Chapter 2 –
(Happy) Reunion
“Ardeth!”
He
had completely missed, what the chief of the Third tribe had been
going on about. It was unusual for the Med-jai leader to be
inattentive during an important meeting, but he had gotten some
strange news the night before.
Some
of his tribesmen had been assigned to watch the O'Connell's house in
Cairo and inform him in case they came to Egypt. Last night a
messenger had come and told him that Evelyn had arrived. Alone. He
had pondered this the whole night, because she had never come to
Egypt without O'Connell ever since they had married. Wondering what
was going on, Ardeth had been distracted from the council meeting.
“The council has picked some
suitable brides, my leader.”
'Great.
I should better follow this thing.' The tribe leaders had been
nagging him about marrying since the fight
against Anubis' army. They were of the opinion, that he had to set an
example for his tribesmen and marry, because their numbers had been
so diminished. He had successfully fought of all suggestion of
marriage over the years, by telling them that his duties didn't leave
him the time for a wife. But now this just didn't work anymore and
the chieftains were getting insistent.
'I've
faced Mummies and Anubis' army, how much worse can a wife be?', the
Med-jai warrior chastised himself.
“We have chosen the best
female of every tribe. You may choose between them as you didn't find
a bride by yourself.”
After
the leader of the Seventh tribe had finished his announcement, twelve
young women filed into the hut. Ardeth could see that all of them
were beautiful, but they simply didn't raise his interest. In fact,
women had never raised his interest. Not when his cousins had
introduced him to a brothel in Cairo and definitely not now.
But
the chieftains would never take no for a decision and if he didn't
choose at least one of them, all of the tribe leaders would be
offended. Wanting to avoid quarreling amongst the tribes, Ardeth
resigned himself to picking one of them.
After
taking some time, he had just decided to randomly choose, when the
door of the hut was thrown open and two messengers barged in. They
greeted the assembled council before they launched into their report.
“ The book of Isis has been
stolen last night.”
The
second one added: “ And the rest of the O'Connells have arrived
this morning.”
Before
one of the assembled chieftains could protest, Ardeth was out of the
door, followed by the two messengers. Sending a quick prayer of
thanks to Allah, he turned around to the young Med-jai warriors.
“Tell me more.”

Rick,
Alex and Jonathan had looked for Evy all over Cairo, without finding
the slightest clue of her whereabouts. It was already noon and the
sun was beating down mercilessly. All three of them were sweaty and
extremely frustrated.
Deciding
to continue the search later, although they had no idea where else
they should look, the three of them went back home.
Rick
was the first to enter the house and he immediately knew that
something was off. Motioning to Jonathan and Alex to stay behind, he
went further into the house. Scanning the room he tried to determine,
what was different from when they left.
The
door at the left wall of the room. Rick was certain that he had
closed it before they left and now it stood slightly ajar. 'Maybe Evy
is here.' But experience had taught him to be careful,
so he crept slowly towards the door. Pressing himself into the wall
next to the door he waited, before suddenly rounding the corner. The
hallway was empty.
Rick
carefully went over to the first door on the right. Slowly pressing
down the door handle, he swung the door open.
And
found himself faced with a machine gun.

Ardeth
lowered the gun as soon as he recognized O'Connell.
“My friend. Good to see you
again.”
Within
seconds he found himself thrown up against
the wall, pinned by an angry looking Rick. “What are you doing
here? Where is my wife? And what the fuck is going on here?”
“Put me down. I'll explain.”
Ardeth
sat down on the nearby chair. He was glad that his voluminous robes
hid, what being thrown up against the wall by O'Connell did to him.
Rick was pacing the room like a caged tiger and finally stopped in
front of the Med-jai, looking for answers.
“The book of Isis has been
stolen.”
“What does that have to do
with Evy being gone?”
“I don't know where your wife
is at the moment. But some of my people were watching the museum
where the book was kept. Your wife took it.”
“Are you insane? Why would she
do such a thing?” Jonathan and Alex had arrived, because they
had heard shouting, but no shots and had assumed that it was save.
“My friend, has she been
acting strange as of late?”
Rick
sat down on another chair. “Yes. Before she left she said that
she's Nefertiri. Something about Egypt being as it was or something
like that.”
“This my friend is bad news.”
“How bad?”
“Really bad.”
“Care to enlighten us?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Alex
and Jonathan had sat down on the floor as there were no chairs left.
“If this is really Nefertiri,
she will try to use the Mirror of Osiris.”
“That's not a good thing, is
it?”, Jonathan threw in.
“No. I think she wants to
change the world back to how it was, when the pharaohs ruled.”
“Why would she do such a
thing, she helped us at Ahm-Shere.”
“Not much is known about
Nefertiri, but she knows no other world than that and the mirror
would give her the power to make it real. At Ahm-Shere all that
mattered was her revenge against Ankh-su-namun and Imhotep. The
legends tell, that she was a vicious and cruel woman after her
father's death. She ordered for the curse to be placed upon Imhotep.”
Rick
got up from his chair. “So you are saying, that we have to stop
her somehow?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
