While Lara
headed up the stairs to her room to shower, she recalled that night in her
mind. It was rare that she thought about it. She certainly hadn’t forgotten it,
but it wasn’t something she normally contemplated. She found that whenever she
did, it gave her a strange feeling in the pit of her stomach. Not a bad
feeling, but a feeling that told her something was missing.
She noticed
the look Hillary had given her in the training room, when they were both on the
floor. His eyes rested on hers and she thought she might’ve seen a hint of
desire in there somewhere. It was probably her imagination. If Lara had learned
anything from the night they had spent together, it was that Hillary was all
too keen to forget about it and move on. She felt that she had instigated it and
therefore she was the only one who wouldn’t have protested to reliving the
experience. She was, of course, very wrong in that assumption. Even five years
later, Hillary still thought back to that night. He wished it had been under
different circumstances. He knew Lara was only coming on to him because she was
drunk. If it had been any other time, he could guarantee that their friendship
would still be fairly platonic.
On outward
appearance, that night hadn’t really changed the way they interacted with each
other. Of course, they did feel a little bit closer than they did before, but
that also made things very difficult. Lara knew that with the history they had,
she could no longer seek comfort from him. Not even ask for a friendly hug.
Cuddling and affection were completely off-limits for them, both secretly
frightened that they would end up doing much more. Hillary did not feel that he
couldn’t resist her. He had enough will-power to resist her all those years
before. He had just let his guard down that night, and with Lara being as eager
as she was, it was impossible for him to refuse.
He made a
mental note the next morning to never, ever let her take control over him
again.
Lara, clean
from her shower and still dripping with water, stuck her head out the door and
searched the empty hall for any signs of life. She held the white bath towel around
her with one hand, the other hand gripping the doorway. When she found nothing,
she stepped out into the hall and walked toward the stairs. Looking down over
the balcony, she spotted Hillary downstairs.
“Are you
busy?” She called. Her voice startled him and he looked up at her, confused.
“Well…” He
began, trying not to look at Lara, standing there in only a towel, her hair
still wet. She didn’t give him a chance to finish the sentence.
“Come
upstairs. I need you to help me find a dress.” And with that, she turned and
walked away, giving no explanation whatsoever. Hillary remained even more
confused than ever.
“A dress? Lara, are you feeling alright?” He asked as he
climbed the stairs to her room. Lara, shutting the door behind her, leaned
against it, her hands still clutching the towel as it struggled to cover her
heavy breasts.
“I’m
feeling just fine…” She said to herself, a sly grin upon her face.
Lara wasn’t
really sure what she was doing, and it hadn’t occurred to her that she was
actually going through with it until she stepped out onto the balcony and
called for Hillary to join her in her bedroom. Her heart was pounding, and she
was nervous. Would he cooperate? He was too smart to fall for any tricks, but
Lara had hoped that maybe she could convince him to play along.
She wasn’t
really sure why she was doing this. They had agreed shortly after ‘the night’
that they wouldn’t repeat the same mistake. But, Lara thought, they really
weren’t repeating anything. After all, this afternoon she knew very well that
she and Hillary were both completely sober and in control of their actions.
There was
something inside her that needed Hillary, especially after all that time
without him. She had been allowed one night with him, and she even had to
pretend afterwards that it had all been a mistake. She knew it was no mistake. Their consumption of alcohol that night didn’t cause them to sleep
together. It just gave them an opportunity to go through with something
she knew they had both been wanting for a very long time.
Upon
hearing the knock on her door, Lara tossed the towel onto the floor and faced
her closet. She couldn’t let him know for a second what she was up to. She
needed him to want her just as badly. If things didn’t go exactly right, it
could possibly ruin their friendship. Hillary would be angry with her for
trying to come on to him, and Lara feared the result of that.
“Come in,”
she called, looking through her closet full of clothes. Hillary stepped into
her room and his gaze immediately stopped on Lara’s naked form. He wasn’t too
surprised. She had a habit of undressing in front of him, and he had learned to
not let the sight faze him. But when she turned around, giving him the amazing
sight of her gorgeous breasts, Hillary felt a little strange. He usually didn’t
get the privilege of seeing that side of her. At that moment, he could only
recall one time where he had, and it reminded him of how wonderful that privilege
had been. Hillary stood in silent shock for a moment, and Lara was inwardly
pleased.
“You needed
my help with something?” He managed to speak again, trying his best to sound
calm and unaffected. Lara sauntered over to him, her hips swaying gently as she
walked.
“Yes, I thought
I might need you to help me pick out a dress,” she said casually. He looked her
in the eyes, trying not to let his gaze wander over any other part of her body
that happened to be a lot more interesting to look at. As if suddenly
remembering his role in their relationship, he looked past her and strode over
to her closet.
“Well, what’s
the occasion?” He asked calmly, flicking through her wardrobe. “I mean, are you
planning on going out, or..”
“I thought I
might just stay in.” She interrupted. He avoided looking back at her for fear
of not being able to look away again.
“If you’re
not going anywhere, why did you want a dress? You hate dresses, Lara.” He
frowned, pretending to be interested in the contents of her closet.
“But I know
you love it when I wear one.” Hillary heard Lara’s voice behind him and knew
she couldn’t have been more than a few inches away. He stopped what he was
doing and glanced over to one side. He hadn’t just heard her say what he
thought she said…Surely his mind was playing tricks on him. Against his better judgment,
Hillary slowly turned around. He found he was almost face to face with her. He
would’ve been completely face to face with her, except that there happened to
be a significant height difference between them, and he looked down at her, her
eyes gazing up at his intensely.
“What?” He
asked, not really thinking. He had heard what she said. He just didn’t understand
why she had said it. Lara leaned closer.
“Don’t
pretend for a second that you don’t want this.” She whispered. He still looked
frightened and confused.
“Don’t want
what?” He asked again. Lara felt a twinge of annoyance. He was playing dumb
with her, but she knew he was far from it. She tilted her head up to his,
preparing to kiss him. He moved at the last second.
“Lara, why
are you doing this?” He looked at her as if she had done something to mortally
wound him. This time Lara was the one looking confused. “This isn’t what you
want. That night all those years ago; that wasn’t what you wanted…”
“How dare
you tell me what I want!” Lara was angry. But instead
of feeling empowered, she felt stupid. He had made a fool of her, making her
look desperate as she tried to look calm and seductive. “You don’t have a
bloody clue, do you? You don’t know how hard it has been to pretend nothing
happened. You don’t know how it feels to look at someone every day and know
that you will never be able to tell them how you truly feel.” She picked up her
towel and wrapped it around herself as she sat down on the bed. Hillary looked
at her stoically, knowing that she was wrong. He did know how it felt to love
someone and not be able to show them. He wasn’t sure what to say to her. He
felt that she had every reason to be upset, but felt it was wrong of her to
direct it towards him. He felt the same anger, yet he could never take it out
on Lara. It wasn’t her fault he had fallen in love with her. It was the way
things had to be, and he knew it would be wrong to say otherwise.
“Go ahead,
walk out the door.” Lara’s voice interrupted his thoughts, and he looked back
at her silently. “I know you want to. Just go, before I make things any worse
between us.” She was angry, but despondent. Hillary wanted to say something,
but he was at a loss for words. Whatever he might’ve said would just worsen the
situation. So he turned and walked away.
