Odin’s booming voice echoed throughout the chamber: “Let the feast begin!”
His audience’s respectful silence gave way to a cacophony of chatter, as the assembled lords, ladies, warriors, and commoners began serving themselves and renewed their conversations. It was indeed a special occasion. Through laboured diplomacy, sober assessments of the balance of forces, and – most significantly – Thor’s heroic role in saving their realm from the attempted genocide of Loki, the Asgardians had at long last concluded a peace treaty with the Frost Giants. Celebration was the order of the day, and wine flowed freely at this sumptuous banquet held at the Allfather’s behest. Thor sat back and took in the sights and sounds of merriment. His mind wandered to Jane, and it stayed there until a female voice brought him back to reality. “Training for battle all day and not even hungry?” inquired Sif as she grabbed a cherry off Thor’s plate and popped it into her mouth. “Leaves more for me...at least until Volstagg arrives.” Thor grinned. Sif’s ability as a warrior was proven, her fighting ability uncontested by all but those foolish enough to believe themselves more powerful than a mere “maiden”. Yet this evening, he was surprised to see his old battlemate appearing dressed more as the latter, draped in a loose-fitting black gown that nevertheless accentuated her feminine figure more than he was used to. It was a side of Sif he had trouble acknowledging, prizing her above all else as his loyal comrade-in-arms. “Apologies, Sif,” said Thor. “My thoughts were elsewhere.” The Warriors Three appeared and plopped themselves down in the surrounding seats. As expected, Volstagg carried multiple plates with every available delicacy overflowing on all sides, while Hogun and Fandral contented themselves with more modest portions. After greeting Thor and Sif they proceeded to indulge their appetites. Thor, for his part, merely yearned to see Jane. And then there she was, at the top of the stairs - a vision in white, draped in the finest Asgardian cloth fashioned into a dress that greatly complemented her natural beauty. Thor stood up to greet Jane and their eyes met. Smiling, she descended the stairs and walked over to his table. Thor took her by the hand and turned to his friends. “I’m sure you all remember Jane Foster,” he said. The Warriors Three laughed in the affirmative and waved. Sif nodded her head slightly. “Jane has created an interdimensional doorway connecting our two realms,” continued Thor. “Imagine – a human constructing the equivalent of what took Asgardians hundreds of years to develop! We now have an alternate route to Midgard and the Nine Realms.” “A job well done!” enthused Volstagg. “She must be quite brilliant,” said Fandral with a wink. Jane blushed. “I really couldn’t have done it on my own,” she rushed to say. “I had help from Tony Stark, S.H.I.E.L.D., research from my scientific forebears...” “Nonsense!” said Thor. “They would not, and could not, have managed such a feat without your input.” He offered his arm. “Come, I shall introduce you to the noble spirits of Asgard!” She took it and happily walked off with her armoured knight. Sif watched them go before turning back to the table and pouring herself a tall glass of wine. The sight of the mighty God of Thunder behaving like a giddy schoolboy around this...this human, this woman from Midgard – infuriated her. Sif had fought countless battles together with Thor. Throughout all the dangers they had faced, she had steadily grown closer to him. Slowly, imperceptibly at first, she had begun to develop feelings for him – feelings she had kept largely to herself. It would likely surprise few that she had fallen for Thor. The heir to the throne of the Allfather, he was handsome, brave, and possessed of an unparalleled fighting skill that gave her renewed confidence whenever they flew into battle. Together, they were unstoppable. Sif had hoped her martial prowess might earn her the respect of Thor, and so it had – but little else. Her frustration had built over time, but when it became clear that Thor had fallen for this Earth woman – in the span of not years, but days – she found herself increasingly unable to contain her anger. True, Jane Foster was intelligent and beautiful. But in the end, she was weak, a mere human, and certainly not a suitable companion for the son of Odin. Despite his momentary infatuation, Thor would see that in the end. He must see it, she thought. Sif looked up to see Thor and Jane returning to the table, and quickly finished her glass of wine. If Thor was slow to see her superiority to Jane, it was her task to speed the process. After all, there was no point in delaying the inevitable. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
