Chapter 2 – The letters
By the time Dom and Mia
arrived at Brian's house, both of them were quite worried. Though
Dominic would never admit it, he had the distinct feeling, that
something was very wrong. Mia was sitting quietly next to him and
chewing on her bottom lip. A habit she only picked up when she was
really nervous. As the two of them rounded the last corner and
Brian's home came into view a sense of dread settled in Dom's
stomach.
'Shit, his car's gone.'
Mia got out of the car
and rung the doorbell a couple of times. After waiting for five
minutes without getting an answer she trudged back to the car. She
looked really worried and all Dom could think was, ' Brian, you
better show up again or she's gonna kill your ass for having her
worried.'.
“Let's go home, Mia. He'll
most likely show up at the garage tomorrow. Don't worry. I'm sure
he's okay.” That wasn't really anywhere near the truth, because
Dom was absolutely not sure, that Brian was ok and was generally
worried sick. But no use telling that to his sister. Would be a
little hard to explain anyway, without sounding completely pathetic.
And he didn't do pathetic after all.

The next morning Mia
fetched the mail. She wondered about the plain envelope that had
Dom's name written on it, but no clue where it came from. There was a
similar letter addressed to her. Shrugging she went back into the
house to make breakfast. Dom was already sitting at the kitchen table
drinking a pot of pitch black coffee. Putting her own letter away for
later, she threw the other envelope on the kitchen table.
“You got mail.”
Dom just grunted
something unintelligible into his coffee and snatched the letter up
from the table top. He turned it around to see who had sent it, but
couldn't find a name on it. While he was looking for a knife to open
the envelope Mia asked offhandedly: “Have you heard from Brian
yet?”. After being back from their little trip to his home, Dom
had called Brian and told his mailbox, that he should call back. He
didn't tell Mia, that he was awake half of the night waiting for that
call. This lack of sleep was also the reason for his grumpy mood.
“No, he hasn't called yet.” was the sourly answer he gave
his sister. Showing some nerves she snapped at him, “Fine, make
your own fucking breakfast. I'm going up to my room.”
Sighing about his
sisters temper, Dom opened the letter.
Dom,
I need to come clear
about some things. I'm a cop. I was sent under to find out who was
hijacking some trucks. The FBI is pretty sure that it's you but they
got no evidence. It was my job to get that. I'm sorry for having lied
to you, but I can't do that any more. Not after everything I've
learned about you. I may have lied about loads of things but your
friendship really meant something to me.
If it's really you
jacking the trucks you gotta stop. The truckers are arming
themselves.
I'm leaving L.A. I
doubt you'll ever see me again. So take care.
Brian
Dom
was absolutely shocked and hurt and mad as hell. He re-read the
letter again and again, but the truth just didn't go away. There was
only one thing he could do. He needed to think and there was solely
one way to achieve that at the moment. Grabbing his leather jacket
Dom stormed out of the door and jumped in his car. He barely heard
Mia call out to him, but that didn't stop him from driving out of the
parking space at full speed. Mia, who had come down to see what was
going on stood in the door and watched her brother disappear at the
end of the street. She had no idea what was going on and went
confused back to her room. 'Maybe it was the letter.' Figuring that
her own letter would probably wield some answers she opened it.
Hey Mia,
I'm sorry that I
didn't go to dinner with you yesterday. But there are some things you
need to know. I'm a cop. I was supposed to get into the team to find
out about some truck hijackings.
I didn't mean to
hurt you or lie to you. But I really care about you. I won't lie to
you and tell you that I'm in love with you.
I have to leave L.A.
I won't be coming back, so you won't have to see me ever again. I
hope you can somehow forgive me.
Brian
Mia
couldn't believe what she read, but at least it explained why Dom had
been so upset. Thinking about her brother she was suddenly afraid,
what he would do. 'Damn, he was fuming when he left. I have to reach
him before he does something stupid.' Getting out her phone she tried
to call Dom, but he didn't answer his phone. At a loss what else she
could do she spoke onto his mailbox.
“Dom, listen to me. Please
come back home. Don't go do something stupid please. He ain't worth
it. Please Dom, you have to calm down and think about it.”
After
finishing the call Mia sank down on the living room sofa and started
crying.

The
same morning Sargent Tanner went into his office and sorted his mail.
There was one unmarked envelope on his desk. Opening it carefully a
single sheet of paper fell out.
I quit. You'll get
my resignation per mail.
Brian O' Connor
'Shit.
I don't believe it. What is the kid thinking?' Tanner immediately
picked up the phone and started barking orders to search for Brian.
“Officer O'Connor has to be found as soon as possible! Set that
as a top priority.” The next thing he had to do was to call
Bilkins, something he really dreaded.
“ Bilkins.”
“Sargent Tanner here. O'
Connor has just sent me his resignation and has vanished.”
“What do you mean vanished?
Get him back! There has to be a cause for this. Probably found out
his buddy Toretto is doing the hijackings.”
“ Yes, we are already
searching for him.”
“That was not supposed to
happen. He has probably warned Toretto that the FBI is after him.”
“ I know. We can't do anything
we have nothing against him.”
“And whose fault is that? I
hold you personally responsible if that case goes down, because your
undercover man screwed up.”
“I' ll get it fixed.”
