Chap 2
-
As days passed, she learnt more of the Woad ways. She also learnt of her name.
Kaden, a pure Amazon from across the ocean.
The Woads were rebels against the Roman Empire. They fought for their freedom. And as she learnt more, she gained knowledge of Arthur and his Knights of the Roundtable. Equal rights for each mao sao sat at that table. It seemed that Merlin had something in for Arthur. But it wasn’t loathing or hate. It was a disagreement.
Guinevere had left for the better part of the year, leaving Kaden to entertain herself some how. She had learnt much for the majority of the time. Mostly sword-play, weapon use and the basic skills of a healer.
Then on one not so fascinating day, Merlin approached Kaden as she helped gather fire wood.
“Kaden, how is it that you manage to work so much and tire yourself out and still find time to help gather wood with the men?” He asked with a warm smile.
She chuckled, “Why do you ask questions that I do not know the answers to?” Merlin rested on his staff and contently watched her for a moment.
“You seem like you want to ask me something,” she said after placing the wood into the pile and stopping next to Merlin. “By all means, ask me what you wish. I owe you my life.”
Merlin smiled and spoke in his native tongue, “I have come to ask you to fight against the arrival of a Roman Bishop.”
Kaden stopped and let the offer sink in. She replied in his native tongue as well, “I will fight.” Merlin gazed at her as if studying her.
She had the blood of an Amazon, which naturally held the thirst for battle. She would learn much in the ambush he had planned on the morrow.

Leaning low behind a hill, I lowered my arrow so it would be lit by the passing torch. My eyes returned to the nearing Romans and the carriage. I had never really seen a Roman, and from what I could tell, they seemed high in status. Pulling the arrow, the other Woads following my lead. Looking back, I received a nod from Merlin. Letting go of the arrow, it imbedded itself into a Roman Soldier. He fell to the ground and the blood bath began. I let out a scream and we charged. Pulling the whip from my waist, I flung it forward at a Roman. It tightened around his neck and I knocked him off his horse. He tried to get up, but I plunged a knife into his chest. I ducked as an arrow flew past my head. I looked from where it had come from, and saw Arthur and his knights coming towards us.
I wrapped the whip around my waist again and un-sheathed two knives. I slashed past two Romans, and let their blood stain the grass. I ducked again as another arrow whizzed past my head. I looked u see see one of the knights glaring down at me from his horse. His dark eyes bore into my own as he lifted his sword. I dodged the first blow by skidding beneath the horse and to the other side. I lashed my whip out and brought the knight down to the ground. He almost landed on top of me, but I moved in time so he landed with a loud thump onto the damp ground. I rolled over and groaned. A stray arrow had cut me across the collarbone and ripped part of my strap.
The knight was up again andmademade a grab for his sword on the ground. I jumped up and tackled him. We tumbled down the hill and I landed on top of him.
He shook his head and realised my appearance, “You are not a Woad!” I tried to hit him, but he grabbed my wrist and pushed me to the ground and we rolled again.
He held my wrists to my sides and glared down at me, “Definately not a Woad.”
“Get off me.” I snarled.
He held one of my knives at my throat.
“Ask me again. I dare you.” He leaned down and hissed into my face.
I smirked.
“Get - off - me!” I slammed my knee into his crotch.
He gave a long and painful groan. I pushed him off and snatched my blade from his hand.
“Try to attack me again,” I lifted my whip from the ground and cracked it, “I dare you!”
“Step back from him.”
I turned to see another knight bearing down on me, an arrow point at my chest. I glared at him as I reluctantly moved aside. The fallen knight had now pulled himself up and still seemed to be in pain. The Knight on the horse scanned my appearance and seemed to realise I was not a Woad.
“Galahad, bring her to Arthur”, the Knight on the horse said to the knight by the name of Galahad.
P>GaP>Galahad looked infuriated, “Bring her to Arthur! I say we kill her, Gawain! She violated my - assets!”I turned to Galahad and yelled, “It was you who attacked me first!”

I watched as Arthur lowered his blade and let a male Woad run back into the forest. Galahad yanked my whip so I stumbled.
“Hurry up!” He barked.
He had used my own whip to bind my hands with one end and to pull me along with the other. The cage nge now had over a dozen arrows in it. Two men dragged out a dead body.
The Knight to Arthur’s right looked worriedly to Arthur then his eyes landed on me.
“Arthur Castus. Splitting image of your father.”
Arthur ignored my presence and looked to an elderly Roman on a horse, “I see your military skills are still useful.”
The man removed his helmet and smiled, “Ancient tricks for ancient dogs.” He smiled and looked to the otheightights.
“And these must be the great Sarmatian Knights we hear so much of in Rome.”
I began to put names to faces. I knew who Arthur was, Gawain, Galahad and I was sure that the knight to the right was Lancelot. I looked to a stocky looking man, Bors. It must be him. To the right of the carriage stood a tall man with a scar across the top of his bald head. He must have been Dagonet, for the one who still sat upon a horse was dark and silent, could have only been Tristan.
Finally, as the carriage began to roll again, they turned their attention to my form standing next to Galahad.
“Who is this?” Asked Arthur, his eyes studying my face.
“She was fighting with the Woads”, Gawain muttered and dismounted his horse.
“But she is not a Woad,” he continued, “Her features are too dark. She isn’t from this island.”
“Who are you?” Arthur questioned. I stared at him.
The silence was only short before Arthur spoke again. “Bring her with us. She may be of some use, Woad or not.”
Bors and Dagonet stood by either side of me. “How are we supposed to get her onto the horse without her attacking us?” Bors asked with a grunt.
“Will you attack us if we untie your bindings?” Dagonet asked politely.
I knew I was out numbered. Any trying to escape would get me killed. I shook my head, “No, I will not, but on one condition.”
“What?” Bors said.
“You let me keep my weapons to defend myself against anyone who tries to touch me without my consent. And I will not harm your men.”
They agreed and we shook on it. Dagonet seemed to have a kind heart and undid my whip from my wrists. His eyes wandered to the print on my wrist for a moment but no questioning came from him.
“Who am I to ride with?” I asked Dagonet as he mounted his horse.
Gawain looked to Galahad, “You should take her. After all, you two started off great.” Bors roared with laughter.
Lancelot walked over with a black horse, that had once belonged to one of the fallen soldiers.
“Here. We don’t want our youngest to be damaged more so.”
I stared at him for a moment before pulling myself into the saddle. He attached a rope to the rein and then to his horse.
