Saved by a Stranger
Suddenly a rapid knock came to the door of Beckett’s office and before he could answer, it swung open. Letting go of her skirt he stood walking around the couch leaving Bonnie where she fell to see what the interruption was about. “What is all this?” He demanded to know.
Bonnie looked up to see a tall rather strikingly handsome man in a blue and yellow uniform enter the room. He had dark hair and emerald green eyes, and wore a wig that was fashioned in a way that told he held a high rank in the Royal Navy. “I’m not fond of being told to bring in my ship from an important patrol because there was some urgent reason you sent for me, and then to get in to port only to find that you are ‘not to be disturbed’ until morning for no clear reason that anyone can give me.” He said in a very displeased voice.
Beckett looked at him a moment, “Admiral Norrington, I realize that it’s hard for you to accept that the activities and business that goes on here is not the same as you remember it, and not directed by you but by me, but perhaps you should keep that in mind. I do have the final say in most matters concerning the trade and the ships, and all other commerce that comes in and out of this port and nearly all others in the Caribbean.”
“I am not a dog, to be summoned at will and then told to wait after being told to risk life and limb to speed our way through dangerous water to get back here at the earliest possible date. My crew is exhausted and I am not in the habit of risking their lives for no reason.”
Beckett starred at him for another moment. “You are a difficult man James Norrington.” He half smirked, “But I suppose you could be good for business.” Walking around him Beckett disappeared into the next room leaving Norrington standing there. James rolled his eyes feeling as though he had wanted to knock the mans teeth out and shove them down his throat. Just then, a flicker of light and a bit of movement caught his eye as he looked over to see Bonnie carefully and slowly picking herself up from where she fell a little clumsily with how her legs had gotten tangled.
Sitting up, she reached up smoothing the hair back from her face feeling a little helpless and trapped again, now embarrassed at the same time. Her eyes slowly moved towards the Admiral as she looked up at him. When their eyes met, James half smiled feeling embarrassed and if he was intruding. When Bonnie didn’t smile back, and there was a look of sadness and shame in her eyes as they turned downcast, James smile faded as well as he turned his own eyes away. Something about the look in her eyes and the manner in which she carried her body told him that she wasn’t there of her choice and she did not want to be there, at all.
Suddenly, Beckett reappeared in the room carrying several sealed documents in a leather case and handed them to the Admiral. “Here you are, your new orders and several new commissions for the officers that will now be part of your crew.” Norrington took the documents. James put the case under his arm cupping his hands behind his back, as Beckett turned him towards the door anxiously showing him out.
Just then, Norrington acted as though it was the first time the young lady caught him out of the corner of his eye. “Well!! This is a surprise!” He said as a look of surprise crossed his face and he smiled pulling away from Beckett walking towards Bonnie. “I haven’t seen you since you were a little girl about knee high!” he exclaimed.
Bonnie had no idea what was going on but she wasn’t about to not play along and risk the only chance of getting out of her current situation. “James?” She said remembering what Beckett had called him earlier. “James Norrington?” She said acting as though she hadn’t recognized him right away.
“Yes! I’m so pleased you remember me after all these years.” He said walking over and offering her a hand helping her off the floor. She smiled at him and kissed his cheek as he kissed hers as if they were long lost close family friends.
“Bonnie.” She whispered into his ear quickly after she kissed his cheek and pulled away smiling up at him brightly. Beckett watched the exchange a little dumbstruck and a bit uncomfortably.
“You two know each other?” He said with a frown thinking what an awkward situation it would have been had James come in after events that had been planned already unfolded. But he couldn’t help but wonder if this was genuine or not.
“Oh yes, but Bonnie was much younger the last time we crossed paths. Hardly learning to walk as I recall. But I would recognize those eyes and that pout anywhere, she looks so much like her mother.” He said with a chuckle. Touching her chin before wrapping his arm around her shoulders like a brother would. Bonnie quickly wrapped her arm around him doing the same. “You’re a woman now! We’ve so much to catch up on!”
His saying her name and proving that he knew her mother and could see her in her daughter only cemented that Admiral Norrington knew this girl. Beckett felt as though he was going to be slightly ill at the close call of having engaged in inappropriate behavior with this specific girl.
“You’re an Admiral now? Have you a new ship?” She said looking up at him. He nodded.
“Yes, I received my commission several months ago. My ship is in the harbor now, you can see it from the docks.” He looked over to Lord Beckett, “Would it be alright if you excused her for a bit. I’d like to point it out to her, she’s always had a fascination with ships.” Beckett looked between the two of them before smiling.
“No, of course not. We were about to call it an evening. It is getting rather late.”
“Oh, then I would be more then happy to see her home. We could catch up on the way.” He said wrapping her arm around his as he began to lead her towards the door. Beckett arched a brow feeling as though there was something he was missing but wasn’t able to put his finger on it.
The Docks
Bonnie walked with James down to the docks until they were well away from Lord Beckett’s office. “So shall we have proper introductions now?” He said as the strolled along slowly. Bonnie started to look over her shoulder but he quickly pulled her back. “Don’t look over your shoulder, just keep walking with me.”
“My name is Bonnie Rhett.” She said answering his question.
“Admiral James Norrington.” He said introducing himself. “Now, by the look in your eyes, alone with Lord Beckett was the last place in this God forsaken world you wanted to be. So how, may I ask, did you end up there in the first place?”
“I was brought in this morning with a large group of others that were involved in a street riot. I was caught in the middle, but before I could escape I was rounded up with everyone else and brought to the fort. I caught Lord Beckett’s eye, and he ordered that I be bathed and properly dressed and then I was to join him for dinner.” She explained. “Now that I’ve answered your question, I have one of my own.” She said looking up at him. “Why did you help me?”
Norrington looked at her, “You needed help didn’t you?”
She felt as though she had asked her question badly and tried again, “What is it that you want in return.” She asked this time. “Nothing is given for free, not even a helping hand.”
“In this case the fact that I was able to simply ruin Lord Beckett’s evening was payment enough for me.” Norrington said with a small smile. “He tends to be far to reptilian for my tastes. A snake if there ever was one. The fact that he seemed to have press ganged you into a less then desired position only furthers that truth.”
Bonnie paused and looked up at him a few moments not sure if she trusted that. “You are a man of high rank and privilege.” She stated.
“Yes, I suppose I am.” He said confirming her statement. “I can assume by the look in your eye and your suspicions you’ve not had very favorable experiences with men of my station?”
“You could say that.” She said with a sigh. “It seems that they all have one purpose for me and tonight I nearly lost the battle.” Bonnie looked at him for a moment, “Am I to believe that you don’t have the same agenda?”
“I’m not in the habit of demanding such things from unwilling young ladies just because she is poverty stricken.” Bonnie looked at him arching a brow. “You’re giving me a look as though you expect me to look down on you because you’re without money. I don’t.”
“Then you’re quite different from every other man of your station that I’ve encountered.” She said as she turned continuing to walk the docks.
“You seem rather mature for your age.” The Admiral commented as he followed her. “You’ve lived on your own for sometime haven’t you.”
“Since my brother was murdered.” She said ending it there. Not wanting to go into those details twice in one evening. It was a memory she hated recalling. She remembered waiting for days outside the gates not believing the soldiers telling her he was dead.
“You’ve managed to survive on the streets this long by yourself. That’s admirable in a number of ways. Especially when you’ve had the opportunity to become the mistress of wealthy men and turned down the chance.”
“I’m not in the habit of selling my soul to devils for a meal and a place to sleep.” She said crossing her arms over her chest. “A man like Lord Beckett would barter hell from the devil for a better deal if it was ‘good business’.” She said mockingly quoting him from earlier in the evening.
“Your saving yourself for marriage then?” He asked. Then he paused looking at the ground. “I apologize for such a rude and prying question. Of course that was vulgar and inappropriate of me.”
Bonnie raised her brows looking up at him a bit surprised at his reaction hardly expecting him to apologize at all. Hardly expecting anyone to apologize to her ever for anything. “Yes.” She said answering his question since he was treating her like both a human being and a lady. “I am.” Norrington looked up at her a little surprised she answered his bold question. “I may not have any money or anything to give anyone, but at least I have that much. Something special to offer.”
Norrington half smiled at her answer. “You have a unique quality about you Bonnie. One that most young woman in your situation would have lost long before now. And a stubbornness that is going to continue to frustrate men like Lord Cutler Beckett for the rest of your days as a single maid.” He said with a chuckle as he crossed his arms.
“My brother would have wanted me to be a maid on my wedding day.” She said explaining a little about why she felt so strongly about this in particular. “He was considering going into the order . . . when he died.” She crossed her arms over her middle again. “I imagine that the way he talked sometimes, it was his intention to be the one that performed the ceremony should the day have ever come.”
“We now you sound as though you don’t intend to marry.” Norrington said with an arched brow.
She rolled her eyes, “Whose going to marry me, Admiral Norrington?” She questioned. “I don’t trust a living soul. I can’t. Each time that I do, they manage to stab me in the back. Sometimes literally.”
“You are far too young to give up on love now. You’ve only just started in life.” She sighed and walked over to a large crate sitting down on it as she looked at him.
“There’s no such thing as love, Admiral Norrington. Love is just a word written in books and said in fairy stories to help children to go to sleep and sedate them when they are to loud and full of gull.”
James couldn’t argue with her on this to much. He tended to feel the same way after what Elizabeth had done to him. He still felt a slight ache in his heart each time he thought of her and the way she had used him to get Will Turner back. The way she had promised him her hand simply to get him to go after that . . . that black smith. And he fell for it! That was worse then everything else combined. She’d played him for a fool, and to many people knew it.
“Marry me.” Norrington said out of the blue. Bonnie looked at him not sure if he had heard right. The Admiral looked at Bonnie not sure if he had actually said that a loud or had just thought it to himself. “Marry me.” He said again. This time it was a certainty. They both heard it. Loud and clear.
“I’m sorry?” She said a little dumbstruck at his question hardly taking it seriously. “I just met you not more then perhaps 20 minutes ago.”
“Yes, I suppose that’s about right.” James agreed. “We’ve been properly introduced. You know my name, I know yours . . . we’ve been talking for some time . . . I think that we have gotten all the basics pretty much out of the way.”
Bonnie just starred at him. “Are you mad?” She said. “I don’t know you . . . . you don’t know me . . . . I’m a street rat by all standards by men of your station” She exclaimed.
“Perhaps. Perhaps not.” He laughed a little, “Spontaneous isn’t it.” Bonnie just starred at him. He sighed, “Bonnie, . . . may I call you Bonnie?” She just gave him a look before he continued, “I’m not trying to jest with you or make light of a serious matter. I’m actually being quite forward and deadly serious.”
“Why?” She said suspiciously.
“Why not?” He said looking at her. “You are a very attractive young woman. You are witty, intelligent, and educated which is a rare quality for someone in your station. That isn’t meant to be an insult it is cold hard fact. I knew you could read, I saw the way you were studying the books on Beckett’s table, the way you speak is only further proof.” She looked at him a moment a little uneasy at how well he could read her. “You are in need of a good husband and I am in need of a good wife. I think you would fit the position
rather nicely.”
Bonnie raised her brows at that. “Fit the position?” She said looking at him. “Isn’t love something that you require as part of a marriage contract?” She asked a little dumbstruck.
“Oh, I think we can learn to love each other in time.” He said honestly. “The most important part of a marriage contact is finding a young woman such as yourself who would want to enter into a contract of marriage with me.” She still just starred at him dumbstruck not sure what to say.
Introductions
James sat at his desk on his ship writing several orders that were to be distributed through out the fleet before they set sail at the end of the week, signing and sealing each one. A knock came to the door and without looking up from the seal he was currently placing he called for whoever it was to enter. A solider opened the door and Bonnie stepped in wearing a beautiful day dress with a cloak wrapped around her shoulders tied at the neck and her hair in bows and curls.
Norrington looked up to see her and smiled quickly putting down the wax stick and standing to greet her. “Hello darling, I didn’t expect to see you until this evening.” He said as he walked over taking her hands before leaning forward and kissing her cheek. “You know having you on the ship is a bit unusual and not quite recommended, but still, it’s nice to see you.”
She half smiled still not as comfortable with James as he seemed to be with her. “I’m sorry about that, but I really have a bad feeling about this evening. Perhaps we shouldn’t have a dinner party. Not yet anyway, perhaps another time?” She said looking up at him. “I hardly know you, . . . is it really time to introduce me to your peers?” She said a little worriedly.
“It’s to late now dear, the invitations have already been sent. Don’t worry, it’s only a small party. Only a group of perhaps 10, maybe 15 I promise you. We’ve been married nearly a week now and no one has had the privilege of meeting the lovely Mrs. Admiral Norrington as of yet.”
“I know this . . . but in that week I’ve hardly seen you at all. I would think that I would know more about you now then I did when I agreed to marry you and took my vows.” She sighed a little frustrated and confused. “You came back to the ship almost immediately after the ceremony and I was taken to your manor. Does this not seem like a strange arrangement for a marriage to you as it does to me?”
“I know.” He said honestly having felt extremely guilty about leaving her like he had done with no explanation other then there had been work. “All of this must seem very confusing to you I’m sure. But tonight I will be staying with you after the dinner party, and every night thereafter. I’ve finished what needed to be done here and I shall be able to return home now.”
Bonnie froze in place looking at him wide eyed. That wasn’t exactly what she had been looking for. “You’ll be . . . you’ll be staying the night?” She said a little stunned in a nervous voice.
“Yes.” He said with a smile. “I know our wedding night was postponed, and you have every right to be cross with me. But I promise I shall make it up to you, in every way possible.” He said with a smile pulling her closer and cupping her face in his hand looking into her eyes. Bonnie trembled a little still starring back into his gaze.
“I . . . I should be getting back.” She said barely able to whisper, “Getting things ready for our guests.” She said instantly wanting a retreat from the uncomfortable position she had managed to place herself in.
He smiled and nodded. “I shall be home no later then 4pm.” Bonnie nodded and started to turn to leave but Norrington pulled her back and gave her a gentle kiss. She gave him a short brief kiss back and then turned on her heel quickly leaving his cabin and hurrying off the ship.
We Meet Again
“You look lovely.” The maid said as Bonnie looked in her mirror sitting in her bedroom. “Honestly there isn’t one more thing you could do. You’ve gone over everything twice and you look as beautiful and perfect as a painting.” She said. “The guests are waiting and your husband has even arrived. Dinner will be served very soon. You really should join your guests.”
Bonnie nodded before she lowered her eyes twisting her hands about. The maid looked at her for another moment. “What’s wrong miss?” She asked looking at her in the mirror. “You look so unhappy. The Admiral will be staying with you tonight. Doesn’t that give you some joy?”
“I don’t belong here.” Bonnie whispered a slight tremor in her voice. “I don’t know what I was ever thinking.” Her hands were shaking in her lap as she closed her eyes and squeezed her hands together against her stomach trying to calm down.
“Of course you do Miss. Admiral Norrington chose you to be his wife didn’t he? That makes you belonging enough.” Bonnie opened her eyes and looked into the mirror again.
Downstairs James mingled comfortably with the crowd that he had known for sometime as he was congratulated on his recent although unannounced and rather sudden marriage. “Yes, well, the life of an Admiral.” He commented as a chuckle went through the room as they seemed to understand his statement.
“Ah, Lord Beckett.” James said greeting his employer, “I wasn’t sure you would be able to make it this evening.” He said as a servant came by and Beckett took a glass of wine from the tray before the servant moved on to the next guest.
“Far be it from me to miss this joyous occasion of the Admiral of my fleet James. It wouldn’t do at all. That’s simply bad business.” He said giving a smile to James, who returned it. “I don’t see our Mistress of honor anywhere.” He stated.
“Yes, she hasn’t come down yet. I suppose wanting to look her best for our company and all. Nervous to meet everyone for the first time. She came to the ship earlier and was worried that perhaps we should cancel this evening and wait until another time to invite everyone to dinner.”
“I was told that you haven’t taken any time at all away from your work and spent every night since your marriage on the ship. I’m certain that hasn’t made for very good communications between the two of you and made you rather unpopular.” Beckett said with a small smirk.
“As you would say, it’s bad business to leave matters half undone and neglect work that needed to be seen to.” He said irritated that he had pointed it out so joyously. He had hated not being able to stay with Bonnie before tonight but he knew what a fit would be thrown if he didn’t get the work that needed to be done out of the way first.
The maid who had been assisting Bonnie came down the stairs and that caught James eye signaling him that Bonnie would be the next one to decent the stairs. He smiled as he saw her approaching the landing. Without another word to Beckett he turned and walked towards the bottom of the stairs looking upwards.
One by one the rest of the party looked upwards as well as all eyes turned to Bonnie. She nervously looked at all the guests who seemed to be looking her over, perhaps judging her on her first impression. After a moment of silence, the guests started to applaud in approval and James smiled still keeping his eyes on Bonnie. A small smile swept Bonnie’s face as she felt a little better.
Beckett wasn’t paying to much attention and finally looked up to see the young woman. When he did he froze in place and his eyes widened a bit. He recognized her rather quickly, having hardly forgotten her. The conquest who just barely escaped on a whim.
James reached up offering her his hand and Bonnie continued on her way down the stairs taking his hand as he escorted her into the guests to introduce her to everyone. Beckett watched the two, especially the young girl and drained his glass setting it on a servants tray picking up a full one as he began to drink that one as well.
Scathing Congratulations
Bonnie stole away onto the terrace for a few moments to catch a breath of fresh air. Needless to say she was overwhelmed by everything and hardly expected to be so well accepted among James peers. Not to many questions were asked about her family, it didn’t seem to be the most important thing in the world, therefore she didn’t have to answer where she had to come from directly. She had expected things to be quite different and much more exclusive then they had turned out to be. Apparently being the new wife of the Admiral canceled out quite a bit. Of course there was quite a lot of political strain with the East India Trading Company taking over almost everything, and the pirate trouble in the surrounding seas which only helped to take focus off small and petty social matters.
She looked out towards the docks where James ship and several others were put into port for the time being, to be fitted for repairs and other such necessities. The lamps of the town were lit and there was a pleasant warm Caribbean breeze that seemed to sweep over the island.
“Quite the star studded evening tonight, isn’t it.” A voice said breaking the silence. Bonnie frowned as her heart sunk in her chest a little recognizing that voice. “A number of the military’s finest, not to mention the governor and the most prominent families in the Caribbean, as well as yours truly . . . all anxious to meet Admiral Norrington’s new young bride.” Bonnie’s eyes turned downcast as she felt a chill run down her spine.
Lord Beckett approached her and looked out over the view that Bonnie had been admiring and enjoying until he had invaded her quiet space. “All of this must be terribly exciting for you. Much better accommodations then those of the lower dungeons in the fort.”
“Hush.” She said quickly hoping no one would have heard that. “It isn’t my wish to embarrass James tonight. You cannot tell me that you would be any less embarrassed to have it known that the wife of your Admiral was a prisoner in the stockade.”
“Do you know what I despise the most about the female race, the way they can so easily lie to one man as to another and think nothing of it. As though there was no wrong in it at all. Thinking that it will never come back to haunt them in the end.” He said sipping his drink.
“I never asked to warm your bed. That was a plot devised solely in your own mind Lord Beckett.” She said looking at him. “You forced me to lie to you, so that I would be free of you. That was of your own doing, not mine.”
Beckett looked at her, “So you went so far as to marry Admiral Norrington to run from me, is that it?” He said looking at her.
She narrowed her eyes at him, “Once you were out of my sight, you didn’t pass as another thought in my mind again. I married James because he asked me to. You were a forgotten memory already by then.”
Beckett’s look darkened as he threw the wine glass over the railing and seized her arm when she started to move away to halt her retreat. “You don’t belong here. You’re hardly a suitable choice for a wife for anyone of James or my station . . . you are a mistress at most. You’ll realize that soon enough, and when you do . . . you’ll wish you at least had the mind to stay with me instead of pledging yourself in the bonds of marriage which are impossible to break.”
“Take your hands off me, I’ve had enough of your touch to last me a life time!” She hollered at him struggling to break herself free.
“Bonnie.” A voice said from the doorway. Instantly the struggle stopped as the two looked up to see the Admiral standing there. Quickly Bonnie smacked Cutler’s hands away from her and straightened her blouse. “Our guests are beginning to leave. You’ll want to say goodnight.” She nodded and quickly hurried up the stairs past James straightening her sleeve feeling embarrassed and ashamed that he had seen that.
James just stood there for another moment watching Beckett after Bonnie had disappeared into the house. “She’s quite beautiful James, I must congratulate you again on your good taste.” Cutler commented as he walked up the steps towards the house.
“Thank you. She’s quite lovely. I consider myself quite fortunate.” The two men exchanged glances as Beckett walked past him back into the house.
