Chapter 2 – The council meeting
Rick barely managed to
keep the despair from showing on his face. It wasn't that he doubted
Ardeth's love for him, but he was also aware of the Med-jai's
absolute devotion to his tribe. Fearing that Ardeth was about to end
their relationship for the sake of his people, Rick closed his eyes
as he awaited the words, that would quickly end his recently acquired
happiness.
“I will refuse them.”
Stunned Rick looked
over to his lover. Determination was visible on the Med-jai's
handsome face as he smiled at Rick. Now that was unexpected. He had
expected Ardeth to do a lot of things, but to put him before his
tribe hadn't been amongst them. Too shocked to speak he waited for
the Med-jai to continue.
Seeing the look of
shock on Rick's face Ardeth bend down and hauled his lover into a
standing position. Their bodies were pressed close to each other as
he captured Rick's lips in a warm loving kiss, his tongue demanding
entry into the moist cavern of the other man's mouth. Feeling as if
his body was melting under Ardeth's sensual assault Rick threw his
arms around the Med-jai's neck.
The need for breath
ended their kiss all too soon and they broke apart again.
“I need to go. The other
leader's will be insulted if I don't go to the meeting soon.”
Rick was reluctant to let go of his lover, but he knew that he didn't
have a choice. His lips were captured in another quick kiss, before
Ardeth swept out of the hut.
Watching Ardeth's
swirling robe disappear through the door Rick sank down onto the bed.
Hopefully everything would go well and they would finally be able to
be together without hiding.

Ardeth had never been
nervous before a council meeting, but that day he desperately wished
to be somewhere else while he strode towards the meeting hut. None of
his worries showed on his face as he confidently entered the hut.
This was already going
worse than he had expected at first. The tribes' leaders seemed to be
absolutely determined to have him marry, since the twelve women that
had been chosen for him were already present. Ardeth had thought
about breaking the news to them relatively gently, but judging by the
stern faces of twelve leaders looking at him, he probably wouldn't
even get the chance.
He might be the leader
of all Med-jai, but since he was also the youngest, the older leaders
expected him to follow their council. Greeting the assembled party
Ardeth strode over to his chair, waiting for someone to speak up.
“My leader, the council has
already discussed the problem of your marital status in countless
meetings.” Tamir, the leader of the fifth tribe, continued
“Since it has already been agreed upon, that you will chose a
bride, we have once again gathered the best woman of each tribe
here.”
Ardeth couldn't
remember ever having agreed to marrying, but it was true that he
hadn't exactly refused either. Knowing that Tamir could prattle on
for hours, praising each of the women, he simply interrupted the
older man. “I have never given my consent to marry one of these
women.”
“Ardeth.” Muhammad, the
leader of the third tribe, started. “I am well aware of your
reluctance to marry, but the council has decided that it would be
best for the tribe.” The older man knew him quite well, since
he had become something of a substitute father after his own had
died. But he was unawares that his reluctance to marry didn't stem
from his sense of duty, but rather his disinterest in women.
“You are without a partner and
you won't find better wifes than these. It would be foolish to
refuse.” Another of the leaders piped in.
Deciding that the
discussion had to end Ardeth stood up. His lack of a lover was their
main argument for forcing him to marry, so hopefully they would give
up, if he told them that they were wrong. “I can not marry for
the simple reason, that it would be a betrayal against my lover. I
refuse to marry somebody else.” Maybe he could get away without
revealing his relationship with Rick, since he was sure that the
other leaders would protest. Normally a same sex relationship
wouldn't be a problem, but they expected him to produce an heir.
“And who would the honored
woman be, I ask myself?” Rashid, leader of the twelfth
tribe asked. Ardeth should have known that he would cause trouble,
since the older Med-jai had disliked him from the very day that he
had become their leader. Now that the others' curiosity had also been
piped, they ordered the women to leave the hut, before expectantly
staring at Ardeth.
“Rick O'Connell.” His
stance was proud as he told the other leaders of his lover. Although
he knew that he would get retributed for it, he was neither ashamed
of Rick nor willing to give him up because of the council's decision.
The noise level increased dramatically as almost all leaders started
to speak at once, the shocked looks on their faces telling Ardeth
what exactly they thought about his decision.
“He isn't a member of our
tribe.” “But he's a man.” “He won't bear you
children.” The leaders all attacked him with one argument or
another, not even giving him the chance to defeat himself, until
Tamir bellowed for them all to be silent.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As silence settled over
the hut the battle-hardened Med-jai started to talk: “My
leader, we do not expect you to give up your lover.” The rest
of the council started murmuring again, but quickly fell silent when
Tamir glared at them.
Ardeth waited for him
to continue to speak. He was disappointed
by the reactions of the other leaders. This
was the first time they had ever questioned one of his decisions.
They had always completely supported him even if some of his
decisions had seemed too risky or too rash in their eyes. But now
they questioned a decision that he had made with his heart rather
than his head and being questioned in that regard by people, whom he
was supposed to lead, just hurt.
“Like I was saying, you can
keep your lover, but you also have to keep your duty to the tribes in
mind.” Tamir continued, “You could still marry one of the
women and have her bear your children. Nobody would be adverse if you
kept your lover as a side entertainment, but the tribes' well-being
has to be your foremost concern.”
Angered by the other's
words Ardeth acted quickly. Before the other Med-jai knew what was
happening, Ardeth's sword was already pressed to his throat. There
were a lot of things he could take, but Rick being referred
to as a 'side entertainment' was not one of them. The other council
members wisely kept out of the confrontation, while Tamir's eyes
widened in fear.
Ardeth knew that he
could look dangerous, when he wanted to and he used it to his full
advantage at the moment. “If you ever insult Rick again, Tamir,
your tribe will need a new leader.” The other man had paled
considerable at the threat, feebly nodding his head as Ardeth drew
back his sword.
The tension in the hut
was almost unbearable. He could feel that the other Med-jai still
objected to his decision, but due to his little display none of them
dared to speak, which angered him almost as much as their dislike of
Rick. As Med-jai they were supposed to say and do what they deemed
right by their own consciences, never
fearing the consequences. And now not one
of the supposedly fearless leaders dared to speak.
“I have made my decision
clear. There will be nobody but Rick by my side.” Turning
around and looking at the warriors gathered around him he asked:
“Have my decisions ever lead us astray? Have they ever brought
more suffering than was unpreventable? If
you so question me, then tell me that they have.”
Most of the council
remained silent, until Muhammad spoke up. “Your decisions have
always been good for our people. After the fight against Anubis' army
you have united the tribes bringing back happiness and a new chance.”
“If that is true, then as your
leader, I ask you to allow me my own happiness. “ Having said
all he wanted to and desperately longing to be with Rick again,
Ardeth stormed out of the hut. He knew that most of his fellow
leaders weren't convinced, but he had seen acceptance
at least in Muhammad, whose opinion as his substitute father meant a
lot to him.
