A/N First, thank you to those of you who wrote reviews. I really appreciate them. And Bloody Mary, thank you for your kind words about Sophia’s Choice too. Interesting how we like the same types of shows - small town, supernatural powers kept secret, etc… Enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own The Covenant and make no money from the writing of this fiction. @ Chapter Two @ Madison Elizabeth Marish gazed out of the passenger side window at the fall beauty of the Massachusetts countryside. The leaves blazed with colors: red, orange, brown, yellow, green. It was a feast for the eyes. The mid-morning sun peaked between the leaves. She couldn’t help opening the window of the car and breathing the fresh scent, filling her lungs with an energy she never found in the city of Boston, the only other place she had known. Her father, Aaron Marish, glanced at his daughter and smiled to himself. He was happy that she would be getting this opportunity to attend such an exclusive private school and perhaps build a life for herself much better than what he could have given her. Their life wasn’t a bad one, sustained by his job at the Bank of Boston, but it wasn’t lavish by any means. They had a lot of bills and expenses to pay off, since his wife had run off, charging every credit card he had to the maximum before he was able to cut her off. But he had been managing. It almost seemed like a fairy tale when he received the letter in the mail from a small law firm in Ipswich. Apparently, they had been sitting on an inheritance due to a living Marish and had been unable to find a Marish for the last seventy three years. But it had some strange stipulations. First, a female Marish had to inherit, and second, the Marish had to live in Ipswich at least two years to inherit the full amount. The law firm had suggested that the perfect solution would to allow Madison Marish to attend boarding school in Ipswich which would therefore satisfy the two year resident requirement. After two years, she would also come into possession of the old Marish home. Aaron intended to take a look at this home before heading back to Boston. It would probably be quite old and perhaps unlivable. They passed an old cranberry bog and Madison smiled at the small boy standing next to the water, watching them pass in the car. The boy lifted his hand and waved. “How cute,” she commented. “What’s cute?” Aaron asked. “That little boy,” she replied. Aaron checked his rear view mirror and saw no one there. He sighed heavily. “Madi, did you forget something?” Madison lost her smile. She turned her head and looked back at the bog. The boy was no longer there. It occurred to her that the boy had been wearing old, turn-of-the-century clothing. She closed her eyes. “Dad, I just want a clear head. It’s my first day of school.” “You really want to chance it?” “I can handle it.” She looked at his doubtful face. “Really, dad.” They drove for another half hour, enjoying the beauty, when they saw a the turn off for Ipswich. Aaron turned off. “Here we are. Lovely, isn’t it?” “Yes,” Madison replied, meaning it. They continued through the town, their heads turning left and right, taking note of the different shops and businesses. “I like it,” she smiled. “So do I,” Aaron replied. “Wish I was moving here.” “You should, dad.” “Maybe. I’ll have to check out the job situation here first.” Madison turned to look outside of her window again and gasped. There, on the side of the road, bodies hung from a tree, swinging lifeless. “What?” her dad asked. When she looked again, the bodies were gone. It was happening again - her visions. “Nothing,” she replied, not wanting to worry her father. But she couldn’t fool him. He pulled off the side of the road, engine still running. “Take them now,” he ordered. “Dad, I don’t want to. Not today. It’s hard to concentrate.” “And freaking yourself out is the better option? No, we don’t move another inch until you’ve taken your pills.” She glowered at him, but opened her bag, pulling out her bottles and taking one tablet from each. Her father reached to the back seat and retrieved a bottle of water. She hated taking her pills, but sometimes the alternative was worse. At night she needed one set of pills in order to sleep without having horrendous nightmares that seemed completely real. In the day, she needed pills to stop her from seeing things that no one else could. It scared her what this might mean. Perhaps she should be going to a mental institution instead of a private school. But her father wouldn’t consider that option. He couldn’t believe that anything was really wrong with her. He just said that she had a very active mind which needed calming. She had a friend, Allison, at her old school who suggested that Madison was probably psychic and that she was the type of psychic that could see dead people. That sounded more plausible to Madison than having an ‘active mind’. She ended up reading all she could about spiritual mediums and psychic abilities. Problem was, she couldn’t turn it off whenever she wanted, not without her pills, and some of the images were not cute like that little boy. Some were horrendous. He started driving again when she had swallowed the last one in her hand. “You going to take care of yourself without me?” he worried. “Yeah, dad, please don’t worry.” “You don’t have to do this, you know. We can muddle through like always. We don’t have to take this inheritance.” She knew they had been hurting financially and her dad was struggling to make ends meet. She felt it would be selfish if she couldn’t do this for him - and for herself. “I’ll survive,” she replied. “Only survive?” “I mean thrive. I’ll thrive, dad. Live well and prosper, and all that.” He smiled ruefully at her. They pulled into the long driveway of Spencer Academy on this Tuesday morning, just before noon. It was quiet outside and Madison knew the classes were in session. She didn’t expect she’d start her own classes until tomorrow anyway. There would be administrative paper work to get out the way, a class schedule to figure out, and her accommodations to settle. “Wow, nice,” her father commented, looking at the façade of the school. “Kind of a country gothic type of building.” Madison nodded as she stepped out of the car looking about. It was beautiful. Leaves fell from tall trees in the soft breeze. Aaron took her large trunk from the back of the car and prepared to bring it up the brick steps to the entrance. “You ready?” Madison looked at him nervously. “I don’t know,” she replied, honestly. He took her in a hug and said, “I’m going to miss you.” “I’ll miss you too, dad,” she swallowed. What would life be like away from her dad, away from everyone she knew? It was October and she was starting school a few months after everyone else had. She anticipated that she’d have a lot to catch up on and she had always been an average student at best. She blamed the pills for that, for not allowing her sharp mind to operate at its maximum capacity. They continued up the top of the stairs and into the entrance, the entrance to her new life. OOOOO Tyler had been sitting in Advanced Algebra on the second floor when a metal reflection from the window caught his eye. He turned his head to glance out of the window and noticed a tan SUV pull up in front of Spencer’s entrance. A man and a girl got out and Tyler immediately knew it had to be the Marish girl. He sat up straighter, trying to get a better look as he craned his neck. It was hard to see any details from this distance, but from here he could see her long slender legs and long auburn hair. He couldn’t make out her facial features yet, but the body was very pleasing. When they disappeared into the building, Tyler sat back and smiled. Too bad none of the other Sons were in this class. He got the first glimpse and planned to hold it over their heads at lunch. While the teacher had his back turned, Tyler pulled out his cell phone and sent a text to the others. ‘She’s here. I saw her. And I’m not telling you anything else.’ He got an immediate response from Reid. ‘Fuck you.’ Tyler laughed. OOOOO Madison spent the next few hours in the administration building with her father, completing her registration and schedule. She had to listen to the school rules and regulations and then they received a tour, after which they took her to her dorm. The dorm mother assured her father of Madison’s safety and she was shown her room. “There are normally two to a room, but since we now have an odd number, you will have your room to yourself unless we get another new girl this year,” Mrs. Pierce announce. Madison walked about the room, opened the closet and peered out of the window. There were two single beds in the room and she chose the one under the window because of the beautiful tree right outside of it. She smiled at Mrs. Pierce. “It’s nice, thank you.” She was actually a bit relieved that she would not have to share with someone because one of her fears was having a dorm mate from hell. This was a bit of luck she intended on enjoying. She said her goodbyes to her father and he left. She watched out of her window as he drove away. The end of the day bell rang and she gazed down on the students leaving the various buildings, some coming toward the dorms. She backed away from the window and sat down on her bed, letting out a sigh. This was it. Her new life. There was no T.V. in the room and she had no books yet, so she decided to unpack her trunk and get organized before having to go down to dinner. A knock on her door startled out of her project. When she opened it she noticed a pointy nosed, curly headed girl looking her up and down. “Hi, I’m Kira Snider,” the girl said, holding out her hand. “And you must be the new girl.” “Madi.” “Madi?” “Madison Marish,” Madison said, getting the feeling that this girl wasn’t as friendly as she was trying to act. “Well, aren’t you lucky? A room to yourself.” Kira walked into the room and looked about at her things laid on her bed. “Where are you from?” “Boston,” Madison replied. “I mean what school?” Madison could see right through this girl. She was a snob, plain and simple. She wasn’t going to play this game. “It was just a school,” Madison shrugged. Kira looked at Madison up and down, as if she was shocked at her insolence. “Fine, don’t tell me. You don’t know how to make friends, do you?” “I know how to make the right ones,” Madi replied. Kira’s mouth fell open. “Obviously not!” She walked straight out, slamming the door behind her. Madison let her breath out. Well, this was not a good start. But what a stuck up twit that one was. Hopefully, not everyone was like Kira Snider or this was bound to be a lonely experience. OOOOO Caleb and Pogue had left for Nicky’s with Sarah and Kate, leaving Tyler and Reid to scout out the ‘new girl’ as per plan. They weren’t sure when the girl would be out of her dorm but were fairly certain she would come to the mess hall for dinner. They sat eating and finishing homework, keeping one eye on the door. The mess hall was open between five and seven p.m. for dinner and it was now approaching six-thirty. “She’s probably not coming,” Tyler announced. “You want to go to…” He stopped speaking when she came into the room, the auburn-haired witch, and he held his breath a moment, taking her in. She was gorgeous - striking green eyes, clear skin, nicely proportioned. Reid swung his face in the direction Tyler was staring too and gaped at her. “Oh, yeah, me like,” Reid grinned, his eyes sweeping her body up and down. She now stood with her back to them, looking at the menu and deciding what she wanted. “Reid, wait…” Tyler hissed as the blond playboy stood and meandered over to the object of their attentions. Tyler ran a hand through his hair and sighed, hoping Reid didn’t mess this up. Reid came to her side and said, “Hi, you’re new here, right? I’m Reid Garwin.” He held out his hand. Madison felt a bit nervous. The blond boy was quite good looking. She took his hand. “Madison Marish.” “Well, Madison Marish, welcome to Spencer,” he smiled, flirting with his eyes. “Come and sit with us after you decide what you want. We can fill you in on anything you want to know about this place.” Madison smiled shyly. “All right.” This boy made her pulse speed up. “Thanks.” Reid’s eyes traveled down her body and back to her face. “No problem,” he flirted. He walked back to his friend and Madi glanced at the other boy as well. He smiled at her and she smiled back. Turning her head back to the menu, she muttered under her breath to herself, “Oh, boy. All right, calm down, Madi. They are just… hot guys.” Much more friendlier than that Kira girl, at any rate. Maybe Spencer wouldn’t be so bad after all. OOOOO Reid and Tyler seemed to show up just about everywhere around the school, escorting her to classes and back to her dorm, taking meals with her. She was grateful for their company as it seemed it was difficult making friends with other girls, especially since Kira Snider had told everyone Madison was a rude bitch. They had introduced her to Kate and Sarah, who seemed to be pretty nice to her. They were girlfriends of Caleb Danvers and Pogue Parry, who Reid and Tyler said were their close friends as well. Madison didn’t know what to think of Caleb and Pogue. They were a grade level above Reid and Tyler and seemed a bit more mature, but they also seemed to keep their distance a lot when she was with Tyler and Reid. She wondered if they had something against her. A week after she started at Spencer, Madi asked them, “Do Caleb and Pogue dislike me?” “What? No, of course not,” Tyler replied. “What makes you think that?” Madison shrugged. “I don’t know. They just seem to walk off a lot when I’m around.” “They like you,” Reid answered. “But they are taken, if you know what I mean.” Madison shook her head. “I didn’t mean that I wanted them to like me, like me. I know they have girlfriends.” “You worry too much,” Reid replied, slinging an arm around her as they walked to class. OOOOO Caleb sat in the boys locker room, his head in his hands, trying to sort through the strangeness of having the witch around. And yes, it was strange. He never imagined it would be like… this. Caleb knew power. It pulsed through every fiber of his own body, especially when he focused on it. But this… this was something different. He had never been around a true witch before, one of the blood, only warlocks. And this power, this female power was different. Seductive. Lingering. At close proximity to her he could feel her power, and her scent, coiling around him, searching for a way in. And she wasn’t even aware she was doing this. She was so damn innocent. She was so innocent and yet there was Reid and Tyler, captured by her spell, unable to stay away from her for very long, thinking that they were the ones in control, calling the shots. If only they really knew. Pogue entered the room, noticing Caleb and sitting next to him. “Hey, you hiding out?” Caleb lifted tired eyes to his friend. “Yeah, I guess you could say that.” He wondered if Pogue felt it too. He would be eighteen in two more months and would be ascending like Caleb did. Caleb wondered if Pogue’s senses were already being heightened. “Do you feel it too, Pogue? Do you feel her power?” Pogue was silent for a moment, looking off, then he nodded. “Yeah, I’ve felt it. But I’m going to resist, Caleb. After… after I almost lost Kate… after what Chase did to her… I realized how much I really do love her.” Caleb smiled at him. “Yeah?” Pogue pushed him. “Shut up. But, yeah, I do.” They were silent for a few moments. “We have to learn to deal with this, Pogue. She’s going to need guidance. She doesn’t know anything about herself yet and I’m not sure Tyler and Reid should be the ones to inform her by themselves. They are too attracted to her and this needs to be her choice too.” Pogue nodded. “How do we start?” “Let’s meet tonight, without her, and speak with them. We need to have some sort of plan, some sort of way to introduce her into what we are, what she is. If we go about this wrong, she may leave Ipswich for good.” OOOOO A/N Wow, another chapter done.
