Jack
snapped his spyglass shut with thin-lipped smile. Three months on the open sea and nothing to
show for it but a dead crewman currently floating to the bottom of the sea, the
beginnings of scurvy in the men and a temper greatly shortened by the run of
bad luck they had been having. Many of
the men tried to claim that ‘that bit of muslin’ he had taken up with had
brought this on them and Jack was starting to wonder. Many nights he had laid in his bunk and imagined he could still smell her on
the rough cloth of the thin blanket covering him or that he could hear her
footsteps on deck, small and delicate compared to the others aboard. He always scolded and mocked himself when he
had those thoughts. _She’s gone now,
Jack. It never woulda
worked… She’s not cut out for this and a
pirate isn’t cut out for that. You made
your choice and you’d be miserable if you ever gave it up. _
“Cap’n!”
Jack sighed
and turned on his heels, smiling tightly at Gibbs. “Yes, Mister Gibbs?”
“You said…
you said we were comin’ up on The Sea Witch, Cap’n sir?” He turned his hat over in his hands, the very
picture of subservience.
“Yes,” Jack
gritted out between clenched teeth. “Stop
acting like a youth in terror of his captain.
It’s just Anna Maria.” Jack
stepped past him and, taking a deep breath and pulling his shoulders back,
shouted, “Make ready to board!” They
were coming up fast on the starboard side of the other ship, tacking hard. Jack leaned into the tilt without thinking
and turned to face Gibbs again. “Let me
guess, you’re afraid of Myrtle, too, eh?
Don’t get your unmentionables in a knot, Mister Gibbs. She’s safe in Port Royal. No ill luck to be had.”
Gibbs
narrowed his eyes and adjusted his stance to accommodate the tilting deck. “Her luck is all in this ship, Cap’n… We can’t go
on like this! We’ll die before we reach
port!”
Jack sighed
and closed his eyes for a moment, counting to three. “Gibbs, I am your captain. Whatever else you might think, remember that. Savvy?”
Gibbs nodded, obviously still nervous, but Jack left him to his own
demons and made his way to the bridge. The Sea Witch was a beautiful ship,
still highly polished despite months at sea.
He had…liberated it… from a small fleet of French ships bound for Port
Royal before the previous Christmas and left it stashed safely in
Forgotten Cove on the far side of the island.
Anna Maria had made some noises about how small it was but he could tell
she had been pleased. The schooner had
not been French in origin itself but he found it best not to ask questions when
acquiring goods. The Sea Witch, though, was not as fast as the Pearl and he
knew they would be close enough to board within the hour. Anna Maria had sent someone up to the crow’s
nest and they were signaling that they were not going to attack. “Good,” Jack murmured to himself, “makes it
that much easier on me…” He swung over
the railing and landed on the deck below, adjusting his heavy belt as he strode
towards the small knot of men fussing over some ropes. His sword thumping against his leg in a
rhythm that comforted him, he ordered, “Only one of you needs to be on
this. You two,” he signaled the two
younger men, twins by the looks of them, to move on. “Make ready the plank to board.” He ignored the idle chatter of the men and
walked the length of his ship, unable to stop the well of pride and admiration
flowing over in his chest. He loved the Pearl, more
than anything he had ever stolen, borrowed or seen. She was his life, she was his child, she was in his blood….
He sighed and rested his hands lightly on the railing, watching the Anna
Maria’s ship drop anchor from a distance.
Whenever he needed to shake Myrtle from his thoughts, he walked the
decks and reminded himself just how much he loved his life. _Can’t be a pirate with squalling brats
running around, can you lad? _ He smirked faintly at that mental image, ignoring the
tiniest of twinges in his heart. _Myrtle
will be onto something else next time you see her. Bodices and jewels, no
doubt. Or midwifery, knowing Will… _ He
laughed at that idea, Will and Elizabeth sprogged up,
Myrtle chasing toddlers as the happy couple chose names for Turner Baby Number
Four or Five… Gibbs’ heavy tread behind him broke his
reverie. “Yes, Mister Gibbs?”
“You need
to see this,” the other man said without preamble. He handed Jack his own time-worn spyglass and
nodded towards The Sea Witch. “Look at the bridge…”
Jack sighed
and did so, taking a moment to focus his eyes.
“What am I looking at? That’s
Anna Maria. How is this important,
Mister Gibbs?” he demanded lightly. “I’ve
seen her many times before.”
“Cap’n, beggin’ your pardon, that’s
not Anna Maria. Anna Maria is down there,” he pointed and Jack followed to see
the female captain reprimanding, from the looks of things, a young sailor
making the ship ready.
After a
long moment, Jack turned his gaze back to the bridge. “No,” he said
simply. “It’s impossible.”
“Aye,”
Gibbs sighed morosely, “it’s her. It’s
your damned witch.”
