Chapter Two - Shadows
There had been no trouble, that woman as Gibb continued to
call Maia, had kept to herself and apart from occasionally catching her
studying him, clear eyes seeming to weigh and measure, she had had barely said two
words. That made him uneasy, that she
could watch him like that then just glance away. Gibbs had muttered about it only the evening
before, when he had taken over the wheel, that she seemed to be looking into
your very soul, that or that she was watching things that only she could
see. Jack too had noticed how her eyes
moved as if she was following invisible figures, listening to voices that only
she could hear.
She was watching him now, of that he was certain. His neck was tingling, he turned his head to
meet her eyes, she did not look away as other women would have but met his gaze
until he had to look elsewhere. Later he
knew he would find himself thinking that he should have done something to show
that he was not bothered by that cool green stare. But it was always afterwards that the witty
response came to mind, the perfect comment that would have broken that
tension. Next time he would mutter
making the crew look sideways at his talking to himself.
There had been no trouble though and Gibbs grumblings had
grown less each day as his dire predictions had failed to eventuate. Smooth sailing, brisk breezes and harmony
amongst the crew, fair weather indeed until they had reached Petit Goave.
The Black Pearl had docked in the late afternoon, the usual
arguments had raged until Jack had the crew draw lots as to who was to go
ashore and who was to remain behind. He
had made his way to the bow to speak with Maia, offering her accompaniment of
the burly sort if she wished to go ashore.
She had nodded, thanking him in that slightly husky voice, stating that
she intended to remain aboard. He had
nodded in return, not believing a word that had left those curved lips. Curved lips, now where the hell had that
thought come from. Best not to be thinking
things like that, not with one of her kind.
He had walked back to his cabin, thoughtful. Abandoning his usual habit of sauntering to
the nearest drinking establishment he had dismissed his companions, instead
wandering about in his room, picking up maps putting them back. Waiting for what he was unsure, just a sense
of unease keeping him on his feet, pacing backwards and forwards until he heard
Maia’s voice drifting from above deck.
Her voice was quiet, firm and Jack leaned against the wall
trying not to breathe, trying to hear what she was saying, something about
going ashore.
“Bloody women” he muttered the words under his breath even
as he clamped his hat on his head, opening his door to stride up on deck. Young Nick was watching Maia disappear into
the darkness a worried frown on his face.
“She insisted on going on her own Captain.”
“Aye I heard lad” Jack clapped a hand on Nick’s shoulder
“not to worry, I’ll keep an eye on her.”
“But Captain there are no men to accompany you.”
Jack gave a wicked grin and twirled his sword “Don’t you be
worrying about old Jack son.”
But Nick still looked worried as he watched his Captain
follow the woman into the darkness.
She could move silently, he acknowledged that as he followed
her, darting from shadow to shadow. She
seemed unsure of where she was going, stopping to stare down narrow alleyways,
consulting a scrap of paper that was crumpled in one hand before once more
moving slowly through the darkened streets.
Jack heard them before he saw the shadowy figures that stalked her,
furtive footsteps, muffled voices that made the back of his neck prickle. His
eyes instinctively drawn to the ghostly silhouettes that haunted the places
where dim light gave way to deep black.
Two of them, he swore viciously in his head and quietly loosened his
sword. He waited for the rush, noticing
how suddenly she stood very still, turning around to face the very spot in
which evil lurked.
“You may wish to reconsider” her voice was very clear,
strong, sure as she spoke into the night.
There was no answer just a sudden flurry of movement as two
men leapt from the shadows, cruel eyes shining.
She sighed, Jack heard that even as
he ran towards her. A loud sigh and her
words.
“So be it then” and she raised one hand pointing to the
first man, an expression of extreme sadness passing across her face. The man stopped suddenly horror on his face
before he screamed, dropping his sword to clamp his hands across his eyes. His companion halted, staring at his mate who
had dropped whimpering to his knees, shaking his head over and over his voice
pleading no, again and again. Wary now
the second attacker began to advance, slowly, each step deliberate. Another sigh and Maia began to raise her hand
again her eyes tight, but before she could extend her palm in front of her Jack
was there, the tip of his blade on the other man’s throat.
“I suggest you and your cowering friend take your ventures
elsewhere” his voice was cold, his eyes even colder.
The man looked from Jack to Maia, then back to his sobbing
mate.
“Who are you?”
Jack drew himself up “Captain Jack Sparrow, best you
remember it.”
“No her” a shaking hand pointed at Maia “her
the witch woman.”
Maia’s face was closed and she shook her head before turning
away, Jack studied her for a moment the turned back to the two.
“Run” he hissed “before I change my mind.”
Scrambling they gathered their weapons, stumbling with many
backwards glances into the night.
He watched then run, returning his blade to his belt he
looked over at Maia; she stood arms crossed beneath her breasts, eyes
unreadable.
“That was unnecessary Jack” she did not look at his face.
”So I saw” he stepped forward “what did you do to him”
“I showed him his greatest fears” her voice was very soft,
regretful, sad and when her eyes met his he saw tears glistening. He did not
look away, though something in his head was screaming at him to be wary, to not
look too long. But he ignored that
voice, looking deeply into that clear unblinking green. There was a flicker within the depths,
surprise he thought and he felt like he was being pulled from his body, he
flinched when a cool hand touched his arm.
“Unnecessary Jack, but very thoughtful, thank you.”
A long silence and Jack swallowed “welcome…I think.” He
reached up, pushing his hat more firmly on his head.
“So where are you heading Maia, it may be easier on everyone
if I was to accompany you”
She looked like she was about to refuse and he held a hand
up, stopping her, a gesture that seemed to again shock her, she stared at him,
sighed and handed him the paper. Jack
shook his head when he saw the name, he would have preferred to have gone to
whatever drinking establishment the crew were currently carousing in and to
have dragged their sorry skins along with him. But instead he would accompany
Maia and hope for the best.
“So you do that often?” they were walking side by side.
She glanced at him, a dark eyebrow arching in a
question.
Jack waved a ringed hand, “pulling fears out of people’s heads.”
“No…yes” she rubbed a hand over her face “more than I would
like to.”
Jack’s mouth moved just slightly and his face worked, “can
you see what I am thinking then?”
“No Jack” Maia looked at him “it would not be polite”
“Right” he did not really understand that but continued
“what about my fears then?”
“We all have fears Jack” Maia had a soft smile on her face.
“I don’t want to be knowing mine luv” Jack spoke quickly tugging at his beard.
“You already do Jack” her voice was very quiet and she
turned to look out into the night “you and I both have seen our fears Jack and
we live with them every day”
There was nothing to say to that, in silence they began to
walk again.
