Chapter Two Bryce’s body was stored at the Manor until dusk for a night ceremony as was in accordance with the Pagan religion he followed. Killisandra kept herself busy by preparing the braised lamb dish for Merlin, Nya, Callum and herself so that she would not be overcome with grief. She would mourn tonight for her lost brother and pray to the Goddess that She would spirit his soul safely to the Summerland where he belonged whilst his ashes were scattered to the four winds. Merlin arrived just as the sun was setting over the hills and as the villagers plus Sandra had just finished the funeral pyre. The villagers had been fond of Bryce and were sad to see him go. As the ceremony began, led by Merlin, Sandra let the small tears leak from her eyes as she slowly mourned the loss of her brother. As the ceremony ended a light wind picked up scattered the remaining ashes of Bryce’s body to the four winds. The Goddess had arrived to passage his soul to the Summerland. Sandra silently thanked the Mother for traveling with him to the Summerland, so his soul would not be lost on the way there. Merlin laid a hand on Sandra’s shoulder, whilst Callum draped a cloak around her shoulders. In her grief she had not realised that she had fallen to her knees and was now weeping openly. “I will see you soon, my brother…” Killisandra whispered to the wind. **** Nya stood over the battlements early in the morning unable to sleep. She watched as the mist rolled through the valley and listened to the animals as some settled down to sleep as others were waking to greet the day. Yesterday had been so tiring, the thought of losing her brother had made her soul clench with fear. She could only begin to imagine what her sensei was going through of actually losing her brother and could really only compare it to possibly death of her heart. She hoped that her sensei would be able to overcome her grief. Nya sighed and wiped the stray tears from her face before heading down to the garden to pick some mint for the tea she would make for her sensei. Perhaps she could help just make the day easier, a little less hard to bear. She loved her sensei like a sister. She had taught her so much that even she was at first surprised with how much she still did not know. Nya went through the garden and picked the mint before heading to the kitchen. She placed the cast iron teapot on the hearth near the fire and waited for it to heat up. Still lost in her thoughts, she didn’t notice when Merlin entered the kitchen and took a seat at the table. “How are you, Nya?” Nya jumped at the sound and turned around to her smiling Grandfather. “I’m fine, Grandfather, just a little sad.” “Yes, I can see that. Is Sandra awake yet?” “I don’t know, I was about to bring her some tea in bed.” Nya turned back to the now heated water and poured it into a ceramic mug along with the mint leaves. “I will go and see if she’s coherent.” Nya left with a nod from her Grandfather and went up to her sensei’s room. She knocked twice and heard a soft enter before slipping into the room. She found her sensei standing by the window wrapped in her dressing gown, which Sandra had repeated told her was a kimono. “Sensei? I brought you tea.” Nya said quietly. Killisandra turned around and smiled, “thank you Nya. I really appreciate that.” She reached out for the mug and held it in her hands to warm them. “Couldn’t sleep?” “No sensei. How are you feeling?” Nya sat in the window seat and looked up at Sandra. She seemed to glow in the early morning light. “I’m sad to say goodbye to another brother, he was my most trusted friend but I’m sure I will see him again soon. He’s always travelling to places I can’t follow but he comes back eventually, I will just have to await his return.” “Why can’t you follow him sensei?” Sandra looked down at her student and wondered how much she should tell her. She trusted Nya but perhaps it was too early to let her in on who she really was. “Because it’s never my time, one day it might be, but so far, it hasn’t been my time.” Sandra turned back to the window and sighed. “Oh.” Nya gazed out the window. “Merlin’s downstairs in the kitchen.” “Is he looking for early morning breakfast?” Sandra said with a smile. “I don’t think so, he looked serious.” Nya said as she drew her eyebrows together. “Alright, let me get dressed and I shall meet you down there. I just need a quick shower and then I’ll be right down.” Nya rose and walked to the door, “Nya?” “Yes sensei?” “Thank you for my tea, it’s exactly what I needed.” Sandra smiled softly towards her. “You’re welcome sensei.” Nya replied before slipping out into the corridor. Sandra showered quickly before slipping into leggings, a tunic and black flat boots that had numerous amounts of laces up the front. She ran a brush through her hair and began to plait it as she walked down to the kitchen where she knew the Merlin was waiting for her. “Good morning, Merlin,” Sandra said quietly as she slipped into the kitchen. “Good morning, Sandra.” Merlin looked up at her with a grim expression on his face. “What’s wrong?” Sandra asked as she sat down at the table. “I’ve just had a report come to me that is most disturbing.” “And?” “The Saxons have arrived on British soil.” Sandra looked at the Merlin dumbfounded. He had completely deadpanned it so she knew he wasn’t pulling her chain. “You’re kidding, right?” Sandra hoped he was joking. “No.” “Fuck.” “Yep.” “How far away are they?” “They’re on the opposite end of the island at the moment.” “So about a month away from here?” “Give or take a few days.” Killisandra hated the Saxons and with good reason. She had been chasing her soul mate from one end of time to another to spend time with the one she loved. Abraxasus had been one of her soul mate’s incarnations when the Saxons, his own people, had murdered him for falling in love with a foreigner. Killisandra had been pregnant at the time and had held her down to cut the baby from her stomach, believing the wound would kill her. They had left her and her lover and child in the forest to rot. But Sandra had not died. She went back in the cover of darkness and slaughtered everyone in the town. It had been one of her darkest moments. But someone had survived and she became some sort of bogeyman to the Saxons known as the “Death Dealer.” “What is your plan?” Sandra asked the Merlin. “We will fight, obviously. I want to know what you’re going to do.” “Oh.” Merlin looked at her, “will you fight with us?” “Yes, but I will do it in my own way.” “Your own way?” “It’s called guerrilla warfare. It’s similar to what you guys do except a little more covert. I will invoke their fear of me again. The Death Dealer will return.” “Death Dealer?! You’re the Death Dealer?” Merlin asked incredulously. Sandra looked off to the side and sighed. “Yes, I am.” “Damn, I’m glad you’re on our side then.” Merlin looked at her with newfound respect. “I need to ask you a favour.” “Yes?” “Could you go to Hadrian’s Wall and see what the Romans are up to? What their course of action will be?” “Seriously? Well, I guess I can do that, I need to get some more supplies anyway and since the merchant ship that brought that foul bishop here must be wanted to trade some goods, at least it won’t be a completely horrible experience.” “Thank you Killisandra.” Merlin laid a hand on top of hers and squeezed her fingers gently. “You know I can’t say no to you old man.” Sandra smiled at him warmly. “Nya will stay here and make the preparations for a camp and healing centre to be set up here for any injured parties. And I will head out as soon as I make some breakfast. Would you like some?” Sandra asked as she collected the eggs, already knowing the Merlin would accept. **** “But sensei, I want to come!” Nya complained. “Please Nya, I need you here. You need to start to start setting up the healing camps.” Sandra said as she stuffed some clothes into her canvas bag. “Healing camps?” Nya asked perplexed. “Yes, healing camps. Saxons have landed on the far side of the island and Goddess knows what they’re going to be doing to the people they encounter. You’ll be head of the healing camps as you know the most about it besides Merlin and he’s off gathering the elders of the tribes to figure out a battle plan. So please stop whining, I’m going to do some quick recon and head back here for the final preparations.” “Of course, sensei. I didn’t realise. I’ll do as you ask.” Nya replied, a little wide eyed. Sandra glimpsed this from the corner of her eye and turned to reassure her. “I swear to you Nya, that no Saxon will come close to this territory, or so help me Goddess, I will slay them where they stand.” Sandra gave her student a quick hug before darting out the door.
