truly pleasing disposition all of the time but I do seem to be able to become at one with the animals.” “So you’re Dr Dolittle then and I must agree that at times yesterday you could be the most selfish arrogant pig, but then you somehow changed in my eyes; even though you said some extremely hurtful things toward me yesterday, which I have come to realise most of what you said was true, every now and then I saw you in a completely different light, you weren’t a selfish arrogant pig, you were the kindest gentlest guy I’d ever met.” “Is that why you came and found me in the closet?” “Partly!” “Why else then,” She stopped and turned toward him, “I told you when I kissed you on the neck I did that because I knew you wouldn’t. Even though there were times when I could quite easily have torn your head off, the chemistry there was between us was too much for me to let go of completely, I had to do something about it, didn’t I?” “I’m glad you did,” he almost whispered, closing the gap between them to take her into his arms and kiss her once again, the dog silently watching, waiting for them to return to normality so that they could all continue on their journey home. The electricity pulsating between them set their hearts alight as the intensity of their kiss grew stronger, neither one willing to break apart until either we’re struggling to fill their lungs with air. Finally, they drew apart slightly breathless as they searched each other’s eyes for the true meaning of what had just happened to them. Benjy whimpered, it was time to move on. “That was incredible, Claire.” “Thanks, you weren’t so bad yourself,” she mocked, “Kinda seals my fate though, don’t you think?” “Meaning?” “Well, one things for certain, things are gonna be different at school tomorrow. Me falling for you is not exactly going to thrill my friends.” John stopped, and turned Claire once more to face him, “does that really matter?” He asked, a worryingly hurt expression clouding his features. “No,” she replied shaking her head in agreement and smiling up at him, “no, it doesn’t because at the end of the day I know that with your support you will help me become a stronger person. I know I’ve only known you for just over 24 hours but I have found out more about you in that short time than I have about any of them put together and with you and the others fighting my corner, no-one will ever be able to hurt me whatever they say or do.” “You truly believe that don’t you?” He said, starting to walk with her again. “Yes, I do John. Since I left you yesterday I have thought of no-one else, I have had the worst nights sleep I’ve ever had because I didn’t know what I was going to do tomorrow or say to anyone tomorrow at school, especially you. I was worried about what I was going to tell my friends and then I realised that those people aren’t really my friends if they can’t include you guys. I was conceited and I was a bitch and there probably are going to be times when I still am, I admit that but what I have with you and with Andy, Allison and Brian is worth much more to me than somebody bitching about how much their parents give them for an allowance, or what car their likely to get once they pass drivers ed. I mean, it’s gonna be tough for a while but it’s gonna be worth it. If my friends can’t or won’t except you then that’s it, I’m finished with them?” “Ok, but what about your parents?” “What about them, like I said they both use me to get back at one another; I’m sick of being in the middle of them all of the time. To be honest if they don’t like you that’s just tough. I like you, I really like you and that’s all that matters. What about your parents, your friends even?” “My parents don’t care less about me, their just happy if I’m not under their feet. As for my friends, well they sure as hell won’t laugh their arses off and I won’t need to give them an excuse that I’m doin’ you, if they’ve got no respect for you then they, quite honestly, are not the people I thought they were and I can do without them. As long as I have you I’m gonna be ok, you might even be the ticket I need to get back on the straight an’ narrow. After what Vernon said to me yesterday an’ all.” “What did he say?” “After putting me down in front of all you guys he basically told me that I was a worthless piece of shit. He even tried riling me up so that I would hit him, crazy son of a bitch.” “That’s awful; I can’t believe he wanted you to hit him. What are you gonna do next week?” “I’m gonna do my time, peacefully. Vernon won’t know what’s hit him, in a manner of speaking, but hopefully with a bit of luck maybe he’ll believe that he on his own has changed me enough and let me off the following seven weeks. At the end of the day Claire, I know I’m a pain in the arse what with things at home the way they are, I guess this was my way of getting some attention but I don’t need that now, not while I’m with you.” “Sounds like we’re each other’s saviour, you’re saving me from becoming one of the worst people on the planet and I’m saving you from a life of crime. Go figure, the princess and the criminal, huh?” “Yeah, the princess and the criminal. So, princess, what do you fancy doin’ later on, I mean if you’re free?” “Mmm, why don’t you surprise me, I’m not bothered I’ll just be happy to be with you.” John stopped at the corner of her street depositing her in front of him. “Ok, in that case then I’ll come pick you up about 7, which is your house?” “Two doors up, the house with the oak panelled door. I’ll see you at 7, bye John.” Leaning into him she kissed him quickly before turning on her heel and walking up the street toward her house. “Bye, princess,” he called after her, grinning again. She had to stop every few feet to turn slightly and see if he was still there, he was watching her intently and smiling at her childishness. As she neared the final turn into the driveway she looked at him again smiling and waving, he merely laughed and turned to go home or wherever he felt like going. ‘Until 7, then,’ she thought and with that she disappeared inside her own home.
