The Ties That Bind
Chapter One
Will frantically held up his arms,
desperately trying to fend off his attackers. There were four of them
surrounding him, and he was backed against a wall. They were in a
dark alley off the street that led to his dorm building. Suddenly,
the scene shifted, and he was no longer in the alley. Instead, he was
in a building with a dirt floor, and it was stifling hot. He was
younger, probably about fourteen or fifteen, and he was trying to
present the smallest target possible for the large, drunk man that
was pommeling him. Then he came, Will's savior, silhouetted in the
bright light that flooded through the door.
Then, it was his junior year, and
they had just moved in together. Not in a romantic capacity, but in
the “two co-eds can't afford rent” kind of way, or at
least, it began that way. That was until Will tripped over a stray
box that hadn't yet been put away and landed in his roommate's lap.
Before either of them could control themselves, they were locked into
an intense kiss that left them both breathless. However, the scene
again altered, and they were outside, in a somewhat colonial looking
setting, and his breath was caught in his throat as he gazed into
those beautiful eyes. This kiss was more tentative, more unsure, but
still heartfelt. And yet, something was missing, something Will felt
he should have known.
He felt this overwhelming amount of
love for someone and from this someone in return. But it was not this
man...
Will woke with a
start. He hated dreams such as these. They always left him so
confused, and yearning for something, and he didn't know what it was.
He sat up in bed and looked down at the dark-haired figure laying
next to him. He cared about him, no doubt about that. He had met him
his freshman year of college, when the man was a sophomore, but he
was about three years younger than him. Will had always felt the need
to learn all that he could, which led to him beginning college early.
He felt as if he had to find the answer to some mysterious question,
and that it was crucial that he find it.
He was distracted
from his reverie as a muscular arm snaked its way around his naked
waist and pulled him gently back onto the bed.
“Dreaming again, I see,”
the soft voice of his lover said. “Take my advice, put them out
of your mind, Will. There is no use in worrying yourself to death
over them.”
“I can't help it, James. I can
feel this growing sense of urgency that can't be ignored.”
James wrapped his
arms around Will and pulled him close against his chest. “Just
sleep for now. Nothing can be done tonight.”
Will sighed as he
buried his face deeper into his lover's neck and marveled again at
what he had done to deserve a man like James Norrington, but why did
it feel so wrong to be with him?
OoooOoooOoooO
After Will had fallen back to sleep,
James tightened his hold on him, knowing they could not keep this up
forever. They both remember each other from a life that they had
apparently lived sometime in the 1700s, but they remembered little
else. Will knew that he had been a blacksmith at one time, but
seemed to believe that had not lasted for long. James remembered
being in the navy, rising in the ranks quickly, but also dropping
quickly, and then rising again. It made no sense to either one of
them. What they both knew beyond doubt was that their love was not
meant to be, that the one they loved more than life itself waited for
them elsewhere. But they were reluctant to let go.
However, lately, Will seemed to fear
that if they didn't soon, something terrible would happen. What, he
couldn't say, but he was certain they should not ignore this ominous
feeling. He was especially spooked by the incident that happened at
the beach the other day.
It was supposed to be just a relaxing
day on the shore of the Pacific, one of the last they would be able
to have before they entered the tedious semester ahead of them.
After all, with it being both Will's last year of grad school and
James' last year of law school, they would both have a lot on their
plates in the months ahead. However, when Will stepped into the
water, he became rigid with fear before going into a full-blown panic
attack.
It had taken James two hours to get him
to calm down enough to question him about what happened. When
pressed, he revealed that he heard a voice inside his head, warning
him that he didn't have a lot of time left.
“It was a woman's voice, with a
strange accent, maybe Jamaican, but not quite,” he had related.
“She said that if I didn't stop wasting my time with you and
find the one I love, we would all be doomed.”
James knew better than to doubt the
validity of Will's claim. If he said he heard a voice in his head,
then James believed that there was a voice in his head. But what the
warning meant, neither of them knew, but they began bracing their
hearts for what they knew they had to do.
