The first day of high school was really like every other day students had to attend save that some faces were gone and new faces were around. Everywhere was a chaos of the student body. Most of the busses had already arrived. For some reason the Freshman bus was always the last one to land but it gave the rest time to re-establish their social groups and make certain everyone else knew their place in the pecking order. Even if this was Sky High, the Superhero High School, things here were much the same as they were for regular citizens.
By the second day of school almost everything had settled. There were no more sudden tremors caused by Coach Boomer's voice branding the Freshmen into their separate casts. Likewise the newest meat was educated very thoroughly as to their place in the school and lunch room. Most people were busy catching up with their summer activities and the generalized gossip had not begun just yet so relationships and reputations were still rather safe.
Here or there one could find a Sidekick being hassled by the usual bullies. Of course so far there were no bullies that rivaled Speed and Lash's records for between-class abuse. As Warren scanned the grounds after lunch with a dark glower, he took note of the group that still insisted on infringing on his space. He could tolerate them but that was about as far as it went. Stronghold and the Hippy were by the steps talking. The Popsicle was nearby though Glowworm and Goth-Girl were at a bit of a distance doing something else.
Shouldering his pack he decided to avoid the entire group for as long as he could being trapped on a floating island some hundred miles up and moved toward one of the lesser-noticed grass areas. The usual racket faded a bit once he was around the corner. Unfortunately, his usual spot was...occupied.
"Just what do you think you're doing here?"
Uncurling a little, the intruder glanced up from the book. Warren had seen her around before but never paid any attention. She had straight hair he supposed was light brown pulled back in a high ponytail and wore a pair of black wire-rim glasses. Her skin was a little sunburned but seemed to be rather pale really. A pair of blue denim cut-offs and a midnight-blue T-shirt sporting a white symbol for the Air Force was all she wore in addition to her battered and scruffy-looking blue and white shoes.
"What's it look like?"
"This is my spot." He hardly cared if that sounded childish.
Warren was suddenly treated to a look that rivaled his own glare and she was not even frowning, just looking at him over the tops of the glasses. "You forgot to leave your name here then."
"Get out."
The girl had gone back to her book. "There's room. You want to sit, sit."
Already his temper was beginning to flare. How could he get her to move on her own? It would hardly do to be sent to detention or get suspended for roasting a student. There had to be something he could use against her. Her name still escaped him even if he knew they had a few classes together. Digging, he suddenly remembered seeing her with a few people, one in particular.
"Aren't you Sparky's ex?"
If he were the paranoid sort--or a Sidekick for that matter--the sudden dead stillness of the air and the nearly tangible drop of temperature would have made him uneasy. Slowly, the girl's head rose and again Warren was given that Look-to-Kill.
"Aren't you Freon's?"
Both of them were absolutely still and very tense. Had anyone chanced by to see them they might have been graced to see the lightning bolts passing between the pairs of glaring eyes. Warren's temper was flaring dangerously but he managed to hold it back. Apparently the gossip factories had started up earlier than he realized. It seemed things were at a standstill.
What truly broke the standoff was the faintest click of a plastic clip being snapped into place. Both Warren and the girl turned their heads to look toward the source of the sound. Another kid stood there. Native American was the first thing that screamed at Warren due to the copper tone of his skin and the long black hair falling over his face past his shoulders. The ripped blue jeans and red T-shirt both appeared worn. A simple tan pack rested over one of his shoulders.
"Gavin."
This name came from the girl. It was enough for Warren to recall who this boy was. Gavin Dovev, the Mute Sidekick. He was an oddity even among those attending Sky High. Still, he could honestly care less at the moment since the girl was rising and dusting herself off. It meant she was leaving. Good. It also meant he really should know who the girl was since Gavin was always seen with her. For the life of him, Warren could not remember the name.
Ignoring them as they walked off together, he turned to reclaim his spot and sit down. Leaning back against the school's wall, he pulled a book from his bag and opened it to read. Hopefully he could get at least another chapter or two done before the bell rang again.
