His thoughts turned to his newest young mate: One William Turner. It had been a long time since he had been able to call anyone his friend. Not since the late Bootstrap Bill Turner, the boys father, and that had been ten years prior. Over these long years he had had his fair share of mates sure enough, but that was all they were to him, professional friends; Like Gibbs and Ana Maria. They were important to him because they were part of his crew, and he felt that he could trust them, as long as what was going on wasn’t something that held great profit for them. But they weren’t his personal friends; friends that would stand by him through thick and thin no matter what it cost them. Not like Will had done. The boy might be rash and stupid but he had done all he could to insure that Jack and bloody Elizabeth hadn’t been hurt by Barbossa by stepping into the firing line himself. No other man he knew would have done that. Most would have just stuck to the code and left him for dead. But Will was different. Jack trusted him; hell he loved him.
Snapping out of his thoughts, Jack gazed out across the sea before chancing a glance at the various crewmembers that where on the deck. Spying Duncan’s eyes on his, Jack shot the man a glare, making the crewmember scuttle off in a hurry to get out of Jack’s line of fire. Giving off a wicked smile, Jack glanced at the working crew and snarled. Deciding that he had effectively confused the daylights out of his crew, Jack started to hum the pirate song that Elizabeth Swann had taught him only days before, and allowed his thoughts to turn back to the sleeping boy that he had left in his cabin hours before.

Gibbs watched his Captain from a distance. Jack’s moods changed like the wind: One moment he was calm; the next he looked raving mad. Glancing around the ship’s deck Gibbs looked for what could have lit the Captain’s fuse, but found nothing; the crew was all working hard. Glancing out to sea, he checked for ships but didn’t see any. Taking another look around, it occurred to him: Will Turner was not to be seen anywhere. Where could that boy have gotten to? Thinking about it, Gibbs realized that he hadn’t seen the boy since the night before. He knew Jack would have told the boy that he would be bunking with the crew, yet the boy hadn’t come down to the sleeping quarters the night before. Taking a deep breath Gibb’s went to search for him.
After two rounds of the ship including all the cabins, save for the Captains, Gibbs determined the boy missing. Was it possible that the boy had done something rash and had jumped ship in the middle of the night? Gibbs didn’t know what to think. It was possible, especially since he had looked all through the ship and the boy wasn’t to be found. He had even asked several of the crew members if they remembered seeing the boy, either during the night or in the morning, but every time he questioned, it always came up negative. Gibbs decided that he needed to tell Jack. Taking a deep breath, Gibbs prepared himself for the explosion that Jack was sure to throw at the news, and headed for the helm.
*****
After standing right next to Captain Jack for several minutes and not being acknowledged, Gibbs took a tentative step forward and gently tapped Jack’s shoulder in question. Much to his dislike, however, and before he could really even blink, he found himself with the edge of Jack’s cutlass to his throat. Holding his hands up in surrender, Gibbs looked Jack right in the eye. “Cap’n?”
Glaring down at Gibbs Jack released his hold on the older man, then giving no apology what so ever he barked, “What is it you be wanting Mate?”
Swallowing hard, Gibbs started to wonder if he should be about to have this conversation with Captain Jack, for he valued his head right where it was, and wasn’t looking forward to having it removed by a livid Jack. So not really sure how else to say what he had gone up to the helm to tell Jack, he blurted it out. ”The kids gone missing Capt’n.”
It took a moment for Gibbs’ words to sink in, but when they did Jack was livid to say the least.
“What do you mean, he’s missing, Mate? We are on a ship in the middle of the bloody OCEAN!!!! How far could he have gone?” Jack seethed.
Gibbs decided that if looks could kill, he would have been dead ten times over from the look that Captain Jack was sending his way.
“Search the ship!!!!” Jack bellowed
Swallowing nervously Gibbs answered, “I already did Captain. Twice in fact…I asked the whole crew as well, yet no one has seen him. I’m afraid that the kid is not to be found.”
Glaring knifes at Gibbs, Jack ordered him to take the wheel. Jack was pissed to say the least. How could young Mr. Turner be missing? He had just left the boy only a few hours before…how much trouble could he get into in such a short time? Then it struck him: Gibbs said that he had searched the whole ship. Fair enough, but Jack knew that the crewman wouldn’t have entered his cabin, for it just wasn’t done for a crew member to enter the Captain’s cabin uninvited. His anger melted away in sheets, looking towards Gibbs as if the man had horns. Jack started laughing. Laughing so hard in fact that he barely managed to stay on his own two feet, almost falling to the ground.
By now several crewmembers started to get worried, for they had all witnessed the scene between Jack and Gibbs. Only moments before, Jack looked as though he were about to keelhaul the whole crew on account of the missing blacksmith, yet now the Captain was hysterical with laughter. Was it possible that the man had finally cracked? Had too many years under the sun finally fried his brain?
Finally, Ana Maria stepped forward; glancing up at Gibbs. She noted the concern on his face, for it mirrored hers. “Jack??” she questioned. Earning no reply what so ever other than another gale of laughter, Ana Maria made a quick decision and with her right hand, reached out and smacked Jack hard across the face.
Jack reeled, the impact sending him flying. When Jack turned back to her, fire was once again in his eyes. “What the blazes did you do that for WENCH?!” Earning no answer whatsoever, Jack glanced around at the crew that had gathered around him. “Back to work ye scurvy dogs before I keelhaul the lot of ya!” Jack’s voice dripped venom. Glaring at Ana Maria, he spat, “You lucky I don’t introduce ya to the cat, wench! Don’t ye be doing that in t oft of me crew again, savvy?!”
With that, Jack was gone, storming towards his cabin, his light happy mood gone, leavine cre crew up on deck to wonder the whereabouts of the young blacksmith.
*********
Jack stormed into his cabin, bareanaganaging not to bang the door open with a thud. After all, the youngest member of his crew was still sleeping, and didn’t need to be woken with a loud bang. The boy would probably have a giant headache already as it were.
Grabbing a bottle of rum off the table where he had left it the night before, Jack took a long, calming gulp. Glancing over at the bed, just to make sure that young Turner was in fact there like he had suspected, Jack was relieved for the peaceful sleeping face of his young friend stared back at him. Taking another swig of rum, Jack swaggered over to the bed and sat down next to his young mate.
His anger instantly melted, and he smiled lovingly down at the boy. Reaching out a tentative hand, Jack smoothed Will’s hair back, and allowed his mind to wonder once again, trying to pinpoint the exact moment that he had fallen for the boy.
***********
It was late morning, almosddaydday when Will finally started to stir. Yawning, Will rolled groggily over and buried his head in Jack’s lap, much to the surprise and pleasure of the Captain. Mumbling something about the excessive rocking of the ship, Will burrowed his face into Jack’s breeches.
The first thing Will knew when he woke, was the splitting in his head, and the rolling of his stomach. Swallowing back the nausea that threatened to overcome him, Will rolled over in search of a more comfortable position: One that hopefully would hold still. Since when did the blacksmith’s shop rock? God he was so sick!
It wasn’t until his thought pillow moved, that Will realized that he wasn’t in his room at the back of the blacksmith’s shop. Add to that his pillow smelled like dirty unwashed pirate… Suddenly the past several weeks caught up with him, and his eyes opened with a pop. Will immediately winced before snapping his eyes back shut. The bright lights made his head throb terribly. Whimpering slightly, Will burrowed his face into what he thought was his pillow.
Will tried unsuccessfully to remember the prior night but was unable to do so. Groaning, Will tried to open his eyes again, but found that the light was just too much, and allowed them to slide shut again.
Jack watched Will with amusement. It was obvious that the boy had a horrible hangover; probably the first in his life. Reaching down, Jack once again smoothed Will’s hair off his forehead and patted his shoulder. “There, there, luv. It’ll pass in a little while. Then you’ll once again be right as rain.” Jack cooed down at him.
Will stiffened at the sound of Jack’s voice. He remembered, then, watching Jack sleep after the Captain drank himself silly. He must have passed out sometime after that because that was the last thing he could remember. Jack must have moved him sometime during the night. “Jaaack, my head…hurts,” Will moaned.
Bringing the neck of the rum bottle to Will’s lips, Jack whispered, “Lad, take a wee sip of this it will make you feel better I promise.”
The rancid smell of rum that close to his face was enough to make his stomach start turning again, and Jack barely had enough time to grab a basin off the near by table before Will lost the contents of his stomach. While Will vomited, Jack held the boy’s hair back off his face, and gently patted him on the back. When Will was finally done hurling up his insides, Jack gave him a glass of water, allowing the boy to rise his mouth out. Moaning again, Will collapsed back down into Jack’s lap, hiding his face on the pirate’s leg.
Jack continued to pat the boy’s shoulder, and even started murmuring comforting words of utter nonsense to the shaking boy that he held in his lap. Allowing his mind to wonder once again, Jack tried to figure out what it was about this boy that made HIM, a PIRATE Captain, act so gently and loving. Groaning to himself, Jack decided that he was going soft: Something that he couldn’t afford to do…he would just have to be meaner. But then, as he looked down at the pathetic being in his arms, Jack decided that he couldn’t be mean to this angel. Therefore, he would just have to be mean to all the other idiots that surrounded him.
Jack allowed Will to continue to use his leg as a pillow for several more hours. Jack even managed to drop off one or two times. But in the end, his leg was asleep and his back hurt from sitting up all afternoon. Reaching down, Jack carefully removed the slumbering Turner from his arms and lay the boy down on the bed with his head resting on an actual pillow. Standing, Jack headed for the door, plastering an angry scowl on his face he left the cabin.
SeveSeveral of the newer crewmembers stood up from where they had be lollygagging around all afternoon, and riedried off to find something to do. Scowling after them, Jack swaggered to the helm. Gibbs no longer stood behind the wheel. Eyeing Ana Maria with an evil look, Jack frowned at the lady pirate before turning on his heel and heading below deck to look for Gibbs.
He found Gibbs in the galley, mixing up a brew of hangover remedypyinpying Jack, the older man smiled, ignoring the scowl of his Captain’s face.
“Afternoon Captain, made this for the boy,” Gibbs announced as he held out a steaming cup of the concoction. Jack snatched it from Gibbs’ hand, and then continued to hunt through the cabinets for something that looked halfway edible. Grabbing some hardtack and another bottle of rum, Jack turned back to Gibbs and smiled. “Thanks mate,” he said, heading back to his cabin.
When Jack arrived back inside the cabin, Will was awake and attempting to sit up. Smiling at the lad, Jack deposited the rum and hardtack on the table, and with the tea still in hand, he headed over to the bed. Setting the tea down on the bedside table, Jack helped Will sit up a little bit more, laying him back on a pile of pillows. The boy still looked green around the gills, and he held his stomach with his left hand.
“Here luv drink down this tea…it’ll clear yer head.”
Reaching up a tentative hand, Will tried to grasp the cup, but found his hand too shaky. Seeing the boy’s distress, Jack helped Will grasp the cup and guided it to the boy’s lips. Will slowly drank down the tea, feeling the comforting heat settle in his stomach. Within moments, like magic, the ill feeling was mostly gone.
Seeing the obvious change in his young crewmember, Jack patted the boy on his shoulder. “Come on whelp, the Pearl wants to bid ye good day, and it’s about time me crew sees for themselves that you didn’t jump ship. ‘Sides, some wind and air in your face will do you good. Your looking a bit green around the gills still, Savvy?”
Will nodded, finding himself somewhat alarmed that Jack logic almost made sense. Standing up, Will paled, noticing for the first time that he was naked as the day he was born. Jumping back under the covers, he hid his now burning face. Jack turned back around at the sound of rustling bed sheets. Cocking his head to the side, Jack looked at the lump that was now buried back under the covers and narrowed his eyes. Reaching out a hand, Jack tapped the lump in question.
Under the covers Will sucked in a breath threw this teeth as he felt Jack tap him right on the rump.
“Will me lad, what are ya doing?” Jack questioned.
“Jack where are my cloths?” Came a small, embarrassed voice.
“AHHHHH, I don’t rightly know. Give me a second and I’ll will find them for ye lad. But don’t worry…It’s not like I haven’t already seen ye, savvy?”
Will felt the blood rush out of his face at Jack’s words and rush to another section of his body at Jack’s next words. “Ye were lying in me bed all day, savvy? I did get to enjoy the view from time to time. Ye be no eunuch lad. Ah, here they are...” Pulling the covers off of Will’s head, Jack leaned down and kissed him gently on the lips before tossing the boy’s breeches and shirt at him. Turning towards the door, Jack called over his shoulder, “Get dressed luv, I’ll meet you outside.” With that, Jack was gone and Will was once again alone.
A/N: Hope everyone enjoys that chapter…I will try my best to get another chapter posted before Christmas. But this is finals week so I might want to actually study…. hmmm what a thought. But with any luck I will have another one for you soon…. please review it makes all the more reason for me to type faster. Also…a review of the first chapter from FF.net told me to please not make Will out to be feminine. (aka helpless) Well I don’t intend too. This chapter will hopefully be the last of that…for a while. Don’t worry Will gets to prove how strong and manly he is later on in the story I promise.
I was pretty much basing Will hangover pain on that of the hangover I had after my recent 21st birthday…OMG that was the worst…never had one that bad so that is where his sickness came from….wish I had some tea to clear up the pain like Will got to have that would have been nice…Oh Well…Live and learn.
